Last year marked the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Palermo Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. Despite this, at least 20.9 million adults and children are bought and sold worldwide into commercial sexual servitude, forced labour and bonded labour. Of these, women and girls make up 98% of victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation. In this months episode Poppy speaks with two experts on human trafficking. First, Duncan Jepson from Liberty Asia, which works to prevent human trafficking through legal advocacy, technological interventions, and strategic collaborations with NGOs & corporations in Asia. Poppy also speaks with Andy Desmond, a former Scotland Yard detective who has worked at the forefront of technology which helps identify and rescue victims. Poppy asks: what are the causes for trafficking? Can consumers really make a difference? And how has technology helped in the fight against human trafficking? Music: www.bensound.com
