On February 28th 1997 one of the most famous "caught on tape" shootouts occurred. Two heavily armed AND armored bank robbers engaged police in a lengthy shootout outside of a Bank Of America location in North Hollywood. About 1,700 rounds were fired when it was all said and done and this incident paved the way for arming rank-and-file police officers with semi-automatic weapons, previously only issued to swat teams.
