Ryan Brownlee in an American college baseball coach, formally serving as head coach of the Western Illinois Leathernecks baseball program. He was named to that position prior to the 2013 season. Brownlee played four seasons under his father Jim at Evansville before a single season with the Independent Evansville Otters. He coached two seasons with the Purple Aces before moving to James Madison in 2000, where he remained for four seasons. Brownlee moved to Iowa in 2004, and added recruiting coordinator duties during his nine seasons with the Hawkeyes. During that time, 32 players he recruited or coached were drafted by Major League teams. In September 2012, he was named to his first head coaching position with the Western Illinois Leathernecks baseball program.

Coach Brownlee wanted to have this added to the show notes to clarify something he discussed on the podcast.

The drill with Justin Toole was “three style buffet” not three plate drill.  We did three plate drill at Iowa as well but “3 style buffet” is what he did with their minor leaguers and we did at Iowa.  It is where a hitter will use 3 different hitting styles in 6 pitches.  Usually no stride, toe tap then leg lift to free them up and find something that works.  Another thing we used a lot for hitters timing that I don’t see anybody doing is using the stopwatch to track load to contact times.  My cell is 3092557329 if you want to chat about the stopwatch.  We used it in drills and during BP for instant feedback.

Most MLB hitters are 1 second or higher on when their load starts to when their barrel gets into the hitting zone.  Most HS timing is around .5 because the pitchers stuff isn’t as good and most of them start late (my biggest theory why most guys can’t hit anymore because they have no feel on how to adjust their timing to get the barrel on the ball).  We would track it off the tee first then with other drills and then during games.  Most hitting struggles were from starting too late and not mechanics.
