Captivating, worth listening to. Just not recommended for evening runs in an RV park near the woods
What a wild ride! This is an enjoyable podcast that takes you all across the US and spans multiple decades of craziness.
This is a very interesting, well thought-out and researched podcast. I went into this not knowing a single thing about the Bear Brook murders and found it to be an incredibly complex story, spanning the width of the US. It's devastating that this happened & was left unsolved for so many decades, but the host and producers approached the subject in a sensitive way. A must-listen if you enjoy 'Serialised' True Crime podcasts.
Just amazing journalism!
Bear Brook is a well-produced podcast with a compelling story, photos online to accompany the storyline, narration that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and leaves you with a new understanding of criminal forensics. Highly recommend. UPDATE 7/23/23 This is one of the few podcasts where Season 2 lived up to Season 1. Powerful themes of narrative and truth, acknowledgment of numerous perspectives, and overall very well thought out.
This is a very well made and compelling investigation into an old case that was believed unsolvable. When the right people, people with stellar investigative skills became involved, guess what. Totally solvable. Just needed the right people, the right communication and enough resources. Absolutely fascinating to witness the wonderful and creative investigation of a few brilliant and doggedly persistent journalists and law men and women. Don't miss it if True Crime and Justice are your areas of interest.
Season 1 - Incredible journalism, hooked from the beginning. Season 2 - Shines light on confessions, pressures from law enforcement. I can understand both sides - why the police want to find the killer, why they use the tactics they use, as well as why after hours of a stressful situation Jason would just say what he needed to do make it stop.
Really enjoyed this series, despite the topic being really quite gruesome. Story was respectfully told without sensationalism, and it was compelling to listen to the next episode along in the case.
Great podcast that discusses a murder that turns into more murders that all end up involving the same guy who messes with people's minds while many questions take years for answers.
Really engaging, chilling and well researched show. I like that I get so much information about how the police and many others have tried to solve this cold case, including a lot of new stuff about how DNA is used (and maybe can be abused). If you like true crime, this is a must-listen.
A fascinating listen about a cold case. Not full of blood and guts but with some twists and nuance. Should have gotten more attention then it did when first released.
Excellent, highly recommend this fascinating true crime show.
I've listened to this podcast over 20 times. Truly a passion project and it comes through. I want to know more and at the same time, I learned so much listening. Absolutely the best
Both seasons explore an interesting aspect of exploring cols cases (e.g. ancestry, police corruption)
One of the best true crime podcasts that I have listened too. It is a fascinating story that not only delves into the complexities and unknowns of a murder case, but also dives into the techniques used to apprehend former / future criminals. Since this podcast is concrete in what happens as well, it does not fall into some of the problematic true crime aspects that other pods like Serial do. I believe this is a fantastic pod that any podcaster (true crime enthusiast or not) should listen to.
One of the most intense and beautifully written and narrated podcasts out there!!! Loved every bit of it. Couldn't recommend it more!!!!!
There are (too?) many true crime podcasts these days. Many simply dig up yet another grisly case and talk about it without really adding much. Bear Brook actually managed to do what most of these series wish they could - follow an unsolved investigation before, during and after the truth emerges. It's clear that Bear Brook initially doesn't have any high aspirations of being involved in significant developments. By and large it is a retelling of a morbidly-intriguing scenario, though to its credit it was released in the early days of the genre before it became clogged and uninspired. It is also very well produced, avoiding sensationalism in preference of empathatic and steady reporting. The correct people are interviewed in search of worthwhile insight and Jason Moon is a patient, informative host. While there are hundreds or thousands of shows with similar approaches and intentions, Bear Brook remains amongst the very best in its field. Listen to episode one and you'll find yourself binging the rest in no time at all.
not only is it a fascinating story from true crime perspective but also from criminal forensics perspective. it delves deeply into the case and explains really well the way they could discover the identity of the Bear Brook killer, and how genealogy DNA helped partially solve this (and actually inspired authorities to use the technique to identify the Golden State Killer). it also starts an interesting conversation on DNA samples and its future usage. i'm afraid to spoil anything else because you should experience it for yourself but it is absolutely worth it whether you like true crime and talks about criminals forensics or not 5/5 stars. thought-provoking story and brought up subjects, well-made in technicality.
True crime podcast. Lots of moving pieces connecting the dots between States, victims, and a killer.
