Negative body image comments are something that all of us have probably dealt with at one time or another.  It’s such a real struggle especially when the temptation is to just look at the outward appearance of people.  Even though I struggled with an ED myself, I STILL have problems not looking at people at drawing conclusions based on their appearance.  Yet I’m reminded over and over again that God goes far deeper.  He looks into our heart. Jesus went to the heart of the matter with the woman at the well.  He knew that she had sin issues, and He dealt with them gently yet with a heart full of compassion and truth for what she was really struggling with deep down.

I think we forget that in a world that has a lot of pictures of people.  It’s A-OK to compliment someone on their dress or their appearance, but I have to say that this episode, this interview, reminded me that there is sooo much more to a person that they way they appear on the outside.  This idea first popped into my head when Kat posted this post, ‘Finding Joy in the Setbacks.’  Just a week ago, Kat found a situation facing her that triggered all the negative ED emotions, because of a comment about her body.   And honestly, the comment, though one that was not ill intended, probably would have triggered those thoughts in my head too.

No matter where those negative body image comments come from, or those negative comments, one of the hardest things to figure out is to know how to react.

I was amazed and grateful to see the grace of Christ, the love of Jesus, and a gentleness with which Kat reacted to this situation.  Because these situations can be hard.

Yet God used the negative comment to turn it into several amazing blog posts that Kat shared and the way that she can compassionately resonate with those of us who face these situations day by day as we walk through recovery.

Kat is one of the strongest women in Jesus that I know.  She shines such hope and joy in recovery, and she is so real with the hard parts of recovery too. She walks in such freedom,  and she readily acknowledges that recovery isn’t perfect, that we all need the grace of God, that we need Jesus in every single step, and it was a real privilege to talk to her and then to share this with you.

The final verses that came to mind as I was wrapping up this episode and writing this post were these from Philippians 4: 7-8, ‘

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.’

These have been some of the most grounding verses for me especially when I’m struggling with negative bad body image thoughts.  If it’s not lovely or honest or true or pure or lovely or of good report it has to go out the window.  It’s ok to process through them, because I’m 100% human, but those thoughts can’t stay.  And I LOVE that Kat said the same thing.

Ok now let’s talk:

(Linking up with Amanda so we can think out loud about this together!)

How do you deal with negative body image comments or negative body image days?

How do you process through negative thoughts or feelings?

(All the pictures are from Kat’s Instagram!)
