Hey y'all. It's Princess again,

0:03

and I know that I cannot wait

0:05

to get back into all of our geeky goodness

0:07

with my beloved Tessa. next

0:09

week. While you wait however,

0:11

wangels into another episode of geeked,

0:14

unlocked, Copa Kai. Hi.

0:17

See you next week. XL. XL.

0:21

Welcome, everyone. I'm your host,

0:23

Alana Pierce, and this is Cobre

0:26

QI unlocked. when Netflix geek gives you

0:28

an exclusive look into the shows you love.

0:30

Today, we're talking season five

0:32

of KobraKai and Hey. Are you afraid of

0:34

spoilers? Well, fear does not exist in this studio

0:37

but spoils do. You've been warned.

0:39

We are just about to

0:41

talk with Daniel Son himself and

0:43

FBI agent,

0:44

Johnny Lawrence, But I think what's different

0:46

about this season than the other ones is he's empowered

0:48

by whiskey and white claw.

0:49

Psychoanalyzed Terry Silva.

0:51

Terry Silver starts picking him

0:53

apart and it's it's that psych warfare

0:56

part of it he gets inside his head.

0:58

Witness

0:58

the karate sensation nation taking

1:00

over the valley and beyond.

1:02

His motivations are all

1:04

coming from a place of like, hey, you could

1:06

be a supervillain too. It's a new era.

1:08

a cobra kai. Brainstorm a new

1:10

dojo name.

1:11

Okay. Who hit a fight though? Savage butts

1:13

or verbal insult. Talk about a fight.

1:15

Then another fight. Then another one. And

1:18

probably one way. Natural. Right. But who do you think

1:20

we would in a fight

1:20

between the three of you? Okay. I'm gonna be

1:22

honest. I'm

1:23

gonna have to go with Una. Rehash the

1:25

series is most badass phenali yet

1:28

in my humble opinion. So put on your

1:30

ghee and get in the

1:31

dojo. The show's about to begin.

1:39

When they're not training in

1:40

the dojo, they are fighting all over

1:43

the valley, crawling rages, and having

1:45

a good time. Welcome to the cast of COBRA

1:47

Cai. How are you guys doing? Good.

1:49

Thank you for grabbing it. Yeah. Almost how does everybody

1:52

feel about season five? Good.

1:54

It's scared. So we're a wind spin. It's scared.

1:56

It's so violent. But

1:58

it's great.

1:59

It's pretty epic. Yeah. So People

2:02

get you know, really the the crap

2:04

kicked out.

2:08

I

2:09

hope everyone's okay. had

2:11

that month of BT

2:12

and -- Yeah. -- emotional, you

2:14

know, damaged. All

2:17

for you. Carbonite does have a rich history

2:19

of attacks lights, rivalries, vendettas,

2:20

but perhaps none bigger than

2:23

the few between Miguel and Robbie. Let's

2:25

take look.

2:29

Dude, I like these speakers. Dude,

2:34

I don't know how that didn't just knock you out

2:38

It's too tough.

2:41

Alright. That's it. My total. I

2:46

had

2:46

the idea that Johnny

2:47

didn't, like, walk the stairs.

2:53

Oh. Yeah. Fuck it all.

2:57

Dude, didn't get me thrown in today.

3:01

Shit.

3:29

pure terror. I asked that they put the tarderectal

3:31

noise when I screamed right there, but they

3:34

all got against it. The eagle fang. I

3:37

always think, like, what are the people who live upstairs

3:40

thinking about it? God, just like, what

3:42

Not being I definitely like putting that on YouTube

3:44

for sure. Yeah. We're like, shut up. I

3:46

still like the idea

3:47

that Johnny didn't, like, think to stand in

3:49

front of the stairwell. Like, of all things.

3:52

Like, the one, like, PTSD thing, I

3:54

would be like, well, don't let them near stairs. Yeah.

3:56

Thank you. He still wanted to be

3:58

a dad. That's scary. He's

3:59

still got the air horn. like his thought.

4:02

Hey. Stop that. Yeah. Stop

4:04

it. No. No. No. No. No. No. You're

4:06

asking. Wait. What did I I

4:09

start. What do you feel like the relationship

4:11

between Miguel and Robbie actually goes from here?

4:13

They clearly had a lot of

4:15

tension and a lot of issues

4:19

between not only themselves, but between

4:21

their their role models and their their father figures.

4:24

And I think Robbie

4:26

coming down with with Johnny

4:28

down to Mexico was kind of

4:30

the first big stride that they took to

4:32

try to reconcile. And then

4:34

this think was was the last little nail

4:36

in the coffin. They needed to have this conversation between

4:39

the two of them because they really haven't had time to talk

4:41

alone. It's always been with with Sam

4:43

or with Torrier, with everyone else fighting. So

4:45

now that there's a little bit of silence, I think they can get

4:47

their feelings out. Finally walking through But it was yeah.

4:49

Miguel forgave him really easily. It was like,

4:51

alright. hey, it was just the worst

4:53

day of my life, and it was

4:55

the worst day of your life too. And I was like,

4:57

let's go escape rooms. When you say it like

4:59

that. Yeah. Right. Mary

5:00

Sam spent a lot of this season avoiding

5:03

relationships entirely. You think this is

5:05

good for her? How do you feel about it?

5:07

I mean, I think, you know,

5:09

I I like the idea that here's

5:12

my thing. I think that Sam's main relationship

5:14

for me over the course of now looking

5:16

back you know, five seasons is that she's

5:19

been in, like, a really long term kind of chaotic

5:21

relationship with karate. Mhmm. And the rest of

5:23

the relationships that have kind of come and gone throughout

5:25

her life have been either

5:27

really helpful or hurtful to that

5:29

and and that, like, kind of being like a

5:31

core part of her personality. So

5:34

I feel like, yeah, maybe romantic

5:36

relationships. She needs to to

5:38

still sort through, but I think the fact

5:40

that she took a step away

5:42

from that relationship was the one that, like, hit

5:44

me really, really hard. Not to say wasn't, like, sobbing

5:47

in between every take of, like, the scene between

5:49

Miguel and Sam. Like, that was that was really tough

5:51

to film, but it was it was more interesting

5:54

to think of it in, like, this wide scope of, like,

5:56

Samantha, like, really taking a step from from

5:58

all the relationships in her life. And I think that can

6:00

be very helpful and beneficial. And I

6:02

also like the idea that she

6:05

can soar through it and still come back to

6:07

her home bases.

6:08

You proud of her?

6:10

I am. I am. I think Sam's she's

6:12

learning. She's getting through it, and I think that,

6:14

you know, I really wish that I would have

6:16

had a character like Sam

6:19

at, you know, at that age. And I and that's kind

6:21

of what I try my best to play to is the

6:24

the perspectives and stories that I I think I could have

6:26

really learned from and I think the ability to

6:28

not necessarily, like, put yourself

6:31

as the only important thing, like, I think

6:33

Sam's still trying to keep this, like, wide scope of

6:35

helping everybody at once, but I think at the very

6:37

least, like, putting yourself first

6:40

in that way can be can be helpful

6:42

too is a trickle down effect to like all these other relationships.

6:44

And I think that's the way that she can come

6:46

back to things like karate. And being

6:49

around Robbie again, but in positive way,

6:51

possibly coming around to Tory in a

6:53

more constructive way and definitely being able

6:56

to come back to Miguel. very sweet answer. And also very

6:58

relatable. Of course, old teen girls struggle with

7:00

their relationship with karate. Yes.

7:03

Oh, yes. It's really hard

7:05

to let go. guys. Are you

7:07

first true love? I don't say. Yeah.

7:09

We've all been there. It's tough.

7:12

Jacob, for the past few

7:14

seasons, we've kinda seen you flip flop between

7:17

Hawk who we've come to be very

7:19

afraid of. And

7:20

Eli -- Why? So -- we want

7:22

to bully. It's so

7:25

you Aimia, you believe me would take one.

7:27

How does it feel to be back more in Camp EY?

7:30

It's more fun to play the villain.

7:32

I like you

7:33

know, trashing me onto and,

7:36

you know, getting the bully people is really

7:38

fun, you know. You get to do all the stuff that What

7:40

is it from? Yeah. For dude, bringing his arm was awesome.

7:43

No. It's cool. I actually really like it because I get

7:45

to film with a lot of people that I normally

7:48

wouldn't, you know, like the fourth season was kind of my

7:50

first time ever interacting with Ralph, really.

7:52

and seemed like having scenes with Mary, like,

7:55

before that, it was just Mary kicking me all the

7:57

time. Okay. Now So that me presents

7:59

you out. But

8:03

now I got scenes where we didn't have lines

8:05

toward each other just, like, looks. That's

8:07

true as, like, sometimes you guys are very separated

8:09

even though you're all in the same ensemble piece. Yeah.

8:11

I don't think I've ever really set a line to

8:13

Mary besides

8:14

yelling at her when she goes to visit Miguel.

8:18

I've had maybe, like, a couple lines with Payton.

8:21

Wow.

8:21

And I've only, I think, had, like,

8:24

I think what I see in the like, prepared to

8:26

face the fear of the hawk. I think that's, like, the only thing I've

8:28

ever said to him. Great line, though. Yeah. Great.

8:30

Very important. That's in his nightmares. Like, he wakes

8:32

up. He's like, oh, the fear of that. And

8:35

what was it, like, for little bit of work with people haven't

8:37

worked with before on the show? I

8:39

mean, it's always crazy. You know,

8:41

being in Miyagito for so long.

8:43

I only worked with Ralph Machu, and I love

8:45

Ralph, but I never really got to work with

8:48

Billy. What?

8:49

Yeah. I'd work with you all. because you

8:51

had a literally, there were three people in Europe.

8:53

Yeah. Everything else is okay. 123

8:55

No.

8:58

No. No. Not good enough. How can I work with you

9:00

outside of that? Are

9:00

you able to work with with Billy. Mhmm.

9:03

And finally, I got in season

9:04

five. I got a little solo scene

9:06

with just me and well, Dimitri

9:09

and Johnny. And I think it's really fun

9:11

to see their relationship together.

9:13

Hey. Thanks

9:15

for being a dork or a

9:17

geek or whatever you identify us.

9:19

Well, they make us say nerds

9:21

since Gekko's already taken and

9:24

say stop working, do we? Yep. Payton,

9:27

this season, Tory, I feel like

9:29

has gone through

9:30

a lot. It's been kind of rough to watch. You know, she's

9:32

losing a lot of stuff, kind of losing herself little bit

9:34

to her identity and losing a boyfriend all at the same

9:36

time. and you feel about how she ended

9:38

up tackling all those conflicts. I think

9:40

she was really doing the best that she could. I think

9:42

she handled it really well considering she's a

9:44

high schooler and she's taking care of her mother and

9:46

her brother and having the one

9:48

figure crease who was her mentor

9:51

and guide

9:51

in, you

9:52

know, locked up in a way. I think

9:54

she's handled it really well. sometimes

9:57

feel like she's the

9:57

the character who's going through the most and the most

9:59

quietly. Like, how how much of that do you

10:02

internalize when you're going through some of these scenes?

10:04

I think just like in life, you can't think

10:06

about it all at once. You know, you just have

10:08

to shove it away and keep going. And

10:11

I think that there's too much going on to

10:13

think about it you you have to handle it as

10:15

it comes, scene by scene. And

10:18

that's just kinda how I I handled it as

10:20

well. One step at a time. One step at a

10:22

time. but

10:23

you have to take all that anger and

10:25

you have to put it in your fist. Some other

10:27

fun games that happened this season. It was that egg game,

10:30

of course, which is very exciting

10:32

to watch everybody actually work together, which doesn't

10:34

happen very often. Mhmm. And speaking

10:36

of aired game. But Daniel and Johnny know that

10:38

Mjagifeng just wasn't cutting it. we're gonna

10:41

help them in a little game that we're calling

10:43

named that dojo. This is game you guys are gonna play

10:45

right now. Oh gosh. I really thought you're about

10:47

to bring out -- You know what? -- and I was like, I'm

10:49

We don't know about an elderly man.

10:51

Never mind. Great. Thanks. Wait.

10:54

Really? Oh. Yeah. No.

10:56

No. They're actual eggs. The

10:58

eggs have basically an assortment

11:00

of names, the adverbs, adjectives in them. And

11:02

you need to pick only two

11:04

words team them together and you're gonna

11:06

give me the coolest dojo name that you can possibly

11:08

come up with. Let's go look at it for. Wow. You're

11:12

great. He

11:14

just kinda opened up here, actually. because

11:16

I think we're gonna be followed by.

11:22

No. You're second. Right? Oh,

11:24

go ahead. The egg's open. Okay.

11:26

I have enough time to get.

11:29

Sweet. I think Hungary is good one.

11:31

Okay. I got two. But And we're hungry,

11:34

but

11:34

we're gonna be hungry. Yeah. I'm

11:36

hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry.

11:38

But You know, but I I like

11:40

theiteration actually horns. A lot of

11:42

blame. Or what about really

11:49

Only two. Only two words. China. Oh.

11:53

Yeah. Okay. Savage. You have to use

11:55

Okay. -- really to throw in a word. I wanna

11:57

Santina to save it for. You save it, but

11:59

no.

11:59

Really? No.

12:01

No. It's not a cool. Earth won't even snow.

12:04

Animals are so And that Our

12:06

animals are so when you first

12:08

one you said it was the best. Stay a

12:10

little bit. Running out of time. got that right now. Yeah.

12:12

We're done. We're done. Yeah. Lynn.

12:14

I just wanna go. What is yours? You guys go first?

12:16

No. We Lynn, guys go first. Yes. I'm

12:19

ready. Okay. So

12:20

two of my favorite words were

12:22

two words -- Okay. -- in the pool. So

12:24

we have

12:26

we are the savage butts.

12:29

That is It's

12:34

hard to beat that. Take

12:35

that. We can't. You cannot beat it.

12:38

Okay.

12:38

It says Oh my god.

12:40

Alright.

12:42

We

12:45

are the purple insult block

12:49

That's the story word. This is It's a

12:51

word. It's a word. It's a word. It's a word. It's a word. It's a word. It's a word. It's a word. It's

12:54

a word. There's a word. word name.

12:56

What? We can't be the verbal insult.

12:58

Actually, I think it's actually fun.

13:00

The verbal insult is the verbal insult. Really

13:04

from Clairemont calculated. Well,

13:07

all of

13:07

you guys don't think you can We'll give you fair price.

13:09

This is a lot harder than I expected. I didn't I

13:11

didn't expect to be -- Savage was. -- there's been

13:13

some Savage Savage butts. You're like

13:15

a savage butts. Yeah. Okay. Who had a

13:18

fight though? Savage butts are verbal insult?

13:20

I think being beat by savage butts is like

13:22

I don't know. Wait for her. I said, like, it's

13:24

getting yelled at. There's, like, a lot

13:25

of I've yelled at a few bucks in my day.

13:27

We're

13:28

instilling it with anxiety and depression. If you're

13:30

busy crying, you won't know where we're But it's a savage

13:32

but I feel like I have to give it

13:34

to verbal insult just based on the

13:36

warfare attack dicks. Oh, I'll

13:39

show you.

13:46

It sounds fun.

13:48

The season is absolutely awesome. Thank you

13:50

all for joining me. Yeah. Yeah.

13:54

Please welcome Griffin Santo

13:56

Pietro as newest member of Neon Hydro

13:58

Anthony Laruso. UNO'Brien,

13:59

debate captain turned ruthless

14:02

karate competitor. and Dallas Dupree

14:04

Young as the

14:05

future of Cobre Cai. Kenny

14:07

Payne? Who do you think we'd win in a fight between

14:09

the three of you? Okay. I'm gonna be honest.

14:12

I'm gonna

14:12

have to go with Una. She is

14:14

a fierce competitor. I

14:17

would say that if it were like a fight to break out

14:19

right here -- Mhmm. -- you know, I think one is

14:21

probably gonna win. Yeah. But then if maybe if it's,

14:23

like, a most dangerous game

14:25

type of, like, chase situation, I

14:28

don't

14:28

know. I think I'm gonna, like, home alone you

14:30

guys. Oh, you think so. Okay. Okay. Alright.

14:32

You said little traps in your ass. I

14:34

love it. No. I mean, Dallas, I don't know.

14:37

I think it'd be tough.

14:38

It'd be close. It'd be close. Oh, yeah. What do you want?

14:40

What do you want? That's

14:43

close? You went to the wrong side. That is funny.

14:45

Is that right? Yeah. No. I love it.

14:47

No. These guys are so good. They're all in they both

14:49

been practicing. So Yeah. Dallas

14:51

Kenny starts out a very sweet, costly,

14:53

loving, doctor scribble bottoms, but has quickly

14:55

turned into a karate

14:56

monster. Can you talk about what it was

14:58

like to play that transition for him?

15:01

Being able to play two sides of the character

15:03

was very special to me and it was it was unique

15:05

and challenging all at the same

15:07

time, but I appreciate the creative John Josh

15:09

and Hayden for allowing me to explore the

15:11

different avenues of Kenny and just

15:13

allow myself to get into the mindset, both

15:15

the kid who struggled with bullying, which is a huge

15:17

issue in today's society and also

15:20

the the kid who beats his bully

15:22

in the end. So it it was really cool playing those

15:24

those two characters. Which one of you more like? Which

15:26

one of my most? I'm

15:29

gonna have to go with the kid who loves doctor

15:31

scribble bottom and playing video games all the

15:33

time. I'm gonna have to go with that kid. Do you guys agree with

15:35

that? He's not a monster. not smart.

15:37

Right? No cell. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like,

15:40

fifty percent

15:40

of the time will take it. Yeah. For

15:42

sure. For sure. Hundred percent. Your character

15:45

has been mysterious. but has shown some

15:47

amazing

15:47

intellectual and physical

15:49

ability. What scene do you think best

15:51

put that to the test for you?

15:52

Oh, you know,

15:53

I think

15:54

right out the gate, that debate scene. You

15:56

see that Devin definitely

15:59

does not suffer fools. And I

16:01

remember a lot of the takes they asked

16:03

me, you know, don't rip the book this time,

16:05

but I just couldn't help it because she

16:07

just has that physically aggressive

16:10

energy. Definitely. She's super intimidating. I

16:13

also agree that she could kick my butt off the three of

16:15

the dogs. Yes. I'm happy to show.

16:17

Griffin, Anthony used to be video game obsessed,

16:19

but Karate adjacent member

16:21

of the LaRuso family. Do you think Anthony

16:24

ever had an interest in karate just waiting

16:26

to be recognized by his dad? I

16:27

think that, especially in the earlier seasons,

16:30

Anthony was able to see that this karate

16:32

world has kind of been destroying his family's

16:34

life, and I'm sure a part of him did

16:36

not wanna get involved in that. But thanks to,

16:38

you know, this guy, he kinda got forced into that

16:40

world. See in season four that, you know, once

16:42

he starts to get involved in this karate world, he starts

16:44

to build more relationship with his dad. And I think

16:47

that the two were kind of more intertwined

16:49

than he thought that, you know,

16:51

maybe he has to just,

16:53

you know, jump jump into this crazy

16:55

world and then he can start to build this relationship

16:57

with his family. It almost seems like he was, like, the

16:59

last sane person Yeah.

17:01

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Now that's out the window. For

17:03

all three of you, how did it feel kind of

17:06

showing up in the spotlight in very bombastic

17:08

ways? alongside this already very well

17:10

established cost. It was really cool with

17:12

the fact that everybody has been together for five years.

17:14

They understand what it's like to be. a new cast

17:16

member on a TV show, so they understood where we

17:19

were coming from at all times. But it was always

17:21

nerve racking, especially that first day on

17:23

set. It's nothing like it. But something that

17:25

I would definitely never forget. Yeah.

17:26

How about you? Oh, I think think they're all just

17:29

so welcoming and supportive and

17:31

and patient of us. So they really

17:33

gave us that extra

17:35

time we needed on said and they're always

17:37

there to give us advice and any tips

17:39

whether it's acting or karate.

17:40

Yeah. I mean, you know,

17:42

when I was there the first season, I was, like,

17:44

kinda felt like that new -- Mhmm. -- really

17:47

nervous. And I thought I wasn't gonna feel that, you

17:49

know, the season four season five, but I still end

17:51

up feeling it because I

17:53

think I kinda I was no longer just the

17:55

kid on set, you know. I had other people

17:58

my age and it was really I think that was

18:00

really exciting, you know, just as much as it was

18:02

nerve wracking. I was just really happy to really

18:04

feel like part of the cast more. How do you feel

18:06

about the Noti themes at the show if you guys

18:08

play video games? Like, is that something that really

18:10

drew you to it?

18:11

Yeah. I mean, I love that Anthony and, you

18:13

know, kinda used to be part of that, like, Noti

18:16

True. You know, I mean, we have our Dungeon

18:18

and Master game, which is just

18:20

DND, which is kind of fun. Yeah. I

18:22

thought it was really fun to kind of be a nerd and you

18:24

know,

18:24

maybe we kind of played the reverse where

18:26

you

18:26

were nerdy season four, and now I get more nerdy

18:29

in season five. But, yeah, I think that was a lot of

18:31

fun. think we're all pretty nerdy in real life too. It's

18:33

really awesome. Outside of the show, what are you all

18:35

like, geeking out about right now? What are you what are

18:37

you watching playing? What are you into Okay.

18:39

So for me, Everybody's

18:40

gonna be like, oh, that's so boring, but I

18:43

love video games, sports,

18:45

sports fanatics. So, basically, it will

18:47

be the show twenty two, NBA two k twenty three

18:49

that's about to come out. add in twenty three. Nice.

18:51

I seek out about those games, honestly. And

18:53

then TV shows. I just love

18:56

stranger things. And Yeah. Oh, girl.

18:58

You know, cobra Kai is pretty good too. Yeah.

19:00

It's a great show. bye. Yeah. Yeah.

19:02

A little bit biased, but that's not all good.

19:06

And how about you? What are you into? Well,

19:08

I'm a swimmer, so you can find me in the water a lot.

19:10

Yeah. But I have TV wise, Oh,

19:13

I love Never Have I ever. That's definitely

19:15

a favorite and Shits Creek.

19:16

It's great too. It's such a good show.

19:19

Griffin, how about you? I'm a big fan. I just watched

19:21

the Sandman. on Netflix, catching up

19:23

on YouTube, and I'm actually reading the book now.

19:25

People gonna get mad, but I watch it, and then I read

19:27

the book. But, you know, we're so proud. It's such

19:30

an Anthony move. Yeah. Yeah. Like, after

19:32

I play some video games too. I'm not into the sports games

19:34

and more into, like, the campaign. No season.

19:36

Longer. Yeah. No. It's favorite game. Spider

19:38

Man on PS four. Yes. like the best

19:40

of your game ever. Alright. I I wanted to to loss

19:43

loss you guys like how you feel about being, you know, part

19:45

of the Carburi Legacy. It's obviously a really huge

19:47

show at Super popular. People love it. I love it.

19:49

like, what what does that mean to you? Oh,

19:51

I mean, it's just being

19:53

able to make these, like, lifelong

19:55

friends now Yeah. -- getting to

19:58

know a lot of, like, the older cast too.

19:59

They've become mentors for

20:02

us

20:02

really. Yeah. No. Like, honestly, being a

20:04

part of this cast is unbelievable. and it's

20:06

definitely been a whirlwind since the since

20:08

day one, honestly. And then you it's

20:10

cool to have that balance of the young generation

20:12

and new gen and order generation that has

20:14

been here for a while. So that's where

20:16

we get our audience. It's like everybody loves CocoCay

20:19

and the Karate Kid franchises. And then, like,

20:21

wanted to touch on, we we have the

20:23

older mentors there for us at all

20:25

times and they're always supporting us. So they're

20:27

definitely blessing and just to be on the show

20:29

is is incredible. I think to see the fan reception

20:32

to not only our characters, but just the show and general.

20:34

I mean, it's really something that connects all of

20:36

these different generations of people. It's

20:38

very beloved. Yes. It's gotta feel awesome.

20:40

Yeah. doesn't matter. Well,

20:41

I have so

20:42

much faith in you, Carprecay, next generation.

20:45

Thank you for joining me today. Thank you so much.

20:47

Have a great day.

20:51

What I'm offering you is

20:54

legacy. What's up Netflix geek?

20:56

I'm John Herwitz. I'm Josh Heel,

20:58

and I'm Hayden Schlosberg, we're the showowners

21:01

of Cobre Q, the way Karate offers

21:03

work. You know, they start kind of small,

21:05

and then they just take you on an emotional roller

21:07

coaster. And I think in season five, we just,

21:09

like, kind of, hit that that peak

21:11

where, like, all of a sudden, you know, things

21:14

things start to go crazy and go to

21:16

places that you just could never imagine

21:18

when watching the first season. Going into season

21:21

five, we knew we were going to have Daniel

21:23

Aruso fight, Terry Silver. That was

21:25

a big one, that was looming. And I remember

21:27

us being on set, and there being, like, a few

21:29

takes in a row and we're feeling like,

21:31

okay,

21:31

that that's pretty good. That's pretty good. We're like,

21:34

are we gonna keep putting Ralph through having

21:36

to do this, you know, physical task? and he was

21:38

just like, he's like, here, one more. This is

21:40

the one. This is the one. And

21:41

we were we watched and he

21:43

called his shot he called a shot and

21:46

and he delivered rule

21:48

number three.

21:50

man can't see

21:52

can't fight.

21:57

The exception of Miguel falling off the balcony

21:59

in season two and Chris almost

22:02

getting killed on Bridge of Snakes in

22:04

season three. We haven't really

22:07

seen any of our characters in

22:09

True Apparel for their lives. Johnny

22:11

is about to get killed by Terry

22:14

Silver's henchmen the fist who has

22:16

gotten to that point of the Karate opera

22:18

and he, you know, he needs

22:20

to dig deep. He sees that photo and

22:22

it just revs him up and he

22:25

just unleashes everything he has.

22:29

Since we started making Cooper Kai,

22:32

it's always fun to find places for the legacy

22:34

characters. but it's always crucial to us

22:36

that they show up at the right time. Mike

22:39

Barnes, we've been people've been asking us

22:41

every sea When's Mike Barnes coming back?

22:43

When's Mike Barnes coming back? And we knew

22:46

that once Terry Silver entered the picture,

22:48

Mike Barnes would would follow fairly

22:50

soon after. You know, the key with

22:52

Mike Barnes was, you know, having him show

22:54

up in a way that's unexpected, giving you

22:56

what you love about about Mike Barnes, but

22:59

also giving you some, you know, some new

23:01

looks at this character that we knew

23:03

in one way as just Karate's bad boy

23:05

in the past. Now we get to see him as fully

23:07

three-dimensional character. So to be

23:09

able to have him come back, him have a

23:11

battle with chosen in a little

23:14

bit more of a comedic way

23:16

and then, you know, have his life destroyed by

23:19

by Terry Silver. Mike

23:21

Barnes. Well,

23:25

it's been a long time. Oh,

23:27

I'd say you're keeping well, but all

23:30

evidence of the contrary. That's what happens when

23:32

someone burns your life to the ground.

23:37

Terry Silver is definitely my favorite character in

23:39

all of fiction, And I think the

23:41

reason is because he comes

23:43

off as this super villain bad

23:45

guy. But on the other hand, he's so sophisticated and

23:48

smart and you know, an aspirational

23:50

figure as a man. He believes

23:53

he's doing good, kind of like what we showed

23:55

showed with since a crease in the past that

23:57

he has a reason why he believes what he does with

23:59

COBRA QI for Terry. Terry was

24:01

a a weak young man who was

24:03

be scared at war and

24:06

these teachings made him strong. His

24:08

motivations are all coming from a place

24:10

of like, hey, you could be a supervillain too.

24:12

Like, and and giving kids that kind

24:15

of power. it's never too late

24:17

to get the last laugh. Right? We

24:19

always try to, you know, stay grounded,

24:22

and it just so happens that by

24:24

season five, things have gotten to this place.

24:26

You know, we never would have done some of this stuff

24:28

in the first season. and part of the

24:30

fun of getting to this point in our story

24:32

where you're on episodes forty through fifty

24:35

is the audience has been on this

24:37

ride and stakes go higher and higher and

24:39

higher. and now we've reached this point

24:41

where we can, you know, bring in the fist,

24:43

take things to an international level.

24:46

We feel like we've earned this kind

24:48

of heightened stage in the story.

24:50

So for the fans who've been there, it's like, okay,

24:53

it's not crazy that this is all happening

24:55

because you've seen you

24:57

know, everything that's happened up

24:59

until this point. And so we're having fun

25:01

being in that stage of the show where

25:03

anything can happen and things, you know, can

25:05

can reach that level of life and death. Alright,

25:08

Geeks. Thanks for having us in your homes.

25:10

We hope you enjoyed season five of CocoCay.

25:13

See you in the valley.

25:17

Please

25:17

welcome William Zebka and Ralph Montchew.

25:19

How are you guys doing? Doing great. Good. How are you doing?

25:22

Very glad to have you here. I'm so excited for

25:24

everyone to see season five. What were your highlights of

25:26

the season? This is highlight. Oh, this is I

25:28

appreciate that. He made it. The fact that we finished

25:30

that show, that it's out and we're

25:32

sitting with you is a highlight. That's magical.

25:34

Yes. So you deal with some pretty

25:36

serious billings in this show, but there is a very

25:38

big difference between a bad

25:40

guy like John Kreese and a

25:43

villain like

25:43

Terry Silva. But both deserve no

25:45

mercy

25:46

and they both deserve an elbow. agree

25:49

with that?

25:49

Not all. Not all.

25:50

Okay. theagey dough and the and

25:53

the fang of it. He's coming around. You know, I'm coming

25:55

around. He's got some some He's right. He

25:57

has some mercy, and that's a good thing.

25:59

So he might not

25:59

fully snuff out the candle

26:02

yet. So

26:02

Oh, I think you could have

26:04

mercy and still snuff out

26:06

the candle. Wow. Really? But I think it's -- Yeah. --

26:08

show me how to do that. Well, that's It's just like

26:10

we should make a show about actually right because I'm sitting

26:13

next to a Bonsai tree, which is very

26:15

Miyagi though, and I'm actually feeling

26:17

that

26:17

he may be on to something. Right. Did it make you feel

26:20

more at peace? Yes. I've been working on this for

26:22

a long time. Like your dad Personal

26:24

I bring it with me everywhere.

26:26

He gave it to me at season one. I cracked it on the ground,

26:29

and I put it in this Very

26:30

good idea to get an elastic one. That

26:33

was good call. Ralph, for the first time kind

26:35

of ever, Daniel is absolutely not in control

26:37

of everything that's going on with his family

26:40

and also you know, an actual real threat of

26:42

physical danger. Can you talk about how that would

26:44

be for him? I embrace that going

26:46

into this this season. Being able to

26:48

rough him up a little bit and unhinged

26:51

in all areas of his life losing a

26:53

grip on Lenti because he has he

26:56

is the only one who knows who Terry Silver

26:59

is. So often when

27:01

you're the only one who knows the truth

27:03

to everyone else around you,

27:05

you look like the gray you'll come off as a green

27:07

gas lit. Terry Silver starts

27:09

picking him apart, and it's it's that

27:12

psych warfare part of it. He gets inside

27:14

his head. He has no one to to call

27:16

on, and and so he has to do

27:18

it himself. And once he

27:20

starts to lose pieces of

27:23

the foundation of the groundiness of what his

27:25

life is, being his wife,

27:28

And once that blow up happens at the end of episode

27:30

four, a really strong scene with

27:32

Courtney Hangler, who's just wonderful.

27:34

And I mean, begging for that scene for

27:36

a couple of season, I

27:37

think, Let's have a knock down

27:39

drag out, you know, marital

27:41

argument never fit into the story

27:43

and now it did. So I was really excited

27:45

to have these places to go. in

27:47

in truth, it brings other

27:49

colors and layers to Daniel Aruso

27:51

where in previous seasons at times,

27:54

He

27:55

he was in the valley

27:57

and in this

27:58

this the Cobre High

27:59

story.

27:59

At times, he you

28:02

didn't get to see all that. He had

28:04

to be

28:05

what he was to propel the story

28:07

and less three-dimensional at sometimes.

28:09

And so was really excited with season

28:12

five to dive into that, to have to

28:14

not have that mentor there, or that

28:16

partner in his wife, or the business

28:18

unit, or his kids they are looking

28:21

up to him -- Yeah. -- and and have to deal

28:23

with that alone. I love that, LaRousseau.

28:25

I love Yeah. It was I love him broken at his

28:27

bottom and raw and beat up. You know, because

28:29

he I think it's great thing. I think it is great.

28:31

I love it. And I I I'm

28:33

in. I love it because because the

28:36

the you know, you go back to the Karate

28:39

Kid Daniel Russo's the protagonist of that

28:41

film, that story. The the

28:43

the the kid mix store, overcoming obstacles,

28:46

fatherless, teen trying to

28:48

navigate fish out of water, all

28:50

of those things. And so all of those themes

28:52

are kind of in this

28:54

season for LaRosa. So it's very

28:56

karate, kitty, even though completely Kobra

28:58

Kai. That that stuff all that arc into

29:01

that to when you come in at the end

29:03

of that episode, you know. Yeah. When

29:05

you're standing there up and chosen I

29:07

I love it. I was very moved when I first

29:09

saw I mean, it was like I had a little lump in

29:11

my throat seeing Johnny Lawrence and I'm gonna be

29:13

here for my friend. Yeah. I mean, come on.

29:16

It's real. Yeah. The ultimate rivals and

29:18

They have each other So most of my Lerusso, man.

29:20

Yeah. He's sweet. He is good stuff, man.

29:23

Yeah. He is good stuff. But we do actually

29:25

have a a clip of -- Oh, you know. -- getting

29:27

his butt Okay. Let's talk about that. That's

29:29

it. Hold on. I mean, the real, Johnny

29:31

Lawrence. I've seen these a hundred times. Again,

29:35

then you could chew. And now that

29:37

the writings on the wall, you wanna surrender.

29:40

No. No. No. We are way past

29:42

the time for white flags to any boy.

29:47

That was soundly.

29:53

Those wall heads, those

29:56

knuckles, it's blood. So

29:58

I may believe

30:00

it's this. This guy wants to break,

30:02

humiliate you, stop you

30:04

into the ground. And what are you gonna do?

30:16

It's

30:16

our game of Thrones for

30:18

sure. that wasn't an outbreak, I

30:20

guess. Yes. It was not an outbreak.

30:31

Oh my gosh.

30:32

Tough day of the office. What I what I so that

30:34

was not an elbow snap.

30:36

when he got you that way, he didn't just snap your elbows.

30:38

His shoulder is Oh, okay. No. I

30:40

was saying, you know, the post production guy said, let's put

30:42

a crime. You know, you're a yeah. I heard they have

30:44

fun. You know, they have fun. You

30:47

know, it sounded like you're all. I was like, oh, no, man.

30:49

You

30:49

know. For some of that and some of that could

30:51

have been the ah and slow.

30:52

Yes. You know, they dragged. They

30:55

little sound design there. Yeah. That's How

30:57

did you not beat how did you not beat him? I know.

30:59

I mean, he's clearly there's so many openings.

31:02

The guy's legs are so long. It's like,

31:03

He's six And he's six

31:05

five. But he he

31:07

felt six six. Yeah. That's all.

31:09

His legs are just so long, and he can't really move

31:11

him out there. He's amazing. Like, mild.

31:13

Yeah. But does

31:14

it like to film that thing? That was we

31:16

do stuff in pieces,

31:17

but I wanted to do pretty long stretches

31:20

of it. by design of the fight. We

31:22

took our time finding all of that all

31:25

of those beats in there. It's always gotta

31:27

play to what's going on narratively

31:29

story wise, character So for that scene,

31:31

that's Lou Russo unhinged. This

31:33

guy, you know, he talks about his his

31:35

wife, Amanda, and how easy he was to

31:37

manipulate her and

31:40

and can't wait to get the COBRA GIs

31:42

on his kids. He's just, you know, he

31:44

he silver has Daniel in the palm of

31:46

his hand right there. So it is that that's that

31:49

psychological advantage. because

31:51

the real pain is

31:53

about to begin.

31:54

What was it like working with Eugene?

31:56

He's great. He was just and

31:58

is just the

31:59

the sweetest guy so well prepared,

32:02

so he cares so much

32:05

about being authentic and and the

32:07

responsibility of of carrying out his

32:09

character. Hong.

32:11

I'm sure you've been

32:13

asked this a million times. So what is it like reuniting

32:15

with all of these people after so long? It's like

32:17

the ultimate, you know, high school reunion every

32:19

season. It's amazing. Yeah. don't think I've seen

32:21

any other show, like, managed to do that as well. Yeah.

32:23

It's was it season two when the COBRA guys came

32:26

back? I think Yes. Yes. So the OG

32:28

COBRA when the original cover guys came back,

32:30

those were my guys when we did the movie. I felt

32:33

I missed them in season one. Like, I really

32:35

missed them in season one. I felt like, wait. Where's

32:37

Johnny's the head of the snake, but where's the rest?

32:39

And when they came back, it was like, we went and did

32:41

Big Bear in the show. went to Big Bear, and we actually

32:43

had done that in real life. We've been up in big

32:46

bear we've camped out. And so it was like, you

32:48

know, life imitating art, art imitating life.

32:50

It looks like things aren't looking great for

32:52

Johnny at the end of season at at Terry's

32:55

Place. How do you think that previous

32:57

seasons Johnny would have handled

32:59

that fight? Where would they have gotten their inspiration from?

33:01

I think what's different about the season and the other

33:03

ones is he's empowered by whiskey and white claw.

33:06

And

33:07

I don't think he would have probably walked

33:09

into that. into

33:11

that dungeon without a little bit

33:13

of liquid courage. But he also has a

33:15

purpose. I mean, the truth is Johnny has

33:18

a purpose now. He's fighting for something.

33:20

bigger than himself, and that's a new

33:22

life, a baby being born. The stakes

33:24

are high, and it's personal. And so

33:26

that's where he digs down deep when he sees the the

33:28

photograph and finds that

33:30

extra surge, just shot of adrenaline that kicks

33:32

in. And I mean, those half dead able

33:35

to somehow manage to throw all these black

33:37

belts around the room. So that should mean

33:39

to take There's one black and white. Yeah. There's just one

33:41

black and white photo. Yes. It's okay. Kids

33:43

get keep that old side around it.

33:45

And can. We're

33:49

in. Daniel and Johnny had a sort of

33:51

role reversal this season as Daniel's

33:53

family life is falling apart. Johnny was

33:55

really stepping up to be a better father and role model.

33:57

Let's take a look at some of what happened there.

34:04

You literally just said he wasn't here. Yeah.

34:07

I lied again. Not my fault you felt for it twice.

34:09

True. You guys are right. Shicking you

34:11

into lunch wasn't my best effort. So

34:13

I did some Interneting, found

34:16

a bunch of strategies for building trust and teamwork

34:18

cooperative exercises. At least anyone

34:21

is called an escape room. How it

34:23

works? I know what an escape room is, and I'm not

34:25

doing it. Yeah. That goes double for me. I

34:29

reverse the door knobs. It's locked from the inside.

34:32

And this is the only key.

34:40

William, two questions. fast. How did

34:42

Johnny come up with that? And second, how did he

34:44

do that so fast?

34:45

Well, it might

34:47

have appeared fast. I mean, what was that three or four

34:49

cases of Coors banquet? So that's a

34:51

morning breakfast for him. That was easy. just

34:53

cut those suckers up. You know, he reversed

34:56

engineered the doorknob. You know, he was a handyman.

34:58

He could do that. Glued the window shut. not

35:00

a problem. He gobbled a conflict

35:02

resolution. Oh, great. Okay. Can

35:04

you talk a little bit about obviously

35:06

a very significant transformation

35:08

from female body investigator

35:12

to baby proofing teenage

35:14

conflict resolution experts. Yeah. Well, there's two

35:17

opposite I mean, that's a to z right there. I think

35:19

Johnny just liked the shirt, you know, it's at FBI,

35:21

and it it could have said, you know, anything

35:23

on the back, but really, at that point,

35:25

he's, you know, he's he doesn't

35:28

know he's about to have a baby and that he's gotta

35:30

pull himself together. and

35:32

he'd never had a dad. He had

35:34

Chris, and he made a lot of mistakes

35:36

with Robbie, and he doesn't wanna

35:38

make that again. And the fear of that catapults

35:41

him into this moment where he needs to

35:43

baby proof his apartment and search the inner

35:45

web and try to make

35:48

so you can't stick your finger in the light socket to not

35:50

get a shock. And he's trying to know, he

35:52

he has no reference though. I mean, that's what's great

35:54

about him is he has a very small box

35:56

to pull from. That's true. That's right.

35:59

Repeat off to

35:59

me. Are you ready? Oh, no. Mhmm.

36:02

Johnny and Daniel, We've

36:06

been through therapy on this. Go ahead. Do we get Oh, the

36:08

Ross and Rachel. Oh, wait. You have

36:10

to repeat after you this? Yes. You're failing

36:12

miserably. So even you could she's doing it

36:14

three words at a time. Making it super simple. Okay.

36:17

Johnny and Daniel. Johnny and

36:19

Daniel. Of the Ross and Rachel,

36:21

The Ross and Rachel. Of Karate.

36:23

Of Karate. Thoughts? Who's

36:26

Ross and who's Rachel? He doesn't

36:28

watch network television. Their relationship,

36:31

even they said that at the beginning. You don't get

36:33

sick. talk about this well. Like, as soon

36:35

as me Well, it's

36:35

it's, you know, it's they we love them

36:37

together and we love

36:38

them when they're at each other's throats. Sure.

36:40

You know, and and now in season

36:43

five, you look at the the entertainment factor

36:45

and and the enjoyment of watching

36:48

Johnny and Daniel work together and

36:50

Chris you've been wishing. The audience is

36:52

way ahead of them. They're like, you

36:54

guys should be friends. season one,

36:56

we were hearing that. My favorite thing about the

36:58

show is that you have to just believe that everybody

37:01

in this entire universe all they care about

37:03

is Karate -- Right. -- hundred everybody

37:05

everything is solved. Yeah. I probably people

37:07

ask me that question.

37:08

I said, I love it. I probably take up another

37:10

sport and move. get

37:12

out of the valley. Mark, there's close to that. No football,

37:14

baseball. There's no sports in the valley. There's

37:16

just karate everywhere. Take

37:19

a side. Yep.

37:21

awesome. You guys have known each other for a really long

37:23

time. What's your dynamic like off

37:24

screen? It's really difficult. It's so hard.

37:26

Feeling a lot of tension. It's still on earth. People.

37:28

It's not that easy. Yeah.

37:31

Thankfully, we're good buddies and friends and

37:33

we have a lot in common. And we we became, I

37:35

think, reconnected at Pat Rita's funeral.

37:38

Yeah. Many years of him going his way

37:40

and that was our kind of center point. Then we

37:42

did I did a music video. I remember did think

37:44

I'd sweep the leg and called Ralph Ups, and he

37:46

did that. And we kind of both together

37:48

dipped into the Copa kai Karate kid universe

37:50

at that moment. And then how I met your mother

37:52

came along, and we had this fun time on that, and our

37:55

world just kept and like this. Yeah. It just said, no

37:57

matter how hard I try It's besides how

37:59

how do you try to get

37:59

away from me? I'm like That's

38:01

my number. Hello? Geez. Breaking up, Ali.

38:03

Breaking up. all the elevators I ran up to it.

38:05

Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait.

38:08

Wait. Wait. Wait.

38:10

Wait. Wait.

38:13

No. Listen. It's

38:15

amazing how

38:18

that that journey. You know, we did

38:20

this movie together. And then would see, you

38:23

know, decades if not, you

38:25

know, close to decades where we hadn't seen

38:27

each other, you know, lives get in the way and

38:30

And and then when Pat passed,

38:32

you know, it was a it

38:34

was meaningful to see Billy

38:36

there. It was interesting for me carrying the

38:38

karate kid, hey, you're the karate kid. You're the karate kid.

38:40

You know, all my life has been part

38:42

of that. And to see the perspective of

38:45

his vision of what it's like to be connected

38:47

to that one entity, and and

38:49

the chemistry that that just we've

38:52

life and wisdom has gone on, and

38:54

here we are again. And it was Now

38:56

everybody calls you the corona. really cool, Freddie Man.

38:58

Yeah. And don't you play the corrada Man? That's true.

39:01

Freddie Man. Yeah. Okay. But what was cool would, I

39:03

think, read in that scene when we first saw each other

39:05

because before that moment, even in rehearsals,

39:07

I don't think we really personified the characters

39:09

as much. Right. Like, when when you came in, it was game

39:11

on and I'm I mean, we were in a complete character

39:13

completely out of ourselves. And there

39:15

was something the chemistry just happened. And we just

39:18

everybody felt that we felt that we were like, wow, this

39:20

chemistry is is still alive, and it's

39:22

even it's even maybe more about

39:24

Yeah. Yeah. Did you expect

39:25

people to love the show as much as they do

39:27

when

39:28

you were Stock

39:28

Mountain? No.

39:30

I mean I feel like it blew up fast.

39:33

No. I I mean, I don't know. I I kinda

39:35

didn't. I mean, I was kept saying, oh,

39:37

how's it looking? They're like, oh, people are gonna freak out.

39:39

We need to play. It's very vulnerable to do it. We're

39:41

so in side. So close to It's so

39:43

too hard to be a detective of these guys.

39:45

Yeah. It's like your whole lives. Yeah. And we were

39:47

like, you know, when we got pitched and everything, we're like,

39:49

if this misses this is gonna miss

39:52

bad. Like, if this doesn't work, it would have

39:54

been very difficult. not a good thing. Yeah.

39:56

So but thankfully, we have the amazing creators and

39:58

a great team. Under the time. It just, you

40:00

know The timing was right. Is this so it's such

40:02

a big part -- Yeah. -- of anything, even with

40:04

the original film. I mean, it's just the

40:06

riser. summer for the the right casting,

40:09

the right everything just came

40:11

together. Yeah.

40:12

And it's -- Yeah.

40:14

-- again, it's really quite unique.

40:16

Definitely. Yeah. And congratulations. Thanks.

40:18

I loved it. I loved season five. Love the whole

40:20

show. It's been wonderful talking to you both today. you

40:23

so much. for coming on the show. Oh. Great, Chris Brown.

40:25

Thank you. Ash brown. For me.

40:27

Yes. You're welcome.
