Jai Raman, MD, professor of surgery, talks about a heart transplant in a 63 year old man. The patient, Glenn Bovard, had a heart attack on Christmas Day 2009, that nearly killed him. He survived on a VAD, or ventricular assist device, for over a year. When his insurance company was forced to lift the lifetime cap for benefits, as part of the Affordable Care Act, Glenn Bovard got a heart transplant.
