I started listening to Berlin Briefing almost immediately after moving to Berlin in January 2020 but it has been during the lockdown that I really understood how important this podcast is.
For those of us new to Germany or in that awkward stage of being not quiet fluent enough to read or understand the German news (what level is that anyway, C1? C2?), this weekday podcast is a lifesaver. Before even having my coffee in the morning I download and listen to this podcast. I have also referred a number of expat friends and they have also mirrored this sense of relief and appreciation for having this quality English language news option while we linguistically acclimate.
A side note: Abby, the Host, has the most perfectly inflected, non-wavering voice I've ever heard. Is it too much to say that I thought her voice was AI at first? (sorry Abby, this is actually a compliment! What I wouldn't do for the consistency in your voice!) She mentioned having a cold in one episode pre-covid, so I am pretty sure that means she is not a computer.
My silliness aside, if you are thinking of moving to Berlin or here already and need a break from trying to understand the local news in Deutsch (or want to consume both!), try this podcast. It is time very well spent.
