1:03
Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to
1:05
the O'Reilly Update. Coming up next,
1:08
the news with Mike Slater. Thank
1:10
you, Bill. It is Friday, August 25th, 2023. Here's
1:14
what's happening today
1:15
in America. Donald Trump surrenders
1:18
in Georgia. House Republicans investigate
1:21
the Atlanta district attorney. Young
1:23
Americans prefer pets to children.
1:26
And a record number of Americans plan on traveling
1:29
this Labor Day. That's all coming up. And
1:31
then I will be here with your message of the day. But
1:33
first, Donald Trump taken into custody
1:36
in Atlanta last night. The
1:38
former president charged along with 18 co-defendants
1:41
for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020
1:44
election results. If I may sidebar
1:46
here, of
1:49
all the groups of indictments, I think this
1:51
one's the most ridiculous. But
1:53
also the one that's most likely to actually
1:55
have him end up in jail because
1:58
it's the easiest to to. Find
2:00
someone guilty of Rico charges
2:03
and there's no pardon. The president
2:05
and the governor can't pardon.
2:07
There's like a five person panel in Georgia
2:09
that issues the pardons.
2:11
The DA there filing paperwork to start the trial
2:13
no later than it's October.
2:15
In total, Trump has been charged with 91 federal and
2:18
state charges in four separate cases. And
2:20
if convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence
2:23
of 717 years.
2:25
Also the death penalty. They're not talking about that,
2:28
but one of the charges in DC,
2:31
conspiracy against rights. If someone dies
2:33
in the commission of that crime, then they're eligible for
2:35
the death penalty.
2:36
The house judiciary committee is probing Fulton
2:39
County district attorney Fannie Willis regarding
2:41
her motivations for prosecuting Donald Trump.
2:43
Jim Jordan said in the letter, quote, it is noteworthy
2:46
that just four days before the indictment, you
2:48
launched a new campaign fundraising website
2:51
that highlighted your investigation into president
2:53
Trump.
2:54
Additionally, the four women on the special
2:56
grand jury bragged about her excitement at
2:58
the prospect of getting to swear him
3:01
in that woman. She was a
3:03
sudden specialist. She was so giddy about it. I
3:05
thought that would be so cool. A
3:07
survey from consumer affairs finds 50% of young
3:10
folks would rather have pets than their own children.
3:13
Two thirds refuse to take part in daily activities
3:15
without their pets. Millennials
3:18
spend more on the family pet than
3:20
any other generation.
3:22
On average, young owners burn $250 a month on
3:24
pets,
3:25
on cats and dogs.
3:28
That's $3,000 a year on toys and treats. Labor
3:32
day travel up 44% compared to last year.
3:36
Survey from AAA finds a record number
3:38
of Americans will hit the road for the holiday weekend.
3:41
On average, the typical family spends eight hours
3:43
in the car. The top road trips for 2023 Key
3:46
West, Florida, the Grand
3:48
Canyon,
3:49
Orchard Beach, Maine, Montauk,
3:52
Long Island, and the number one destination is
3:54
September Yosemite National
3:56
Park.
3:57
Message of the day,
3:58
next. My
4:00
brother-in-law died suddenly, and now
4:02
my sister and her kids have to sell their
4:04
home. That's why I told my husband
4:07
we could not put off getting life insurance
4:09
any longer. An agent offered
4:11
us a 10-year, $500,000 policy for nearly $50 a month. Then
4:16
we called SelectQuote. SelectQuote found
4:19

4:25
you need a $500,000 policy

4:49
I'm Mike Slater filling in for Bill O'Reilly. And
4:51
now it's time for the O'Reilly Update message of the day. In
4:53
the Library of Congress, there are the
4:56
last two known copies of a book.
4:59
One of them is in such bad shape you're not even allowed to touch it.
5:01
The other one you can hold
5:03
in your hands.
5:04
It's called Come Out Fighting,
5:06
the epic tale of the 761st Tank Battalion, 1942-1945. It
5:12
tells the story of the first black tank
5:15
battalion to fight in World War II.
5:18
Stories that I find
5:20
so mind-blowingly inspirational
5:23
are stories of black regiments
5:25
in World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen,
5:28
the Japanese 442nd in World War II. I'm
5:31
sure there's others that I'm not aware of,
5:33
but the idea that, let's just focus
5:35
on the Japanese 442nd. Their
5:38
families are interned in America.
5:42
And instead of being bitter and resentful, they
5:44
join the military and
5:47
attack and defeat Japan. That's
5:50
unbelievable. And for
5:53
the black regiments, I
5:55
once talked to the first black city council
5:57
member in San Diego. He served in World War II. came
6:00
home, got off the train, could not
6:02
eat at the restaurants,
6:04
and could not stay at the hotels downtown
6:07
while wearing his uniform. And
6:09
you know what he did? He whined
6:11
and complained and wowed his me for
6:13
the rest of his life. No, he worked hard
6:15
and one day became a city councilman.
6:18
The idea that these men
6:19
in the 761st Tank Battalion
6:22
lived in a segregated country and still fought
6:25
for that country that was actively discriminating
6:27
against them, it's unbelievable. And
6:30
then there's people today who complain about
6:32
racism and how well I can even. Give me a break.
6:35
The story goes that in 1944, General
6:38
Patton was leading a charge towards Germany,
6:41
but he was running out of tanks. So
6:43
he sent for the 761st.
6:45
So he met with these men. He said,
6:47
everyone has their eyes on you
6:49
and is expecting great things from you.
6:52
Most of all, your race is looking
6:54
forward to you. Don't let them down.
6:57
And damn you, don't let me down. These
7:00
men saw 180 days straight on the front lines. One
7:06
German officer was captured by these men and
7:09
he said such bravery I've never
7:11
before seen. Why do
7:13
we need to know this story? This
7:15
is why I love history so much. You can look to
7:17
these great men who did great things
7:20
and it makes you want to be better.
7:24
One of the men in this tank battalion. They were
7:26
real people. He said
7:28
later in his life, they said,
7:30
we weren't qualified to do this and
7:33
we set out to prove different than
7:36
we did. We proved it.
7:39
That's what we lost in America.
7:42
That is what we've lost. We've lost the,
7:44
I'm going to prove you wrong perseverance.
7:49
Instead it's, Oh, you say I can't
7:51
do it. Okay. Instead
7:54
we fall over, we
7:56
keel over and do everything we can
7:58
to prove other people right about. us instead
8:01
of standing up and doing everything we can to
8:03
prove people wrong.
8:07
We used to be the people who could do great things.
8:10
And when people said there's no way that
8:13
made us work even harder, maybe there's nothing
8:15
sweeter in life than
8:17
proving people wrong. How
8:20
can we get away from this? I can't even attitude
8:23
and get back to the, oh yeah, attitude
8:26
again. Everything was said at the debate
8:29
along these lines. And I want to talk about
8:31
that next. We better figure this out. Otherwise China's
8:33
going to say we can't defend ourselves and
8:36
we'll say,
8:37
you're right. We'll
8:38
talk about the debate moment and what we can
8:40
do about this next.
8:44
Welcome to the Sean Spicer
8:46
show. There is a huge election
8:49
coming up
8:51
and man, is it going to be wild.
8:54
There's so much at stake. We can hold
8:56
the house, take back the Senate and recapture
8:59
the white house. President Biden's approval
9:01
rating dropping like a rock. Here's what
9:03
you need to know. The left has total
9:06
control of corporate media, government
9:08
bureaucracy, big tech, and oh
9:10
boy, do they know how to wield power.
9:12
They impeach me. They indict me. There's
9:15
more to do. So let's finish
9:17
the job.
9:17
I know how the system works
9:20
and how to use it. I've spent decades
9:22
in public service and the media. I'm
9:25
going to give you a front row seat free
9:27
of charge and take you inside
9:29
the race for the nomination like no one
9:31
else can.
9:32
Don't want to miss an episode. You can get it on YouTube,
9:34
rumble any of the audio platforms like
9:37
iTunes or Spotify. Plus you
9:39
can catch me every night at six o'clock on the
9:41
first TV.
9:44
Mike Slater Filner for Bill O'Reilly. Now it's time for
9:46
something you might not know. Many of our founding
9:48
fathers by the end of their life had
9:51
great despair
9:53
about the future of the country
9:56
they created.
9:57
They truly believe that this was an experiment. They're
10:00
like, well, we'll see.
10:03
And where they were hopeful at first, cautiously
10:05
optimistic, many were in downright
10:08
despair near the end of their life. John
10:11
Adams says, there's so much venality
10:14
and corruption, so much adverse in ambition,
10:17
such a rage for profit
10:19
and commerce among all ranks
10:22
and degrees of men,
10:23
that I sometimes doubt whether there is
10:25
public virtue enough to support
10:28
a republic. There's
10:30
a really interesting moment in the debate where
10:32
Mike Pence and Vivek were going at it.
10:35
And Pence said, it's morning in America. We
10:37
just need a government as good as her people.
10:40
And Vivek said, it's not morning in America.
10:43
We live in a dark moment. Where
10:46
do you stand on that? There seems
10:48
to be two schools of thought. We'll
10:51
call option A the Pence option, that
10:53
the American people are good and patriotic
10:56
and God fearing and frustrated
10:58
because our government doesn't match the goodness
11:01
of the wonderful American people.
11:03
Things are great and looking up. And
11:06
then there's option B,
11:07
the Vivek option, that
11:09
there are too many people in America who are bad
11:11
and hate this country and hate God. And
11:14
our government is a perfect reflection of
11:17
who we are, unfortunately.
11:20
And it's not morning in America. It's
11:23
the middle of the night. And nothing
11:25
good happens at 2 AM.
11:27
And it's going to get worse
11:28
before it gets better.
11:31
Are you more in
11:32
the Pence or the Vivek camp?
11:37
When I do get discouraged, this
11:39
is the truth that I always go back to. Sometimes
11:43
things have to hit rock bottom before
11:46
they can get better. John
11:48
Quincy Adams in 1814, he said, human
11:51
nature cannot bear prosperity.
11:54
It inevitably intoxicates
11:57
individuals and nations. Advert.
12:00
Adversity is the great reformer.
12:02
Affliction is the purifying furnace.
12:05
Prosperity has thrown our dear America into an
12:07
easy trance for 30 years, this is 1814.
12:10
The dear delights of riches and luxury have drowned
12:12
all her intellectual and physical
12:15
energies.
12:16
So maybe we need that rock bottom before the
12:18
best of us can rise back to
12:21
the surface and make America great
12:24
again. O'Reilly
