***Hello, my name is Sabina! I'm a Black artist and a transplant to Humboldt County as of 2011. By day I run a local radio station but by every other free moment I have, I like to create.I work mostly in digital art but I am also working on illustrations. These two areas differ greatly in style, method and meaning but I learned a while ago that exploring different types of expression is good for an artist, regardless of what my 5th grade art teacher had to say.My illustrations come from a place of wanting more Black representation in art. I loved comics and magazines when I was younger and as a child you notice when you don't see folks like you. There weren't more than two black characters in a comic panel at a time if any throughout an entire storyline. It was frustrating and disheartening. I'm currently trying to strengthen my hand at drawing and materializing the characters I desperately wanted to see as a child. Every day brings a new lesson and that's the most exciting part.My fully digital art deals more with objects and comes from a place of self-preservation. I always created and drew worlds and landscapes as a method of escaping and coping with childhood trauma. My digital art takes on the form of new planets, floating giants in the sky or creatures for me to discover in the colours and noise.I used to be nervous about sharing a lot of my work because I've attached it to my vulnerability and growth, the things that are sensitive to share with others. However, in creating a seperate space for it in the digital world, I've received a lot of support from Humboldt and beyond.It's funny to call it a brand as I've yet to launch a store (*cough* online store coming soon shameless plug *cough*) but my "brand" aka my world is called Pizza Moon Prints. Inspired by a brief moment in my childhood where the idea of the moon being made of cheese was whack if it didn't have toppings. I need my toppings, I need my variety. I need to see something different each day.If, like me, you have a mind that just won't sit still, art can be a lifesaver. Art has been my lifesaver and whatever your medium may be, be it paint, music, words, glass etc. create a world that brings you joy, comfort and even a little discomfort. It's worth it.
