What's up And welcome into the Monday edition of The
0:02
Black and Blue Report podcast, presented by a
0:04
Seakeeek. I'm Daniel Salerson. Hope everyone
0:06
had a fantastic weekend wherever you
0:08
may be, and hope this Monday finds
0:10
you well. This weekend plenty to do here in the
0:12
Crescent City. Between the Draft
0:14
Boil, the NFL Draft in general, you
0:17
had Jazz Fest kicking off and then the Zurich
0:19
Classic on the West Bank. Wherever
0:21
you were, whatever you were doing, Hope
0:23
you had a great weekend. And this is our last
0:26
week of shows for the Black and Blue Report.
0:28
We'll take a little bit of a break, a hiatus
0:30
as they say, and then come back to you for
0:33
training camp, Saints training camp in
0:35
late July, and we'll bring you again throughout the
0:37
NFL Draft the next season. So we're going to
0:39
kind of recap everything today and
0:41
throughout the whole week with some Saints, with some
0:44
Pelicans, and you never know what else.
0:46
And today we will focus in on
0:48
the NFL Draft and we'll focus in on
0:50
one of the guys that was selected for the New
0:52
Orleans Saints, and that is Eric McCoy, second round
0:55
pick forty eighth overall from Texas. A
0:57
and M will most likely play center
0:59
for the New Orleans can't play guard and
1:01
play a little bit of tackle. Learn more about that
1:03
with what he can't play. With His high
1:05
school coach, Todd Quick joins us from Lumpkin
1:08
High School in East Texas. He kind
1:10
of talks about and shed some light on Eric McCoy,
1:12
the kind of person was off the field, with the kind of person
1:14
he was on the field, and
1:16
plenty more as they are super excited
1:19
there in East Texas that Eric is pretty
1:21
much close to home, just six hours
1:23
away from Lumpkin if you're gonna
1:25
drive to the Mercedes Been super A Dome. So I'm
1:27
sure some friends in family will be definitely
1:30
making that track all the way to New Orleans
1:32
there. But I know the Saints traded up for him,
1:34
originally selecting sixty fourth in the second
1:37
round, but traded up with the Miami Dolphins again him
1:39
at forty eight. To recap the rest of the players
1:42
for the New Orleans Saints. In the fourth round, they
1:44
selected the safety out of Florida, Chauncey
1:46
Gardner Johnson. They also went with
1:48
the safety and round number six as they traded
1:50
for sa Quon Hampton out of Ruckers
1:53
and aliz A mac the tight end out of Notre
1:55
Dame, was a seventh round pick for the
1:57
New Orleans Saints and the other seventh round pick outside
2:00
linebacker Kaden Ellis
2:03
out of Idaho. So Saints
2:05
were pretty busy despite not having a
2:07
first round pick on Thursday night, and of
2:10
course even without the first round pick.
2:12
If you look at the ratings between ESPN,
2:14
ABC and NFL Network who all aired the
2:16
NFL Draft, of course New Orleans
2:19
second ranked city as
2:21
far as ratings are concerned. Of course Nashvilles number
2:24
one, they were the host site, but New Orleans
2:26
and number two again. Of course, everyone loves their
2:28
football here in New Orleans, and the show it again in
2:31
the ratings. As I know, everyone's excited
2:33
for some of the newcomers, including
2:36
Eric McCoy. If you didn't get
2:38
a chance to kind of watch a lot of the NFL
2:40
Draft and it was a busy weekend, there is a draft
2:42
recap show today from noon to
2:44
one with Sean Kelly and John the Chaser.
2:47
If you miss it again if noon from one of this because
2:50
post it after one o'clock, you can watch
2:52
on New Orleans Saints dot Com, the Mobile, Lap,
2:54
Facebook, Twitter, and you
2:56
can also watch it on the Saints YouTube
2:58
channel as well, so plenty of ways to watch. And those
3:00
two will kind of put a bow on the
3:03
NFL Draft. As I mentioned, it's our last
3:05
week of shows. Sean Kelly will
3:07
have the Wednesday show for you and I'll have plenty more for you,
3:10
plenty more for you after our
3:12
interview. But enough for me. Let's get
3:14
started on today's show again, we focus in
3:16
on Eric McCoy. We'll chat with his high
3:18
school coach, Todd Quicknext, this
3:20
is the Black and Blue Report. This
3:25
is the Black and Blue Reports, Blue
3:27
Sammie, Buy Sea Geeg. Here's
3:30
Daniel's salary. Say so,
3:34
we laid out all the draft picks for the New Orleans
3:36
Saints in our first segment, of course, headlined
3:38
by Eric McCoy, offensive lineman from
3:41
Texas, A and M. He was selected forty eighth overall
3:43
by the New Orleans Saints. And we have a special
3:46
guest relating to Eric McCoy today.
3:48
That is Todd Quick, head football coach at Lufkin
3:50
High School who coached Eric during his days
3:52
there in the East Texas and coach
3:55
I appreciate you coming on. How are you today? Yes?
3:57
Sorry, doing real good? Good good. First
4:00
off, I know you were watching the NFL Draft.
4:02
I'm sure what was your reaction when
4:04
Eric got drafted on Friday. Well,
4:07
every time, every time somebody got up there,
4:09
you know, everybody was standing up ready, ready
4:12
to see who was going to pick and what they were gonna
4:14
pick. So pretty excited about it.
4:16
Everybody real close community
4:19
here in town. Everybody knows
4:21
everybody, and all the people
4:23
here had watched him all the way through, so everybody
4:26
was like our son being drafted. When
4:29
you saw him in high school, when you were coaching
4:31
him playing football, did you think he had the potential
4:33
to be an NFL player? Oh?
4:36
Absolutely. He was far
4:38
beyond his years, you know, and he's a young guy
4:41
anyway right now. But just
4:43
the way he carried himself, even as a freshman,
4:46
he came in and knew
4:49
how to work, didn't He was real self motivated
4:51
and he had all the things
4:54
that was needed in the package.
4:57
I'm sure you watched him a little bit in high school as much
4:59
as or in college as much as you can if when you've seen
5:01
him evolved, what are some of the biggest things
5:03
you noticed from his high school career to his college career,
5:06
well, he's gotten so much figuring.
5:08
And he graduated high school seventeen years
5:10
old. So we knew if
5:13
we weren't going to get another year with him, we knew
5:15
eventually he would you grow
5:17
into that. But he's
5:20
just so smart and so football smart
5:22
and book smart that
5:25
we knew it wouldn't be a problem. And we
5:27
figured, you know, he didn't play center for us. He
5:29
played tackle for us a little bit and then played
5:31
some guard his senior year. But we
5:34
kind of knew that just because of his
5:37
understanding of the game, the center would be a
5:39
spot and be able to line everybody
5:41
up. So just
5:43
watching him go to and grow immature
5:47
into a young man is very special
5:49
for I know the Saints will probably play
5:51
him at center as much as any other position,
5:53
but you mentioned his versatility. Is
5:55
he capable of playing the other two positions there,
5:58
whether it's tackle or guard in the NFL's uh,
6:01
you know, we think so. You know, it's such
6:03
a different league than what we play in, but uh,
6:06
I know for us he could have played anywhere.
6:08
He played a little bit of defensive line for us and
6:10
a goal line package, and and uh,
6:13
he just Uh, he's just a good football
6:15
player. What type of person is he? I
6:17
know you talked about a little bit his book,
6:19
smarts and the type of person he was
6:21
on and off the field, But what type of personality
6:24
did Eric hav in high school? Well,
6:26
he's very outgoing and uh everybody
6:29
and everybody in the building knew who he was.
6:31
He may not have known them, but just
6:33
because of the way he treated people, he's very Um,
6:38
he doesn't meet a stranger. Uh, he doesn't
6:40
judge people. And he's just he is who
6:42
he is. And and and
6:45
I said the other day, Uh, he's
6:48
the same person whether somebody's looking
6:50
at him or somebody's not, he is, he
6:53
is who he is, and he's definitely a
6:55
full package. Any good stories from
6:57
his high school days that you can you can mention
6:59
here that whether it'llmbarrass him or just even
7:01
a good story on the field, that that Saints
7:04
fans will like to know, you know, I'm
7:06
sure they are. I can't think any right now. I just
7:08
know that every day he came to came to
7:10
school, he had everything
7:12
he needed. He had a pencil, and he was ready to go
7:15
and and just
7:17
to very very highly fultivated
7:19
young man, how often do you
7:22
all talk. I'm sure you have a relationship
7:24
with Eric. How much of being able to communicate since
7:26
he went to college at University of all Right, Texas? A
7:28
and M excuse me, Well, we have
7:30
a very special thing here. You know,
7:32
we're of a community or town about thirty five
7:34
thousand, so it's a small, small
7:37
place. We got about twenty two hundred kids in the
7:39
high school, and all our
7:42
kids come back. We have a special spot for
7:44
him that they come in on Friday nights. We
7:46
have a pass and they just come up. They have to come
7:49
to the office and pick it up and they
7:52
just come in and we take care of
7:54
them because they took care of us. And and
7:57
so you know, we see him quite a bit.
8:00
We like for the kids to go off. We like for them
8:02
to go see other things and and
8:05
uh learn that you know, this is not
8:07
the only place, but we sure
8:09
like when they come back. So a very special thing
8:11
we got going here. So does that mean he did come
8:13
back a lot as much as much as he could, as
8:16
much as he could, you know. And and uh,
8:19
you know his mom still she teaches at
8:22
a school here close. She was here and
8:24
um, you know, she was part of our mother's
8:26
club, which was our booster club for
8:30
the football team, and uh, you know, still
8:32
very active. Uh, they don't miss many games
8:35
even now. His senior's sisters
8:38
a senior here at the school and so um.
8:41
You know, one thing, one thing that he did,
8:43
he left the combine and which had a great
8:45
combine and flew
8:48
straight back to Houston,
8:50
drove up and then had lunch with his sister
8:53
before he ever went home. You know, it's just a good, good
8:56
brother and a good family guy, and that
8:58
just kind of explains who he is. Have you able
9:00
to talk to him since he got drafted or has he been
9:02
you guys been super busy. I haven't been able to connect yet.
9:05
Now. I talked to him Friday
9:08
late and then Saturday either head a little get
9:10
together a little with the family and friends.
9:13
Went over and saw him Saturday night and got
9:16
spent a little time with him and Kiki Qt,
9:19
which were teammates, and he
9:23
was pretty excited and all the family was
9:25
there and a lot of the players and most
9:28
of the coaches were there. So just
9:30
a good family out him. Did
9:32
you give him any advice as far as going pro
9:35
or if so, if not, what vice
9:37
would you give him as he starts his NFL career.
9:40
Well, you know, I didn't give any advice.
9:42
I hugged his neck and told him I loved him, and
9:45
he knew that. You
9:47
know, I think one of the biggest things is is to
9:49
find somebody, find a mentor
9:51
find an older guy that's going to take care of him
9:54
and help him through this first part because
9:56
it's so different than what he's been doing. And
10:01
just make sure that you
10:03
know, he takes his time on
10:06
his decisions, and he's got good people
10:08
around him, and all teams have them, they
10:10
all have them. Well, he've got a guy that Don
10:13
Muelbauch has been snapping for the Detroit Lions
10:15
for fifteen years, and you know he's
10:18
one of those old guys that can help him
10:20
and talk to him and get him through
10:22
this because he's seen all, seen it all. Now,
10:25
I know most of you are probably Dallas Cowboy
10:27
fans or whether Houston Texans fans
10:29
or any of those NFL teams they're in
10:31
Texas. Are we converting any of you to New
10:33
Orleans Saints fans now that Eric is a part of the squad
10:36
couple? I promise my wife
10:39
She went online Friday night late
10:41
try to find a Saints jersey.
10:43
So we're very supportive of our kids.
10:46
We we like the teams
10:48
that they're at just because we like them. You know, there
10:50
are a lot of them. Will have a Texans
10:53
jersey and a Lions jersey
10:55
and a Saints jersey. You know, we just we just really
10:57
support our kids. Now, how many do you have
10:59
now in the NFL? Can you you're
11:02
able to figure out how many are right now? I
11:05
believe they are three active right
11:07
now. With those three,
11:11
I believe that's right. Okay. And so it's
11:13
only a six hour drive to the Superdome from
11:16
Lufkin. Are you going to try to make a trip here and there
11:18
or maybe your wife wanting to get in the car and drive and watch
11:20
him play? Oh yeah, we went two
11:23
years ago. They played on Money Now played the Detroit
11:25
Line. So we drove down and watched you
11:27
bach and got to stand
11:29
on the sideline before the game. So it's a
11:32
good place and we really enjoyed it. So when
11:35
he went, we thought, well there's another Christmas
11:37
trip, So we were chatted about
11:39
it all right. Now the schedule's value, all can start planning.
11:41
That's good stuff. Todd I really appreciate
11:44
thanks for shutting some light on Eric. I know we're really
11:46
excited to have him here in New Orleans,
11:48
and I hope to talk to you down the road. Yes,
11:50
sir, we sure appreciate it. Again, a big thanks
11:52
to Todd for joining us this morning. Can tell how proud
11:55
of you is of Eric McCoy, who is now a member
11:57
of the New Orleans Saints out of Texas an
12:00
It was the Saints second round pick and forty
12:03
eighth overall. Again, if you miss
12:05
the draft recap show with Sean
12:07
Kelly and John the Chaser, you can watch it on New Orleans
12:09
Saints dot com, the Mobile, lap, Facebook,
12:12
Twitter, YouTube, you name it, that's
12:14
where the show will be again. This is the last
12:16
week of shows and leading up to Saints
12:19
training camp in July, will take a brief
12:21
little hiatus, get some rest and
12:23
get you ready for another season of Saints football
12:25
and Pelicans basketball. Will still do plenty
12:28
of podcasts throughout the ways. We'll have some
12:31
NBA Draft Lottery podcasts, some NBA
12:33
Draft podcasts, and again, you never
12:35
know what else we'll have in store for you, maybe some summer league
12:37
stuff for you as well. For the New Orleans
12:40
Pelicans still with a week to go. Sean Kelly
12:42
will have your Wednesday show with former Saints kicker
12:44
John Carney. He'll join the show on Wednesday,
12:47
and then Caroline Gonzalez and Ashley Amos
12:49
will put a bow on this season for the
12:51
Black Ruby Report. And that is yours on
12:54
Friday, and you can listen on New
12:56
Orleans Saints dot com, the mobile lap for
12:58
both sites, same with Pelicans dot Com, and
13:01
of course you can download the show at iTunes.
13:03
A big thanks for all of you that listen to the Monday show
13:06
or any show you may listen to. I appreciate
13:09
having you a part of our
13:11
lives here with the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans. And we'll
13:13
move back again for another season come
13:15
training camp until Wednesday, which
13:17
Sean Kelly, I'm Daniel Salerson. Thanks
13:19
for listening to The Black and Blue Report.
