Rabbeinu Nissim of Gerona (The 'Ran') lived during a tumultuous, and difficult time for world Jewry. Though the trend of the era was towards philosophy and mysticism, the Ran worked hard to offer a rationale, and pragmatic approach to living a meaningfully Jewish life.
