Welcome to Brainstuff from how Stuff Works,

0:06

Hey, brain Stuff Lauren Vogelbaum here, our

0:09

fifty nifty United States may

0:11

have had several more siblings if things

0:13

had turned out differently. For Over the past

0:15

one fifty years, more than a few

0:17

additional states have been proposed, such

0:19

as tex Lahoma and Nikko Jack.

0:22

The state of tex Lahoma was proposed shortly

0:24

before World War Two. The state

0:27

would have been a combination of rural swaths

0:29

of northern Texas and western Oklahoma.

0:31

It was pushed for by residents of those areas

0:33

who wanted better roads. The car

0:35

was becoming ubiquitous at the time, but American

0:38

roads were in terrible condition, especially

0:40

in the oft overlooked rural areas.

0:43

If tex Lahoma came to be citizens reckoned,

0:45

they could build the good roads their region needed.

0:48

The proposal, designed by Oklahoma a

0:50

p Sites, did garner some attention,

0:53

including the backing of then Vice President

0:55

John Nance Garner the Fourth but the

0:57

proposal died when the Texans realized

0:59

it would result in their becoming tex

1:02

Lahmans and losing their identity as

1:04

Texans was unacceptable. In

1:06

addition to that one, at least two states were

1:08

proposed during the Civil War as protests

1:10

against the Confederate States of America and

1:13

its push for secession from the Union. Nika

1:15

Jack was one a combination

1:17

of southeast Tennessee and northern Alabama.

1:20

This area was full of Southern Unionists,

1:22

poor residents who did not own plantations

1:25

or slaves, and were not in favor of secession

1:27

or the Confederacy. Residents of

1:29

these areas put forth their idea in the hopes

1:32

of squashing the secessionist movement in

1:34

their states, But after a majority

1:36

of Alabama's and Tennesseeans voted

1:38

in favor of secession, the nika Jack

1:41

proponents decided it was too dangerous to proceed

1:43

with their proposal, and the matter was dropped.

1:46

The common folk residents of Scott County, Tennessee,

1:49

also wanted to secede from their state leading

1:51

up to the Civil War, believing that joining

1:53

the Confederacy was neither necessary nor

1:55

wise. But unlike the nika

1:58

jack Ians, the people here were pro active

2:00

and made a formal proclamation of secession

2:02

to the state government, dubbing themselves the

2:04

Free and Independent State of Scott.

2:07

The state didn't fight Scott, it simply

2:10

ignored the proclamation. In nineteen

2:12

eight six, Scott County formally requested

2:14

to be readmitted to Tennessee. The

2:17

state accepted the request, and even through

2:19

Scott a party and

2:21

hey ever ponder Michigan's odd shape.

2:24

The midwestern state is comprised of two

2:26

pieces of land, a lower Mitten shaped

2:28

portion and the Up or Upper Peninsula,

2:31

which is actually attached to the neighboring

2:33

state of Wisconsin. The first whispers

2:35

of up separating from Michigan to become

2:37

an independent state of Superior came

2:40

in eighteen fifty eight, but the ensuing

2:42

Civil War quashed the discussion. Yet

2:45

the idea of creating Superior, named

2:47

after the great Lake that the region hugs, has

2:49

been broached several times over the ensuing

2:51

century. While the initial proposal

2:54

was for the new state to be comprised of the Up

2:56

and some tracts of land in the upper portions

2:58

of Lower Michigan and Wasson, more

3:00

recent pushes were just for the up to

3:03

become Superior. And

3:05

meanwhile, speaking of peninsula's, Delaware

3:08

is comprised of the bulk of a small peninsula

3:10

on the east coast, with Maryland and Virginia

3:13

laying claim too tiny chunks of it. Over

3:16

the years, various proposals have been floated

3:18

to create one peninsular state, with

3:20

most plans calling for Maryland and Virginia

3:22

to seed their land Delaware, the new

3:24

state being called del Marva.
