Hello and
0:04
welcome to a another exciting
0:07
episode of Bridge the Gap where
0:07
we're balancing life through
0:11
health, wealth, business and
0:11
relationships.
0:16
Alright, welcome to the show
0:16
everyone. My name is Colton
0:18
Cockerell. And this is kind of a
0:18
weird introduction because I
0:21
have with me my lovely co host
0:21
and our special guest today Miss
0:26
Trisha Stetzel. Trisha, what's going on?
0:27
Hey, Colton. I'm
0:27
really excited about today's
0:31
show. And, you know, we talked
0:31
about doing the intro a little
0:34
bit different, but I think we
0:34
just kind of went with the flow.
0:37
And we're just where we're at,
0:37
right? So yeah, welcome,
0:41
everyone. This month, this month
0:41
shows are going to focus on
0:44
business success for the whole
0:44
month of April. And today, we're
0:49
going to focus on success
0:49
mindset. And better,
0:54
who better?
0:54
Better to talk to you about
0:57
mindset and Trisha Stetzel? I
0:57
mean, business coach, my
1:00
goodness, I am
1:01
super excited.
1:01
Thank you for allowing me to
1:05
come on and talk about success
1:05
mindset. But before we dive in,
1:09
I just want everyone to know
1:09
that today's segment is
1:12
sponsored by Sharer McKinley
1:12
Group, LLC.
1:16
Okay. All
1:16
right now, well, thank you so
1:18
much for not for getting our
1:18
part sponsor there. So let's
1:20
jump in. I know, you know, we don't have a lot of time. So I want to make sure we maximize
1:22
the time that we have. I think
1:25
the first question that I have,
1:25
and a lot of people probably
1:28
have, too is you hear the word
1:28
mindset a lot. Can you explain
1:31
what mindset is? Yeah,
1:33
absolutely. So
1:33
let me give you a picture, I
1:36
want you to think about a
1:36
mountain, right in this big
1:38
mountain, you're standing at the
1:38
bottom of the mountain, and
1:41
you're really looking to get to
1:41
the top of the mountain. And
1:44
what I want you to think about
1:44
is the thoughts that you have,
1:49
or the language that you use. So
1:49
that self talk the language that
1:53
you're using outwardly. And
1:53
inwardly, the way you talk about
1:56
yourself, will actually drive as
1:56
we move up the mountain, your
2:00
feelings and your beliefs. So
2:00
that talk those thoughts will
2:05
drive your feelings and your
2:05
beliefs. And as you climb up the
2:08
mountain, those feelings and
2:08
beliefs are going to drive your
2:11
actions, which will in turn
2:11
drive your results, right. So
2:14
we're really starting at the
2:14
bottom of the mountain, and the
2:18
language that we use outwardly
2:18
and inwardly, moving into the
2:22
way we believe or feel turns
2:22
into our actions and our
2:27
results. So if you're standing
2:27
at the bottom of the mountain,
2:31
and you're using negative
2:31
language, and you're talking to
2:33
yourself negatively, and you're
2:33
hanging around negative people,
2:36
guess what that result is going
2:36
to be when you get to the top of
2:38
mountain
2:39
negativity
2:40
yeah. opposite
2:40
of that. If you're using that
2:45
positive language, that positive
2:45
self talk, you're hanging around
2:48
with the right people, then you
2:48
start to feel and believe that
2:52
positivity, which drives your
2:52
actions and your beliefs. So
2:56
that's really what mindset is
2:56
all about. It all starts
2:59
inwardly and with that language
2:59
that you use with yourself.
3:03
Interesting. So the whole adage about, you know, the 10 people you surround
3:05
yourself with that's, you know,
3:08
that's who you're going to become. That's That's true.
3:10
It's absolutely
3:10
true Colton. So I don't know if
3:13
I've ever talked to you about
3:13
this book. I tell people all the
3:15
time, read the book, who is in
3:15
your room. It was co authored by
3:19
Dr. Ivan Meisner, and it is the
3:19
best book it talks about who you
3:24
allow in your room. And once
3:24
they're in how in the world, do
3:26
you get them out of your room if
3:26
they don't belong there? Because
3:30
we know that the five people you
3:30
spend the most time with you
3:36
become the average of so if
3:36
you're not hanging around with
3:40
people that are smarter, better,
3:40
faster, stronger than you, you
3:43
are absolutely in the wrong room.
3:46
That's that's
3:46
interesting. I guess I was being
3:49
generous with the 10. But no,
3:49
five, I think five people I hang
3:52
out with
3:55
friends. It's okay. Yeah.
3:58
So I think so
3:58
we understand or you've
4:00
explained what the mindset is,
4:00
and hopefully you have some type
4:03
of infographic you can give me
4:03
so I can see the mountain. But
4:07
can you also tell me now, what
4:07
is a success mindset?
4:13
So when we, when
4:13
we think about that success
4:16
mindset, in a in a business
4:16
setting, right, the thing that's
4:19
going to be important for you to
4:19
focus on is having a growth
4:23
mindset versus a fixed mindset,
4:23
meaning you're looking at today,
4:28
here and now. And you think that
4:28
that is the end all be all
4:32
right? If you really believe
4:32
that that is as far as you can
4:37
go or as far as you can get.
4:37
Then it's true. Right? But if
4:41
you have a growth mindset, and
4:41
you believe that you can reach
4:46
that goal, attain that goal,
4:46
create that vision, then you
4:49
will, it's the same, right, we
4:49
talked about that. I'm going to
4:52
go back to the mountain, you're
4:52
standing at the bottom of the
4:55
mountain, and you're telling you
4:55
yourself you can then you will
5:00
If you're telling yourself that
5:00
you can't, then you won't. So
5:04
you've got to have that growth.
5:04
mindset. You also need to adapt
5:11
an abundance mentality versus a
5:11
scarcity mentality. One of the
5:15
things that we talk to our
5:15
clients a lot about is Victor
5:18
victim. As you can imagine the
5:18
victim below the line, a little
5:23
guy with the saggy head, right?
5:23
He has a scarcity mentality,
5:27
meaning he doesn't share. He's
5:27
blaming people all the time.
5:31
He's always negative, right?
5:31
Where you've got positivity
5:35
above the line or that abundance
5:35
mindset, there's plenty to go
5:39
around, you're sharing, you're
5:39
collaborating your mind storming
5:45
with people. And that is such a
5:45
better mindset to be in if you
5:49
really want growth or success in
5:49
your business. Here's a good
5:53
one. What if you just stopped
5:53
fearing failure? Do you feel
6:00
fear? Fear of failure? Most of
6:00
us do? Right? in some fashion?
6:04
Yeah, I mean,
6:04
I guess I guess I in a sense, I
6:07
would mean, I feel like I'm doing a private coaching session. This is great.
6:11
What if we just
6:11
stopped it? What if we just
6:14
stopped fearing failure and
6:14
looked at it instead? As an
6:19
opportunity to learn? Yeah,
6:19
that's interesting, right?
6:25
Creating long term visions
6:25
instead of short term goals is
6:29
where a lot of people get stuck.
6:29
You know, that is another thing
6:32
that that a lot of us may do
6:32
wrong. We're just looking in the
6:34
short term, what can I do in the
6:34
next three to six months? What
6:38
can I do in the next year,
6:38
instead of looking all the way
6:41
out to that vision? I want to
6:41
take a vacation next year, I
6:44
want to get married, I want to
6:44
own a business. I want to own 12
6:47
businesses, I want my business
6:47
to earn $10 million. Right?
6:51
Looking out, that gives us a
6:51
success mindset, because we're
6:55
setting that vision out. By the
6:55
way, what if I told you another
7:00
great success mindset is don't
7:00
be afraid to break the rules.
7:05
Break the rules, so you're gonna have to probably go into that one too, a
7:07
little bit.
7:09
Yeah. And it
7:09
really is about Don't break the
7:12
law. Don't break the law.
7:16
Thanks for the clarification.
7:18
Don't be afraid
7:18
to break the rules, meaning
7:21
changes, okay. Don't just keep
7:21
doing something because it's
7:26
always been done that way. Think
7:26
outside the box is absolutely
7:31
okay to go outside of the norm
7:31
and break the rules, right?
7:35
Carve your own path, blaze your
7:35
own trail. That's really what
7:40
don't be afraid to break the
7:40
rules is about and the last one
7:43
that I'll tell you before I let
7:43
you ask me another question is
7:47
listen to your gut. If your gut
7:47
says, ooh, yeah, don't do that.
7:52
You probably don't want to do
7:52
that. But if your gut says, You
7:54
know what? It's scary. But don't
7:54
be afraid. Listen to your gut,
8:00
and go for it. Right. And if
8:00
you're not surrounding yourself
8:03
with people who support your be
8:03
hag or your big, hairy,
8:07
audacious goal, right, your long
8:07
term vision, that big thing that
8:11
you really want, you're in the
8:11
wrong room, you need to hang
8:13
around with people that support
8:13
your goal, and trust your gut.
8:19
So and that
8:19
said, I mean, again, what what
8:21
you're describing sounds
8:21
incredible. Why aren't more
8:25
people doing it?
8:27
Because it's not
8:27
easy, right? It's not easy. Now
8:30
listen, Colton, you and I are
8:30
both people who live above the
8:33
line. I know this about you,
8:33
right? We're very positive
8:35
people, we can typically put a
8:35
silver lining around just about
8:41
anything. You know, when we,
8:41
when we were talking, we're
8:44
talking before this call. I had
8:44
some things right. I like but
8:47
I'm good. We're just gonna get
8:47
past it. Because I have good
8:50
news too. And I think, number
8:50
one, you really need to find a
8:57
mentor, or an accountability
8:57
partners, somebody who's going
9:00
to help you stretch somebody
9:00
who's going to keep you above
9:04
the line. find challenging new
9:04
situations to put yourself at.
9:10
Think of failure as a learning
9:10
opportunity, as I said before,
9:13
right. So don't be afraid to
9:13
fail. Treated as a learning
9:17
opportunity. Keep a folder of
9:17
all your successes. What if
9:22
every time you started to go
9:22
below the line and you were that
9:25
wha wha wha guy you are able to
9:25
pull out a file of all of the
9:30
amazing things that you did just
9:30
in the last six months, or in
9:34
the last six years, however far
9:34
back you want to go. But would
9:38
that help you pull yourself back
9:38
above the line? Surround
9:42
yourself with bigger, better,
9:42
smarter, faster people because
9:46
they will help you along the way
9:46
and pull you up back up above
9:51
the line. Disconnect from things
9:51
that stress you out. If it
9:57
stresses you out, stop it If the
9:57
person stresses you out, leave
10:02
them. Right. I know that all of
10:02
that sounds really easy. And I
10:06
know it is not. It is not easy.
10:06
But if you start to adapt one
10:11
thing at a time, it gets easier
10:11
down the road, but you got to
10:15
surround yourself with the right
10:15
people. If you're hanging around
10:17
with people that are turkeys,
10:17
you'll never soar like an eagle.
10:21
Right? So go hang around with
10:21
those eagles.
10:23
Yeah, no
10:23
turkeys. So and and just just
10:27
for our listeners, cuz I know we've talked about this a lot. But can you just explain the
10:29
line that you're referring to?
10:33
The above the
10:33
line and below the line? Yeah,
10:35
absolutely. So it goes back to
10:35
my vector victim that I
10:40
described right when I talk
10:40
about. So I love to all of my
10:45
friends know what above and
10:45
below the line me because we
10:48
know right everyone smile, we go
10:48
below the line. So that below
10:51
the line, meaning that you're
10:51
really taking on that victim
10:56
mentality, you're negative,
10:56
you're blaming you, no matter
11:02
what you do, it's all wrong.
11:02
You're talking to yourself in a
11:05
negative way. Right? So that is
11:05
below the line. And I'm not
11:08
saying that we don't go there
11:08
because we absolutely do. And
11:12
it's that mentality of scarcity
11:12
as well. Right? I hold things
11:16
close to the vest, because I'm
11:16
afraid somebody's gonna steal my
11:18
ideas, whatever that looks like.
11:18
And then above the line is your
11:21
your Victor. And that is your
11:21
positive silver lining person,
11:26
they probably drive you insane,
11:26
because you think they're there
11:28
all the time, right? Is there a
11:28
positive and they live in a
11:33
world of abundance, and they
11:33
share and they collaborate. And
11:37
that's really what I mean, when
11:37
I'm talking about above the
11:39
line. And below the line is,
11:39
when you're below the line, be
11:44
aware of it and pull yourself
11:44
back to the top and create that
11:48
positive space that success
11:48
mindset.
11:52
And so let me ask because I think and I want to hit on this still, because I
11:54
think this is so important,
11:56
especially for, you know,
11:56
business owners, what besides
12:01
the, you know, keeping a folder
12:01
of you know, your successes,
12:03
what are other ways that you can
12:03
get your mindset, right back out
12:07
of the view below the line
12:07
mentality?
12:12
I really believe
12:12
that if you take inventory, and
12:19
you look internal, right, you're
12:19
looking intrinsically to
12:23
yourself, What are the words
12:23
that you're saying to yourself,
12:26
because I'm good. And I'll go
12:26
back to, which is why we talked
12:29
about the law of self control at
12:29
the beginning, right? This
12:32
amount. If you're talking
12:32
negatively to yourself, if you
12:37
believe negative things, and
12:37
everything that comes out the
12:40
other end is going to be
12:40
negative. So all I'm asking
12:43
people to do is shift one thing.
12:43
And if you say to yourself
12:48
today, here's an example. I am
12:48
not a morning person, I don't
12:52
like mornings, I'm terrible. In
12:52
the morning, I don't like to get
12:54
up in the morning, if you tell
12:54
yourself that consistently, you
12:58
will believe it, you will take
12:58
action or none. And the result
13:03
will be you don't get up in the
13:03
morning, right. But if you just
13:06
take one small shift, and sleep
13:06
is just one of those things,
13:11
right? It could be coffee or
13:11
tea, I don't know, whatever,
13:14
whatever the thing is, right? If
13:14
you tell yourself today, maybe
13:20
I'm almost a morning person, or
13:20
I could be a morning person
13:26
three days a week. Try it and
13:26
see what happens. Right? I'm
13:32
gonna be a morning person on
13:32
Thursdays. When you tell
13:37
yourself that you start to
13:37
believe it, you feel it, you
13:40
take action on it, and it
13:40
becomes a result for you. It all
13:44
starts with the language. Its
13:44
intrinsic, right? The
13:47
constraints that we have with
13:47
anything, when we talk about
13:50
change the constraints 80% of
13:50
the time is something between
13:53
your ears, it's your mindset 80%
13:53
of the time you're getting in
13:58
your own way. So get out of your
13:58
way and make that 1% change. And
14:03
you could be actually a morning
14:03
person. How about that? Yeah. So
14:07
you put your you play golf,
14:07
right, pull it off. So if you
14:12
hired a Swing Coach, and they
14:12
came out and checked out your
14:15
swing, and they made an
14:15
adjustment, it would be a very
14:17
small adjustment, I assume,
14:17
right? Move your thumb or your
14:21
wrist or your hip or your ankle,
14:21
right one way or another. How
14:25
much of a difference does that
14:25
1% that tiny little shift in
14:30
your swing make when you drive
14:30
the ball?
14:34
Oh, it's pretty significant. And Another great
14:35
tidbit by Trisha Stetzel, and I
14:35
it's huge,
14:35
right? It's the same thing when
14:38
we talk about success mindset,
14:38
tiny little shifts, right? Don't
14:42
try to turn your whole day
14:42
upside down and say, Trisha said
14:47
I need to be a morning person.
14:47
I'm gonna get up at 530 every
14:51
morning and work at No, stop it
14:51
right, baby steps. It's all
14:55
about creating that 1% shift
14:55
that's going to run result in
14:59
something really big, right? How
14:59
much work could you do if you
15:00
think you're really kind of
15:00
hovering into I feel like habit
15:04
actually decided you are a
15:04
morning person on Thursday? Huge.
15:13
forming territory, because
15:13
that's kind of what that sounds
15:15
like with the mind with as
15:15
you're continuing this success
15:19
mindset, you're having to form
15:19
new successful habits. And so
15:23
real quick, we've got about 30
15:23
seconds, tell me, what is the
15:26
best way to form a habit?
15:29
Best way to form
15:29
a habit? Well, number one, you
15:33
just kind of start practicing it
15:33
right. So you have to decide. So
15:36
that's the very first thing so
15:36
decide and start practicing it.
15:40
And you need to do it for at
15:40
least a minimum of 21 days. 21
15:45
days is what's going to help you
15:45
create that habit. It also takes
15:49
that long to get rid of a bad one.
15:51
Trisha, thank
15:51
you so much for being on my
15:53
podcast just kidding. Being on
15:53
our podcast. It was great having
15:57
you and again hearing insight
15:57
from one of our own. I'd love
