I binged this show in one day - and there is a lot to love here. A collaboration between Aaron Mahnke and Lauren Shippen? Well that's a goddam dynamite idea. Lauren leads the pack when it comes to Audio Dramas and the writing here is tense and clever. The direction and acting is first-rate, with special recognition to Melissa Ponzio's Anne and Karan Soni's Vipin. And so much of the lore at the heart of this story is eerie and exciting. Phantom voicemails? Six-foot dogs with red eyes? human sacrifice?! But there are also moments where it feels like you have to fight to keep your interest in this story. Misha Collins is a bummer as Jeremy - when he's not asking endless "but how?" questions to keep the plot unfolding, he's reminding you that he's a skeptic (as if you could forget.) Misha just seems like he's very bored the entire series and it weighs on you. I understand why Jeremy needs to be a sceptic, both from a characterization standpoint and a story structure standpoint, but there's a hour of "there's a rational explanation!" that just isn't needed to remind me our protagonists are at odds. Some shows end so spectacularly that it leaves you begging for a second season. Other shows leave you with so many loose ends that a second season is a necessity. This show sits firmly in the latter camp, and it's a shame because there is so much in the first eight episodes of this show that are so good. Dogs with red eyes and phantom voicemails, if we're lucky this show will continue and we'll get some answers.
