For our next three episodes, Host Sabrina Clarke welcomes four new dinner guests to the BRKIN Bread table. Our host is joined by Elizabeth, Laura, Keith and Reetu. The conversation cuts to the bone of society’s pressing issues before the guests are asked about who they would like to invite for dinner. In a BRKIN Bread first, one of our guests mentions a woman! Who? We won’t spoil the answer here.
Sabrina then opens up the discussion by revisiting the recent news scandal, where The Sun reported that a well-known BBC presenter, now revealed to be Huw Edwards, had allegedly paid a teenager "more than £35,000 in return for sordid images" based on allegations by their mother and stepfather. Shortly before Edwards was named, the Metropolitan Police reported that it had found no evidence of a crime and would not investigate further. Sabrina then shares the story of Glodi Wabelua, who was jailed in 2019, with two other men, for a drug trafficking case where they used youth as drug mules. It was a landmark case of modern slavery. Glodi, who himself was groomed, was sentenced to three and a half years. He serves some of the sentence and is released. Upon release, he changes his life by starting his own fitness company and turning away from a life of crime. However, Glodi is asked to return to prison as the result of a clerical error, even though he has been free for 13 months.
Still with us? Good. The table is then asked to share their thoughts about who out of Huw Edwards and Glodi Wabelua should go to jail. There’s so much nuance here; the debate is tougher than a cheap steak. The discussion bravely traverses themes of justice and punishment and who has the right to decide on these matters. We get deeper than Atlantis and further explore the overlapping context around racism, privilege, the establishment and much more. Who gets to dodge the gavel and continue their travels, and WHY?
You can expect our guests to cut out all the legalese and make it plain as they share their thoughts – all of which could probably find their way into both a court of law and the court of public opinion.
Elizabeth, Laura, Keith and Reetu are BRKIN Bread Guests for Episodes 16-18.
