Sofia chats with the MAGNIFICENT Norm Lewis (Porgy and Bess, The Little Mermaid, Les Miserábles, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Jesus Christ Superstar Live!, The Who’s Tommy)!!! On Broadway, Norm is best known for starring as Porgy in the 2012 revival of Porgy and Bess, for which he earned a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Javert in the West End production of Les Miserábles as well as its 25th Anniversary Concert, the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, and originating the role of King Triton in The Little Mermaid. He made his Broadway debut in The Who’s Tommy. Norm has also starred as the titular Demon Barber of Fleet Street in the Barrow Street Theatre’s 2017 production of Sweeney Todd, Agwe in the current revival of Once in this Island, Billy Flynn in Chicago, Roger Delli-Bovi in A New Brain Off-Broadway, Eddie in The Wild Party, Sondheim on Sondheim, Miss Saigon, Side Show, Shakespeare in the Park’s The Tempest, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Captains Courageous, Dessa Rose, Amour and Golden Boy. Norm was most recently featured as Caiaphas in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! on NBC. On television, he has been featured on Scandal, Daytime Divas, Magnum Opus, Chicago Med, Gotham, The Blacklist and Blue Bloods, as well as the Live From Lincoln Center PBS productions of Showboat, “Norm Lewis: Who Am I?”, “New Year’s Eve: A Gershwin Celebration” “American Voices”, and “First You Dream: The Music of Kander and Ebb”. Norm will soon star as Harold Hill in the upcoming Broadway Center Stage production of The Music Man at the Kennedy Center! Norm’s new holiday album, The Norm Lewis Christmas Album, was released last week and is now available on iTunes and Spotify. Norm and I discuss the challenges of portraying the Phantom of the Opera, his introduction to Broadway music through a glee club, why Sweeney Todd works so well as an immersive theatre production, his new Christmas album and more!
