In this week's episode (recorded 5/30/20), Amanda speaks to Kristie Ferrantella, a woman who grew up in the small island community of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Kristie now serves on the Select Board, which is the governing body of the island and is also the President of the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce.   After high school, Kristie earned her undergraduate degree and her Master's Degree in Economics off-island, and worked in jobs in both Boston and Washington DC. Kristie then felt a pull to move back home. Driven by a desire to give back, she has dedicated her career and her free time to serving her island community.   Kristie shares about what gave her the confidence to run for office, what it was like to face the pandemic, and the work that goes into protecting and supporting thousands of people during a global health crisis. As of July 7th, Nantucket has seen just 27 Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, and it's due to the leadership and commitment of those like Kristie.   Kristie also encourages those who visit Nantucket this summer to help keep those numbers low by wearing a mask and social distancing. (NOTE: on June 29th, the Board of Health voted unanimously to issue an emergency order, making it mandatory to wear a face-covering in all outside public areas, as well as inside restaurants and shops downtown. The ruling is in place regardless of social distancing. It also includes Sconset.)     And, Kristie shares about ACK Saves, a local movement to support residents in need. Tourism, hospitality, and construction (major industries on the island) were hard hit by the pandemic. While Nantucket has a reputation for being an upper-class community, Kristie explains that many year-round residents are working and middle-class families, many of whom have lost significant income during this time.    To learn more about the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce or get involved, visit NantucketChamber.org. Additionally, to donate to ACK Saves, visit acksaves.org and help struggling island families.       Interested in connecting or finding out more about coaching or workshops? Get in touch!
