Nutrition and Training with James Buckingham
We are joined once again by Health & Fitness expert I James Buckingham of Precision Fitness Performance. In this episode we discuss the details of intermittent fasting and host Sam Harris realises he missing breakfast doesn't count, does his best to get another expert to say Vegan's are crazy [with a little bit more success this time] and James gives some fascinating insight and expertise into how fasting can benefit the body. We also look in depth at how to make your training specific to the sport you do or the goals you want to achieve, with some particular attention to rugby and martial arts but plenty in there for those who just want to get fit and healthy. James even tells us how to assess your own fast twitch and slow twitch muscle make up. A really interesting and helpful episode for anyone wanting to find out more about nutrition and training, with plenty of laughs along the way.
Fighting for a laugh with Andy Costello
In this episode Bunch of Apes regular and host Sam Harris's Brazilian Jujitsu coach Andy Costello joins us for a catch up. Starting with an update on both of their attempts at stand up comedy, Sam's desperate ploys a using children's light entertainer type approaches to get a clap and ignoring all Andy's advice to keep it short, stick to what you know and tell actual funny jokes.... We test Andy's integrity with the fantastic [or at least Sam thinks it is] game 'Moral Compass.' Plus we Love Island and how to make the show even more tortuous for the fame hungry contestants. Andy asks, what percentage of Love Island contestants would go down on an elderly person to stay on the show? Finally, Andy gives us some insight into his approach to diet and weight loss, using his recent success with one of his student as an example. A really fun episode to make and Andy was on top form. The bloke is hilarious.
The Evolution of the Human Diet with Briana Pobiner
Briana Pobiner is a paleoanthropologist whose research centers on the evolution of human diet (with a focus on meat-eating), but has included topics as diverse as human cannibalism and chimpanzee carnivore. She leads the Human Origins project at the Smithsonian in Washington DC and is a total expert in her area. This was an incredibly fascinating episode for anyone into the human story. In this episode we made the most of Briana's expertise to pick her brains about the involvement of eating meat in Human Evolution, host Sam asks if turning Vegan can make you de-evolve....it can't. We learn how scavenging for meat may have been our early ancestors most effective way to survive and how Briana's research led her into following Lions around the plains to see if they had finished their main course. We broke the entire course of Human history into a week and discovered that Homo-Sapiens turned up really late on Sat evening, took the house over and then trashed it. Plus we look at the evidence for people eating each other way before any crashed Argentinean rugby teams.
