In the first episode of Season Two, Brett reviews Robert Putnam's famous sociological study of American life. In "Bowling Alone," Putnam's massive collection of data shows a steep decline in the American individual's involvement in social life between the late 1960s and 2000. Why? The answers are surprising, even disturbing. Brett closes with an analysis of why religion, specifically evangelicalism, provides most of our country's social engagement even as it seems to play a key role in our social disenchantment.
