Business English Power, Episode 55. Aloha
0:06
and welcome to another episode of
0:08
Business English Power, the show for
0:10
ambitious English students who want to
0:12
level up their business English skills,
0:14
become global communicators and international business
0:16
leaders. My name is
0:18
Al, thank you so much for joining me today.
0:21
You might have known me online
0:23
on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, maybe
0:25
not, but other platforms out there
0:27
as Al Sensei. I did teach
0:30
in Japan for 18 years
0:33
and online now since 2010. So
0:36
thanks so much for listening today and
0:39
downloading and streaming. We're
0:41
going to get into pronunciation practice
0:43
today. Now if you
0:45
go back to episode 49, we
0:47
did our first episode for
0:50
pronunciation practice with the
0:52
topic of investing. So this is going to be
0:54
part two of that first
0:57
episode. So go back and listen to
0:59
49 if you haven't already and
1:01
then come back to this one to complete
1:05
this little mini series of pronunciation
1:07
practice with our investing
1:09
topic. All right, so
1:11
today we're going to get into more
1:13
investing, some of the deeper stuff
1:16
and how to pronounce these things that
1:18
you probably will hear on the news
1:20
and among your colleagues and
1:22
so that you can also say them
1:24
properly as well in conversations with
1:27
colleagues and business partners and
1:30
contacts from around the world. All
1:32
right, so before we get started, I'd just like
1:34
to kindly ask you to please share this
1:36
episode with a friend, a
1:39
classmate, a colleague. You can share
1:41
it out on social media, Facebook, Twitter,
1:44
whatever the case may be, email, you
1:47
can always do the old fashioned
1:49
thing and email someone the link and
1:51
I definitely would appreciate that. So we
1:53
can spread the message of business English
1:55
power. All right,
1:57
so today let's get into investing. we
2:00
did the basics. So go back and check that one out. We
2:03
did stocks, we did
2:05
bonds, we did mutual funds,
2:07
ETFs. Today we're going to get
2:09
into more of the stuff that you're going to hear
2:11
on the news, more of
2:13
the specifics. So that was more
2:16
of the general stuff
2:18
last week. So today
2:20
we're going to talk more about the stock market.
2:22
Now when you think of the
2:25
stock market, for example, when you're watching business
2:27
news channels or news stations,
2:30
maybe it could be
2:32
CNBC in America or Bloomberg, one of these
2:34
kind of stations, you're going to see that
2:37
little thing on the bottom of
2:39
the screen that's called the ticker, or
2:41
the stock market ticker. It's always showing you
2:43
the current updates on the
2:46
current stock prices. Now
2:49
they always show these other
2:51
things that we need to know what they mean, of
2:53
course, and then how to pronounce them. So
2:55
the first thing that we want to go over are
2:59
what's called indexes. Now
3:01
what is an index?
3:04
So examples, there's kind of, I want
3:06
to say three major indexes that are
3:09
used in America.
3:11
And you may have heard of them, that's the S&P 500,
3:14
the Dow Jones, and the NASDAQ
3:16
composite. Now let's go
3:18
over them one by one and talk
3:20
about what they mean. So the
3:23
S&P 500, let's start
3:26
with that. So what does that
3:28
mean? What does that come from? So it
3:31
comes from standard and poor, and there
3:34
were, I guess, some of the
3:39
first ones to start measuring and
3:41
grouping these stocks together. And so
3:44
what they did is
3:46
take 500 companies and they put
3:49
them all into one basket. So
3:52
these are 500 of the largest companies
3:56
in the US. And so this is considered a very,
3:59
very, very, very, very, very, very, one of the greatest
4:01
measurements of how the
4:04
investing world and stocks and just
4:06
the economy in general are doing.
4:09
And so they've taken the 500 of
4:12
the top companies that
4:14
have stocks in the US and
4:17
they kind of put them all
4:19
together and they have an aggregate
4:22
of how it's moving up or down. So that's
4:24
called an index. And you group a bunch of
4:27
stocks together and you look out, you kind
4:29
of chart its progress of how it goes
4:31
up and down and the trends and
4:34
that gives us an indication of how the stock
4:36
market is doing in general and
4:38
also the overall economy. So
4:41
that is the S&P 500. So
4:43
if you see that, now you know what it means. Now
4:46
to pronounce it, of course you can say the
4:48
full thing, Standard and Poor's 500. But
4:51
I don't think anybody ever says that today so all
4:54
you need to do is practice the
4:56
letter S and
4:58
then the word and and
5:01
then the letter P. Very simple. So
5:03
practice and repeat after me. S&P.
5:09
Okay, very good. So if you notice, I'm not saying
5:11
each individual S&P. We're
5:14
putting it all together. So because you
5:17
have this kind of a vowel beginning with
5:19
the S sound, moving
5:21
right into the and and then
5:23
the P. So S&P. So
5:27
one more time, repeat after me. S&P.
5:30
Okay, very good. Now
5:33
just add the 500 at the end. So
5:35
one more time. S&P 500. All
5:42
right, excellent. Let's move on
5:44
to our next term. So
5:46
this one you've probably heard a lot.
5:48
This is called the Dow Jones Industrial
5:50
Average. So what is
5:52
the Dow Jones Industrial Average? So
5:56
this index was created in 1896 and it measures 30
6:01
of the top companies in the US.
6:03
A lot of them are industrial as you can imagine,
6:05
but not all of them. And so
6:08
this is widely considered another
6:10
very good measurement of the stock
6:12
market. And so some
6:14
people just call it the Dow. So you
6:16
might just hear that term as well. The
6:19
Dow or the Dow
6:21
Jones. Now
6:25
to say Dow Jones.
6:27
Well, it's actually not terribly hard. So we
6:29
of course we start with the first one.
6:31
We have our D sound
6:34
with our tall A. So
6:36
the DA and then add a kind
6:38
of a U. So it's like a DAO. DAO.
6:43
So please pronounce after me DAO. Okay,
6:48
so that is how to say the first part
6:50
and the second one is Jones. Just like we
6:52
say the name Jones. But just
6:54
for practice again, we'll use our
6:57
J sound with the true
6:59
O or the regular
7:02
O sound. Joe with
7:05
the N sound and then followed
7:07
by the S which in this case
7:09
is gonna be more of a Z sound. Okay, so we
7:12
say Jones. Okay,
7:14
so please repeat after me Jones. All
7:20
right, very good. Let's put together DAO Jones.
7:25
Okay, very good. Or you can say the DAO.
7:30
Alright, so that is the DAO Jones. Now the
7:32
last one of the three is
7:34
called the NASDAQ composite.
7:37
Now, this is actually a separate stock market.
7:40
Just like you would see the New York
7:42
Stock Exchange, for example. And
7:44
so the NASDAQ really
7:47
is heavily including
7:49
or heavily includes, excuse
7:52
me, tech industries.
7:54
So for example, Amazon, Apple,
7:58
Microsoft are in the NASDAQ. composite.
8:01
And so the NASDAQ index
8:04
is designed to cover really
8:07
an indication of the whole thing. There's actually
8:09
over 3,000 companies that are listed in the
8:12
NASDAQ and it always kind of changes,
8:15
but it is considered a
8:18
very good measurement of
8:20
the economy and the stock market because
8:22
it does have those big tech companies
8:24
in it. So
8:26
the NASDAQ, let's practice that
8:28
one. So the
8:31
first part, and again you
8:33
don't necessarily need to say composite all the time,
8:35
but that's the technical term for it, but
8:37
we need to say the NASDAQ. You need to be able
8:39
to hear it as well as say it. And
8:42
so of course we have our N sound in this. Again
8:44
we're going to use our short A
8:46
sound or what I call the flat A sound.
8:48
Na, okay so not
8:50
NA, okay and
8:53
not NA but of course NA.
8:55
Your mouth wants to be flat.
8:58
NAS. And this S again
9:01
is more like a Z sound. It's not a
9:03
NAS but more of a NAS. Okay
9:05
so one more time. NAS. Okay
9:09
and then we say DAC. It's
9:11
spelled DAQ. However again the Q is going
9:13
to be more of like a CK sound.
9:17
And then we're going to use our short
9:19
A again. So with the D, DAC. Okay
9:23
remember not DOC and
9:25
not DUC but DAC.
9:30
Okay very good. Let's put it together. Please repeat. NASDAQ.
9:36
Okay very good. One more time. NASDAQ.
9:42
Alright excellent. Very good. Let's review
9:45
those indexes. Okay
9:47
the first one. We have the S&P
9:49
500. Then we have
9:51
the Dow Jones. And
9:53
third we have the NASDAQ. Alright
9:56
very good. Now let's
9:59
move on to something that is something
10:02
that has become very interesting in my
10:04
opinion and that is the realm of
10:06
cryptocurrencies. That's
10:09
another thing that people are starting
10:11
to invest in more and more these days. And
10:14
so it is now a category that we need
10:16
to practice. So the
10:18
first thing is to pronounce, of
10:21
course, the term cryptocurrency. Well
10:23
of course I think you are all okay with
10:25
the word currency. So
10:27
let's practice crypto. And you
10:29
can just often say crypto without
10:31
using currency if it's in
10:34
context. Okay so
10:36
of course we have our CR at the beginning,
10:38
so the CR sound. And here
10:40
we are going to use a short I
10:42
sound, CR. Okay,
10:45
CR. And remember
10:47
when we use that short I, we
10:49
want our throat to be loosened. We
10:52
don't want the tense E because when
10:54
you tense, when you add
10:56
that tension to your throat, it's going to be more
10:58
of an E sound. We don't want that. We
11:01
want the I. We want to loosen our throat a little bit so we say CR. Okay,
11:04
and then we are going to add the
11:07
P, the Crip. Crip
11:11
and then TOE. Okay, so again TOE is
11:13
like on your foot, your TOE. T-O
11:16
with a true O sound. So TOE, crypto.
11:22
Okay, please repeat after me. Crypto.
11:27
Okay, very good. Let's put it together. Cryptocurrency.
11:33
Okay, then we can make it plural as well. So let's try
11:35
it. Cryptocurrencies.
11:40
Okay, excellent. Now of course
11:43
there are many, many different types of cryptocurrencies
11:45
out there. We're just practice some of the
11:47
major ones. Of course the king
11:50
of all the cryptocurrencies of course is
11:52
Bitcoin. And so let's practice that one.
11:55
So again we have our B sound. Remember when
11:57
we say B, we definitely want to have our...
12:00
top and bottom lip coming
12:02
together and using
12:04
pressure to push that out some sound
12:07
and again we're going to add it with our short
12:09
i b with
12:11
our t bit okay
12:14
bit and then coin of
12:16
course coin is there c sound with
12:19
our o followed by an i
12:22
which is more of a i sound true i
12:24
sound so it's a coin right coin
12:28
okay let's
12:30
practice together bitcoin bitcoin
12:38
excellent and we'll do one
12:40
more today so the other one that's becoming very
12:42
popular is called ethereum so
12:45
that's another one of the major cryptocurrencies out
12:47
there there's a lot of others but let's
12:50
practice ethereum okay so the first part of
12:52
course is e you can say e and
12:55
then the thc so we
12:57
want the th with c e e c
13:00
and then we're going to add our r sound
13:04
okay remember the r we definitely want to
13:08
pressurize our the sides of our mouth to
13:10
make that true r sound re we're
13:13
going to make the re so
13:15
the r with the e the true e sound and
13:18
then the last part is um okay so
13:21
that is our flat or
13:23
the sorry short u which is
13:25
a schwa sound followed with
13:27
the m at the end um so
13:29
just like you're thinking um okay so
13:32
we put all together
13:34
we have ethereum okay
13:36
very good so you can start slowly and then build
13:38
it up as you go let's try it all together
13:41
ethereum okay
13:46
very good ethereum excellent
13:51
so let's put it in a sentence
13:53
example sentence so let's
13:55
practice please repeat after me I'm
13:59
invested. The thing in Bitcoin and
14:01
Assyrian. Game.
14:07
Or that I'm investing in
14:09
bitcoin and Assyrian. right?
14:14
Excellent! So that is our example
14:17
for today. So we've got a
14:19
lot of good things. You get
14:21
crypto currencies, Bitcoin is Syrian, and
14:23
then we talked about the stock
14:25
market index is as well. That's
14:29
gonna do it for part two: Investing men.
14:31
Maybe if gather instead we can do a
14:33
part three add on some topics, but that's
14:35
gonna wrap it up for part two. I
14:37
hope you enjoyed it. Please practice your pronunciation
14:40
as it is really important to get across
14:42
his ideas, but also it. Helps you're
14:44
listening as well. So want to thank
14:46
