Many people would say that to really thrive, you have to do the work. But what, really, is “the work”?

For Byron Katie, her practice—known as The Work—is a way of looking inward to solve difficult problems and find joy in your life. With both The Work and her book, Loving What Is, Katie encourages her followers all over the world to simply ask four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to “see what is troubling you in an entirely different light”.

Thrive Market co-founder Gunnar Lovelace has known Byron Katie since he was 19 years old, when they met in his hometown of Ojai, California during a particularly difficult time in his life. Their conversation in this episode of But Are You Thriving? is familiar, loving, and vulnerable—and it just might inspire you to try The Work for yourself.

Full Episode Summary:

This episode features a conversation between Thrive Market co-founder Gunnar Lovelace and Byron Katie, the creator of The Work, a process that helps individuals find freedom from suffering and anxiety. Lovelace introduces Katie and expresses his deep gratitude for the impact her work has had on his life. He shares personal experiences of meeting her and witnessing the power of her process.

Katie discusses how The Work is not tied to any specific spiritual or religious beliefs and emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for our lives and understanding our minds. She explains that our judgments about others are connected to unresolved beliefs or judgments we have about ourselves. Lovelace reflects on the significance of this insight and the ability of The Work to create space for self-reflection and turnarounds.

They discuss the exhausting nature of carrying judgments and unresolved issues in relationships. Lovelace mentions the simplicity of The Work's worksheet, which contains six questions, and encourages listeners to visit thework.com to access it. They explore the connection between mental well-being and thriving in all areas of life.

Lovelace shares his personal experience of doing The Work to understand his relationship with his mother and the anxiety he feels when she visits. He appreciates the honesty and simplicity of The Work, and Katie suggests that he can extend his practice to address other aspects of his life.

Katie emphasizes the importance of understanding that we are being breathed, talked, walked, and lived by life itself, rather than the ego taking credit for everything. She invites listeners to live in a meditative way and let go of the ego's self-centeredness.

In closing, Lovelace expresses his gratitude for Katie's work, encourages people to try The Work if they are suffering, and acknowledges the ongoing commitment required to clear the mind regularly.

Overall, this episode highlights the transformative power of Byron Katie's process, The Work, in helping individuals find freedom from suffering, take responsibility for their lives, and thrive in all aspects of life.
