MY FELLOW CACIQUES! In episode 5, we look at the labor market for La Ciudad Romántica. Studies have shown that unemployment rates are correlated with crime, therefore it's important to take a look at how unemployment is performing not only at the national level, but at the municipal level. We look at employment levels, unemployment levels/rates, and labor force participation levels/rates. Labor force participation in Puerto Rico has hovered around 40%, much lower than the US labor force participation rate of 60%. However, municipal rates can vary, and employment experience at the national level does not resemble employment experience at the municipal level. Along with the population decline and migration, low unemployment rates may not be painting a complete picture.
