There are two key components that make up a good coach: the ability to encourage and the ability to push. I'm a natural 'cheerleader', I've always been good at encouraging others and emphasizing positivity. The skill I've had to acquire as a coach is the ability to push my clients. We'll call it 'Tough Love'.

In Episode 39, I dive deeper into this concept of getting out of my comfort zone to push clients, not just encourage them.

This episode was encouraged by a recent coaching call I had inside of my Coaching Group, The Camera Brave Club. It was on our monthly Q&A Call that I realized one of my clients on the call was stalling. She had created something truly amazing, but wasn't putting it out into the world.

She had the courage to create the thing, but needed the push to publish it. I realized that I was the one who needed to guide her and push her. I couldn't just encourage what she'd created (which of course I did), but I needed to push her to that next step of publishing it.

I had to tell someone that is relatively new to my coaching group to get out of their own way, put that date on the calendar, and start talking about it with their audience.

To my clients that I've coached for some time, this isn't difficult for me to do. I can lay on the tough love when I see it's needed, because I know their goals and want to see them succeed. But for a newer client, I hesitated. This was our first Zoom call together, after all.

One thing I realized, is that by staying quiet and simply encouraging her, I was doing a disservice to this woman. I wasn't honoring the time and money she'd invested in being in my group by just giving her a thumbs up. So while I was a little uncomfortable and nervous to be so direct, I had to push past it.

And what happened? She responded incredibly to it. Why? Because she was seeking a coach! She wasn't seeking a cheerleader. She knew she needed a hand in getting to that next step and was ready to receive the advice I put her way.

To my coaches, know that tough love is not only a part of the process, it's essential to the process! Own your expertise. Own that your advice is valuable. And do not allow yourself and your clients to stay small by coaching from a place of fear. Instead, coach from a place of leadership.
