Read: Matthew 12:34, James 3:8
Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines communication as:“a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.”
Why is communication so important to relationships?· All relationships are fueled by communication.
Communication is not easy.· We live in a nation where 50 percent of wives say husbands don’t communicate.· 86 percent of those divorced say the cause was deficient communication.· 25 percent of young people indicate they have never had one meaningful conversation with their father. WE NEED HELP!
Our words have the power to take our relationships to a new level of impact and intimacy.
1. The foundation of communication is trust“Kind words are good medicine”(Proverbs 15:4 CEV)
2. Communication is always from the heart“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34 ESV)
3. Communication that makes an impact is honesty
Self-evaluation:· How many times last week did you give the “fine” answer?· How many times did it just seem easier to not be honest?· How many times did staying silent leave a relationship where it was when a moment of honesty could have deepened the relationship?
If we want our relationships to grow, honesty is nonnegotiable. When we are honest, we will always be “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). Look at the word truth in that verse, and look also at love. It takes both-truth wrapped in love.Truth without love doesn’t work. Love without truth is equally disastrous.
Thinking about My Relationships
Points to Ponder: It takes courage to communicate.Verse to Remember:“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21 NASB).
Questions to Consider: Is there someone who needs to hear you say….“I want to begin rebuilding trust”?“I recognize that my words reveal my heart?“I forgive you”?
