Welcome everybody to Omnisend’s marketing tip series, where in roughly 3 minutes or less each day, I’ll give you actionable tips on ways to improve your email & SMS marketing program and help you increase sales.

Yesterday I talked about using SMS inside of your automated messages. Today, I want to briefly discuss when and when not to use MMS.

When you receive a text message from a brand, typically you will see text and a link. This is an SMS.

When you receive an image with the message, this is an MMS.

Like with anything, an image can enhance the message you’re trying to convey. But that doesn’t mean you should always send an MMS.

When deciding when and when not to use an MMS, consider the message and the value it provides the customer. For example, if you’re sending a message about a general site sale, will an image really make that message more inviting? It’s debatable.

But, if you’re sending a message about new product arrivals or category-specific sale, it might b worth it. Or if you’re sending a message on a highly competitive day like Black Friday, an MMS may be needed just to stand out.

The same holds true for automated emails. For a welcome message, do you really need a generic hero image along with your SMS — probably not? But a product image for a product abandonment message, heck yeah!

People love images, so MMS can be a great addition to your text program but that does not mean you have to ALWAYS send an MMS to recipients.

Now, I should note. If you decide you want to send an MMS with every message there is nothing wrong with that. But it does cost more than sending only an SMS, so you should factor this increased cost into your strategy.

There you have it. When it comes to SMS and MMS, there is no right or wrong — you just need to decide what works best for your brand and test different use cases.

Thanks for tuning in to this episode of our marketing tips series. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions and be sure to check out Omnisend and let us prove how we can help you double your conversions.

Until next time, happy marketing!
