Welcome to Cause An Effekt – The podcast that brings you game-changers and their stories of disruption.

Each week on the show, we’ll sit down with a new disruptive entrepreneur and reveal what it took for them to build their business – everything from how they overcame psychological barriers, to how much it cost them to develop their first prototype. We’ll ask the personal questions that we all think about but never have the guts to ask. And it’s all to help you create your own disruptive business that changes the way we live.

The podcast was originally conceived of a couple of months ago, with the desire help aspiring entrepreneurs to cut through all of the clutter and figure out the vital elements of success. During that time, I’ve interviewed almost a dozen incredible entrepreneurs about how they started their businesses that are making a positive impact on the lives of so many.
What I came to realize in these conversations, some self reflection and a little research, is that the fastest way to drive change (which we hope is positive) is to create a true disruptive innovation – one that really forces us to stop and think about how we’ve been doing something all along, completely change that behavior or mindset and shift to doing things totally differently.

A couple of examples I use often are AirBNB and Uber. Before AirBNB, we were forced to stay in hotels whenever we traveled. All of a sudden, hundreds of thousands of beautiful homes and apartments have been opened up all across the planet, allowing us to keep money in our pockets, and help property owners earn some extra cash. Uber has totally changed the taxi experience. We no longer have to stand in the rain hoping to hail a cab on a cold winter’s night. Both businesses have been so disruptive, that they’ve had to spend a ton of time, money and resources on policy-fighting litigation just to be allowed to operate.

Change ain’t easy. People like to keep doing what they know.

But change is good. Change is vital. In fact, the only constant in life is change. And the quickest way to make change happen is to stop and look at how we’re doing things and ask ourselves, “is there a better way?” There is always a better way. But sometimes it requires us to stand on our heads to figure it out.

So that’s what we’ll be talking about with these disrupters – how they realized how to turn a product, service or industry on its head and solve a problem at the same time.
As I mentioned, there have been about a dozen interviews. Not all of them fit perfectly into this idea of disruption, so bear with me. We’ll get there. In the meantime, each of these interviews are jam-packed with valuable insights and lessons learned from successful business founders. You’ll get a lot of each one, I promise.

I also wanted to use this podcast as an opportunity to encourage many of you out there with amazing ideas and a thirst to do something more meaningful with our lives. I know for me that was certainly the case when I was doing the corporate thing back in New York. I left the private sector to work for a large international development non-profit, and while the mission was incredible, I was pretty disappointed by how slow and inefficient the non-profit structure was. It was not disruptive enough for me.

I decided to leave it all behind and move to Bali in order to explore this idea of how to really change the world and I’ve been doing that for the past year and a half. I built a virtual business consulting practice for clients all over the world and through this work, I’ve been quickly learning what works and what could be done better.

But one thing is clear – you need to shake the tree and cause a disruption. You need to piss some people off along the way and make others feel like you’re a heretic. If you don’t do that, you’re not going far enough.

So that’s what we’ll be doing. Me, in Bali, interviewing heretics from around the world and getting their stories to each of you.

And on that note, I ask each of you, with all my heart, to take some time to listen to an episode of your choice and leave a five star review (because I know you’ll love what you hear!). Here’s a little secret. The more 5-star reviews Cause An Effekt receives, the better iTunes will rank us. Which means more people will hear it and the more disruptions we can inspire!

And once you’ve done that, sign up for our mailing list where you’ll get detailed show notes of each episode delivered to your inbox each week. We’ll include information like links to the books mentioned in an episode and other helpful information to keep you inspired and informed.

But whatever you do, just keep up the great work. We need you and your heresy.
