Where we’ve spent most of our time in the details over the last four chapters, we now zoom out once more. God’s redemptive power was powerfully at work in this small family, in this small town, in this small story. Ruth and Boaz marry and have a child, Naomi has a grandchild, Naomi and Ruth are safe and provided for, happiness and joy has been restored. However, God’s redemptive restoration extends further than any of us could imagine, and this is what we see here. The book ends with a brief but impactful genealogy which places Ruth and Boaz in the family line of King David, and we know from the gospels, this line extends to the birth of Jesus. Suddenly this story has got a lot bigger! In these very ordinary events, through unexpected people, God was working his purposes out, deeply involved in every inch of their story. What about us, where do we need greater faith and trust that this God of redemption is working his purposes out in our lives, in our church, in our families?
