The devil on the ground.

0:41

The Binge.

0:58

It's time for Mac and me to leave the island.

1:01

Our next stop is Dusseldorf, where Helga

1:03

grew up and still lives for half of the year. We've

1:07

got meetings arranged with several people in and around

1:09

the city, and we're hoping they can shed

1:11

some much-needed light on Helga's life and

1:14

crimes. To really

1:16

bring him into focus.

1:19

As I pack to leave Helga's borrowed home, I

1:21

feel like I'm starting to get a handle on the guy. But

1:24

that at any moment, the handle

1:26

could break. At times he seems

1:29

utterly transparent. A hustler constantly

1:31

hustling everybody, myself included.

1:34

Then there are the flashes of sincerity. For

1:37

now, I'm feeling optimistic about the next

1:39

leg of our trip. One of the people we're due

1:41

to meet was the lead prosecutor in

1:43

Helga's trial. Helga

1:47

drives us to the airport in the rented Peugeot. Simone

1:50

rides Shotgun. Helga plays

1:52

some of his favorite songs by his favorite musicians.

1:55

Pink Floyd, Adele, Leonard Cohen.

1:58

He cranks the volume for the ringing guitar.

1:59

of shine on you crazy diamonds.

2:03

On the other side of the car's window, the burnt

2:05

toast of the volcanic rock life path. The

2:07

vast sky is impossibly

2:10

blue. Soon,

2:12

Helga will return to Germany, move

2:15

into another loaner home from April to October,

2:18

before heading back to Lanzarote. This

2:21

one on the former pig farm in Karsk, where

2:23

Culture Without Borders has rebuilt a dilapidated

2:25

farmhouse into its HQ. During

2:28

our last hours on the island, Helga's been busy

2:31

making sure we will visit Culture Without Borders

2:33

and sending us contact info for people he

2:36

thinks we should speak with to better understand

2:38

him. He can't resist

2:40

putting his thumb on the scale of our story.

2:44

And

2:44

of course, Helga has plans.

2:48

Deals he can't tell us about yet. Now

2:51

we're arriving at the airport. It's

2:53

time to say goodbye. But I have

2:56

a feeling this is far from the last

2:58

time we'll speak with Helga. And

3:11

then they're gone.

3:13

Mack and I immediately start to process

3:15

the Helga experience. He really doesn't

3:17

live like a guy who's earning 1200 euro a month. I

3:22

wonder how many people come to town and buy him

3:26

fancy dinner and stuff. Selena.

3:29

I mean, we are, we did. We are

3:31

the suckers who did.

4:12

fall asleep, your brain suddenly won't stop talking?

4:15

Do your thoughts start racing right before bed

4:17

or at other inopportune moments?

4:19

It turns out, one great way to make those racing

4:26

your negative thought cycles and find some mental and

6:15

After Bertolt died, Helga's life went

6:17

on just fine.

6:19

By then he'd set up a new fund with a prominent

6:21

bank called Berenberg.

6:23

The plan was to raise 50 million euros from investors

6:26

to buy some 200 paintings and sculptures

6:29

with the idea that everything would

6:31

go up in value and everyone would get

6:33

rich.

6:34

To help with acquisitions, Helga hired

6:37

a former museum director named Thomas

6:39

Kelline.

6:42

At the time, Helga felt that he'd

6:45

gotten away with it. The secrets

6:47

and lies of his fraudulent invoices had died

6:49

with Bertolt Albrecht, and it seemed

6:51

that his widow, Babette, was none

6:53

the wiser. A

6:56

different kind of person might have ended the scheme

6:58

there, satisfied with the millions

7:00

they'd managed to steal. But

7:02

as Mack and I learned while we stayed with him, Helga

7:05

can't help being anything but himself.

7:08

He wanted more.

7:10

And at Berenberg, Helga had access

7:12

to new clients. Emboldened,

7:15

Helga tried his collages again, this

7:18

time with pharmaceutical mogul Christian Behringer,

7:21

who was looking to build a collection. Now,

7:24

however, things were different.

7:27

Because now, Helga wasn't the only person

7:29

with access to the transaction records. Thomas

7:32

Kelline can see them as well. Kelline

7:35

and the bank, Berenberg, were partners

7:38

in this larger art venture. Working

7:40

with a financial institution meant that there were people

7:42

Helga was accountable to, people

7:44

he didn't know very well. Helga

7:47

believed he'd bought Kelline's silence by securing

7:49

him a six-figure signing bonus. But

7:53

in December of 2012, Kelline noticed

7:55

that, quote, something wasn't right with

7:57

the transactions Berenberg was facilitating for the

7:59

financial system. pharmaceutical mogul. Helga

8:02

had been charging premiums that Kellogg quote

8:04

couldn't support he later testified.

8:07

After noting three unusual

8:09

transactions conducted between 2012 and early 2013, Kellogg went

8:11

to the bank and informed them of

8:15

exactly what Helga was up to. So

8:18

I found one day

8:20

Kellogg and I said, Kellogg, why

8:23

you made this stupid

8:25

thing.

8:27

Why you did not speak with me? You got

8:30

the money. I split with you the money

8:32

we took from Berlinger.

8:34

You got 150,000, the other partner

8:38

got 105,000 and my company

8:40

got 150,000 and the rest was cost.

8:42

He said, yeah, you know, I think

8:45

it is good for you that you are not your

8:48

life, full-life crime

8:50

criminal. I said, okay,

8:52

thank you very much. Today,

8:55

Kellogg is the top art consultant for the private

8:57

Swiss bank, Burgos. According

9:00

to the bank's website, he looks after international

9:02

collectors, analyzes trends on the art

9:04

market and advises on strategic

9:07

issues.

9:09

We sent several emails and

9:11

made many calls to try and reach Kellogg.

9:14

We didn't receive any response.

9:16

So in the spring, after

9:18

hearing he was going to be at the prestigious

9:20

Frees Art Fair in Manhattan, Mack

9:23

and I tried to find him there. We

9:26

wandered several floors of the coldly

9:28

glamorous Midtown spot hosting this year's fair,

9:31

but no one had heard of either Kellogg

9:33

or Burgos bank. Finally,

9:37

we found our way to the Deutsche Bank Wealth Management

9:39

Lounge on the mezzanine level, which

9:42

was as easy as finding the seventh and a half

9:44

floor in being John Malkovich. That

9:47

is not easy at all. We

9:50

figured if anyone knew where to find Kellogg, it would

9:52

be in a wealth management lounge. A

9:55

Deutsche Bank rep stopped us as we tried

9:57

to enter the room.

9:59

What is it

10:00

you're wanting to do? Okay, so we were looking

10:03

for a very specific banker. Okay. His

10:05

name is Thomas Kelline. He works for Burgos.

10:07

But we were like, oh, there don't seem to be

10:09

any other bank thing here. They

10:13

weren't on the map, so we thought maybe

10:15

Burgos... Did a thing with Deutsche Bank.

10:18

Yeah. No. Not that. I

10:20

mean, it's nothing we're aware of. Okay. And, yeah.

10:23

Have you heard of Burgos? I haven't, no.

10:25

No. No. It seems no one. Do

10:28

they exist? We figured wrong.

10:30

Later that afternoon, Kelline replied to our last-ditch

10:33

email to say he had been at Frees one

10:36

day earlier. And

10:38

to say good luck with our story.

10:41

After Kelline revealed Helga's fraud, Helga

10:43

says he met with Behringer and returned

10:45

the money he'd skimmed from the sale. A

10:48

story in Art News seems to confirm that

10:50

was more or less the case, reporting

10:52

that the quote 1.8 million euro

10:54

dispute between Behringer and Aachenbach was

10:56

later solved by Behringberg Art Consulting

10:59

in an out-of-court settlement. As

11:02

far as Helga knew, at that point, the

11:04

matter was resolved.

11:07

For a while, it seemed like none of Helga's

11:09

shady maneuvering did anything to slow his

11:11

career. Near the end of 2013,

11:14

he was hired to bring art to the seven-building

11:16

complex in Brazil that was housing Germany's 2014

11:19

World Cup soccer team. He

11:21

called on his friend Klaus Fühtinger, an

11:23

artist Helga had met as a young man at the Düsseldorf

11:25

Art Academy, to design lamps for

11:28

the bar area. The lamps depicted

11:30

German soccer stars of the past. Fühtinger

11:33

ended up helping construct the bar himself. I

11:35

did it with my brother. My brother was

11:38

the IT man. And we

11:40

built it together, and some Indians were helping

11:42

us. And I think

11:44

we built about two months, the

11:47

whole thing. So in this case,

11:50

I built the bar, I chose

11:53

the furniture, everything. Whatever

11:57

Fühtinger did, it seemed to help the soccer

11:59

teams' memory.

11:59

Mojo.

12:01

That year, Germany crushed Brazil 7-1

12:04

in a semi-final match on their way to winning the

12:06

World Cup title.

12:07

The Brazilians are in disbelief.

12:10

They are stunned. They have come

12:12

here for a sombre and they have

12:14

been totally roped back on

12:17

their hands by the longest-manable

12:19

Germans.

12:20

Helga, meanwhile, was not as

12:23

lucky. While the Brazil

12:25

project was coming together, bank executives

12:27

familiar with Helga's Behringer deal were in

12:29

touch with Babette Albrecht's lawyer,

12:32

Dr. Andreas Erban. Babette

12:34

and her lawyer began digging through Bertolt's records,

12:37

paying special attention to the collaged

12:39

invoices. Helga says his phone

12:41

was tapped by the police. A

12:43

case was being built against him.

12:47

While Klaus was constructing the bar, Helga

12:49

flew to Brazil to see how everything was progressing.

12:52

And it was my checkup flight to

12:55

see if everything is fine, because a few

12:57

days later the championship started.

13:00

And so we were in

13:02

a kind of celebration atmosphere.

13:05

There it was a good time and very

13:08

nice and everything. From

13:10

there, Helga said he traveled to Washington,

13:12

D.C. to attend a friend's 60th birthday

13:15

party. He met Dorothy there, and

13:17

the two of them flew first class overnight back

13:19

to Dusseldorf, arriving on June 10,

13:23

2014, at 7.30 in the morning. Stepping

13:25

off the plane,

13:26

Helga knew immediately that

13:29

something was not right. There were two

13:32

tall guys, very

13:34

sympathetic, good looking, very

13:36

sporty, looking at me and said, are

13:38

you Mr. Ahama? I said, yes, I'm Mr. Ahama. Ahama,

13:42

would you come and come to the side, we

13:44

have something for you. And

13:46

I said, what do you have? Yeah,

13:48

I have here. I don't know the word in

13:50

English, but we have a paper that means

13:52

you are arrested.

13:54

If Helga was surprised, Dorothy

13:56

was blindsided. Until

13:59

this moment, she had no idea her

14:01

husband was a wanted man.

14:03

And she was shocked, of

14:05

course. She said what happened. I

14:07

said, yeah, something stupid. They

14:10

think I took too much money from Berthold

14:12

and... So you said that

14:14

then? I said, they

14:17

think, yeah, that was written. I

14:19

could read it, you know? And

14:23

I said, but don't be

14:25

afraid, because there's no

14:28

criminal act, because

14:31

he got from me this security

14:34

of bringing the paintings back.

14:35

What Helga means here is that he was under

14:38

the impression that any possible legal

14:40

exposure would be mitigated by the fact that he

14:42

had offered Berthold the 4% buyback clause. So

14:46

even as he was being arrested at the airport, Helga

14:49

believed that everything would be straightened out soon

14:51

enough. So I found this lawyer. From

14:53

the airport? Yes. And I

14:56

said, listen, we are sticking

14:58

here, and can

15:00

you help me? And she said, yes,

15:03

sure, we go to Essen.

15:06

Helga and Dorothy drove with the two detectives

15:08

to Essen. Getting there wasn't

15:11

easy. A massive storm was coming

15:13

in. All trees were, not all,

15:15

but a number of trees were on the streets. And

15:18

I was thinking, oh, that's my life. So

15:22

it was exactly how I was feeling

15:24

at this moment. Because of the storm, they

15:26

couldn't use the highways. A trip

15:28

that normally takes about 20 minutes lasted

15:31

four and a half hours. In

15:34

Essen, Helga was taken into a small

15:36

room in the police headquarters.

15:39

He and his lawyer met with a judge and a

15:41

state prosecutor.

15:43

The prosecutor laid out the case, claiming

15:45

that Helga had stolen between 60 and 120 million

15:49

euros from Bertolt Albrecht. That

15:52

number included much of the art and some of the cars,

15:55

Bentley's Bugatti's Ferraris.

15:57

I said, are you crazy? And you know

15:59

that we offered Mrs.

16:02

Albrich to buy everything back.

16:05

And he said, yeah,

16:06

you might have done it, but

16:09

we are not sure if this all is correct

16:11

and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. At this point, Helga's

16:13

lawyers began negotiating with the judge about

16:15

how much the state's claim should be and

16:17

how Helga might be able to pay it back. While

16:21

Helga didn't have a ton of cash on hand, he

16:23

once told me that for every one million

16:25

he made, he tended to spend another three

16:27

million. He did have assets

16:30

in the houses and cars and some 2,300

16:32

art pieces in his own collection. As

16:35

the night wore on, Helga couldn't keep his

16:38

thoughts straight. Everything goes through

16:40

your head in those

16:42

months. You have thousands of points,

16:44

of course, my children, of course,

16:47

the doors here, of course, the company, the

16:49

people working for me. Everything

16:51

came down. So it's a panic

16:54

zone, you know, it's a very special thinking.

16:57

Finally, the judge determined

17:00

that Helga would be a free risk and ordered

17:02

him kept in jail until the trial began.

17:05

You have panic

17:05

and you think it's not

17:07

possible. You destroy everything

17:09

now. And then you have also

17:12

this hope that the lawyer

17:14

is right. So it

17:16

was a really mixture of emotions.

17:19

And then it gets

17:22

real. Helga was first put in a temporary

17:24

cell. So there was a... There's gonna be some

17:26

spiciness. Like, why don't you and Kimmy

17:28

look at the line? Like, why isn't Ben Savage here? Why don't you get along?

17:31

But when they brought it up here,

17:32

what's her name, Joe Marie Peyton, just goes, we

17:35

miss him so much. He's dealt with a lot in his life.

17:37

We wish he could be here, but he's so special. I

17:39

was like, it's funny that it seems like they were trying

17:41

to bait

17:42

these people into hating Jaleel. And

17:45

they were like, nope, it's nothing but love. We love

17:47

Urkel. Sorry, bye.

17:49

And guess who took the bait? Danielle Fischl.

17:51

She said, I'm not voting for Ben for Congress,

17:53

California 30, Congress CA 30,

17:56

is that representative? Oh, Congress. He wants

17:58

to be Congress.

17:59

Congress.

17:59

You know what his slogan is?

18:02

What?

18:03

Together we can do better. It's like as long

18:05

as it's not what my boy meets world fam.

18:08

I'm sorry, your tagline should be

18:10

Ben meets vote. You know, like, come

18:12

on. Ha ha ha ha.

18:14

Remember he was running for like city

18:16

council in West Hollywood and posing with all those drag

18:18

queens and he was like, it's me. He's like,

18:20

I support gay. Yeah. Well,

18:24

guess what he's doing now? He's like posing with cops

18:26

being like, never forget. He's

18:29

kind of he's kind of going a different

18:31

route now. He

18:34

said, never forget to vote for me.

18:36

Wink, wink. OK, bye. This

18:39

all caps is definitely like a Timmy question. I

18:42

appreciate the prompt. It's me. Oh,

18:44

you wrote that all caps. I always think all caps is

18:46

Timmy. Oh, Timmy always puts Timmy with italics.

18:48

Yeah, I'm all caps. Us Weekly

18:50

DMed 19 male celebs to see how often

18:52

they think of the Roman Empire. And it's shocking. My

18:54

first reaction to this was, oh,

18:58

horrible content.

18:59

You don't like it. But do you get it?

19:01

Yeah, of course I get it. You get what it is? No, I

19:03

get the Roman Empire meme. I just thought it was dumb.

19:06

OK, how do you feel about Us Weekly doing

19:08

a meme?

19:08

I was ready to hate it. I said memes

19:10

don't belong in Us Weekly. And then I read

19:13

it and I was like, it's actual reporting. It's journalism.

19:15

Memes belong in Us Weekly.

19:16

What I love about this and like

19:19

Us Weekly, tell us if we're wrong.

19:21

You know, I feel like maybe a younger person

19:23

in the office was inspired

19:25

to pitch something slightly outside of the box,

19:28

outside of the norm and said, wouldn't

19:30

it be funny if we just DM'd men,

19:32

celebrity men, and asked what they thought about the Roman

19:34

Empire? For those of you who aren't in

19:36

hell, what's happening on Twitter right now or like

19:39

on TikTok or I don't even know where it's originated is

19:41

that there's a joke that men are obsessed

19:43

with the Roman Empire. Do you feel this

19:46

way? Are you obsessed with the Roman Empire? Not at all.

19:48

OK. No, I'm not.

19:50

Well, there is a catch to this that certain

19:52

types of men are not involved in this.

19:55

I can look at the Roman Empire and say, that's interesting. I

19:57

can look at an aqueduct and say, I'm glad you invented that.

19:59

No, like how often are you thinking about

20:02

the Roman Empire? Apparently a certain type of

20:04

man is thinking about it constantly They

20:06

said let's do a fun gag and

20:08

they use their us weekly Twitter privilege to DM

20:11

some

20:12

This is what I love. Yeah,

20:14

and they do you like the funniest list of celebs

20:16

because it's very much like It's Friends

20:18

of the pod, right? It's like Friends of the magazine.

20:20

It's people like who were bachelor contestants, you

20:22

know It's a Jonathan Bennett. It's very

20:24

BFFs. We slide into their dams and they respond

20:27

immediately, you know We're not people who us we please

20:29

into yeah, and it's here's

20:32

my favorites. I put in here, but they're all pretty

20:34

good it said we DM 19 male celebs and

20:37

Most of them are pretty funny or at least I think

20:39

like worth reading I'll

20:42

read the ones I put in here Matt James

20:44

Every day except for Sunday when it's

20:46

closed. That's when I think about it the most

20:48

James responded Some of them responded

20:51

with jokes Some of them explicitly said they

20:53

were jokes some of them us weekly interpreted

20:55

a jokes and it editorialized them as

20:57

jokes Here's one from Jesse Palmer. The

20:59

bachelor nation host told us he

21:01

thinks about the Roman Empire at least once a week

21:04

quote Just last night I was marveling

21:06

at a how ingenious of an invention the aqueduct

21:08

was he jokingly added and I was

21:10

sort of like How do you know that was jokingly

21:13

because some of these are very serious.

21:15

I think they're kind of fun I mean you can tell

21:17

first of all who's online Mm-hmm and

21:19

who already knew about the meme and who's kind of like that's

21:22

random like Mike Johnson said while in these are

21:24

all bachelor People while in Europe two weeks ago

21:26

legit the most random Johnson

21:28

said before noting he wished that he had come up with a funnier

21:31

answer No, he was just answering like that's pretty random Sean

21:33

Booth said actually thought about last week when I was planning

21:35

a workout for my gym That is an honest and true

21:38

answer one of the worst answers

21:40

comes from a property brother who said

21:42

not often at all The property brother

21:44

host said alongside a link to a tick

21:47

tock video of himself answering the same

21:49

question sarcastically meaning

21:51

he'd already Engaged

21:53

with with the content

21:54

online Humiliating

21:56

and he said please see my tech talk for my

21:58

full statement

21:59

You said please, Lincoln, share. Thank you.

22:02

The Scott brothers? They're so into

22:04

content. They're really on top of it. They're so into TikTok and

22:06

meals. They're always, they're like, they're like,

22:08

oh,

22:08

is there a meme about the Roman Empire and how men

22:10

love it? We must engage?

22:13

They engage with every meme.

22:15

Okay, here's a good one. This is a good one.

22:18

Mm hmm.

22:18

I don't know who this person is, Jeremy Lewis. Who is that? He

22:21

has a podcast called Wild Till Nine.

22:22

Very like internet culture.

22:24

Okay, here's a very authentic answer

22:26

as to what I think the meme is actually referring

22:28

to. Considering they essentially invented,

22:31

engineered, and commercialized running water, I dare

22:33

say I don't think about them enough. Not

22:35

to mention at least one of those aqueducts built in

22:37

the first century is still functioning today. I

22:40

think that's what the meme literally is. Like

22:43

a girlfriend listening to a boyfriend be

22:45

like, let's talk about aqueducts

22:47

or do you know about the aqueducts? What's that

22:49

podcast that's like the history

22:52

one that's like 12 hours long, each episode's like 12

22:54

hours long and some guy just like tells you history. I

22:57

feel

22:57

like you know about this. No,

22:59

because I hate podcasts that are just people reading a history

23:01

book. It's like absolutely not. You're not going to editorialize

23:03

it. As opposed to reading a Wikipedia entry

23:06

like we do. It's like you think about like celebrity

23:08

memoir book club. It's like they're reading the celebrity memoir.

23:10

They want you to engage with it too. They're adding funny

23:13

context or adding humor. The ones that are just like,

23:15

I read this book on Queen Elizabeth and now I'm just going to tell

23:17

you everything that was in the book. I think that that's so annoying.

23:20

It's like just read me the fucking audio book.

23:22

So I think what we should end on

23:24

for these questions is what I inferred

23:26

why I asked you about you knowing about the

23:28

Roman Empire, which is they asked out

23:31

of all of the men they asked who were gay. OK,

23:33

one Chris Olsen, the tick

23:35

tocker to Mean Girls Jonathan

23:37

Bennett, who the tick tocker flash you, Megan,

23:39

his best friend,

23:40

always around. OK, these two are

23:43

always available. Chris Olsen said, is

23:45

that a Nicki Minaj thing?

23:47

Roman, which is funny.

23:48

Me when asked anything, is

23:50

that a Nicki Minaj thing? And

23:52

Jonathan who said, I don't think that

23:54

I do.

23:55

Laugh, cry, face.

23:56

I think that he didn't know about the

23:58

meme. I truly think he didn't know. about the meme and would

24:00

just like, LOL, Us Weekly's being funny.

24:02

And I think that that's beautiful.

24:06

I do too. Okay. How

24:08

much of this, David? Whether

25:39

How much of

25:41

this, David?

25:42

What do we think about the friendship between

25:44

Jen Shaw and Elizabeth Holmes in prison?

25:45

I mean, I think Jen Shaw made a beeline.

25:48

I think she knew that woman was going to be there coming in.

25:51

The question really is who's more dangerous. And I think

25:53

Jen Shaw said, there's a more dangerous

25:55

woman than me in here when it comes to... Who's

25:57

more dangerous? Elizabeth Holmes by a factor of like a heart.

25:59

For

26:01

sure. And Jen Shaw said, I'm coming for that woman.

26:03

Because you know Elizabeth Holmes didn't know about Jen

26:05

Shaw, but Jen Shaw had a lot

26:07

of time

26:08

to do reading about Elizabeth Holmes. They're

26:11

friends.

26:12

They're both rehabilitating and have bonded over

26:14

being on the journey of positive change. The

26:17

situations brought them together and they have a good

26:19

understanding

26:19

of one another. They're getting through it together. This

26:22

is Jen's rep, which I love. Just

26:24

being totally open about it. I think setting the

26:26

table for some piece of

26:28

content, some piece of something,

26:30

some piece of cursed, wretched

26:33

entrepreneurial activity to come out of these two.

26:36

I know that they're planning

26:38

for something to happen between Jen Shaw

26:40

and Elizabeth Holmes.

26:41

My thing is, although

26:43

I learned that Dancing with the Stars

26:46

is a WGA

26:46

production and should not be going

26:48

back to production.

26:50

Yeah, it sure is. Did you know that? Uh-uh.

26:53

Uh-huh. Wow, I didn't know it was

26:55

a WGA production.

26:56

Since I just learned that I'm not in support

26:58

of this season, but I am in support, I do think these

27:00

women have a very big future ahead of them on

27:02

Dancing with the Stars. Because as we know,

27:05

that category of felon was

27:07

missing.

27:08

Oh my God. From the lineup. No,

27:10

you're right. You're right.

27:12

I didn't realize DWTS was

27:14

WGA. That's so fucking cool. Sure

27:15

is. Sure is.

27:17

They don't want you to know that, but they are. They

27:19

didn't know that. So, Jen Shaw

27:21

and Elizabeth Holmes, Jen gets all

27:23

the ladies together and they rally behind her while

27:25

she teaches them fitness moves. And Elizabeth has

27:27

been there right along with them. My

27:31

God.

27:31

Moving on. A lot of relationship

27:34

news this week. So much.

27:36

And a lot of it is actually pretty surprising.

27:38

Number

27:39

one, Deanna Taylor and Imane Schumpfert

27:41

broke up. They seemed like one of the perfect couples.

27:44

I was very shocked.

27:45

I gasped. I literally

27:47

gasped because they had a reality

27:49

show together. First of all, the

27:52

divorce thing has been crazy recently. Doesn't it feel like everybody's

27:54

getting divorced? That's what it feels like. It's

27:56

one after the other. I keep retweeting

27:58

like, no. I just I feel

28:00

very I feel very confused

28:03

like it's something in retrograde is something happening

28:05

What's

28:05

fighting about their thoughts about unions you

28:08

got a pro union at the Union in every

28:10

relationship?

28:11

Yeah, maybe the house is split.

28:13

She wrote Not too much on

28:15

my bestie in all fairness and Mon and I

28:17

are separated have been for a while to be 1000% clear

28:22

infidelity in doesn't quotes Infidelity

28:24

ain't one of the reasons for our departure

28:27

We are still the best of friends great business

28:29

partners and one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting

28:32

our two beautiful children Most importantly

28:35

we are family in the ten years together seven

28:37

years married. We ain't ever played about that We

28:40

just keep y'all asses in the group chat law Which is the

28:42

reason we've been able to sinfully and peacefully separate

28:44

without all of the outside noise The only

28:46

reason I'm even sharing this as part of the chat

28:49

is because the narratives are getting a lot of hand and

28:51

it's unfair To all parties involved. I hope

28:53

this provided some clarity for y'all Okay,

28:56

auntie taken y'all back out of the chat Bye

28:58

bye What I think is interesting

29:01

about this and the only reason I kind of believe

29:03

this to be mostly true Is that

29:06

Tana Taylor famously says whatever she wants

29:08

and has like actually been very alienating

29:11

to her career that she kind of says Whatever she

29:13

wants like I think she gets in trouble a lot for

29:15

that I really admire that and

29:17

I think she's really talented But I do think

29:20

she kind of is very opinionated and kind of doesn't

29:22

hold back I don't think that

29:24

she would have not said Something

29:27

if something had happened,

29:29

right? Oh, yeah. I see what you're saying now. Yeah. Yeah,

29:31

you mean I don't think I don't think she would

29:33

Have held back is my point. She's

29:36

an outspoken person if she had been betrayed

29:38

in some way Then I

29:41

think she would have said something like I just don't

29:43

I don't see her That's her whole

29:44

thing. But this I think is specifically

29:46

because

29:48

Last week there was a rumor that

29:50

Iman was cheating on her because he

29:52

was caught with some other woman in some

29:55

sort of public place and When

29:57

that happens and you're married that turns into

30:00

to cheating allegations, cheating allegations.

30:02

So because a mom was getting specific cheating allegations

30:04

in fidelity, that's why that's in quotes in her statement.

30:07

I think that's why she was like, okay,

30:09

we should take something. Because it

30:11

seems like they sort of settled into many months of

30:13

being separated without anyone knowing. And then the

30:15

moment there was a bump on the road, they were like, okay,

30:18

now's as good a time as any.

30:19

Right, and also cheating allegations

30:21

means that somebody knows that you're broken up and wants

30:23

to announce it and say, and give

30:26

a reason or any reason why. So she was like,

30:28

yeah. She was kind of like, if

30:30

you know, you knew, you know?

30:33

It's important to set the scene. I

30:35

think we did a bad job of it. The photo that they posted

30:37

alongside this separation announcement was

30:40

of the two of them in a costume as Wayne and Garth

30:42

from Wayne's World. So like, it's

30:44

a very lighthearted, playful announcement

30:46

to match the tone of the actual caption.

30:49

They were charming. Like they were together when he won

30:51

Dancing with the Stars and he win, did he win? I already forgot.

30:54

He won. Remember when he cut the cord

30:56

with like his air pod cord?

31:00

He cut the umbilical cord with his air

31:02

pods? Not his air pods, his

31:04

wired headphones? He cut it with the

31:06

headphone cord. He like went like, yeah.

31:08

What is next on here?

31:11

This is

31:11

really nuts. Just

31:14

read the headline. Savannah Chrisley

31:16

is dating Robert Shriver, ex-football

31:18

player who survived Beauty Queen Murder

31:20

Plot exclusive. Savannah Chrisley

31:22

is one of the daughters of the Chrisleys, obviously, who

31:25

just got their jail sentence

31:28

a little bit reduced. Did you see

31:30

that? I did. So they are

31:31

gonna be out soon. This is one of their daughters who also

31:33

has like a bunch of podcasts and is like, was

31:36

on the show and blah, blah, blah, and is known for

31:38

that.

31:38

And just broke up with her long-term boyfriend,

31:41

her fiance, they bring it up for a long time.

31:43

Right, so guess who she's dating?

31:45

She is dating a like 2020 star, and

31:48

I mean just somebody who would be on 2020, whose

31:51

name is Robert Shriver, ex-wife

31:54

whose name is Lindsay, tried

31:56

to murder him, okay?

31:58

She tried to murder him.

31:59

The former beauty pageant queen and

32:02

Auburn University cheerleader from Thomasville, Georgia,

32:04

and her alleged boyfriend were accused of plotting

32:06

to kill Robert with an alleged hit

32:09

man. Him men are never real, girly.

32:11

They're always cops. Yeah.

32:14

Per the Bahamas court news, who reported

32:17

the story on July 28th, the trio were arrested

32:19

by police in the Bahamas, where

32:21

the former married couple shared a home. Law

32:23

enforcement made the arrest after discovering a chain

32:26

of WhatsApp messages owned by Facebook,

32:28

not very encrypted. Why would you use those? That

32:31

laid out the- I mean, you signal, you

32:33

dumbass, that laid out the plot

32:34

to kill

32:35

Robert while investigating a

32:37

July 16th break-in at Grabber's

32:40

Bar and Grill on Guana. The phone-contained

32:43

messages belonged to someone suspected of

32:45

the break-in. On July 16th, 2023,

32:48

the Atabaco, the defendants,

32:50

while being together, did with a common purpose

32:53

agree to commit an offense, namely the murder

32:55

of Robert

32:55

Shriver. Okay? And now,

32:58

that man, who was not murdered by

33:00

a hit man because his ex-wife was caught by

33:02

the police, WhatsApping a hit man or

33:04

whatever, is dating

33:06

Savannah Chrisley. I'm sorry. The

33:08

plan was concocted

33:11

two months ago.

33:13

They tried to kill him, they got caught, and

33:15

he said, I gotta find someone new, and he found a

33:17

Chrisley.

33:18

He literally rebounded

33:21

two months after almost being

33:22

murdered by his ex-wife. With a

33:24

Chrisley. With a Chrisley.

33:25

How do you even meet a Chrisley? This is so

33:28

crazy.

33:29

He works for an insurance company because people would like everything

33:31

to know about this man. Who was Savannah Chrisley's

33:34

boyfriend all about Robert Shriver? Do you want to hear the things?

33:36

Yeah, duh. Number

33:39

one, he works for an insurance company. Number

33:41

two, he played football at Auburn University. Number

33:44

three, he married Lindsay Shiver in 2007. Number

33:47

four, he survived an alleged murder for a higher

33:49

bond. Number five,

33:52

he's a dad. Number

33:54

six, he and Savannah were first linked

33:56

in September, 2023. When it was revealed that

33:58

his ex-wife was a hit man,

33:59

Call the call. I

34:02

can't.

34:02

And that's literally what she did. She

34:05

said this on Vile Files. Nick

34:07

Viles, Vile Files. I'm gonna play the

34:09

clip, but she goes, this guy that I'm talking

34:11

to, his wife just tried to kill him. It

34:14

was a thing. He's a normal person, and I love

34:16

it.

34:18

His wife tried to kill him. He's a normal

34:20

person. I love it. That's the funniest thing ever said

34:22

on any podcast. He's a normal person,

34:24

and I love it. Is there a clip somewhere? Or you

34:27

have to find it, I guess. Anyway, your current

34:29

boyfriend is a survivor of

34:31

a murder attempt?

34:32

It was a thing. Who is attempting to kill who?

34:35

I don't know. I don't know. So

34:36

he's a normie. He's a normal

34:38

person.

34:39

And I love it.

34:41

I am obsessed with

34:44

this.

34:45

And People magazine, the same place that's reporting

34:47

this, only on July 31st, only a month

34:50

ago or so, had

34:52

Beauty Queen accused applying to kill ex-Auburn

34:54

football player husband to police find WhatsApp

34:57

message. Do you think Savannah Chrisley saw this headline?

34:59

It was like,

35:00

so you think he's single? So you're

35:02

saying he's single.

35:06

How did you meet him? Instagram!

35:08

Who slid? Me! But how did you find

35:10

him on Instagram? He's headline? Yeah! And you're like

35:13

that man. So you saw the headline. You're

35:15

like, wow, he's hot. I'll find him on Instagram and

35:17

say, hey-o. Yeah. Is

35:20

that

35:20

the potential? I mean... Incredible.

35:23

Incredible.

35:24

Here's a great new phrase for dating. Gigi

35:26

Hadid and music producer Cole Bennett quote, mesh

35:28

really well, colon, quote, moving

35:31

in a romantic direction. Gigi

35:33

Hadid is moving in a romantic direction. This is

35:35

in quotes with music producer Cole Bennett, a

35:37

source exclusively reveals in the new. That's

35:40

not a revelation. That's not a revelation.

35:42

What the fuck does moving

35:45

in a romantic direction

35:47

mean? The way that these people speak,

35:50

moving... This is a quote from an

35:52

insider, a person

35:55

I assume, maybe AI, maybe chat GPT. They've

35:57

been friends for years. They've been playing coins.

36:00

about their status, but they mesh really well together.

36:03

How do you find Bennett refreshing? And the feeling is

36:05

apparently mutual. He lights up around her, second

36:07

source tells us. I wonder if I put in chat

36:09

Bt, like use source length, like pretend

36:12

like you're

36:12

a source. Like, I'll do it. Hold on.

36:14

Do you think chat Bt could speak in first language?

36:17

What should the print be?

36:18

Yeah, have it open. That's gonna be, I think that's gonna be hard.

36:21

What should the print be?

36:23

Write a three

36:26

paragraph story in the style

36:30

of like an us weekly magazine

36:32

source.

36:35

In which two anonymous

36:38

insider sources claim

36:41

Gigi Hadid, is

36:43

dating someone, what's this guy's name? Is dating

36:45

someone named Cole, a music producer

36:48

named Cole. Here

36:55

we go. Exclusive Gigi Hadid

36:57

secret love affair with music producer Cole. Hollywood's

37:00

hottest supermodel Gigi Hadid is rumored to be igniting

37:02

sparks with none other than a talented music producer named

37:04

Cole. According to two anonymous insiders who claim

37:06

to have the inside scoop on this burgeoning romance. Our

37:09

sources have revealed that the stunning runway sensation

37:11

and the music night show have been enjoying a low profile

37:13

love affair that's been kept under wraps until now, sending

37:15

shockwaves through the entertainment wild. Here we go.

37:18

One source close to the situation spilled the beans saying, quote

37:20

Gigi and Cole have been seeing each other for a while now.

37:23

They've been keeping it low key, enjoying breakfast dinners

37:25

and cozy

37:25

nights in. It's clear that they have a genuine

37:27

connection. That is perfect.

37:30

That is perfect. Yes,

37:32

it's the same.

37:33

This is so spot off.

37:34

I mean, to be fair, chat GPT does

37:37

learn from what's out there.

37:38

Yeah, they do.

37:39

But it really is just showing this is what's out there.

37:41

Like it is confirming what we're saying, which is like they

37:43

all say the same shit and it means nothing.

37:45

The other insider added, quote,

37:47

it's refreshing to see Gigi with someone from

37:49

a different part of the industry. They share

37:52

a passion for creativity and

37:54

their chemistry is electric. Yes,

37:57

yes, yes. Yep. That's

38:00

exactly perfect. What's next?

38:02

Who else is dating someone? And Colbin, there's

38:05

a lot of research here. Thank you for Timmy for doing this.

38:07

He's a very, very prolific music video director.

38:09

Name and music video.

38:11

Like Juice WRLD,

38:13

you know? Oh, okay. No,

38:15

I'm seeing Jack Harlow. I'm

38:17

seeing the kid, LaRoy.

38:18

I'm seeing Juice WRLD. It's cool.

38:20

I'm seeing Trippy Redd. I'm seeing Lil Durk.

38:23

All right, okay. I'm seeing Lil Yachty.

38:25

So he seems cool. He

38:27

directed Blinkway 2's edging music video.

38:30

I don't even remember that song. All right. No

38:32

one does. No one does. Lyrical Lemonade

38:34

is his website, lyricallemonade.com.

38:36

Daisy Edgar Jones. What did

38:38

our GFF call Daisy Edgar Jones

38:40

a couple of weeks ago? I have to.

38:42

Daisy and the Six,

38:45

he called her Daisy and the Six

38:47

Jones Girl or something.

38:50

I sent the trailer for the bike riders. I

38:52

said, I love Jeff Nichols so much. Comer

38:54

appears to be a sleigh. Same for Austin

38:57

and Tom. Where did this movie come from? This

38:59

looks so good. Our GFF goes,

39:02

that's Jodie Comer? I really thought this

39:04

was a Daisy, Six, Lily, Edgar and the Jones

39:06

one. And I said, Lily, Edgar and the

39:08

Jones. Daisy, Six, Lily, Edgar and the Jones.

39:11

Meanwhile, Lily and Daisy are

39:13

both not in Daisy and the, like those are

39:15

not women in that show.

39:16

That's Jodie Comer? I really thought this was

39:18

a Daisy, Six, Lily, Edgar and the Jones one.

39:21

He just thinks all women with

39:23

brown hair and bangs look alike, which is on

39:25

him. He needs

39:26

to reassess. Anyway,

39:28

Daisy, Six, Lily, Edgar and the Jones is now

39:30

dating someone named Ben Seed, who

39:33

used to date Anya Taylor.

39:34

Anya Taylor Joy. Who's another Daisy,

39:36

Edgar and the Six Jones? Well, no, she's, Anya

39:39

Taylor Joy has a very distinct name. No, Anya

39:41

Taylor Joy. Her name is Anya Taylor Joy.

39:43

And we're talking about Daisy, Edgar Jones. And I have to

39:45

say, if you're just saying those names to me, I'm

39:48

not,

39:49

I'm sorry. If some publisher,

39:51

some children's book publisher made a Where's Waldo-esque

39:54

update, but it was Where's Anya, every good would be like,

39:56

founder, founder, founder, founder, founder,

39:58

founder, founder.

39:59

Yeah, big eyes. Listen,

40:02

this is so funny. So she's dating this guy named Ben

40:04

Seed, which is just a funny name. They're like,

40:06

just objectively like Ben Seed. Okay.

40:08

And the son wrote about it, and they

40:11

wrote about it in first person because

40:13

it's fun. I'm told Daisy

40:15

and Ben, who goes by the artist named Pip,

40:17

have been seeing each other for months and have been spotted

40:20

on a string of dates in East London, where they both

40:22

live. You're telling me a guy who goes by Pip lives

40:24

in East London? Shocking.

40:25

You're telling me a guy who goes by Pip lives

40:27

in East London and is dating a woman named Daisy?

40:29

There is a real spark, and they are excited about

40:32

finding each other. They've already met one

40:34

another's friends, and she's on cloud nine.

40:36

Another great source quote.

40:38

Great source quote.

40:40

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey are quietly

40:42

hanging out, according to a source.

40:44

This is an exclusive from The Messenger.

40:46

She's definitely a them, and he is like actually

40:49

vaguely a them,

40:49

him and his brother, For sure.

40:52

For sure he's a football them. There were all these articles

40:54

about them, and blah, blah, blah. I don't know which

40:56

one is which. There's a brother, there's

40:58

Jason and Travis, and they're both Kelsey.

41:01

I think he's a who in the Swift

41:03

universe. He's not the type of

41:05

guy that she typically dates.

41:07

No, no, I was gonna say, how does it feel

41:09

that we finally maybe entered Taylor Swift's

41:11

dating a sports person era?

41:14

That I think that's huge for the kind

41:16

of celebrity world. If she's indeed

41:19

dating a sports player, that's a big deal.

41:21

A sports star, a sports player, a sports

41:23

star.

41:24

Now that Taylor is at her most

41:27

aggressively capitalistic and money-making

41:29

era, where she's trying to squeeze as many pennies as she

41:31

can out of everything.

41:32

She's also in her most single out in

41:34

the town, I'm going to the club with Blake Lively

41:36

era, which is like, we didn't think we'd ever see that again.

41:38

It's very welcome to New York, Cornelia

41:40

Street. We didn't think we'd see it.

41:42

It's hard for me not to be cynical to this

41:44

sort of decision, because to me I'm like, I

41:46

see every decision that she's making as a financial

41:48

one, and as a very calculated one, where it's like,

41:51

okay, now she's smart. Now she's finally

41:53

expanding her empire. Like she's going to sports.

41:56

What's another audience I can attract? Oh,

41:58

you think she's trying to buy SPN?

41:59

the map alone II know what he's trying to find yeah

42:02

and I know I know they're for sale though the

42:06

oh I know oh I know you

42:08

know that ESPN what are they Lindsay

42:10

what are they gonna do with the I what are they I was gonna

42:12

buy so I was gonna buy ESPN but I

42:14

bought the Katy Perry discography instead

42:17

me waking up at the middle of the night being like

42:19

it's Tyler Perry gonna buy BET like oh

42:21

my god is he gonna do it who's gonna take ESPN

42:23

off of Disney's hands from the ringer and fuck I'm

42:26

Matt Bellany and this is the town

42:27

okay so Taylor Swift

42:29

is in her sports star era it's

42:32

giving a little bit glitz of getting a little glamour I

42:34

do think it's interesting if she dates this like big

42:37

personality sports guy that's

42:39

very different than her last you know she dated

42:42

like I'm gonna have a no one Daisy Edgar Jones actor

42:44

you know well

42:45

well she dated no between

42:47

the between Daisy Edgar Jones and Travis

42:50

Kelsey she dated Mattie Healy which was a whole problem

42:52

of course and she was like I think that was triggering for

42:54

I think she was like I can't date one of these guys

42:57

I can't say one of these guys

42:58

I got to date the opposite guy who

43:00

is like a very flashy

43:02

very public very front-facing

43:05

and media trained sports person

43:07

and not like alt

43:08

I do like this because Timmy said I

43:10

know you guys aren't paying attention this stuff

43:12

but sports season is back football oh my

43:14

god I need something sports

43:15

football season is back this is a specific

43:17

sport and just Jared

43:20

and the other

43:20

kind of traffickers and click

43:22

click traffic are going to hear it on the other traffickers

43:25

I mean like I mean

43:28

like web traffic no I know I know you're

43:30

going fucking crazy with the headlines

43:32

so then you're getting like who is Jimmy

43:35

Garoppolo's girlfriend who is Mack Jones

43:37

girlfriend I keep

43:40

calling him Kelsey Travis because that's like the name

43:42

of a normal country star not Travis Kelsey

43:45

like Travis Kelsey spelled K on a name

43:48

in case you're not a sports player

43:49

but whatever who is Dak

43:51

Prescott's wife

43:52

who is Jimmy Garoppolo's girlfriend

43:54

dating history and current girlfriend revealed including

43:57

an adult film star it's like like

43:59

it must be bad out here for publishers. They're trying so

44:01

hard to get clicks and attention. They're trying to get so hard

44:03

to get like Google visibility. It's such

44:06

a disaster. This reminds me of another

44:08

trend that I've noticed on specifically Just Jared and

44:10

I moved this up from the bottom because

44:12

I think it's a great

44:14

segue from Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift.

44:16

First

44:16

of all, we didn't finish that. Do you think they're actually dating or

44:18

do you think it's fake? I think they must be dating. I don't think that comes

44:20

out unless it's real. I think she dates and I think they've been on

44:22

dates.

44:23

Yeah,

44:25

that's perfect. What is dating? Like I

44:27

don't know are they gonna be in a relationship?

44:30

Maybe but do I think they're in

44:32

one? I don't know but do I think they've gone

44:34

out for sure? Yeah.

44:35

He's like a hot single guy who's

44:37

like made comments about wanting

44:39

to date her. She definitely slid in the DMs

44:42

or had Tree send him a telegram

44:44

or something. I hand-delivered that said like,

44:46

I'll fuck you. You know what I mean? Like sure. You

44:49

saw her at the VMAs. She's definitely

44:51

fucking a hot football player.

44:53

Definitely sent like

44:56

a big contract and was like fill out all these forms,

44:58

get it back to my lawyer by the end of the week and

45:00

then we can fuck somewhere TBD. And

45:02

let's do it before the VMA so I can be

45:05

like a happy bitch and she

45:07

was. I love

45:08

the

45:10

video

45:11

of her dancing and I saw something

45:13

where it's like I'd know that Clunchjaw anywhere or

45:16

something. So

45:21

the headline construction of these

45:23

football people, these sports people,

45:25

who is the girlfriend? He's dating

45:28

Anna Gore. Who is the girlfriend? He's dating Sarah Jane Ramos.

45:31

I'm just seeing a new construction that feels very

45:33

SEO tinged.

45:36

They ask and answer the question at the same time.

45:38

Typically you ask the question in the headline and then you

45:40

answer it in the body and you want the headline to entice

45:43

you to click. In this one it says, is

45:45

Peter Port single or married? Question mark.

45:48

Meet his husband Jacob Jules Villare.

45:50

Next one that I saw is Marcus Rosner

45:52

married?

45:53

Meet the Hallmark stars wife, Ali Kroker.

45:56

So I'm almost like why are they doing

45:58

this? Why are they asking and answering the question?

45:59

in the same space, I'm losing my

46:02

desire to click, but they must know something that

46:04

we don't.

46:05

Every time I see insane headline construction,

46:07

I think they must perform well, right?

46:09

I think they're just seeing people typing, is

46:11

Peter Port single or married?

46:12

Yeah, probably.

46:14

It's the snake eating its own tail thing

46:16

where it's like you optimize your

46:19

search results for Google SEO. Google

46:21

SEO starts using artificial intelligence

46:23

or machine learning

46:25

to add those suggested questions

46:27

and follow up to the bottom. Then people start clicking

46:30

those. Then people like just Jared realize

46:32

that those questions are fucking,

46:35

dark, ugly, whole

46:38

of shit. It was

46:40

nothing, it was dirty, and there

46:42

was a toilet inside, very,

46:45

very ugly, and it was no

46:47

light, you could not have daylight. And

46:49

then after three hours, somebody

46:52

came very rude, said, oh, come

46:54

with me. And there was another one,

46:56

so they took me in the car, in

46:59

a Volkswagen boost, covered, and

47:01

they brought me the prison. He was in

47:03

shock as he was processed into prison. And

47:06

there was a kind of system

47:09

where you come there, you

47:11

have your clothes, take off your clothes,

47:14

neck it, show us

47:16

your penis, you have to

47:18

show your open, your hooden,

47:22

you show turn

47:24

around, they look in your ass to

47:26

see if you have drugs inside. So

47:29

it's awful. And

47:32

then they said, here's your clothes

47:35

from the prison. I got the prison

47:37

clothes for a moment, dark blue gray,

47:40

and very big size,

47:44

I forget it. So it was really

47:46

terrible. And then they brought

47:48

me in a cell.

47:51

Germany's most famous art dealer, the

47:53

man who threw 400 person parties, who

47:55

was the life of the party, who for decades

47:58

lived for international gallows and glamor. The farmer was

48:01

now alone, completely

48:03

alone. Alone in a

48:05

jail cell, barely wide enough for a single

48:07

bed and a small desk. No

48:10

television, no radio. Alone

48:13

with his thoughts.

48:14

I was also thinking sometimes

48:16

to kill myself because

48:18

I was frightened of the future.

48:27

You're listening to Camellia from

48:29

Campside Media.

48:31

In late 2007, the

48:34

remains of a young woman from the Kaska

48:36

Nation were discovered in the Yukon

48:38

Woods.

48:39

I always think about, I

48:41

want to know what really happened. So

48:44

I travel north to try to understand

48:46

what happened and who was

48:48

involved. It's a pretty big risk

48:50

to come forward with the information that I have.

48:53

I'm David Rijan and this is Someone Knows Something,

48:56

Season 8, the Angel Carla

48:58

Case. Available now.

49:15

You're

49:19

listening to Camellia from Campside Media.

49:39

We're now, I

49:40

think, going in the

49:42

right direction. You are over

49:44

the speed limit. Shut up. It looks

49:46

like 31 kilometers to

49:48

go.

49:59

called Build Your Dream.

50:02

For me, it was love at first

50:05

acceleration. Ooh, baby.

50:06

Oh,

50:09

I want to go so fast.

50:12

Mac named our SUV Bertie. I

50:14

drove Bertie through Düsseldorf and onto the Autobahn,

50:17

headed for Essen. Today,

50:20

the weather's good, so it takes us about 20 minutes.

50:23

Düsseldorf is now a

50:25

nice, clean, and bougie place with

50:27

plenty of restaurants, bars, and galleries. Including

50:30

one owned by Helga's son, David Achaembach.

50:33

Klaus Futtinger told us that after the war,

50:36

the city was rebuilt into a kind of bohemian

50:38

paradise. A lot of buildings

50:40

were destroyed in the Second World War,

50:43

so it was a good place

50:45

to concentrate and think

50:48

about the essentials. On some social

50:51

hangouts like Rathen Gohof or

50:54

other interesting places,

50:56

there were also

50:57

the musicians and the artists

50:59

were out then.

51:01

The Art Academy, where Helga met Klaus,

51:03

Gerhard Richter, and many other artists

51:05

who would go on to have brilliant careers, was

51:08

an important place for the global art scene.

51:11

The art world was quite small at those

51:13

times, let's say in New York, at

51:15

Düsseldorf Cologne, and in

51:17

London. So the Art

51:19

Academy was kind of a light tower for

51:22

many artists and also

51:24

the teachers there. But of course,

51:26

Helga is a long way from those days

51:29

now. His downfall

51:31

began that morning when he arrived at the Düsseldorf

51:33

airport and was arrested. And

51:35

it accelerated on December 9, 2014, when

51:39

he entered the courtroom for the first time to

51:41

face charges of fraud and embezzlement.

51:44

The journalist Tobias Timm attended the trial

51:47

and described what Helga looked like that day in his book

51:49

Art and Crime. Timm

51:51

wrote that he was pale, almost reserved.

51:54

Helga had lost so much weight in prison that his fitted

51:57

suit now sagged on him. He

52:00

was joined by an unnamed codefendant, a

52:02

former insurance executive. They

52:05

faced three judges and two jurors who

52:07

sat at the front of the room.

52:10

The trial of one of Germany's biggest art

52:12

stars had captivated the country. And

52:15

on that first morning, the room was packed.

52:18

The media swarmed.

52:19

You couldn't avoid it. There

52:22

was so much coverage of this court

52:25

case in the media. You

52:26

wouldn't believe it. That's Markus Eisenbeis,

52:29

the head of the Van Ham auction house you heard from

52:31

in episode one. You know, we have something

52:34

like the Financial Times in Germany. It's

52:36

called the Hamdelslacht. And

52:38

there was this six full-page

52:41

story just about Aachenbach,

52:43

about what he has done, about his story,

52:46

about the court case. It

52:49

was so present in the

52:51

media. It was incredible. It was

52:53

kind of like

52:56

a crime series in

52:58

itself, because on every day the trial happened,

53:03

there was a new constellation,

53:05

new witnesses, a new kind

53:08

of picture

53:08

of Helge's life and

53:11

how he acted in

53:13

the art market. For Tobias Timm,

53:16

the drama of the trial felt like great fiction.

53:19

But it was all too real for Helge. He

53:22

remembers seeing many familiar faces in the crowd.

53:24

Family, friends,

53:28

critics, art critics, numbers.

53:30

It was full. Every day it was full. Some

53:33

of Helge's former friends and associates would

53:35

testify against him, including

53:37

the artist Tony Cragg and the man Helge

53:39

had hired just before his arrest, the

53:42

man who had blown the whistle,

53:43

Thomas Kelline.

53:45

Almost immediately, the stress of the trial

53:48

got to Helge. So every day

53:50

you go there and you have this audience

53:53

and they are nosy and watch

53:56

you. It was so terrible.

53:59

My lawyer said...

53:59

Don't say anything

54:02

They want to give you ten years. They would

54:04

love to give you ten years In

54:06

essence Mac and I meet our interpreter Minu

54:09

outside the boxy putty colored building

54:11

where the state prosecutor has her office After

54:15

some confusion at the security desk were let

54:17

in greeted by the head of PR The

54:20

PR woman leads us to a well-lit library

54:22

lined with shelves thick with leather bound books

54:25

The prosecutor who brought the case against Helga is

54:28

waiting for us Oh Bijon

54:33

Nice to meet you Valeria Sontag

54:35

was born in st. Petersburg, Russia and

54:37

lived there until she was 15 She

54:40

studied law at a university near Essen

54:42

and has worked as an essence state prosecutor since 2010

54:45

In almost

54:47

every way possible Sontag, which

54:50

is how she introduced herself Just a single

54:52

name is the exact

54:54

opposite of Helga Akhenbach She's

54:57

as thin as a long-distance runner wears

54:59

her hair pulled neatly into a ponytail and

55:02

only laughs when absolutely necessary

55:05

Based on her answers to our questions Sontag

55:08

unlike Helga is definitely

55:10

into the whole brevity thing

55:13

Like when I asked her while making small

55:15

talk what she does for fun These

55:17

are really good at attracting clickers So

55:20

they start styling their stuff in the form

55:22

of those Google machine learning questions

55:25

I'm just like everything you know becoming dumber

55:27

and dumber and dumber and like English is disintegrating

55:30

By the way It has previously been reported that Jacob

55:33

is a banker and is locked in through my count implies that he

55:35

was previously based in New Orleans before moving to

55:37

Los Angeles

55:38

Oh, I bolded that that's my favorite sentence read

55:40

it again. I want to hear it again It's such a good sentence It

55:42

has

55:42

been reported that Jacob is a banker

55:45

and his locked Instagram account implies

55:47

that he was previously based in New Orleans before

55:49

moving to do, Los Angeles

55:50

It says the locked Instagram account implies

55:53

that he was previously based in New Orleans before moving

55:55

to Los Angeles What would you put in

55:57

an Instagram account that would imply that what?

55:59

you think his bio says?

56:02

Like New Orleans plane emoji Los

56:04

Angeles.

56:05

Close. From

56:07

parentheses NO LA to

56:09

just LA. From NOLA to

56:11

LA. See? There you go. Wow that

56:13

does imply that he previously lived in New Orleans and now

56:15

lives in Los Angeles. There's an implication

56:17

there. That is a hell of an implication.

56:19

I'm no Agatha Christie but that's an implication.

56:22

Honey. I want to be famous.

56:25

I want to

56:27

be famous.

56:27

Here's the headline. Joe Manginello

56:30

casually dating new actress Boo after

56:32

divorce from Sofia. Who

56:34

is she? She's an actress who's on...

56:36

She's on a winning

56:38

time. She's

56:40

on the sports show that everyone loves that I haven't

56:42

watched. Oh it got cancelled? Good. I

56:44

don't have to regret not watching it. I

56:47

don't know that I've ever seen this before. They're

56:49

pointing at the age difference between her

56:52

and Sophia Vergara.

56:54

So this headline says Sophia Vergara's ex

56:56

Joe Manginello 46 leaves the gym

56:58

with actress Kate Little Connor 33 who is 18

57:01

years younger than the modern family siren. 18

57:03

years. He

57:05

dated a woman older than he is now he dated a

57:07

woman younger than he is.

57:08

It is I have to say it is say

57:10

after dating a woman who's older than you to

57:12

divorce her and then immediately date a woman who's 18 years

57:15

younger than you. Yeah.

57:16

There's a whole span of years in between 33

57:18

and

57:19

however old Sofia Vergara is

57:21

you know. There's a whole span

57:24

of years. So this

57:26

divorce actually surprised me because there's

57:28

like... No I

57:28

did you see my RT? I was like so

57:30

sad. First of all I retweeted

57:33

it so fast that I was scared that somebody

57:35

did something

57:35

wrong and it like wasn't like I shouldn't have.

57:38

Like

57:38

that's how fast... No that was just more like

57:41

I ignored my impulse

57:43

to kind of wait and see why. I didn't even click until

57:45

before I... I'd retweeted before I

57:47

clicked you know. Oh that's how kind

57:49

of like... That's a dangerous game to play. Re-tweeting

57:51

before

57:51

I clicked. No I felt bad.

57:53

I know trust me. You know the browser's like you sure you

57:56

don't want to read the article and you're like bitch no. Wait.

58:00

We didn't even say what happened. Jeezy filed for divorce

58:02

from Jeannie Mai.

58:03

They were married for two years.

58:05

That's so

58:07

sad. Jeezy's filing says the

58:09

former couple are quote, currently living in a bona

58:11

fide state of separation and that

58:13

their marriage is irretrievably broken

58:16

with quote, no hope for reconciliation.

58:19

But it doesn't say, so Jeezy

58:21

did the filing and I think the implication would

58:24

be that since he did the filing and the documents

58:26

say there's no hope for reconciliation, that

58:28

Jeannie did something wrong. But I don't know that you

58:31

can actually, I'm not willing to jump that

58:33

far just because I feel like I'm very team Jeannie.

58:35

I do feel like that's what you'd

58:37

think but I don't think that's always

58:39

the case.

58:40

It feels like a race to who's gonna file first

58:43

for that reason too.

58:43

The divorce is final and he posts this on

58:46

Instagram. It's him posing in front of this nice car,

58:48

looking good.

58:50

Ring

58:51

on the finger. He's distinctly

58:53

displaying his left hand.

58:55

And it says to focus on who

58:57

I'm becoming to focus on who's

58:59

not coming with me. It's

59:02

truly a Rorschach test. Like this, he's

59:04

displaying the wedding ring.

59:06

Yeah, why would you wear the wedding ring and

59:09

the message is so shady?

59:12

Maybe he fucked up and he was trying to say, I

59:14

still love you despite the fact that you're not coming with me

59:16

or it's fuck you. I'm

59:18

not taking you in my new car. Right, what does

59:20

that even mean? But the fact that he's flashing

59:23

the ring is so weird.

59:25

We're so eagle-eyed towards

59:27

looking for rings in this day and age, wedding

59:29

rings, engagement rings.

59:30

Also, the

59:32

caption was edited.

59:34

What did it say before? We

59:36

don't know. I don't know, we don't know, we don't know.

59:40

We don't know.

59:42

The top comment from just a fan

59:44

is, this caption is crazy now after

59:47

I'm reading the headlines and I feel as crazy as this

59:49

person.

59:49

Well, everyone's like, I hope they can make it work.

59:52

They

59:52

are very hopeful.

59:55

Well, I was like, did she talk about it on Hello Honey,

59:57

my favorite YouTube account, genie my vlog.

59:59

Hello Honey. Hello Hun Nai! Hello

1:00:03

Hun Nai has not been updated in two months. No.

1:00:05

But listen to the most

1:00:07

recent three videos. They could

1:00:09

tell a story. I took my

1:00:11

husband to Vietnam and you won't believe what happened next.

1:00:14

Next one. My husband and I live like locals in Vietnam.

1:00:17

Most recent video.

1:00:18

How Vietnam changed my life forever. Parentheses

1:00:21

gets emotional.

1:00:23

Did something happen in Vietnam?

1:00:24

I mean maybe. I saw a tweet.

1:00:27

I don't want to put this out here but it did make me laugh. But

1:00:29

there is a rumor going

1:00:32

around that is not at all verified. Oh no.

1:00:35

Did you hear the rumor that she was sexting

1:00:37

Mario Lopez? Oh fuck I did! I forgot! You

1:00:40

told me that last night and I said don't text me about Mario

1:00:42

Lopez sexting anyone. Ew. Ew.

1:00:45

But I also don't. It's so so

1:00:47

so so so so unverified. It's literally

1:00:49

just tweets on Twitter. I think

1:00:52

it might be somebody making a joke

1:00:54

about videos of them hosting. Because

1:00:56

they do like I think she hosts co-hosted

1:00:58

some Access Hollywood type thing with him. And they

1:01:01

were having like little moments. But not even anything

1:01:03

just normal like where to co-workers

1:01:06

like being in entertainment moments. I think people

1:01:08

were kind of being all shady about it. So

1:01:10

I tried to find more out about it

1:01:13

but then I was like I was like there's not enough

1:01:15

here to even say this. So I

1:01:17

take it back.

1:01:18

I take it back. I cannot think of Mario

1:01:20

Lopez sexting anyone like he's too presenter

1:01:22

brain. I can't think about that type of vibe.

1:01:25

Can you imagine Regis Philbin texting someone like oh.

1:01:28

I'm

1:01:28

sorry if your job is to say welcome to Access

1:01:30

Hollywood like I don't want to know how you like I

1:01:33

don't know how you're sexy via text like I can't

1:01:35

I can't hear it. Mario Lopez is still pretty sexy.

1:01:38

No I know he is. But he's still pretty sexy.

1:01:41

The cheesiness of hosting extra I think

1:01:43

negates any sexiness that exists. And I'm

1:01:45

concerned about in what way you are

1:01:47

sexy if your job is to be that type of

1:01:49

guy. And how that sort of like seeps into

1:01:52

your DNA your texting DNA.

1:01:54

I will be sending you a dick pic and you

1:01:56

will be loving it. like

1:02:00

some sort of like really weird picture of my dick

1:02:03

is incoming like how do you sex as

1:02:05

a host that's what I'm asking

1:02:07

and I don't know but I don't think it's gonna be good

1:02:09

genie's like thanks Mario now we've

1:02:11

got a report on my tits

1:02:13

now that you've seen my dick let's

1:02:15

take it back to your tits

1:02:17

genie like no

1:02:20

not good and they're both sort of host

1:02:22

vibes anyway

1:02:26

moving on Zoe so's and Alfie days

1:02:28

are I

1:02:30

I don't care about this at all actually

1:02:32

no one no I don't care they're engaged we

1:02:34

talked about them

1:02:35

listen the one-two punch of Jeezy

1:02:37

and genie and then Hugh Jackman and Debra

1:02:40

Lee furnace and breaking up like it

1:02:42

was like actually painful to

1:02:44

watch

1:02:44

that unfold like it it's enough Tiana

1:02:47

and Iman is sort of like okay

1:02:50

they're being like they're being pros they're being so

1:02:52

nice to each other they just like grew apart and their co-parenting

1:02:54

seems very positive genie and Jeezy it's sort of

1:02:56

like something happened or what happened here

1:02:59

Hugh and Debra Lee

1:03:00

you have a couple that just broke up

1:03:03

and something seems wrong you have a couple that says they

1:03:05

broke up a while ago and clearly have been through it and the statement

1:03:07

is on point and it's very like established then

1:03:09

you have a couple that have had this word

1:03:12

it have had 20

1:03:13

years of being like we love each other we love

1:03:16

each other so much almost 30 years

1:03:18

of it like how dare you we love each other yeah

1:03:21

yeah but then when I saw this detail

1:03:24

I was because all Debra Lee furnace Debra Lee furnace

1:03:26

her full-time job is saying my husband's not gay

1:03:28

that's all she does that's her number one job

1:03:31

and I I think that must suck

1:03:33

right she does charity work but when

1:03:35

I saw this detail I was like everything makes

1:03:37

sense I have no further questions your honor case

1:03:40

closed they have two kids one

1:03:42

of them is what 23 the other

1:03:44

one

1:03:45

is 18

1:03:46

this is the most stay together for the kids shit

1:03:48

I've ever seen in my entire life

1:03:50

I mean the fact that the kid turned 18

1:03:52

and they got

1:03:53

they immediately bye-bye

1:03:54

but I do think it is strange because only

1:03:56

like a few months ago they gave their like

1:03:59

Second kind of big moment

1:04:01

where she says like he's not gay if he was

1:04:03

gay he would be dating Tom Cruise Or

1:04:06

I would be dating Tom

1:04:06

Cruise. Sorry. What was the quote? I'm so rude. Hold

1:04:09

on, hold on. If he were gay he'd be gay He'd be dating

1:04:11

anyone. He'd be dating Brad Pitt.

1:04:12

She said he's been gay for whatever I

1:04:14

mean hello guy because she's saying he's been called

1:04:17

gay for what for so many years I mean hello

1:04:19

guys if he was gay he could be gay She said he

1:04:21

wouldn't have to hide in the closet anymore and he'd be dating Brad

1:04:24

Pitt or whatever I love it. She just called Brad Pitt gay.

1:04:26

Not that Brad's gay, but you know what I'm saying?

1:04:28

Not that Brad's gay

1:04:29

And that was not the first time years

1:04:32

ago in his 60 minutes joint interview

1:04:34

They were asked if he was gay and she said if he was gay fine,

1:04:36

he would say he's gay. It's gotten so out of whack

1:04:39

It's stupid. Yeah, it's annoying because it's not

1:04:41

true and he said if I were gay I would be to

1:04:43

me. It's not the most interesting about a person. I

1:04:45

do get frustrated for Deb

1:04:47

That was the original

1:04:48

but do you think Ben is back?

1:04:49

I think whether or not Ben is back is entirely

1:04:52

irrelevant in the situation

1:04:54

Yeah I agree

1:04:55

as someone who's like very and I

1:04:57

hate talking about Ben is backness publicly But

1:04:59

like privately of course I do like thinking about

1:05:01

it Like it just feels sort of icky to talk about it publicly,

1:05:04

but I know you really lying Yeah,

1:05:06

that you're not Ben is back in private. Yeah,

1:05:09

I'd be lying if I I'd be lying if I said I don't Ben is

1:05:11

back generally in private.

1:05:12

No, and I appreciate that honesty

1:05:13

I just think this is just so this

1:05:16

is just seems so clear to me and like everyone's

1:05:18

shocked But who who said it was it you or

1:05:20

you were Steven? Who said something

1:05:23

like the moment this released it was like prepare

1:05:25

yourselves for like the most disgusting tweets

1:05:28

incoming and they were so

1:05:32

It's not only nasty,

1:05:34

but it's boring

1:05:35

it's boring. Yeah, do

1:05:37

we care about

1:05:38

Tom Sandoval dating someone? No, no Do

1:05:41

we care about Eric Lemon Ides and

1:05:43

Lee Felty dating?

1:05:45

What if he's a he's a restaurant

1:05:48

group owner?

1:05:49

Mm-hmm, and he and he married

1:05:51

his agent.

1:05:51

It's an extravagant Hamptons

1:05:54

wedding attended by Don Lemon Joy Behar

1:05:56

and Huma Abadine had a flash mob drone

1:05:59

show

1:05:59

And can you guess the final thing that's in the spotlight?

1:06:03

Extravagant Hamptons wedding attended by Dawn

1:06:05

Lemon, Joy Behar and Huma Havidin had a flash

1:06:07

mob drone show and

1:06:10

fill in the blank.

1:06:12

You took too long Debbie Gibson, Debbie Gibson. The

1:06:15

drone show that played like over Lady Gaga

1:06:17

said when she was like, and liberty and justice went

1:06:21

over their house and the Hamptons and it said love

1:06:23

wins.

1:06:23

I have an announcement. I have it. I have

1:06:25

the hiccup.

1:06:26

So I need me to read it

1:06:28

to read it then.

1:06:31

What was she wearing? Where

1:06:34

was she seen? She

1:06:36

posted what? On Instagram.

1:06:39

She's a who queen.

1:06:40

And the people

1:06:43

want to know all

1:06:46

about the number

1:06:49

one who. Please, anybody,

1:06:52

tell us how.

1:06:55

What's Rita Ora up to?

1:06:58

Who is this woman? Rita's going to be on

1:07:01

Watch What Happens Live tomorrow. Who's she

1:07:03

going to be with? That's right. Diplo. Yikes. I'm

1:07:05

going to watch the energy between Rita Ora and Diplo

1:07:07

is going to be electric. And Andy Cohen is going to be like, we're having

1:07:09

a free sum after this. I hundred percent. Are

1:07:11

you kidding for some? You forgot about Taika. He's

1:07:13

not invited.

1:07:16

He's not invited.

1:07:17

Andy Redo is hot. And if Andy doesn't if

1:07:20

Andy doesn't

1:07:20

propose they hang out after, that's a huge loss

1:07:22

for him. And I would be disappointed.

1:07:24

That's a huge slay. Rita

1:07:27

Ora, she also put on a glamorous. I mean, she's in New

1:07:29

York City. That's the thing. She's in New York City. And

1:07:31

what I would the only thing I don't love about this is

1:07:33

that Watch

1:07:34

What Happens Live, which is not a WGA show,

1:07:39

shaved. Shaved. Already

1:07:41

filmed this stuff.

1:07:42

So

1:07:43

you're saying it's already filmed? These are already these

1:07:46

are canned?

1:07:46

The episode exists. So

1:07:48

a friend of ours, a mutual friend of ours

1:07:50

has a conspiracy about Rita. She thinks Rita has

1:07:53

a body double. She says the woman can't possibly be

1:07:55

all these places. And I was like, this is literally her number

1:07:57

one thing is being all these places. I think that's a

1:07:59

bad conspiracy.

1:07:59

I think I know what you're talking about, and I think that's about conspiracy. Rita's

1:08:02

whole thing is being everywhere all the time.

1:08:05

Okay, so I encountered

1:08:07

some Rita Ora news like live in person

1:08:09

this week. I was on my

1:08:11

way up to the cursed Alamo Drafthouse

1:08:13

at your favorite and my least favorite

1:08:16

in downtown Brooklyn. Riding up

1:08:18

the escalators, and I'm like,

1:08:21

oh, I can't believe I'm here, da-da-da. You

1:08:23

have like five escalators.

1:08:24

Five escalators, and on my way

1:08:26

up, guess what store is in the

1:08:28

mall where Alamo Drafthouse?

1:08:30

Yeah, it used to be a Century 21, yeah.

1:08:32

And guess what I saw? The Rita

1:08:34

Ora signage. And I stopped it and I cried. Oh, you saw it in person.

1:08:37

And I said, what?

1:08:39

Huh, who? And

1:08:41

then I realized

1:08:42

Rita Ora was doing a Primark

1:08:44

collaboration. Did you buy some product?

1:08:46

No, it's not out yet.

1:08:48

Oh, it's not out yet? Okay, I thought it was already out.

1:08:50

It was

1:08:50

like they were setting up to put it in stores.

1:08:52

At first I was like, oh, it's gonna be

1:08:54

like, what is it, like a scent? Is it a fragrance? Is it something,

1:08:56

but it's like, no, it's a clothes.

1:08:58

No, it's a fashion collab. Rita

1:09:00

Ora and Primark, from loyal customer,

1:09:02

Mela Well, to global brand

1:09:04

partner. Primark joins voices with Rita Ora for

1:09:06

new fashion collaboration. They wrote,

1:09:08

the director of future trends and innovation at

1:09:11

Primark, great job, wrote,

1:09:12

in a world of collaboration

1:09:14

overload, it's more important than ever for

1:09:16

brand partnerships to be rooted in genuine

1:09:19

authenticity and connection. We've

1:09:21

known Rita to be a Primark fan for a long

1:09:23

time, but it was only when we ran into her almost two years

1:09:25

ago and got chatting. Who is this, Primark,

1:09:28

him? The brand? That we

1:09:30

realized the extent of our love for the brand. Yeah, I

1:09:32

bet you did. She loves to sell herself,

1:09:35

to do shit like this. The instant chemistry

1:09:37

between both parties was undeniable. Rita

1:09:39

and the clothes. And today, following months

1:09:41

of collaboration,

1:09:42

I'm so proud to be revealing

1:09:44

Rita Ora X Primark. Bringing together

1:09:46

the best of Primark and Rita. I

1:09:48

hope the collection allows customers to express

1:09:51

their- Again? I like to read and I like

1:09:53

to travel.

1:09:53

SunTog

1:09:56

is no more expansive when it comes to discussing

1:09:59

Helga's trial.

1:10:00

I

1:10:02

didn't feel too many emotions.

1:10:04

I was assigned the case and I got straight

1:10:06

to work. I asked myself

1:10:09

how can we argue this case and how can

1:10:11

we get to an appropriate

1:10:13

result.

1:10:14

For Suntag, this was not a complicated

1:10:16

case, even though it was also

1:10:19

her first high-profile

1:10:20

case.

1:10:21

I first heard of him when he was

1:10:23

sued by Mr. Eilricht.

1:10:26

And at the beginning, the case seemed completely

1:10:28

normal. The only unusual thing

1:10:30

was the amount of

1:10:32

money that was involved.

1:10:34

She treated Helge as she would anyone

1:10:37

else in her courtroom. When I got

1:10:40

the case

1:10:40

assigned, I wasn't aware how

1:10:43

famous Mr. Aachenbach was in

1:10:46

his industry. Throughout

1:10:49

the prosecution, I

1:10:51

just

1:10:52

saw him as a suspect. He

1:10:54

was someone who took advantage

1:10:57

of a good opportunity for

1:10:59

him to make

1:11:01

money. And in that case, he

1:11:03

was

1:11:04

a suspect to me, like any

1:11:06

other suspect. Helge's forged invoices,

1:11:08

his collages, were the primary

1:11:11

pieces of evidence in the case. And

1:11:13

then there was something that happened on the second day of

1:11:15

the trial.

1:11:16

Mr. Aachenbach confessed. I

1:11:20

can't say for sure how much of that was

1:11:23

also his way

1:11:25

of getting as little damage as possible,

1:11:27

how much of it was methodical. I

1:11:30

think the evidence was very clear-cut

1:11:32

and there was no way of denying so that

1:11:34

in the end the confession was necessary.

1:11:37

We asked Sontag

1:11:39

about the key to Helge's defense,

1:11:41

the claim of the buyback clause, the 4%

1:11:44

guarantee for Berthold.

1:11:46

There was no proof of

1:11:48

these buyback clauses, and

1:11:51

there was no evidence that he could

1:11:53

actually economically afford that at

1:11:55

all. It wasn't really meant seriously.

1:11:58

It was more to protect

1:12:00

And we asked who gave the most damning testimony.

1:12:03

The most important witness statement

1:12:05

was surely Mrs. Albrecht.

1:12:07

Before

1:12:09

saying goodbye to Valeria Sontag, there

1:12:12

was one last thing I was curious about. Do you

1:12:14

buy art?

1:12:15

I do like art indeed, and I do

1:12:18

have some art pieces at home. But

1:12:20

I buy them because I like them and not because

1:12:22

they have a high value.

we're going to tell you about the other

1:12:49

terrible thing Harvey Weinstein did, and

1:13:12

1:13:16

After a four-month trial, Helga was

1:13:18

found guilty on 18 charges

1:13:21

of fraud. He was sentenced

1:13:23

to six years in jail and ordered

1:13:25

to pay by Bet Albrecht 19.4 million euros. Helga

1:13:30

cried in the courtroom and told the judges

1:13:32

he felt ashamed of what he had done. He

1:13:35

was bitter and bewildered. He

1:13:38

felt as if the punishment far outweighed

1:13:40

the crime. It was a stupid game.

1:13:42

It was a fucking game. It was a terrible

1:13:44

game. I hate it. Helga

1:13:47

was led out of court and brought to a prison in

1:13:49

Essen.

1:13:50

Two days later, he received a visitor in

1:13:52

his cell.

1:13:53

I'm Michael Luker, and I'm the pastor

1:13:56

in the jail where Helga Arsenbach. There

1:13:59

hasn't been.

1:13:59

Father Luca remembers that when he first met

1:14:02

Helga, he was worried. In

1:14:04

the beginning,

1:14:07

he was shocked. He said,

1:14:09

I didn't do anything and I

1:14:12

don't know why I'm here.

1:14:15

Yes, we discussed a lot. And

1:14:17

I said, it's better for you if you

1:14:19

feel your own guilty.

1:14:22

Because if you sit in the jail

1:14:25

and you're always struggling and

1:14:28

saying, well, why I'm here, it's

1:14:33

not good for you. Because then

1:14:35

you are always fighting against

1:14:38

yourself, against the others.

1:14:40

The two men got along well and Helga took

1:14:42

to chatting with the priest in his office at the end

1:14:45

of every week.

1:14:46

We talk a lot about his life

1:14:48

and his lifestyle, about the

1:14:51

philosophy of life. If

1:14:54

you

1:14:54

live in the upper

1:14:57

class and you are

1:14:59

always

1:15:01

somebody

1:15:03

and everybody is praying

1:15:06

to you, it's not good

1:15:09

for your own personality.

1:15:12

And we talk a lot

1:15:14

about this. And I said

1:15:16

to him, what type of person

1:15:18

have you been before the

1:15:21

selling of art starts?

1:15:24

And it was very interesting because

1:15:26

he was a self-worker in

1:15:29

the jail also.

1:15:30

Father Luca is referring to Helga's year

1:15:32

working in the Juvenile Detention Center in Siegberg.

1:15:36

The priest wanted Helga to remember that before

1:15:38

he met Gerhard Richter, before he did

1:15:40

deals with IBM and Jeff Koons and Keith

1:15:42

Haring and Bertolt Albrecht, before

1:15:45

all of the cars and the homes and the private planes,

1:15:48

Helga had simply wanted to help people live

1:15:50

better lives. Father

1:15:52

Luca's advice to Helga when they spoke often

1:15:55

boiled down to just that.

1:15:57

Be more like the guy you used to be and...

1:15:59

less like the person you've become.

1:16:01

I said, maybe

1:16:03

you go a little bit back

1:16:06

to this personality.

1:16:08

Out of these weekly conversations, Helga

1:16:10

began thinking of what he might do after

1:16:12

he was released from prison. How he

1:16:14

could start over, somewhere far from

1:16:16

the art world.

1:16:18

Culture of his own borders started already in

1:16:20

the prison. When I was in

1:16:22

deep, deep shit, deep,

1:16:24

deep trouble, I

1:16:27

saw a nice little

1:16:30

movie about this

1:16:33

punk band, Pussy

1:16:35

Ride in Moscow, where they

1:16:37

were dancing in the church and

1:16:40

put in, put them in jail. And

1:16:51

different persons, artists,

1:16:53

which are there because they were fighting

1:16:56

for the freedom. And I would

1:16:58

love to help them in the future,

1:17:01

to protect them and give them a chance.

1:17:04

So that was my idea,

1:17:07

to do something for my inner soul,

1:17:09

you know, for my freedom. Helga's

1:17:11

idea would be deferred for years while he

1:17:13

did his time.

1:17:15

But soon, he fell into a rhythm that,

1:17:17

against all odds,

1:17:19

felt good to him.

1:17:20

Along with 11 other men, he joined Father

1:17:23

Lucas' choir. He was a good singer, yes,

1:17:25

of course, because he has a good body

1:17:28

for singing.

1:17:30

There's

1:17:31

coming a lot of voice

1:17:34

out of this

1:17:36

very big body. Helga's bass

1:17:38

blended with the choir's other voices. Those

1:17:41

of murderers and thieves and Thomas

1:17:44

Middelhoff, a former Bertelsmann executive

1:17:46

in for embezzlement and tax evasion.

1:17:49

Middelhoff sang baritone.

1:17:51

Father Lucas told us that Helga had a few favorite

1:17:53

songs. There's one song

1:17:56

from Dieterch Bonwoofer. It's

1:17:58

a German song.

1:17:59

who were killed by

1:18:02

the Nazis.

1:18:04

And it's a very famous song

1:18:06

in German. It's called Von Rootenmächten,

1:18:09

Wunderbagenborn. It's about that

1:18:13

also if you are in prison,

1:18:15

if you have a lot of

1:18:18

trouble,

1:18:19

goddess with you always,

1:18:21

and you can feel it. And

1:18:24

Bittig-Bonhoeffer wrote a letter

1:18:26

out of the prison

1:18:28

to his wife.

1:18:30

And

1:18:31

this letter is now the song. And

1:18:34

there's also a song

1:18:35

through selves and to show their inner

1:18:37

aura.

1:18:39

That's good. So now read it or has a fast

1:18:41

fashion brand. Congrats. The US listeners

1:18:43

who were listening to this, it's sort of,

1:18:46

it's very like H&M-E Zara. There

1:18:48

aren't that many in the United States yet. It's like a,

1:18:50

it's a fast fashion company that has

1:18:53

recently sort of put a foot in the United States.

1:18:55

Yeah, but it's kind of like a classic

1:18:57

British brand

1:18:58

that people loved when they went. It's Irish.

1:19:01

It's very targetty. Oh yeah, it is. I think,

1:19:03

yeah, I don't know. Well, either way, I don't know. They love

1:19:05

it.

1:19:06

Anyway, so she was here for Fashion Week, and she

1:19:08

announced her fashion

1:19:09

thing. And then she went to the Invictus

1:19:12

Games and hung out with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

1:19:14

Of course, why wouldn't you?

1:19:16

And that one guy, who's the guy with the long

1:19:18

hair who was in Eurovision? What's his name?

1:19:20

Like, I always forget his name. Right. He did

1:19:22

the covers on

1:19:23

his talk and then they sent him.

1:19:25

He was like Britain's winner, or Britain's choice.

1:19:28

Yeah, well, he didn't win. Tell you that. Britain

1:19:30

long hair Eurovision. Sam.

1:19:33

Sam.

1:19:34

Sam what?

1:19:35

Sam Ryder. Yeah.

1:19:37

She's getting called out for fast fashion stuff.

1:19:40

Then, of course, she went to Vogue

1:19:42

World. I mean, she literally like,

1:19:45

she has to go every, if there is something

1:19:47

happening, Rita Ora is going. It's so incredible

1:19:50

that she doesn't, she does not, she was at

1:19:52

the VMAs. She doesn't skip a beat. She

1:19:54

presented the VMAs. She was at Vogue World. She's

1:19:57

doing Primark in New York, Fashion Week. Fashion

1:19:59

Week. She was at Venice. She's at the Invictus

1:20:01

Games.

1:20:03

Honey, take a nap. This is why the

1:20:05

conspiracy theory that our friend has about

1:20:07

her not having a body double, which I can't tell if they were serious

1:20:09

or not. No, they're serious. She would

1:20:11

need an identical twin. It couldn't just be

1:20:14

a body double. It would have to be an identical twin. So

1:20:16

that's a better conspiracy theory. Rita Ora has

1:20:18

an identical twin.

1:20:19

Well?

1:20:21

I'll believe that over body double. A

1:20:24

secret identical twin. That's like a fun

1:20:26

YA novel.

1:20:27

Okay. Okay, we're done. Thank you for listening to this episode

1:20:48

Thank

1:20:55

you to

1:20:58

Timmy, Vinnie, our research and editorial

1:21:00

assistant for providing our

1:21:04

researching and editorializing. I

1:21:06

can't do this. Oh my god, I'm sorry. You

1:21:08

are literally doing it. Beck Shaw's like, I'm going to kill you right

1:21:10

now. What else? I

1:21:13

think we're done. We'll see you on Friday.

1:21:15

Bye. Hey. Hey.

1:21:19

Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey.

1:21:23

His wife tried to kill him. He's a normal

1:21:25

person. I love it. That's the funniest thing ever said

1:21:27

on any podcast. Um,

1:21:30

Peter Maughry. It's a German singer

1:21:33

and it's called Ubersie

1:21:35

Brütten. Father Lucas sent us a

1:21:37

recording of the prison choir singing this song.

1:21:40

The translation is you

1:21:42

have to go

1:21:45

over a second.

1:21:59

bridge in your life

1:22:02

and go through

1:22:04

a lot of micronals. Then

1:22:07

at the end, yes, you

1:22:09

can feel like a child

1:22:11

and you are remembering the love

1:22:14

of the child. Helga and Father Luca

1:22:16

also spoke a lot about Helga's childhood,

1:22:19

growing up with a cold and distant mom and

1:22:21

a dad who was not his biological father.

1:22:24

I think this is also one of the big

1:22:27

points of

1:22:29

Helga. He is searching

1:22:31

love.

1:22:33

Everybody is searching

1:22:36

love. The main theme

1:22:38

of the Bible, the main theme for me as a pastor,

1:22:41

the main theme of the people I'm

1:22:44

working with and also a very,

1:22:47

very, very big theme of Helga

1:22:51

is searching love,

1:22:52

always looking,

1:22:55

how can I get a little bit involved?

1:22:58

In part because of his weekly conversations with Father

1:23:01

Luca, Helga says he was able to start

1:23:03

to think differently about his life. I

1:23:05

think honestly, very

1:23:08

deep, honest.

1:23:10

I was

1:23:11

completely in peace with myself,

1:23:14

even in the prison because

1:23:17

I knew I had done a fucking

1:23:20

mistake and I should

1:23:22

not do it and I should

1:23:25

not do things like this. I thought,

1:23:30

okay, if I'm going out and I try

1:23:32

to live a new life, honest

1:23:36

life, radical honest life and

1:23:39

without any kind of

1:23:43

trickies anymore,

1:23:47

the life will be better. A

1:23:49

few months into his prison term, Helga joined

1:23:51

an art program. It was

1:23:54

the first time he'd painted since he was a young man.

1:23:57

He painted alongside other prisoners who were

1:23:59

impressed the amount of money Helga had taken

1:24:01

from the Albrechts. They called him

1:24:03

Gangster. They liked me. He

1:24:07

took the money from the rich. Some

1:24:11

of course were thinking, can I have a million

1:24:13

from you? The art program was,

1:24:16

and still is, run by a local

1:24:18

artist named Anna Berlett. She

1:24:20

admired the way Helga united her group of convicts.

1:24:23

He was

1:24:25

warm-hearted, and

1:24:29

he was able to ignite

1:24:32

a warm light.

1:24:35

And this

1:24:35

radiates to all the

1:24:37

other of the group. He wanted

1:24:39

to do big canvas. And

1:24:43

when I

1:24:44

asked if I can bring some

1:24:46

big canvas, and after a while

1:24:48

everybody wanted to paint on

1:24:51

big canvas, but this is in

1:24:54

this institution of a prison

1:24:56

that's not easy

1:24:58

to handle because what

1:25:00

can we do with the canvas? The

1:25:04

prisoners aren't

1:25:05

allowed to take the canvas

1:25:07

to their

1:25:07

cell. Eventually, Anna

1:25:10

convinced Helga to work on smaller canvases

1:25:12

and to take his time with each painting.

1:25:15

I motivated him to stay,

1:25:17

to task, and to go

1:25:18

deeper into themes.

1:25:21

He was able to stay for

1:25:24

one canvas three months,

1:25:26

four months, five months. So we started

1:25:29

over and over again. After all,

1:25:31

I realized that this is not

1:25:33

at all his habit. He

1:25:36

is a person

1:25:38

of great ideas, which

1:25:41

all comes out of him by

1:25:44

his intuition. I was doing

1:25:47

always landscape

1:25:49

to bring my

1:25:52

own soul in shape because

1:25:56

I called it all the spending spirit

1:25:58

of freedom. So in

1:26:00

this mind, I was

1:26:03

free.

1:26:04

Two years later, Helga was transferred to

1:26:06

another prison early on good behavior.

1:26:09

For two more years, he would be in something Germans

1:26:11

call open prison, meaning

1:26:13

he could work and live outside the prison during

1:26:16

the day and only had to return

1:26:18

there to sleep. He

1:26:20

now had the time and space to begin his work on

1:26:22

culture without borders. So

1:26:25

he gathered a handful of friends who remained loyal to him

1:26:27

and convinced them to invest in the idea.

1:26:31

The British architect David Chipperfield, another

1:26:33

old friend, agreed to help renovate the

1:26:35

rundown farmhouse in Karst. And

1:26:38

Anna Berlett agreed to help conceive of what

1:26:40

this new organization should do. Everything

1:26:44

seemed to be coming together.

1:26:46

But because this is a story about Helga Aachenbach,

1:26:49

his new life gets complicated fast. I

1:26:52

worked there, but he wanted that I

1:26:54

join the group and live there

1:26:57

within. And I

1:27:00

didn't want it all. So

1:27:03

no, yes, I left

1:27:05

the group, but I'm still in the association,

1:27:08

but not in the inner

1:27:10

circle of the association.

1:27:12

And I don't like to bullshit around.

1:27:14

Believe me, it is. I am not

1:27:17

interested to bullshit around. So

1:27:20

I believe you. You can believe

1:27:23

me.

1:27:26

On the next episode of Chameleon. In

1:27:29

Germany, for example, we

1:27:31

have people who make bigger

1:27:34

mistakes than this. God

1:27:36

said six years for this. Yeah,

1:27:40

absolutely crazy. Helga begins to rebuild

1:27:42

his life. Are his actions hurtful?

1:27:45

And I don't think so. But his new start

1:27:47

brings old problems.

1:27:48

I have a very family feeling

1:27:51

with the elders. Yes. You know, like

1:27:53

a guru sometimes. It can be like

1:27:55

this.

1:27:56

Like a guru.

1:27:58

Guru, yeah. I think it's a good thing.

1:28:03

And those closest to Helge question his

1:28:05

motives.

1:28:07

Do you

1:28:08

trust Helge? He always

1:28:11

can trust me,

1:28:12

but I'm not sure if

1:28:15

I trust him.

1:28:16

But

1:28:17

I try to trust him. That's next

Chameleon: The Michigan Plot

In the fall of 2020, 14 men were arrested across three states in a series of FBI raids that shocked the nation. The government alleged that these men conspired to kidnap, and possibly even kill, the sitting governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. But is that really what happened? On season 7 of Chameleon, we’ll explore that notorious plot to kidnap governor Whitmer from its inception by taking listeners on an unprecedented journey inside the investigation. Through hundreds of hours of wire recordings that have never been heard by the public, you’ll ride along in the pocket of an FBI informant posing as a militia member, as he infiltrates an anti-government group that seems dangerous. But are they? Was the plot to kidnap governor Whitmer the sophisticated plan the government said it was, or just the stoned fantasies of a group of down-on-their-luck gun nuts? Did the FBI stop a dangerous plot in motion…or did it help to create it? Want the full story? Unlock all episodes of Chameleon: The Michigan Plot, ad-free, right now by subscribing to The Binge.
