Hey guys, it's calum scott here.
0:02
Class 95 gets up close
0:04
with calum scott. Hi
0:07
Callum. It's so good to see you. How
0:09
are you? I'm good. So the
0:11
last time you spoke to us was actually with Gene
0:13
back in 2018. And since then we've
0:15
had Covid, I mean, everybody experienced
0:17
the horrible pandemic. What have you been
0:20
up to these last two years during the pandemic?
0:22
How was it for you?
0:23
It was pretty awful. I mean,
0:25
it's the same for everybody, right? We were stripped
0:27
of being able to be with the people we loved,
0:29
couldn't travel, couldn't go into venues.
0:31
So it was pretty rough. I mean, for the first
0:34
couple of weeks of that lock down,
0:36
I just sat in my pants and played Call of
0:38
Duty. I just didn't, I didn't know what to
0:40
do, drinking wine, sat
0:42
on the couch watching netflix and
0:44
all that kind of stuff. I think when everybody started
0:47
to realize actually this is pretty serious. And that's
0:49
when I kind of started to I
0:51
fell out of love with music, to be fair with
0:53
my own music because I just felt that
0:56
there was so many other things going on that were
0:58
much more important than me writing a sad
1:00
song. You know, I lost a lot of inspiration
1:03
and motivation. But I think
1:05
as we start to see some light at the end of the tunnel,
1:07
my producer had been in touch and sent me
1:09
some music and I started working again, reignited
1:12
the Passion. So thankfully I
1:14
finished the album during the pandemic. And
1:16
yeah, releasing it in like literally
1:19
a couple of weeks. It's crazy.
1:21
Yeah, I was scared. Don't
1:23
be scared. We're really psyched to get
1:26
new music from you. Was it difficult sort of
1:28
restarting the whole engine? Did you have to do anything
1:30
to sort of get the creative juices
1:31
flowing? Yeah. Yeah,
1:34
it was one of those ones where it was like, you know,
1:36
like when you've had so much time off school and
1:38
you know, you have to go back and you have that not
1:40
feeling in your stomach, like, I really don't want to go
1:42
back. It was kind of that like, I was just
1:44
like, like I've fallen off the rhythm,
1:47
so now I have to, like try and get myself back
1:49
into that. But music is
1:51
one of the most incredible things of it.
1:53
It's like a universal language, right? So
1:55
I think even though I was getting down on my look,
1:58
music kind of helped bring me back up
2:00
and then me writing music helped
2:02
me motivate other people. So I kind
2:05
of had a ripple effect.
2:06
It's a full circle actually. Yeah,
2:07
yeah, music helps me and then my music
2:10
helps others and so on. And so
2:12
tell us about your new song called Heaven.
2:14
Heaven is such a beautiful
2:17
song. You know, I think as songwriters,
2:19
you're constantly trying to find new ways
2:21
of saying, I love you,
2:23
I hate you. You know, you've
2:26
broken my heart, all those kind of things.
2:28
And I think for me heaven is one of
2:30
those ones where it's just a song about
2:32
loving somebody in the present
2:34
and we're all suckers for it.
2:36
We all, you know, we're all wondering what's happening
2:38
next and what's the next thing and you
2:41
know, worried about the next step. Whereas I think
2:43
heaven reminds people, it's kind
2:45
of bringing that concept of what I have with
2:47
you right now is the most perfect
2:49
thing I'll ever have. And I think
2:51
that it's so beautiful to sort
2:53
of remind yourself to live in the present. So
2:55
loving the present as well. I think it's just
2:57
gorgeous and it has this kind of lush,
3:00
big ballad sound to it without
3:02
it just being piano and vocal because
3:04
I'm a sucker for getting behind
3:07
the piano and just singing a sad song.
3:09
I love it. I love to have
3:11
a good cry. I love to be emotional,
3:13
but heaven is one of those ones where we've put
3:15
some production behind it. It sounds, it just
3:17
sounds very big. So when we've been singing it live
3:20
recently, it's always seems to be going down well
3:22
and people have already messaged me saying, yeah, that's
3:24
the first dance song at my wedding and
3:26
we love it already.
3:27
Yeah, thank you. It seems to be going down
3:29
so well.
3:30
So what is heaven for you then right
3:32
now, since we're talking about the present,
3:34
Heaven for me is
3:36
opening a lovely bottle of red wine for
3:40
me is
3:41
that particular time, is that
3:44
we love them, We love
3:46
them. But you
3:48
know what I think, I mean, I do, but
3:51
I think, you know, at this moment in time
3:53
looking at my touring schedule and just
3:55
being like, I'm getting to go away again
3:57
and getting to perform all these shows again. I mean,
4:00
I'm going to be back in Singapore performing
4:02
a show there again. It's just like all
4:04
the excitement I felt from 2018
4:06
when I was last in Singapore and
4:08
the show there and you know, I was doing promo
4:10
there, it was so incredible to be in a new country
4:13
and for my music to already have planted
4:15
a beautiful seed and a gorgeous flowers
4:17
growing there. And then I got to go and tend
4:19
that flower and be in Singapore.
4:22
So to come back, it's just going to be my heaven
4:24
for
4:24
Sure. So just going back when you last
4:26
year, which is in 2018 when you spoke to gene,
4:28
you said that you wanted to adventure more.
4:30
Did that happen? You also said you wanted to do
4:32
some acting. Did that happen as
4:34
well? No, unfortunately,
4:37
I know I really wanted
4:39
to do some acting. I think that's
4:41
definitely still on my bucket list of things to do.
4:43
I just released the music and the other day
4:45
called Boys in the street, which is this very,
4:47
very emotional song. That was my first
4:50
step into acting because I had to
4:52
act to parts of the story, one
4:54
was a young boy, one was a kind of a
4:56
father figure that was getting down on
4:58
the boy. And so I had to kind of represent
5:00
that visually. So that was quite a nice little step
5:03
into that kind of vibe as for exploring.
5:05
Singapore didn't get to do that either. What
5:08
I've been doing my research though and
5:10
I have seen, I've seen that you guys have
5:13
the Gardens of the Bay.
5:14
Yeah, this is going to be the last stop on the asian tour,
5:16
isn't it? I do believe, hopefully
5:19
you have some
5:19
time. Hopefully I want to come to see the
5:21
Gardens of the Bay. I wanted, I've seen something
5:23
called the Centaurus a giant swing,
5:26
I don't know, there's a giant
5:29
swing,
5:29
Okay. I mean it looks terrifying,
5:32
but it looks it looks gorgeous
5:34
as far as I could see. There's tons of like gardens
5:37
and zoos and lots of like nature
5:39
and stuff, which I'm very
5:43
impressed,
5:43
very small, but we've got a lot of things to do and the offer still
5:45
stands, jean said the last
5:47
time she'll take you around and I will join this time
5:49
around and we'll be a proper good tour
5:51
guides if you have the time. Absolutely.
5:54
Getting back to the music, tell us about what we
5:56
talked about your new song called Heaven, let's talk
5:58
about your new album, which should be coming out soon as well.
6:00
What can we expect Is it going to be in the line in the
6:02
vein of Heaven? It's gonna be something different.
6:05
I think there's gonna be a really nice
6:07
journey with this album, because,
6:09
you know, the first album was very much me being like,
6:12
oh my God, I'm sand, and I get to, like,
6:14
do this album, this is crazy. And like, you
6:16
know, everything was kind of like, like a kid
6:18
at christmas. Yeah, it was just like, oh my God,
6:20
I get to be Business is so exciting.
6:23
And I think when it, when it came to writing the second
6:25
album, it was kind of very much like a
6:27
right, you're an artist now there's
6:29
a new level to it. You know, you're an artist,
6:31
people relied on your songs to get by
6:33
or to become more confident with themselves,
6:36
or, you know, they might have used your music as
6:38
the first dance on a wedding or to celebrate
6:40
somebody's life or whatever it is, sound tracking
6:42
these amazing moments in their life. So now I have a responsibility
6:45
and I took that very seriously and
6:48
it kind of made me grow up a little bit.
6:50
Do you feel the pressure though?
6:51
Yeah, of course, of course. I mean, you
6:53
look at the ridiculous stats at the
6:55
first album and you're like, well no
6:57
pressure. Just
6:59
got to write an album that breaks all those records.
7:02
There was some pressure when I was writing this album, but
7:04
I must admit, the more that I just
7:06
enjoyed writing the second album
7:09
as that kind of stage in my life
7:11
is this is just the next chapter
7:13
for me, the more I started
7:15
really enjoying the process, I must
7:17
admit, I feel more confident on this album.
7:19
I feel like my writing and my vocal ability
7:21
is, is developed. You know, there's a new sense
7:23
of, like, hope and resilience
7:26
within this album. So it's definitely
7:28
don't get me wrong, there's definitely quite a few ballads
7:31
on exactly
7:34
prepared to cry. But you know what, I feel
7:37
like it's an elevated, more evolved
7:39
version of the first album. It's
7:41
very emotional and emotional provoking,
7:44
but then you also have those moments where it's just like,
7:46
okay, yeah, I feel good about this song
7:48
and it makes you feel motivated? So it's
7:50
a journey which I'm always really keen
7:53
to show up my life shows, and all my albums.
7:55
You've always been quite raw when it comes
7:57
to writing your music, you bare your soul.
7:59
But that was also at the beginning where everything
8:02
is very new. Do you feel
8:04
like being in this industry for a couple
8:06
of years already? Do you feel
8:08
like you still bear everything? Everything
8:10
is you're wearing heart, your heart on the sleeve? Or do
8:12
you feel that now maybe some things are
8:14
no go zones when it comes to writing the songs,
8:17
or is it No, it's
8:18
all put it all
8:21
down. You know what I've never
8:23
really known any different. So
8:25
I've only ever like being honest
8:27
and being vulnerable and used my
8:29
life experiences and my personal experiences
8:31
don't get me wrong. There are some songs on this album, one
8:33
of them called Bridges, the title track of the
8:35
album that is very personal.
8:38
I argued with myself whether I should put
8:40
this song on the album and then I realized that
8:42
some of the songs on the album have been such
8:45
tools for people and has been a medicine
8:47
in some ways for people that
8:49
I kind of owe it to my friends and to my audience
8:51
to be honest and vulnerable because
8:54
it's honestly that pays two fold. You know,
8:56
like when I've been honest with my music in the past,
8:59
people will send me messages all the time
9:01
with their own stories and they're
9:03
being personal with me. So I kind of feel
9:05
that it's the only way I know how to do things.
9:07
It's just bear in my heart and soul and
9:10
put my blood sweat and tears into a song, Don't
9:12
get me wrong. All my songs like that
9:15
are a little bit more, you know,
9:16
but we really appreciate it because I think it
9:18
takes a lot of courage and a lot of, a
9:20
lot of courage and bravery to actually put
9:22
your soul out their final question, you're gonna be in
9:24
Singapore to perform for us at the capitol theater.
9:27
What can we expect?
9:28
I mean, it's going to be, there's going to
9:30
be a new sense of appreciation,
9:33
I guess for live music. I mean, we're finally
9:35
back in venue. So it's just going to be
9:37
that magic of being shoulder to shoulder
9:39
with people and me being able to
9:41
see the lights in people's eyes, it's no longer a
9:43
zoom screen is actually people
9:46
in front of me and that magic of
9:48
being at a live show and enjoying
9:50
just forgetting about everything that's going on in the
9:52
world and just being present in that moment in
9:54
that theater is just going to be the best
9:56
brand new music, full albums, worth
9:58
of new music and a new band that I
10:00
love that I've got on so well with
10:03
what I want to do is I just want to bring my live show
10:05
to Singapore, I want to make it
10:07
bigger and better than last time. I want to make
10:09
sure that people walk away from the capitol
10:11
theater and I'm so glad that I
10:13
went to that show, It was worth every penny. You know,
10:15
because that's the kind of show I want to put on,
10:17
I want to make sure that people walk away and go, oh
10:19
my God, that was amazing. And I want to bring
10:21
on some new fans. You know, if
10:24
you've never been to one of my shows before and
10:26
you're thinking about booking tickets, please do. It's going
10:28
to be a lovely night of just love
10:30
and appreciation and enjoyment.
10:33
Whether you're really into the music side
10:35
of things or whether you're into the lyrics
10:37
or whether you just want to sit and cry
10:39
or move and bop along. There's something
10:41
for everybody.
10:42
It's a human connection and we're definitely looking forward
10:44
to that. Looking forward to see you in Singapore. And
10:47
if you're gonna be going around, look us up will definitely
10:49
take you around.
10:49
Yes, it sounds like I'm going to have quite a few tour guides,
10:52
which is not a bad thing.
10:53
