I like these conversations very much, but this podcast pulls its punches. Menjivar seems to define "class" as one's ability to be able to afford nice things. There's lots of discussion about who deserves nice things, about how racism affects people's appreciation of nice things and race, and about passing as someone who knows a lot about nice things. What is missing is any discussion about power imbalance, and how America's class system works to maintain the status quo. There's no discussion, so far, of the political ramifications of class in America, like oppression, inequality, or entitlement. Defining class as having servants and really expensive cars, cosmetics, and clothes is just so superficial, and I keep waiting for this show to go deeper.
