At Joshua House, we believe coaching is an amazing platform that can be used to shape the next generation. Coaching with Purpose is designed to encourage and equip you to use your platform to make a transformational impact in your players lives.

As we head into 2016, it's important to take time to reflect on the past year.  Evaluating what has happened in the past (good or bad) is crucial for getting a pulse on your sports team and program.  Evaluation will also help you get fresh vision and set you up for success.

In this episode, host Theron Glenny shares 3 questions you can ask yourself to evaluate each area of your team and program.  He also shares a potential trap that can rob you of vision and focus.

Show notes:

Big picture: Evaluation sets you up for God to give you fresh vision for your players and coaches.  Without evaluation, you'll end up operating out of old and possibly worn out vision and direction.  Without evaluation, your coaches, team and program won't clearly see vision or have direction.  Proverbs 28:19 says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;or...Where there is no vision, the people perish.  Evaluate: to determine the significance, worth, or condition of usually by careful appraisal and study Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/evaluate Evaluation is like an assessment.  An assessment is an valuation of the business.  What is it worth?  There was effort and digging involved.  It wasn’t just looking at a few numbers on paper, it was making sure all the numbers lined up for taxation purposes.  We call this an audit these days.  Here’s the trap: Not writing down your findings.  Not recording them.  Habakkuk 2(NKJV)1 I will stand my watchAnd set myself on the rampart,And watch to see what He will say to me,And what I will answer when I am corrected.2 Then the Lord answered me and said:“Write the visionAnd make it plain on tablets,That he may run who reads it.3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.Though it tarries, wait for it;Because it will surely come,It will not tarry. How to evaluateI’m going to show you how to do a simple assessment that you can use at the end of your seasons and also during your season.  You can use it weekly.  It is very valuable.  I believe coaches do this, but in their head.  It is much more powerful if you put it on paper.  I can’t tell you how many times I come back to what I wrote down.  Here they are...1. What went well - what were your successes?2. What didn’t go so well - what were some failures?3. What would you differently next time - these will likely turn into goals and plans. Every program has parts.  Clarify the parts first…  Don’t make it too complicated. Examples: Offense, defense, practices, etc Team chemistry, coach/player relationships, ministry opportunities. Big picture: Evaluation sets you up for God to give you vision for your players and coaches.  Prov. 28:19Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;Where there is no vision, the people perish.  Another tip:  Have your staff do this. Have them evaluate too.  You’ll be able to see whether someone’s heart is in it because their evaluation will tell you.   A staff member that evaluates will also get vision.  You want your coaches to have vision. I had my assistant coach do an evaluation of a league he oversaw and I was blown away at the detail of his evaluation.
