After our last episode, Pillows and Soft Goods, we decided to dig deeper into how to choose a pillow that is right for you.

Unfortunately, many pillows and mattresses are made from synthetic materials like petroleum-based polyester or polyurethane foam.

Avoid nightmares about off-gassing volatile organic compounds, fire retardants, antibacterial protection and stain-resistant chemicals and finishes! Choose eco-friendly options.

To protect your health and the natural world, we suggest three options:

1. Watch for eco-labels/certifications

  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard)
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard
  • OEKO-TEX (STANDARD 100 certification for natural latex)
  • RDS (Responsible Down Standard)

2. Pick an Eco-Friendly pillow that works for you

  • Natural, organic rubber
  • Natural latex
  • Organic buckwheat (adults only)
  • Organic cotton
  • Organic wool
  • Kapok
  • Certified down
  • Vegan-friendly foam
  • Bamboo memory foam

3. Sheets and Pillowcases Matter: choose fabrics that are certified and organic

If you’re going to spend 8 hours a day sleeping on a pillow, why not invest in one that’s not only comfortable but safe. It’s one of the easiest investments you can make in your health.
