The First World War experiences of seventeen Canadian soldiers, linked to the present in a collection of their identity discs in France. The men all parted from Halifax in late November 1915, arriving in England in December. They did not all go to France together. Most served with one of two Siege Artillery Batteries, at various times from June of 1916. Two would be posted to the Royal Flying Corps, one became their battery's Sergeant Major, one was awarded the Military Medal at Vimy Ridge, two died in France- one of illness, the other of wounds. These seventeen also have a varied collection of disciplinary infractions and hospitalisations for social diseases which would make them an interesting study in any event, but one must wonder how all these discs have come together, when the last time all were together in the same unit was January 1916, and the first death occurred on 4 April 1917?Let's find out.
