Sudan death toll crosses 100, protesters say, and Sharma guides India to opening World Cup win.

Sudan protesters say death toll cross 100

Sudan’s protest organisers rejected the ruling military’s offer for talks after doctors said the death toll for a crackdown crossed 100.

Security forces moved in on Monday to brutally disperse a protest, demanding an end to military rule.

Rights groups said the paramilitaries thought to be behind the crackdown originate from Darfur conflict militias.

Cardinal Pell’s convictions should stand – prosecutors

Australian prosecutors argued in court that child sex convictions against Cardinal George Pell should not be overturned.

The main witness, a victim now in his 30s, is a compelling witness, prosecutors said.

Pell is the most senior Catholic cleric to be convicted of child sex abuse and was sentenced in March to six years in prison.

Raids on media trigger accusations of assault on press

Journalists could face jail for merely receiving classified information, Australian authorities and lawmakers said after raids on media houses.

State-funded ABC was raided by the police on Wednesday, a day after a raid on a News Corp editor’s house.

Police said the probe was about alleged crimes of leaking classified information but expanded it to include even receiving state secrets.

Saudis boosted missile programme with China help – report

US intelligence indicated that Saudi Arabia has significantly improved its ballistic missile programme with assistance from China.

President Trump’s administration did not make the intelligence available to key lawmakers, angering Democrats, CNN reported on Wednesday.

Earlier, a senator said the US gave two authorisations to its companies to share sensitive nuclear power information with Saudi Arabia.

Rohit century gives India winning start to World Cup

And finally,

Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten century as India got their Cricket World Cup campaign off to a solid start against South Africa.

South Africa elected to bat after winning the toss but posted a below-par 227 for nine.

The Indians, who are chasing their third World Cup title, condemned the South Africans to their third successive loss in the tournament.
