On sunday the 27th of march we welcomed Bolu Bablola & Eliza Anyangwe in De Nieuwe Liefde. This is an edited audiostream of the event.

Pop culture expert, bestselling author and self-named romcommoiseur Bolu Babalola talks to writer and editor Eliza Anyangwe about the important of African female storytellers as well as the genre of Black love stories as counternarratives, and the preservation of folktales and oral traditions. In her short story collection Love in Colour Bolu Babalola explores how the power of love has been expressed within a variety of cultures from around the world. “I pay homage to the textures of each original tale while also adapting them to fit a new, modern age. In doing this, I hope to draw out and excavate what these stories can teach us about ourselves and love itself.”– Bolu Babalola‘This book is about being seen in all your iterations, in every dynamic, brightly and in colour. It’s about the joy and hope that accompanies the celebration of that phenomenon. I hope that this book brings you joy.’

Bolu Babalola is a writer of books, scripts, culture pieces and retorts, a lover of love and self-coined “romcomoisseur”. Bolu writes stories of dynamic women with distinct voices who love and are loved audaciously, and is a big believer in women being both ‘beauty and the beast’. Her short story collection, LOVE IN COLOUR, was published in 2020, became a Times bestseller and was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year. Her debut novel, HONEY AND SPICE, will be published in July 2022.

Eliza Anyangwe joined CNN in February 2021 as editor of the award-winning global gender inequality project As Equals. She began her career working for international development and environmental NGOs but has spent over a decade in media, working at The Guardian, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and as managing director at member-funded journalism platform The Correspondent.
