Galina Rin interviews Sophy Jay.
The musical equivalent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: tunes about friends, monsters and romance, with a necessary touch of angst

After hearing Busted’s first album in 2002, Sophy pestered her parents for a guitar, which she finally got for her 12th birthday.  Inspired, she started attempting to write love songs not long after… with varying levels of success. She continued to grow on a steady diet of pop punk: Green Day, Simple Plan and Good Charlotte to name a few influences. By 2008, she was gigging heavily around the Medway area, appearing at many events run by the organisation, Training Them Live, with whom she enjoyed working closely.

Her first album Happy Endings & Fairytales was released in 2008: a catalogue of young teenage love and heartbreak. This was followed by her EP Tell Me A Story, released in 2010, which documented her evolution and maturity as a songwriter. Following a hiatus due to mental health issues, a battle she is very open about, she released her latest EP Underdog in August 2018.

In 2018 Sophy supported The Blockheads at The Booking Hall in Dover, took part in the Red Roar Fest - official partner of BBC Music’s Biggest Weekend - and performed on the Kent Sessions for BBC Radio Kent. Previously, she also performed at Under Siege, part of the Rochester castle garden concerts in 2010.

Currently, Sophy is promoting her EP Underdog. In September 2018, she moved away from Medway to attend university, and is now making her presence felt in the Canterbury music scene. She is still writing new material, which she hopes to share in the New Year.

Recorded sometime in Feb 2019 at The Unicorn, Camden.
