0:15

it's Anna. Just a quick note before we get

0:17

to our new episode. Earlier

0:19

this year, we did a series of

0:21

live national call-in shows centered around our

0:24

mental health. The series was

0:26

called Hold On, and it came about

0:28

largely because of how often we hear

0:30

from mental health providers in our community

0:32

of listeners. Counselors, social

0:34

workers, therapists, and more. They've

0:37

told us through the years that our podcast

0:39

has been a useful addition to the work

0:41

they do. We take

0:43

this as an enormous compliment, and

0:46

we wanted to make it even easier

0:49

for mental health professionals to share our

0:51

show with clients and patients. That's

0:54

why we created a new episode resource

0:56

guide called The Things We Need to

0:58

Talk About More. It's organized

1:00

around the recurring themes in

1:03

our interviews. Death, sex and

1:05

relationships, money, family relationships,

1:07

addiction, mental health, and

1:10

moving through life stages. You

1:12

can find this new episode

1:14

guide on our website at

1:17

deathsexmoney.org/guide, and you can also download

1:19

the guide as a PDF to make it easier to

1:21

share. Let us know what you think. We'd

1:24

love to hear from you at deathsexmoney

1:26

at wnyc.org. And

1:28

now, my conversation with one of my favorite

1:30

people to talk about mental health with, comedian

1:33

Maria Bamford. They'd

1:36

be like, we're just here to have a

1:38

good time. I am

1:40

not a good time. I

1:45

am an assignment from a therapist. I'm

1:49

some comedian some other comedians come

1:51

to see and go, huh? And

1:56

I can sell out a room in Portland

1:59

on a Tuesday. Maria

2:06

Bamford is

2:11

a comedian and actress. You

2:29

may know her from her many stand-up specials

2:31

or her Netflix show, Lady Dynamite.

2:34

I first interviewed Maria on the show back in

2:36

2020 and she has an

2:38

excellent new book out called Sure, I'll

2:40

Join Your Cult, a memoir of mental

2:43

illness and the quest to belong anywhere.

2:46

The book is honest, very

2:48

funny, and genuinely helpful. And

2:51

I got to talk to Maria all about it in

2:53

front of a live audience at City Arts

2:55

and Lectures in San Francisco earlier this

2:57

fall. Something you

2:59

say in this book is how full

3:01

disclosure you have found is

3:03

a cash cow. Yes, yes.

3:07

And then you... And a

3:09

compulsion. Compulsion. And you ask,

3:11

is this radical honesty or

3:14

narcissistic showboating? What

3:18

do you think? I think, well,

3:21

I would love to say

3:23

that it's a

3:25

real happy medium. But

3:28

yeah, I think it's

3:31

very... I've always liked

3:33

attention. I think... Oh

3:37

my gosh, who's the comedian? I

3:39

just saw John Mulaney in

3:41

one of his last premises. He says

3:43

his most recent specials. And

3:45

now if I can just get enough

3:47

attention, I'll be fine. I was like,

3:50

hmm. But I'd say,

3:52

yeah. So I think there's

3:54

something there. But

3:58

it's okay. It's okay. Well,

4:01

I want... It

4:03

is... I

4:05

think it is both ends, because it

4:08

is... because the gift of being able to hear what you're

4:10

disclosing is for

4:13

somebody who's secretly holding some shame. They

4:16

have somebody to look at and think

4:18

it's not just me. Yeah, like I

4:20

love... I love... um,

4:22

autobiographies, biographies, memoirs,

4:25

where it's like you get to hear all

4:28

the horrifying things that people have done.

4:30

I mean, it's just... When

4:33

I was trying to write this,

4:35

I kept reading biographies

4:37

of alcoholic depressive poets

4:39

going, they're

4:42

a monster. Like, just

4:45

monstrous. I

4:48

wonder how you can talk about it at this point in your

4:50

life. You must have different

4:53

coping mechanisms, but as

4:55

somebody who's inclined

4:57

to share, can

4:59

you just talk about, like, over the course of

5:01

your life what you've learned about how

5:04

it feels when you disclose something and

5:07

then you are not met with understanding?
