In this episode, we decoded: Mentorship

Today's topic is a topic that touched our lives in many ways. And that's mentorship.

Mentorship has never been clearly defined. I've been looking and searching and I've come up with thousands of definitions de depending on the person who's defining it.

But once we define it, we can talk about how to activate it. We don't have to find all the answers today in this space, but today we'll be discussing and highlighting mentorship from all perspectives. With that being said, here is a fact for you, 90% of people who are mentored when they're young grow to become mentors themselves.

There's a quote by sir Isaac Newton that says if I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. Now I'm a fan of Isaac Newton.

Okay. I'm sure most of us agree, but I kind of want to edit and revise that a little bit. You. Yes, you can reach for anything.

If you stand on the shoulders of giants. Now, with this in mind, we can understand two things.

One, you want to make sure that you are standing on the shoulders of giants so that you can reach for anything.

And two, you wanna make sure that you are a giant so that people can stand on your shoulders today.

Isaac Newton understood something that I think we need to be reminded of is that we are at our best when we rely on the wisdom and knowledge of those that have come before us. So when it comes to me, I ask this question to myself, and I want you to think about this while I'm saying my definition, what is mentorship?

Mentorship is to be influenced by individuals, ideals, and society. It comes in many different forms. It starts from the moment that you open your eyes to the world all the way until you close your eyes to this world. And I think many of you here today in this space probably agree that over the last few years there's been loads of research and reports that have been published about mentorship.

there have been dozens of lectures. Ted talks about the power of mentorship everywhere. There have been lots of surveys. Lots of people say we believe in mentorship, lots of stats over and over and over again, show that there are many leaders that say mentorship is important. So we all agree here today that mentorship is powerful.

There's so much to talk about the power of mentorship, but I think throughout my research, there's been a missing piece of the puzzle that I haven't quite gotten right yet, or that we haven't quite gotten right. Yet as a society, as a community, there is lots of talk in lectures about mentorship and the power of mentorship, but there are not a lot of people teaching us how to be great mentors and mentees.

And this is why I opened this space for this discussion today, we will try and I'll say we try, because we won't be able to do it in one space. We will try to decode what is a mentor and what makes a great mentor. How did our mentors shape us? And also what do you do if someone is attributing your success as a result of their mentorship, but they have not mentored you.

So with that being said, I'm your host Jia or Jia El Hassan. And I'm a marketing specialist. I dabbled in a lot of disciplines and this topic has been the one question that puzzled me for years....
