Is it worth ranking things anymore? For users to decide on the best ones? This means spending more time doing research before arriving at wisdom. Social media platforms don't focus on rankings. Chatbots don't focus on rankings. Why should search engines?

Is it worth ranking results anymore?

The expectations of search results have changed. They've changed to users expecting answers to their queries, not results.

The use cases of search have fuelled this change. Someone searching for something whilst driving isn't really interested in scrolling through a list of sites to find the answer to their question. They want the answer. They expect the answer.

AI chatbots provide answers. These platforms seem to be growing in popularity and are further fuelling the expectations that users have of search platforms.

The way users search is also changing. Prompting for answers (not results) is becoming the norm. If one isn't satisfied with the answer they seek, they optimise their prompts and/or use a different platform. The collective intelligence of searchers has grown. So why should search platforms rank results rather than provide a satisfactory answer? THE satisfactory answer?
