Welcome , dear listener , to whatever

0:15

this is currently untitled and

0:17

, going by the code name , you never get those

0:19

minutes back . 5 video

0:22

game foundations that have crumbled

0:24

away . As video games and

0:26

the technology associated with them has

0:28

evolved beyond any expectations

0:31

. To harbour as a wide eyed video

0:33

game loving kid , we have witnessed the demise

0:35

of numerous aspects from our beloved hobby

0:37

. Elements and hardware that seemed irreplaceable

0:40

, now thrown to the wind to never be

0:42

seen again . The constant push for new leaps

0:45

in graphical prowess , scope of world

0:47

building and an ever more intuitive online

0:49

universe has sent some of gaming's seemingly

0:52

immovable objects off to an early retirement

0:54

. What follows is a little joint

0:56

down memory lane as we remember those

0:58

fallen warriors of video game lore

1:00

and legend , the seeming rock

1:02

solid foundations of a growing global

1:05

phenomenon that crumbled to dust beneath the

1:07

weight of advancing technology . Anyone

1:09

for joysticks ? The Land Party

1:12

. If there is one aspect from

1:14

gaming culture that I will always lament

1:16

the loss of , it's the fabled land

1:18

party . Long nights of gathered

1:20

friends , consoles , old

1:22

, fat , big back TV sets , wires

1:25

strung across alcohol soap

1:27

carpets or fizzy pop soap

1:29

carpets , depending on the age greasy

1:32

snacks , made controllers and the loud

1:34

and bloody , hilarious embracing

1:36

of pure gaming indulgence . It

1:39

was magic . At a time when the online

1:41

beasts of Xbox Live and

1:43

the Playstation Network had yet to hatch , the

1:46

only real way a group of friends could play

1:48

together was to drag all their shit

1:50

to a willing victims previously pristine

1:52

living room and turn it into a scene

1:54

resembling apocalypse . Now the

1:57

typical land setup consisted of two or

1:59

more consoles in our case , this

2:01

was the old and remarkably heavy

2:03

original Xbox . Add

2:06

in a couple of those fat old TV sets

2:08

, one of which was usually perched precariously

2:10

on a plastic lawn chair a handful of

2:12

controllers , including some of those dodgy

2:15

cheapo ones from the local discount store

2:17

that had less control than a vegan trying

2:19

not to tell you they're a vegan cheap alcohol

2:21

, crispy snacks and wires

2:23

oh my god , so many

2:26

wires . The setup itself

2:28

was an OCD sufferer's nightmare , but

2:30

for anyone with a love of social gaming , it

2:32

was pure heaven and the only

2:34

real option . The game of choice back in the day

2:36

was generally Halo 2 , occasionally

2:38

Tiger Woods . The intense battles that played

2:40

out in standard definition as friend

2:42

fought friend across a wonderfully brutal

2:45

battlefield will live long in my memory . The

2:47

arguments fun accusations

2:49

about watching each other's screens , about

2:51

having the shitty controller and about

2:53

the game just basically being bullshit

2:55

were wonderful and hilarious

2:58

in equal measure . Evening became night

3:00

and night rolled sleepily into the light

3:02

of a new day , whilst under the glow of

3:04

burning light bulbs and jaggy graphics , and

3:06

merry band fought on blady eyed

3:08

and a little drunk . Then the sands

3:11

of time quickly shifted and this

3:13

vision was buried beneath the dust

3:15

. The Land Party has all but gone

3:17

with the online gaming revolution . In fact

3:20

, for myself , has reached

3:22

extinction . Yet , despite the new shape

3:24

of multiplayer gaming , I will always

3:26

believe the video game world is

3:28

a little bit grayer and a little less friendly

3:30

for the demise of the Land Party . I'm

3:33

always happy to embrace new technological leaps

3:35

, but there are also things I will forever

3:37

miss . On the plus side , my

3:39

carpets have never been cleaner . The

3:41

joystick Not just the joystick

3:44

, the Kempston joystick . I have

3:46

no idea why this is stuck so vividly

3:48

in my mind when I barely remember

3:50

the make of any other electronic or technological

3:53

device I've encountered over the years , but there was

3:55

something about . The old Kempston Joysticks

3:58

, of course , are still knocking about and great

4:00

euphemism still but where once they

4:02

were the key to unlocking other worlds , now

4:04

, at least in my own world , they have gone

4:06

the way of the dinosaur . However

4:08

, I do still miss them . And dinosaurs

4:11

For a kid . These controllers were

4:13

magical . They were a sign that the arcades were

4:15

entering the home , and this was immensely

4:17

exciting . The joy from four

4:19

little suction cups on the base to hold

4:21

them in place when they actually got frantic , this

4:23

really sounds dodgy . A couple of beautiful

4:25

, bright red buttons that simply screamed press

4:28

me A trigger right for the pulling

4:30

on the stick itself and , in some cases , another

4:32

red beauty of a button sat on top . The thing

4:34

was incredible . The joystick was about the most

4:36

apt Bully named device I ever knew

4:38

. It felt as though we were in the cockpit with a joystick

4:41

. Oh god , here we go again . It was real

4:43

and it was perfect for the escapist mind

4:45

. It was a bit shit , though , for Daily Tom's as

4:47

the calf one , but that's not worth worrying about now . Instead

4:50

, let's remember the good days when frantic

4:52

wiggling didn't detach the finger from its suction

4:54

and grip and send you flying from your seat in

4:56

a blur of intense motion and shock . I

4:59

can't put this out on a podcast . I no longer

5:01

miss the joystick , however . The modern day equivalent

5:03

is a thing of beauty and offers more control over

5:06

these games than the old faithful could ever muster

5:08

, but there was a moment in time where these

5:10

things were the pinnacle of gaming power

5:12

. I grew up playing games on a joystick and

5:14

it seemed like the most natural thing in the world , but

5:17

, like so many other elements of gaming history , the idea

5:19

now seems almost alien

5:21

to me , although there will always be that

5:23

time when this coolest of gaming controllers had the aliens

5:26

running for their lives . Physical

5:28

copies of games . Now

5:30

, I know this is a long way from being a thing of the past currently

5:32

, but the ground is definitely shifting

5:34

. I personally bought a PS5 Digital

5:36

and Xbox Series S , neither of which

5:39

can take a disc . I originally approached

5:41

the idea to deliver games straight

5:43

to the hard drive of the console with deep skepticism

5:45

. I loved my games collection

5:47

. The box is stacked high and wide on the shelves

5:50

, emphasising just how serious I was

5:52

about playing video games . I enjoyed

5:54

the tactile nature of physical games , the artwork

5:57

, the shine on the disc and the

5:59

new game smell . There was , and still

6:01

is , something cool about having games in

6:03

a physical state rather than the digital one . However

6:05

, my viewpoint has altered considerably

6:08

and I can only base my changing views

6:10

on my own goddamn laziness . As

6:12

great as a physical game collection is , it is

6:14

nothing when compared to being melted deep

6:16

into the sofa , scrolling through

6:18

a digital collection , making

6:20

decisions about what to play without so much as

6:22

moving the air in front of us . It is

6:24

bloody lovely . I've reached a

6:26

point where I will sometimes not even bother playing

6:29

a game because it would mean going to the shelf to grab

6:31

the disc . And who wants to deal with

6:33

that ? Digital downloaded games

6:35

are superb . The fact that we now have

6:37

to install games from discs to play them anyway means

6:39

arguments regarding hard drive space have

6:41

become redundant and the reason

6:43

to pick up physical copies of games is dwindling

6:46

further still to the point . I personally

6:48

cannot remember when I last bought a physical game , but

6:51

despite that , I will

6:53

still always browse these games without

6:55

walking to a game shop or wander by , and

6:58

I will always remember with fondness the mass

7:00

ranks of my Xbox 360 and PS3

7:03

collection towering over everyone

7:05

who entered our home . I will also endeavour

7:07

to seek out a candle that comes with new games

7:10

sent . That is my holy

7:12

grail . Multi console wars

7:14

. The battlefield of the console wars

7:16

is ridiculous and littered with

7:18

the carcasses of numerous pretenders to the throne

7:21

. All marched in on a fanfare of expectation

7:23

and hope before succumbing , usually

7:25

, to the fact they had forgotten to populate their all

7:27

conquering aspirations with anything resembling

7:30

an army of games . For a kid growing up when

7:32

video games were becoming ever more powerful

7:34

media platform in the home , it was an exciting time

7:36

. The console wars , or the computer

7:38

wars as they began , were not the two horse

7:41

race we know today , where now we

7:43

have Microsoft and Sony

7:45

fighting like gladiators

7:47

in the arena . Nintendo

7:49

sat back like some Roman emperor eating grapes

7:51

, happy with their lot in life . Once upon a time

7:54

we were thrown outlandish new tribes

7:56

marching into the console wars in the

7:58

misguided belief they could topple the giants

8:01

. Spectrum , amstrad

8:03

, commodore and Dragon marched

8:05

against one another at one point , although , as

8:08

I remember , dragon realised they had

8:10

left the gas on and beat a hasty retreat . The

8:12

kids took sides and pledged allegiance

8:14

to the flag of whichever computer their parents

8:16

had bought . And then

8:18

came the consoles Atari , nintendo

8:21

, sega , even Philips challenged

8:23

for the top spot . And again , as

8:25

a kid , it was amazing . There was

8:27

nothing quite like the excitement of pouring through the

8:29

latest gaming magazines gaming magazines

8:31

, remember them and finding images and specs

8:34

of a newly touted entrance in the console struggle

8:36

the Atari Jaguar facing off against

8:38

the Super Nintendo and the Mega Drive

8:40

, the Sega Dreamcast , looking like a real contender

8:43

, like Sam and Frodo on the

8:45

way to destroy the powers of darkness , only

8:47

to have been crushed under the ever increasing

8:49

power wielded by Sony , sauron

8:52

and their PlayStation . And then the arrival

8:54

of the super power financial army

8:56

that was Microsoft , to prove a

8:58

genuine threat to Sony's newfound dominance

9:01

, under the death of Sega and the retreat of

9:03

Nintendo to that place up in

9:05

the gods . Watching the action , the whole

9:07

thing has become something of a blur

9:09

for me . Now I only know that I did want

9:11

a Philips 3DO and I wanted an Atari

9:13

Jaguar and the Sega Mega CD

9:16

and all the other bits that went on top of a Mega

9:18

Drive to make it look like it had been created in Scooby-Doo's

9:20

kitchen , and the fact that everyone was pushing everyone

9:23

else to go further with their tech was

9:25

joyful for the bystander . Now we

9:27

don't really have a console war anymore . Sony and

9:29

Microsoft have their own spaces to play and fight

9:31

and by and large they are near identical

9:33

. Nintendo are off doing

9:35

their own thing . The chances of anyone being brave

9:38

or foolish enough to enter the fray

9:40

with a new console that can be taken seriously

9:43

at least seems beyond the realms of possibility

9:45

, but for a while it was

9:47

the greatest war that ever raged

9:49

, pointless of course , but

9:52

pretty damn great all the same . Memory

9:54

cards are the memory

9:56

card . Here we have a little slice of tech

9:59

that will confuse young gamers in a way

10:01

that a cassette confuses young music

10:03

fans . Yet not long ago , these

10:05

little square , unassuming bits

10:07

of plastic were absolutely crucial

10:09

in getting anything out of your games

10:11

, or at least in not having to go and do the same

10:13

goddamn section of a game every time

10:15

you booted up the console and using the memory

10:18

card . Wow , this was as strategic

10:20

as any of the games that populated the era

10:22

. What to keep , what to remove , how

10:24

best to utilise the limited number of memory

10:26

blocks was a constant conundrum . Throw

10:28

two or three cards into the mix . It was time to form

10:30

Mensa . I will always remember the joy

10:33

I felt when hearing the original Xbox

10:35

would ship with a built in hard drive . I

10:37

believe it was mere 80 gig , but

10:39

at the time that felt as big as

10:41

the universe . Suddenly , the walls

10:43

of small memory card storage lost

10:46

memory cards , corrupted data on

10:48

memory cards was disappearing into

10:50

the distance . The portable storage solution

10:52

, and only solution if you plan to actually finish

10:54

any of your games was breathing its last

10:57

, and I for one was

10:59

happy to usher it into the junkyard

11:01

in the sky . It seems a lifetime

11:03

away now that we were so reliant on such storage

11:05

options , but because of the unrelated pace

11:07

of technology , it was really only a

11:09

few console generations ago . The kids

11:11

today don't know the bone , do they ? Walkie

11:14

sobs .
