Daniel Burka of Milk and Marc Hemeon of Google's YouTube join the DesignChat conversation. Here's some of the things we talked about:On internet haters ripping on design you've done: Marc - this is the night of Khoi Vin, had a great blog post when someone 're-designed' the New York Times, his response was that these reactions were from people who didn't know the whole story, didn't have the context, and didn't know the things we had to deal with. Marc: I think its a good idea for a Designer to try and get fired every day. I think we write the future. Marc on getting to interact with people via social media: People are awesome. Daniel on how to self promote: Hang out with Kevin Rose more. Marc and Daniel talk briefly about their time at Digg.com where Daniel actually interviewed Marc for his position. Daniel on reading people as he interviews them: its not something as robotic as a personality test. I can tell a lot about a person from their code and their book. Marc on being an interactive designer without knowing any code: I'd have a lot more mercy if learning html and css was hard. Marc on developers learning how to design: It takes practice, thats how anyone learns anything. Go copy things to learn how to build them. Obviously spin it a little, don't totally rip it. If you're a developer, this is where you can start. And this is where a million designers start, they see a design they love, hell just go look at dribble. You see someone post something rad, next thing you know you have 4 million cousins and incantations of someones Dribble and you can see how this works. Artists do this all the time, they take a photo and if they want to learn how to draw a tree they'll take a picture of a tree and draw the exact tree. This is how they learn. But don't copy, that's bad.Daniel on the difference between creating an iOS app and a web app: Its a much more focused problem and limited problem. I'll be careful answering this because its not like I've built a ton of iOS apps. I don't code it myself, because I don't know enough C to code as fast as the other developers. I mock things up in html and CSS and show them, getting them to replicate the kind of behaviors I'm expecting. Apps they're inspired by right now:Daniel: Listery - It's these European guys who are making Listery and its this really - so I've used a bunch of 'To Do' apps - its basically just a bunch of to do lists, but most of them are way over-thought and they, people are unwilling to make something that is just simple. And these guys stayed focused - its just a few basic features were ballsy enough to stick with those basic features. I think its a really well designed app and they're doing some really nice iterative improvements to it. Marc: I have silly things - this is the one I've been playing with the most. Songify - I can tap to record a song - here, lets do this: (Sings) Oh yeah, doin' DesignChat, its so raaad. (It plays back auto tuned with a beat behind it) So anyway, you can pick what song you'd like to have songified, and it just loops through and thats it man. You can do any song you want, like double rainbow - this is from the folks, the Gregory Bros. that do "Hide yo' kids, hide yo' wife."
