I love how the story is narrated by the characters. The banter they have while they narrating what has happened to them just makes them even more likeable.
DesperadoThat's so amazing to hear! This aspect of the narration was one I had the most doubts about, I'm so relieved it's working! :D
I'm halfway in love with Desperado already. It's an urban fantasy series about three (or maybe four) people, who in their hours of need, are saved and chosen to be agents of the old gods in a war against crusaders of the Christian faith. Elio is the last survivor of an Aztec village from Mexico, Shinji is a death god from Japan, and Talia sold her soul to Baron Samedi from Haiti. It's like American Gods meets the X-Men and I am hooked.
DesperadoThank you so much for taking the time to write this, kind words are what keeps us going
Plainly put, this show rocks and I love it. It’s an urban fantasy about three individuals who are each saved in their hour of greatest need by three different Old Gods of Death to fight (and kill) God and his crusaders on Earth. And at least one of them has a time limit. Frickin’. AWESOME. The show starts off as one extended single-speaker narration from Elio, the sole survivor of an attack by crusaders on his village in Mexico, that is almost hypnotically gripping right from the start, but as we get into future episodes, we layer in our new protagonists--Shinji, from Japan, and Talia, from Haiti--and they begin to tell the story together, weaving in and out of a more classical narration to comment on scenes, jump in to reenact moments, or just stop to bicker with a truly lovely chemistry. These are all characters that are so clear, so lovable, so funny and strong and vulnerable in their own ways, and their interplay never ceases to be entertaining, no matter what situations they find themselves in. Plus, their respective powers (Elio can create a basically impenetrable shield, but it’s of HIS OWN BLOOD) are great and always come at a cost. Come for the adventure and the killing-God-of-it-all, stay for the found family/ragtag bunch of misfits and the vibes.
The "what if"s this podcast dives into are amazing, great combinations of all the elements it praises, diverse and with charming narrator-each in their own amazing way.
This podcast really hits in all the right places. Grand story arc, with easy light-hearted comedy. Genuine dialogue, great voice acting and immersive sound design
It's just a genuinely fun show. The characters are great and the interactions are genuine. And the drama is fantastic.
DesperadoThank you so much!!!
6 episodes, I legitimately love the chemistry and the world building is phenomenal.
Waited my whole life for this podcast, everything about it is excellent. I care SO MUCH about all the characters. The acting is superb.
Caro Mincks basically told me: "Wait, you haven't listened to Desperado yet?" so I had to, in the moment. I fell in love with Elio, Shinji and Talia and the universe and lore is sO INCREDIBLE, the VAs and the writing is just perfect, the sOUNDSCAPE. This was God-sent (hah) and I absolutely adore it!
I've had one of the most fun weekends in a while thanks to this podcast! The soundscaping was captivating and l am in love with each character at least a little bit. Their banter is wonderful and so fun to listen to, especially if the moment is generally a little more dark and gets lightened up by someone going "wait, you don't know what a ukulele is?". The worldbuilding is also extremely interesting!! I can't wait for season 2 and reading that it's already written is great news! There's so much more to explore in this world and l can't wait to dive back in
Explores faith, friendship, and the effects of colonialism. The world building here is interesting in its incorporation of different cultures and how those cultures influence the protagonists. The descriptions given through narration are great; the action scenes are clear and engaging in how the sound effects are edited. I enjoyed following the story. It took me a little while to get used to the narration style, which is the three main characters retelling their story to each other and providing commentary, but their banter is great in the dialogue and performances.
Such a cool show
Had a couple of false starts with this but when it got going hooooo-boy I'm so glad I stuck it out because this was an absolute gem of a story. The concept is super interesting and explores some pretty neat ideas, the writing is engaging, the cast chemistry is phenomenal, and the banter makes my heart so happy. This is a wonderfully charming podcast and I dearly hope to hear season two in the not too distant future.
I wasn't expecting the amazing storytelling combined with real drama and some extremely well placed humor.
great show, all said before.but....SOUND LEVELS ARE DANGEROUSLY WIDE.it goes from muttering you can bearly hear to gunshots yelling and explotions that shake the car and ring ear drums.seriously... lows too low, highs way too high.
ensemble cast urban fantasy of my dreams
There's so much love & humor in this show, which is not how you'd expect to start a review about blood magic & demons but it's true !! Desperado has you fall in love with every character, for better or for worse, but when your guard is down, that's when it attacks... gods, I can't recommend this show more !!! Subscribe today pleaseee
What an excellent podcast, the characters, the music, the sounds, the worldbuilding - all excellent! So many absolutely unhinged women you won't ever need any other podcast, really (extremely relevant to my interests and maybe yours). There's one normal woman too. But jokes aside, I fell in love instantly, definitely check this one out!
I was absolutely blown away by this story! The premise and world building is so cool and each character feels like a real person despite their powers. I love stories about friendship and it’s so refreshing to have a show where the leads don’t have romantic connections with each other! The writing is equal parts heart-wrenching and hilarious and I couldn’t stop listening once I’d started - the only thing I would change is to have started listening sooner! If a season 3 is ever on the cards, I’ll be here waiting to listen!!
