0:38
the morning of January 25th, 2019, Liz Barraza, a 29-year-old
0:40
beloved wife and daughter, set
0:45
up a garage sale in the driveway of her
0:47
Tom Ball, Texas, home. Just
0:50
before 7 a.m., a suspect
0:52
driving a dark, Nissan Frontier truck
0:54
parked across the street, exited
0:57
the vehicle, and swiftly approached Liz
0:59
in the driveway. The
1:01
suspect then shot Liz four times before
1:03
sprinting back to the truck and fleeing
1:05
the scene. Despite a
1:08
surveillance camera capturing the entire incident,
1:10
the police have yet to identify the suspect.
1:13
It's been just over five years since Liz
1:15
was killed, and investigators are still
1:18
searching for the person responsible. Hey,
1:57
everyone. Welcome back to Detective Perspective. My name
1:59
is Derek. I'm a licensed
2:01
private investigator and former police detective.
2:04
Each week I'll be covering an unsolved case and story
2:06
format. I'll then give you my perspective
2:08
on the investigation and provide contact information
2:11
for the individuals or organizations connected to
2:13
the case so that if you have
2:15
any tips, you can contact them
2:17
directly and maybe you can help solve a case.
2:20
If you're someone who's interested in true
2:22
crime, specifically unsolved cases, and
2:24
you would like to hear my opinion on those investigations,
2:27
please consider subscribing whether you're watching
2:29
right now on YouTube or listening
2:32
on Apple Podcasts or Spotify or
2:34
whatever platform you use. Okay, you
2:36
just heard the teaser for Liz
2:38
Barraza. It's a
2:40
pretty self-explanatory opening. There's
2:44
really not too much, I guess,
2:46
like hidden traps to this one. There
2:48
is a mystery, obviously. That's why we're covering it.
2:51
I think the uniqueness of this case
2:53
in particular compared to our other cases
2:55
that we've covered on detective
2:57
perspective is the fact that we
3:00
have the entire crime caught on film. This
3:02
is the first time we really have this.
3:04
And not only do we have it, but
3:07
we have it from multiple angles, although
3:09
one angle you can't see much,
3:11
but you can hear a lot. And
3:14
we're going to play both of those clips tonight for you.
3:17
Discretion, the first one specifically,
3:19
you can see the murder, although it's in the
3:21
distance. For those of
3:23
you who may be sensitive to that, just a little
3:25
bit of a warning. And I'll give you it again
3:27
as we go through the episode. But we're not the
3:30
first ones to cover this case. I know Kendall Rae
3:32
has covered it. I believe
3:34
Investigation Discovery has covered it as
3:36
well. So really with this
3:38
one, what we're trying to do is just give
3:40
some more exposure to a case that you
3:42
would think would be solved by this point. But we've
3:45
talked a lot about it. I'm giving you some of
3:47
the things to come. Let's not
3:49
waste any more time. Let's dive right into the case.
3:52
Elizabeth Marie Nellie, known as Liz, was born on
3:54
June 26, 1989 to Bob and Rosemary. Her
4:00
parents described her as someone who always saw the
4:02
best in people. Liz was
4:04
generous, thoughtful, and she always
4:06
aimed to make a positive impact on others. After
4:09
graduating from high school in 2008, Liz
4:12
attended Sam Houston State University. During
4:15
her time there, Liz met and started
4:17
dating Sergio Barraza. They
4:19
connected over their shared passion for Harry Potter
4:21
and Star Wars, as well as their love
4:24
for creating costumes. In
4:27
2012, Liz graduated from Sam
4:29
Houston State University with a bachelor's degree
4:31
in psychology. Less than
4:33
two years later, on February 1, 2014, Liz and Sergio
4:35
married. Liz
4:39
went on to work for the Rosen Group as
4:41
a data reporter while Sergio worked for his father
4:43
as a crew chief installing flooring. Liz
4:46
and Sergio were also members of the 501st
4:48
Legion, a group of volunteers who dressed
4:50
up in costumes from Star Wars and
4:53
would visit children in hospitals in the Houston
4:55
area. In
4:57
2016, the couple purchased a home in the 8600
5:00
block of Cedar Walk Drive. The
5:02
house was in the Princeton Place subdivision
5:04
located in Tombaugh, a suburb of Houston.
5:08
Neighbors described Liz and Sergio as friendly
5:10
and welcoming people who always said hi.
5:13
By the time early 2019 rolled around,
5:16
Liz and Sergio were preparing to celebrate
5:18
their fifth wedding anniversary. According
5:20
to Who Killed Liz Barraza, a website
5:22
run by Liz's parents, the
5:24
couple planned a trip to Orlando to celebrate. They
5:27
were supposed to leave on Sunday, January 27. On
5:32
Thursday, January 24, Liz
5:34
spontaneously decided to host a garage sale
5:36
to raise extra money for souvenirs on
5:38
their trip. The sale was
5:40
scheduled for Friday the 25th and
5:42
Saturday the 26th. On
5:45
Thursday evening, Sergio and Liz placed a few
5:47
garage sale signs in the neighborhood. They
5:50
didn't advertise the sale on social media but they
5:52
did tell a few friends and family. Liz
5:55
also called her job to take Friday off
5:57
while Sergio still had plans to work. On
6:00
Friday, the 25th, at around 6.10 a.m.,
6:03
Liz drove to the local Starbucks to get a coffee.
6:06
Less than 10 minutes later, she returned home and
6:08
began setting up for the garage sale with Sergio.
6:12
Then just after 6.45 a.m., Sergio
6:14
left for work, and Liz
6:16
continued getting ready for the sale. At
6:18
6.53 a.m., a neighbor
6:21
across the street called 911, reporting
6:23
four gunshots and a dark-colored Nissan
6:25
Frontier leaving the Barraza house. While
6:28
still on the call, the neighbor mentioned the
6:31
Frontier now driving back by the house. Five
6:34
minutes later, first responders arrived.
6:37
Officers secured the scene while EMS called for
6:39
a life flight. After the
6:41
helicopter arrived, Liz was airlifted to
6:43
the hospital in very critical condition.
6:46
Officers entered Liz's house to clear and secure
6:49
it. They didn't find anyone inside, but
6:51
they did trigger an alarm Liz had set
6:53
to alert her in case the door was
6:55
opened. At that moment, Liz's
6:57
parents were notified by the alarm company
6:59
about the triggered alarm. After
7:02
calling Liz and getting no response, they hurried
7:04
to her home, arriving just after 7.30 a.m.
7:08
Upon discovering that Liz had been shot and taken
7:10
to the hospital, Rosemary and Bob
7:12
went to see their daughter, who was eventually
7:14
placed on life support. Meanwhile,
7:17
Sergio also received the alarm
7:19
notification. He checked his
7:21
ring doorbell live feed and noticed police tape
7:24
and officers. Sergio then started
7:26
going through the safe footage to see if he
7:28
could figure out what was going on. He
7:30
found a video capturing Liz screaming as
7:32
gunshots rang out. Now Sergio
7:34
could only hear what was going on because
7:37
the camera angle prevented him from seeing the
7:39
events. He immediately rushed home.
7:42
When Sergio arrived, he was detained by
7:44
law enforcement for questioning. He
7:46
explained that he left the house just after 6.45 a.m. and went to
7:49
work. He also showed the
7:52
police the ring doorbell footage of the
7:54
gunshots and Liz screaming. While the actual
7:56
shooting wasn't captured, the video told police
7:58
that at 6.52. At
8:00
2 a.m., Liz said good morning to someone
8:02
who had likely approached her in the driveway.
8:05
For the next six or so seconds, nothing
8:07
else can be heard until three quick shots ring
8:09
out and Liz screams multiple times.
8:12
A few seconds pass and another shot rings
8:15
out. The screaming stops and
8:17
seconds later a dark-colored Nissan Frontier speeds
8:20
in. After Sergio
8:22
was released from questioning, he and his mom
8:24
went to the hospital. The
8:26
police continued processing the scene. They didn't
8:28
find any murder weapon or spent shell
8:31
casings, leading police to theorize that the
8:33
killer used a revolver to avoid leaving
8:35
evidence. The police were able
8:37
to recover one round that was embedded in
8:39
the house. They later told
8:42
Investigation Discovery that it was a small
8:44
to medium-sized caliber, possibly a 380. The
8:47
police further noticed that the killer didn't steal a cash
8:49
box with $100 inside, which
8:52
meant that robbery was most likely not the
8:54
motive for Liz's murder. The
8:56
police then started canvassing the neighborhood,
8:58
hoping to find someone who witnessed
9:01
the shooting. They didn't find anyone who saw
9:03
the actual shooting, but they did learn
9:05
that the neighbor across the street had a security
9:07
camera pointed right at the Barraza home. The
9:10
police immediately retrieved the footage and were able to
9:12
locate a video of the shooting, which
9:14
showed a Nissan Frontier park across the street from
9:16
the Barraza home at 6.52 a.m. The
9:20
killer left the car running and exited the
9:22
driver's side door. They walked
9:24
in front of the car's headlights and
9:26
quickly went up to Liz, who was setting up things
9:28
for the garage sale in the driveway. Now,
9:31
I'm going to play the video for you of the shooting,
9:34
and as I said in the opening, it's
9:37
blurry, I wish it wasn't. You
9:39
can definitely see the shooting, although it's
9:41
in the distance, so just to warn
9:43
you, it could be considered graphic to
9:45
some. There is no audio
9:47
for this clip, so if you're listening on audio,
9:49
I do apologize, you may have a
9:52
minute or two of blank sound, or maybe I
9:54
can have Shannon cut that out for the audio
9:56
version, but for the video version, we're going to
9:58
play that clip now. When

11:01
due to the video's quality, the police couldn't make
11:03
out a clear description of the killer. However,
11:05
they noticed that the suspect was wearing
11:07
knee-high light colored boots, possibly a moo
11:10
moo dress, a long jacket or
11:12
robe, and maybe a wig. The
11:14
killer's gender wasn't certain, but
11:16
it was evident they were wearing a disguise. After
11:19
the killer approached Liz in the driveway, they pulled
11:21
out a gun. Liz flinched
11:23
and stepped back. The killer
11:26
spoke to her for about six seconds, but
11:28
unfortunately the exact words are unknown. Then
11:31
three quick shots were fired. After
11:34
Liz collapsed, the suspect stood over her
11:36
and fired a fourth shot point blank.
11:39
An autopsy later revealed that the first shot went
11:41
through the side of Liz's neck, exiting
11:44
and hitting the house. The next
11:46
two shots were in her chest and the
11:48
final shot was in her face. After
11:51
shooting Liz four times, the killer sprinted back
11:54
to their Nissan Frontier truck and drove off.
11:57
The entire incident lasted about 30
11:59
seconds. Liz's murder
12:01
had been very calculated and cold-blooded. It
12:04
was obvious from the video that she had been targeted.
12:07
The police later told Investigation Discovery that they
12:09
were struck by how brazen the murder was.
12:12
The killer had to know that there was a chance someone
12:14
could have witnessed the shooting. It was
12:16
almost 7 AM on a weekday, meaning people in
12:19
the neighborhood could have been leaving for work. The
12:22
police reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding areas
12:24
and they were able to put together a
12:26
more detailed timeline of the Nissan Frontier's movements.
12:29
At approximately 2 AM on January 25,
12:31
the Nissan Frontier drove
12:33
by Liz's home, leaving police to believe that
12:35
the killer could have been casing the house.
12:38
On the morning of the incident at
12:40
6.47 AM, the Frontier pulled
12:42
into the Barrazas neighborhood and drove into
12:45
the Gardard School parking lot. One
12:47
minute later, the truck left the school parking lot
12:50
and drove to a different street. At
12:52
that exact time, Sergio left home to go
12:54
to work. Just three
12:56
minutes later, at 6.51 AM, the
12:59
Nissan Frontier drove toward the Barraza home.
13:02
KPRC2 reported that due to the Frontier
13:04
moving so quickly after Sergio left the
13:07
house, the police theorized that the killer
13:09
was waiting for Sergio to leave. This
13:11
also meant that the killer would have had to
13:13
have known what kind of car Sergio was driving.
13:16
Furthermore, the killer had to know that Liz
13:18
was going to be home alone instead of on
13:20
her way to work like she normally would be
13:22
doing on a Friday morning. At
13:25
6.52 AM, the truck did a three-point
13:27
turn on the Barrazas street before parking
13:29
across the Barraza home. The
13:31
killer exited the truck, went to
13:33
the driveway, shot Liz, and then got back
13:36
into the truck and took off. Now,
13:38
here's the interesting thing. At
13:41
6.55 AM, the truck exited the
13:43
subdivision but then did a
13:45
U-turn to re-enter the neighborhood and drove
13:47
back by Liz's house. Now,
13:49
based on this move, the police believed the
13:51
killer wanted to make sure that Liz
13:53
was dead. One detective later
13:56
said, quote, I feel they
13:58
contacted somebody and said, hey, The
14:00
job's done. And then that person said,
14:02
are you sure? And they turned around
14:04
and drove by the scene one more time. The
14:07
video of the shooting and the truck
14:09
traveling around the neighborhood was released almost
14:11
immediately to the public in the hopes
14:13
that someone could help identify the suspect
14:15
or the truck. The lead
14:17
detective later told investigation discovery that he thought
14:19
they'd have the case solved by the end
14:22
of the day. But unfortunately,
14:24
that wasn't the case. Now,
14:26
while the police continued their investigation, Liz's
14:28
family was by her side at the
14:30
hospital. On Saturday,
14:33
January 26th, Elizabeth
14:35
Barraza was pronounced dead. Now,
14:37
I think it's important to note that Liz had chosen
14:39
to be an organ donor. And as a result, her
14:42
heart, liver, both kidneys and corneas
14:44
were donated. She ended
14:47
up saving four lives and gave another the
14:49
gift of sight. Now, as
14:51
the family began planning Liz's funeral, the
14:53
police tried identifying the killer's truck, which
14:55
had already been identified as a dark colored 2013 to 2019
14:58
Nissan Frontier Pro 4x model with four doors and a crew
15:00
cab. The
15:06
police looked at hundreds of vehicles that matched the
15:08
truck, but they didn't have any luck
15:10
identifying the one scene on the videos. The
15:13
police eventually asked Sergio and Liz's parents
15:15
to watch the surveillance footage they had
15:17
obtained. Bob said hearing
15:20
Liz say good morning to the killer told
15:22
him that she didn't know them, she probably
15:24
assumed they were there for the garage sale
15:26
until she saw the gun. Rosemary
15:29
said that seeing Liz step back after she saw the
15:31
gun was the worst part of the video. She
15:34
knew that Liz was afraid at that moment and
15:36
it destroyed Rosemary to see her daughter like that.
15:39
And unfortunately, Liz's parents and Sergio did
15:42
not recognize the killer or the truck
15:44
in the video. On
15:46
February 6th, Crimestoppers of Houston hosted a
15:48
press conference to announce a reward of
15:50
$20,000. Bob
15:53
spoke at the conference stating, quote, a
15:55
coward drove up, approached my daughter
15:58
and forever changed our lives. An
16:00
unknown assailant shot and killed an unarmed
16:02
and defenseless woman and a brutal act
16:05
that demands justice. We
16:07
never imagined a life without her. We
16:09
still can't. Sergio also
16:11
spoke stating, quote, My wife
16:14
Liz was a beautiful person with the
16:16
kindest of souls. Tragically
16:18
someone stole that away from us on the morning of
16:20
January 25th. I don't
16:22
understand how someone could do this to her. She
16:25
didn't deserve to pass away like this. How
16:27
someone could be so monstrous to commit an act
16:29
like this, I just really can't
16:32
understand. I had to trade
16:34
our fifth anniversary for a funeral. We
16:36
need justice for Liz. I
16:38
need justice for Liz. I love
16:40
you, Liz. Unfortunately,
16:43
the press conference didn't bring in the leads
16:45
police were looking for, so
16:47
they continued on with their investigation. In
16:50
order to narrow down the suspect pool,
16:52
the police concentrated on identifying someone who
16:54
knew the following, where Liz
16:56
lived, what Sergio's car looked
16:58
like and what time he left for work, and
17:01
that Liz would be hosting a garage sale
17:03
by herself instead of going to work. The
17:06
suspect also had to know where to park
17:08
and how to approach Liz to avoid being
17:10
captured by the Barrazas ring doorbell camera. To
17:13
start, the police worked on coming up with a list
17:15
of people who knew about the garage sale because
17:18
Liz didn't post about the sale on social media
17:20
and she only put up signs that made the
17:22
pool of people pretty small. The
17:25
police found out that Liz's coworkers all knew about
17:27
the sale since she had taken the day off
17:29
from work, but all of the coworkers
17:31
were accounted for at work at the time of
17:33
the shooting. That just left
17:35
Sergio and a few friends and family that
17:37
knew about the sale and as expected, the
17:40
police focused their investigation on Sergio since he
17:42
was Liz's husband. At
17:44
this point, the police knew Sergio couldn't be the
17:47
killer because he was on his way to work
17:49
when the shooting happened and he didn't fit the
17:51
suspect description, but they wondered if it
17:53
was possible he hired someone to kill Liz.
17:56
The police told investigation discovery that they
17:59
were suspicious of Sergio for more reasons
18:01
than just him being her husband. They
18:03
actually found his behavior unusual after he arrived
18:05
at the house on the morning of the
18:08
murder. When he showed
18:10
them the ring doorbell footage, he displayed
18:12
no emotional response and remained unaffected by
18:14
the sound of his wife's screams during
18:16
the shooting. A conversation
18:18
between Sergio and an officer was recorded
18:21
by one officer's patrol car, and
18:23
in the video Sergio can be heard saying quote,
18:26
oh my god dude this is crazy, so
18:28
they just fucking shot her and left? Now
18:31
some people have pointed to this video as
18:33
further evidence that Sergio didn't have the typical
18:35
response you would expect in a situation like
18:37
this. Another thing that
18:40
police had noticed was that after they released Sergio
18:42
from detainment and allowed him to leave the scene,
18:44
he didn't seem in a hurry to get to the hospital. He
18:47
stuck around the house to talk to neighbors and the media.
18:50
All of this behavior struck the police as odd.
18:53
Sergio didn't fit the profile of a distressed husband
18:56
who just found out that his wife had been
18:58
shot four times in the driveway. Thinking
19:01
Sergio could have something to do with Liz's
19:03
murder, the police asked him about Liz's life
19:05
insurance. He said that Liz had
19:07
life insurance through her work, but he didn't
19:09
think the amount was very high. The
19:11
police looked into the policy and learned that she was
19:13
actually worth quite a bit, $250,000. And
19:18
if Liz died by an accident or murder, the
19:20
policy would double to be worth $500,000. The
19:24
police looked into Sergio and Liz's relationship further and
19:26
tried to find if there were any signs of
19:28
trouble or an affair. But
19:31
after speaking to friends and family and
19:33
scouring Liz and Sergio's phones, they
19:35
found no signs of any issues. In
19:37
fact, it seemed like they were a young couple having the time
19:39
of their lives. But
19:41
just to be sure they weren't missing anything,
19:43
the police also looked into Sergio's bank records.
19:46
And as far as we know,
19:48
they found no unusual financial transactions
19:50
before or after Liz's murder. The
19:52
police also asked Sergio to take a polygraph test
19:55
and he agreed. They later
19:57
told Investigation Discovery that he passed the
19:59
test, however, the police have never ruled
20:01
Sergio out as a suspect. They
20:03
have stated they won't rule anyone out until they
20:05
find the killer. When you

21:08
looking like the top suspect, the
21:10
police decided to look at the video of the shooting
21:12
again and noticed that the
21:14
killer was wearing knee-high, light-colored boots, almost
21:17
like what someone dressed up as a stormtrooper
21:19
would be wearing. The police
21:21
spoke with Sergio and asked if anyone at the 501st group
21:24
had a grudge against Liz and would want her dead,
21:27
but he couldn't think of anyone. The
21:30
police vetted every member of the group anyway, but
21:32
didn't identify any suspects. By
21:35
November of 2019, the
21:37
police hadn't determined any motive for Liz's murder.
21:41
Despite this, the lead detective told the media that
21:43
he believed more than one person was involved.
21:46
He didn't elaborate further. Now,
21:49
real quickly, I don't know what
21:51
to take from this. I
21:53
always say this. I don't have access to the entire
21:56
case. I think
21:58
what he's trying to say, if I'm reading between the... the
22:00
lines is that he
22:02
believes the person who actually shot Liz
22:05
was either doing this for
22:07
someone else or
22:09
because of someone else. And
22:12
I'll kind of get into that
22:14
a little bit here, I guess. It's
22:16
one of those situations where you want to point
22:18
out the obvious. Either
22:21
this person was hired by someone to
22:23
kill Liz or
22:25
because of something that Liz was
22:28
involved in or because of someone Liz
22:30
was involved with, this person
22:32
wanted her dead. It was more
22:35
advantageous for Liz to no longer be in the picture. What
22:38
am I saying by that? Just not to be cryptic. If
22:41
Sergio was dating someone else, maybe
22:44
this person was the individual that Sergio
22:46
was dating and in order for Sergio
22:48
and her to be together, she
22:52
shot Liz. And I'm
22:54
saying this because it's
22:56
not a strong theory, but I will say that there
22:58
are people when I've been reading some stuff online
23:00
who have suggested, and I'm not even going to say
23:03
her name, but Sergio's
23:05
new wife kind of fits
23:07
the description of the person in the video. But
23:10
as I said earlier, the person
23:12
in the video may be wearing a
23:14
disguise for that purpose, to throw off
23:16
what they really look like. So
23:19
I don't put too much weight in it, but I
23:21
also don't discredit it. But to kind of bring this
23:23
back to the point of what the detective
23:25
said, sure, it looks like this
23:28
person had an axe to grind with Liz
23:30
because of someone and that someone
23:32
would know who this person was or
23:35
just straightforward, this person was hired
23:37
by another individual to kill Liz.
23:40
Now by January 25th, 2020, one
23:43
year had passed since Liz was murdered. Her
23:45
family spoke with ABC 13 to mark
23:48
the somber occasion. Liz's father
23:50
Bob said the shock and horror of Liz's
23:52
murder made no sense. He added
23:54
that even if they learn who the killer is
23:56
and why Liz was killed, to them,
23:58
the why will not be seen. never make sense.
24:02
Sergio described the shooting as the worst day of his
24:04
life. He said he and
24:06
Liz should still be together and they should
24:08
be talking about planning their next anniversary trip.
24:11
The lead detective also spoke to the media and
24:13
said there was now a warrant in the case,
24:15
but he didn't explain what the warrant was for.
24:19
All he said was, quote, I
24:21
feel the result of the warrant will be
24:23
critical in the investigation and most likely will
24:25
expose a suspect and who's responsible for this.
24:29
Unfortunately, it looks like he was
24:31
wrong. By January 2021,
24:34
two years had passed since Liz was murdered. The
24:37
police provided an update stating they had
24:39
identified some suspects, but were still working
24:41
on others. They also
24:43
released new footage in the case. It
24:46
was the video that Sergio found on the
24:48
home's ring doorbell camera. All right.
24:50
Now, before I play this video, two
24:52
things. First off, you don't
24:54
see anything, but you definitely
24:56
hear Liz being shot
24:59
and her screaming. So just a warning
25:01
about that. Secondly, your human
25:03
nature is going to be to turn this volume all
25:05
the way up to try to hear what Liz and
25:07
the suspect are saying to each other. Refrain
25:09
from doing that initially. The gunshots
25:12
are very, very loud. And if
25:14
you're wearing headphones, it will hurt
25:16
your ears. I know this because
25:18
I did it to mine the first time through. So
25:21
take my advice. Don't turn it up right away.
25:24
Listen or watch the video and then decide the volume
25:26
control from there. But I'm going to play the clip
25:28
now and we'll get right back into it. Alright,
26:02
so like we were just talking about, the
26:04
shooting wasn't caught on the camera due to
26:06
the angle, but the camera did
26:08
capture the Nissan Frontier driving by the
26:10
house multiple times. This
26:12
video also had a clearer photo of the
26:14
truck than had been previously released, so the
26:16
police asked people to focus on looking at
26:19
the truck. They were hoping
26:21
someone who knew something would see the video
26:23
and finally come forward. The police
26:25
also had a direct message for the killer. They
26:28
said, quote, I hope you can't sleep
26:30
at night and that you know we are
26:32
never going to stop looking for Liz's murderer. There
26:35
is no time limit on this case. For
26:37
the next year, Rosemary and Bob
26:39
continued advocating for Liz's case and raising
26:42
money to increase the reward. They
26:44
also set up a website titled Who Killed
26:46
Liz Barraza to share information about who Liz
26:49
was, the facts of the case, and tip
26:51
line info. Now in
26:53
January of 2022, three years
26:55
had passed since Liz was killed. Bob
26:57
and Rosemary told the media they still weren't sure
27:00
why Liz was killed and they couldn't
27:02
think of anyone who would want to hurt her. Bob
27:05
and Rosemary said they were going to keep fighting
27:07
for justice in Liz's case no matter how long
27:09
it took. They wanted to get
27:11
the killer off the street and get justice for
27:13
their daughter because she deserves that. That
27:16
month, a press conference was held and a $50,000
27:19
reward was announced. Sergio
27:22
spoke at the conference stating, quote, I
27:25
just hope this helps. And I
27:27
hope someone steps up. We need
27:29
somebody to do the right thing. We
27:31
need justice for Liz. And we hope
27:33
to get that this year. The
27:35
police also provided an update stating the case
27:38
was still active and detectives had just gone
27:40
to Miami to interview a person of interest.
27:43
However, they needed more tips in order to
27:45
solve this case. By
27:47
January of 2023, four years had passed. So
27:51
Bob and Rosemary sat down with a news outlet
27:53
for an interview. Bob said
27:55
that he wouldn't wish the last four years of their
27:57
life on anybody, but at the end of the day,
27:59
all they care about are the people that
28:01
did this getting caught and kept from ever doing
28:03
this to another family." Bob
28:06
and Rosemary also spoke about Liz
28:08
and Sergio's relationship. Bob said
28:10
they were two wonderful people and when they
28:12
were together they were even better. Rosemary
28:15
added quote, Liz was such a
28:17
kind person. Maybe somebody was jealous of
28:19
her. Maybe they were jealous of
28:22
Sergio and Liz's relationship. Sergio,
28:24
who had recently remarried, also sat down
28:27
for an interview with the same news
28:29
outlet. He said a lot
28:31
of people consider him the prime suspect in Liz's
28:33
death, but he wasn't involved. He
28:35
stated quote, I know people immediately say it was the
28:38
husband who did it. I understand that, but you had
28:40
to know Liz and I. You had to see
28:42
us. I still love her to this
28:44
day. Liz was amazing. It was like
28:46
a fairy tale that we had together. In
28:48
December of 2023, the FBI and Texas
28:51
Rangers joined the investigation. The
28:54
lead detective told the media that the
28:56
added agency's expertise and resources would allow
28:58
them to further examine evidence and jump
29:00
on new leads. He believes
29:02
that they are closer than ever to solving Liz's
29:04
murder, but it's going to take that one
29:07
person who knows something to come forward. The
29:10
detective also stated that over the years,
29:12
the police have gathered new evidence. However, he could
29:15
not go into detail about what that evidence was.
29:18
Now, unfortunately, this is the
29:20
last update we have in this case. The
29:22
police are still searching for the killer and
29:25
Liz's family remains desperate for answers. When

30:34
again. When always
30:36
qualify this gone off. When.
30:39
I can see what I can hear when
30:41
I know about this case and I obviously
30:43
don't have access to the case files and
30:45
if I did, I. May feel
30:47
differently but going off what we know. Let's
30:50
talk about the the murder itself first. Because.
30:53
We do have that. We do have the video. We.
30:55
Do have the audio. And.
30:57
Are things that you can take away. From.
31:00
What you can see in here. That.
31:03
Are indisputable. Their fact. We.
31:06
Can see that it was deliberate. We.
31:08
Can see. That. It
31:11
was intentional. And.
31:13
I think it's fairly easy to deduce
31:15
that. With. A high degree of
31:17
certainty that. Lives was the
31:19
target. No doubt about it, he was
31:21
the target. And. The intent. Was.
31:24
To kill Her. Wasn't. To
31:26
send a message wasn't to inquire
31:28
about something. Wasn't. To steal
31:30
something from her? It was to kill
31:32
her. How do we know that?
31:35
Well. As I said in
31:38
the earlier description of the case,
31:40
We. Know that. Obviously
31:43
she was killed on January twenty fifth, but
31:45
also. There's strong evidence through
31:47
surveillance that she was. That. The
31:49
house with case before that. And.
31:52
That. Tells us that these individuals were
31:55
this individual. Was. Gathering
31:57
intelligence was was getting familiar.
32:00
Witnesses the surroundings. Was.
32:02
Trying to understand the best way to get
32:04
in there and get out of there without
32:06
being seen. Or. Heard from which
32:08
is a whole different thing because.
32:11
On the surface you would think that this
32:13
was a. Professional. Hit. That.
32:15
This was a. Size. Done
32:17
by someone who. Had may
32:20
be done this before. But.
32:22
If that were the case, Would.
32:25
They choose to. Go.
32:28
Into a neighborhood that. Is.
32:30
Bound to have numerous cameras.
32:33
Including a camera on the house of the
32:36
of the victim. With.
32:38
They run the risk of going in there
32:40
with a vehicle that's gonna obviously be seen.
32:43
Ah, Do. What they want
32:45
to do and then get out of air in. In
32:47
again two thousand and nineteen. that
32:49
wasn't too long ago. The technologies
32:51
their brings their. On the
32:53
other side of the coin you could say maybe the car
32:56
had been stolen. Maybe. Was a. A
32:58
dumb vehicle. Maybe they wore a disguise knowing
33:00
hey, we're probably going to get picked up.
33:03
By some cameras but.
33:06
We're. Going to get rid of this car immediately after
33:08
the fact, so it really doesn't matter and we're going
33:10
to wear disguise so that doesn't matter either. But.
33:12
What that could also mean. Instead of this
33:14
professional who plotted this whole thing, you didn't
33:16
really care that the car was gonna be
33:18
seen on camera. This. Could
33:21
be an indication that it was personal,
33:23
that it was emotional. That.
33:25
This person was not a professional and just.
33:28
Wanted. List dead for whatever reason? we
33:30
don't know, but they just wanted her
33:32
dead in there were so angry with
33:35
something she had done or said. We're.
33:37
Been a part of that. They just they wanted to kill
33:39
her. Okay, we can. Now
33:41
that's a possibility. We haven't seen any signs
33:43
of A or are indications why someone would
33:45
want to do that, but maybe there's something
33:48
we don't know so we'll put that on
33:50
the table as well. Could have been a
33:52
professional hit, It could have been a personal
33:54
attack. Either. Way you pick your
33:56
poison. Both. situations
33:58
the intent was to kill her,
34:00
not to wound her, not to take something from
34:02
her, not to scare her. They
34:05
shot her four times. And
34:07
on the fourth shot, as I described in the story, and
34:09
as you seen with your own eyes, they
34:12
stood over her and shot her in the head to
34:14
ensure that she was going to die. And
34:16
if that wasn't enough, which we don't see very often,
34:19
the killer returned to the crime scene moments
34:22
later just to double check that
34:24
she was no longer moving and that most
34:26
likely she was already deceased. She wasn't, but
34:28
that was their hope that, hey, she's gone,
34:30
let me double check. And they went
34:32
back. That also to me doesn't sound
34:34
like a professional, someone who would
34:37
go back. But again, maybe they're not
34:39
a good professional. That's always possible. So
34:42
where are we now with this case
34:44
and who should we be potentially looking
34:46
at? Well, for one, they
34:48
looked at coworkers and apparently
34:51
they were all accounted for by that
34:53
time. If that's the case, I have
34:55
to take them at their word. But
34:58
I would go back to neighbors. The
35:01
neighbors weren't all accounted for. And
35:03
we talked about her not,
35:05
or Sergio and Liz not putting this
35:07
garage sale on social media, but they
35:09
did put out signs in the area.
35:13
And when I say neighborhood and neighbors, it
35:15
doesn't necessarily have to be someone who lives on
35:18
that street. It could be someone from a street
35:20
over. And the question
35:22
becomes, has she had any issues
35:24
with people in the past? You'd be amazed
35:26
at what people can hold on to. Did
35:28
they have a dispute over a dog or
35:30
a piece of property or I
35:33
don't know, some stupid trivial thing
35:36
that one of these individuals held
35:38
onto and
35:40
decided to do this
35:42
for whatever reason. I'm saying this, by
35:44
the way, knowing that it's
35:46
a long shot, more than likely it's not the
35:49
reason, but I'm giving you options. I'm giving different
35:51
scenarios for the sake of
35:53
being objective and open to all possibilities.
35:55
How can I cross something off the
35:57
board if it hasn't been completely ruled
35:59
out? And for me, it hasn't. There are
36:01
people in that community who were aware that
36:03
there was going to be a garage sale
36:05
on the on that morning. And could
36:08
one of them have had an ax to grind? Sure.
36:11
But let me also throw something at you. What
36:13
if it's someone who is
36:16
just a psychotic person, a potential
36:18
serial killer, and has
36:20
been wanting to do something like this for
36:22
a long time? They've had this itch they've
36:24
wanted to scratch forever and
36:26
they see the situation. They know when the husband's
36:29
leaving or they at least think they know when
36:31
the husband's leaving. They know there's a garage sale.
36:34
They've been maybe watching Liz for a while
36:36
and maybe they don't personally know her, but
36:38
for some reason they're drawn to her. Could
36:41
this be a random act of violence? Could
36:43
this be someone who had no personal connection
36:45
and was not hired by anyone, but
36:48
just was looking for the right person and the
36:50
right time to kill? And
36:53
it's as simple as that. All these serial killers we've had
36:56
from the past, they don't usually
36:58
have a connection, a personal connection
37:00
to their victims. They find someone
37:03
who's a victim of opportunity that
37:05
fits the bill, that fits whatever they're looking for,
37:08
that maybe puts that victim in a situation where they
37:10
feel they can get away with it and
37:13
they do what they want to do. It
37:15
could be that simple and that could be the explanation
37:17
as to why law enforcement has
37:19
not caught this person yet. But
37:22
let's talk about what a
37:24
lot of people are talking about. And
37:27
that's Sergio. He
37:30
himself has acknowledged that
37:32
human nature is to say the husband
37:34
did it, but
37:37
it's not only human nature. Law enforcement
37:39
has also said that his behavior after
37:41
the incident was very suspicious.
37:45
And based on what we've been told, I
37:47
would agree with that, but that could be
37:49
a personality trait. Maybe that's this form of
37:51
shock. Maybe that's how he dealt
37:54
with the trauma that he was experiencing.
37:57
But On the surface, I agree.
37:59
Suspicious, uncharacterized. For someone who
38:01
just saw or heard his wife
38:03
being brutally murdered on camera. But.
38:07
Again, This. Is given the benefit of
38:09
the doubt. There. Now tack on to
38:11
it that you do have a potential mode
38:13
of finances. right? There was nothing
38:15
in there to suggest that they were hurting for
38:17
cash, but who couldn't use an extra half a
38:19
million dollars? Is. There a
38:21
world. Where. On the surface
38:23
everything look good. Is.
38:26
There are on the world where there was no
38:28
infidelity going on behind the scenes. Nothing that would
38:30
be seen by police. But. He
38:32
was not in love with her anymore and wanted to remove
38:34
her. From. The equation wanted the money.
38:37
Is. That possible. I'd.
38:39
Be remiss if I said it wasn't of course
38:41
it's possible. And. It's a
38:43
plausible scenario. Based. On what
38:46
we've talked about so far, Am I saying
38:48
he's guilty of that? Absolutely not. But.
38:50
I think even Sergio himself. Which.
38:53
Respect. To him if he's not the person who
38:55
did this is saying Listen, I get it. I can see
38:57
how people are getting there but you didn't know his and
39:00
I, you didn't know our relationship and he may be way.
39:03
But. I've also done some research on this case
39:05
before sitting down and recording and I know. The.
39:07
Popular opinion on line and trust me, I take it
39:09
with a grain of salt is that. Sergio
39:13
wasn't bought. A lot of people believe that
39:15
and they have even gone a step further
39:17
to say that his now wife and again
39:19
not going to say her name fits the
39:21
description of this of this woman that was
39:23
in or that they believe might have been
39:25
a woman who shoot Liz fits the description
39:27
of her. Well. That's that's a
39:29
hard thing to do because again, we've
39:31
blown force been as even said, they
39:33
believed that the suspect was wearing some
39:35
type of disguise potentially, but maybe they
39:37
weren't. So. I
39:40
try to read between the lines. When.
39:42
We think about where the case is now
39:44
and what law enforcement has said will for
39:47
one, the fact that they're releasing more information
39:49
to the public as of late. Unfortunately
39:51
tells me they're not as close as they
39:54
would like to be because if they were
39:56
really on the trail. They. wouldn't
39:58
feel the need to reach out to the public there They
40:00
need more. They're not there yet. They may
40:02
have some theories. They may be strong in nature, but
40:05
they're not there yet And when they say they've gone to
40:07
places like Miami To
40:09
you know, that's a far away away from Texas
40:12
It tells me that maybe they're on to something or
40:14
maybe they're just tracking down leads and if it is
40:17
directed back to Miami that
40:20
would indicate a potential hit and If
40:24
it is a hit that goes back to the question
40:26
again Who would have a reason to
40:29
kill Liz Barraza? Who would what would the
40:31
incentive be? What would someone gain
40:34
from that and you would think it would be
40:36
finances, which is how we circle back
40:38
to Sergio But then we talk
40:40
about the pool that
40:42
law enforcement created and
40:44
I thought it was pretty smart what they
40:46
did there It's because you can take you know
40:49
create that Venn diagram right where you have
40:51
these different circles of people And
40:53
you want to see which ones overlap So
40:56
as they said you talk about
40:59
who would know That there was
41:01
a garage sale that morning. It is a small
41:03
pool, right? it is a very small pool and
41:06
then who would know that Sergio
41:08
was going to go to work and That
41:11
Liz was going to stay home because she
41:13
called out of work to work the garage
41:15
sale That Venn diagram right
41:17
there just those two groups very small. That's
41:19
why everyone's leaning towards Sergio because as They
41:23
as we kind of laid out here the
41:25
suspect sat down the street for a little
41:28
while waited for Sergio to
41:30
leave and then attacked Liz and as
41:32
you can see on the ring doorbell
41:34
camera angle The truck literally drove right
41:36
by the house pulled the three-point turn
41:38
comes back and gets out of the car.
41:40
So This
41:42
this person was waiting for Sergio to leave.
41:45
There's no doubt about it And
41:47
then finally like I said two minutes
41:49
ago those two circles, right?
41:52
Who would know that there was a
41:54
garage sale who would know? Sergio was going to
41:56
work who would know Liz was gonna be home
41:58
and who would benefit from
42:01
Liz no longer being here. There's
42:04
not many people that would check all of
42:06
those boxes and so that's why I think
42:09
a lot of people end up getting
42:12
to the thought,
42:15
the opinion, that Sergio
42:17
is somehow involved. Where
42:19
do I stand on it? As far as I'm
42:21
concerned he's innocent until proven guilty. He's
42:24
never been charged with a crime and
42:27
although I can say definitively it
42:29
does not look good for him, there
42:31
is a world where as I
42:34
laid out a few minutes ago
42:36
that this murder of Elizabeth
42:39
is completely unrelated to anyone
42:41
in her life. As
42:44
Bob said earlier in this story it
42:46
sounds like and it sounds like it to
42:48
me too. She says something like good morning
42:50
but it's also, I don't know if my mind's
42:53
playing tricks on me but it's the way she says it.
42:55
It doesn't sound like a like oh
42:57
good morning like someone she knows. It sounds like
42:59
a good morning like hey I don't know you
43:01
but I'm being polite. That's at least what I
43:03
picked up from it. I can't, I don't
43:06
have the best hearing to begin with. I couldn't get anything else
43:08
out of it. So to me it
43:10
did suggest that she didn't know this person and
43:13
I've seen some things online where people
43:16
have said that they've heard, they can hear
43:18
you know who I am or
43:20
something like that. There's a lot of different theories
43:22
out there about what can be heard
43:24
throughout that recording. I couldn't pick up
43:26
on anything but if she
43:29
really didn't know this person it's
43:31
one of two situations right? It's
43:33
the hitman situation right? Professional hit
43:35
taken out on her or
43:38
it's this attacker who knew
43:40
who Liz was for one reason or another,
43:42
knew the dynamics of the household and
43:46
somehow knew that morning that Sergio
43:49
wasn't gonna be around and
43:51
that there was gonna be a garage sale and
43:53
maybe that person deduced. Well hey listen if there's
43:55
gonna be a garage sale more than likely at
43:57
least one of the two individuals that live there
43:59
will be handling it. And
44:02
by parking down the street, they were able to
44:04
do it. The only thing against that is
44:07
the idea that this would be someone who
44:09
was from that community and yet they had
44:11
to drive into the neighborhood. So they weren't
44:13
too close by unless they,
44:15
again, we're getting crazy here, but drove
44:18
down the road, grabbed the unmarked
44:21
vehicle, came back in to make it look like it
44:23
was someone who wasn't from the community when in fact
44:25
they were. And I'll also say
44:28
with serial killers, it's usually not like this,
44:30
but it's not completely impossible. We've had many other
44:33
cases where you have an individual who's sick
44:35
in the head and is going around and
44:37
shooting homeless people for no reason, no connection
44:39
to him whatsoever just for the thrill of
44:41
it. So could that be the
44:43
situation here? Absolutely. And that's, that's
44:46
kind of where I stand on this one. And to
44:48
really make it clear, I don't
44:50
feel good about Sergio, but
44:52
I don't necessarily think
44:55
with a high degree of certainty that it's him. I'm just
44:57
saying, looking at the facts,
45:00
it doesn't look good optically on the surface.
45:02
It doesn't look good. And I think even
45:04
he would admit it from an outside perspective,
45:06
looking in, it does not look great. And
45:11
I'll also say on that same note, if
45:14
someone came out tomorrow and there was an
45:16
arrest and it was a person who was
45:18
unrelated to Sergio or Liz and
45:20
there was no connection as far as a
45:22
hiring of this person in that we learned
45:25
that if this individual had killed multiple people
45:27
other than Liz, just for the sake of
45:29
doing it, I would not be
45:31
surprised in a lease. So I will say
45:34
to everyone out there, although things may not
45:36
look good for certain individuals, don't
45:38
assume just because it looks like it could be the
45:40
case that it is. As
45:42
I said before, there's been many times where
45:45
you'll check six or seven boxes, but once
45:47
you get to that eighth box, it
45:50
just doesn't fit. And when that happens in
45:52
an investigation, you have to
45:54
go back unfortunately and start from
45:56
square one, regardless of how
45:59
demoralizing that is. might be that welcome
46:01
to the world of investigations. So
46:03
that's where we are. We're covering this case and
46:05
we're doing it to get the word out there about
46:08
Liz's death and as Bob
46:10
said in a quote
46:12
earlier in this episode, they
46:14
don't only want to take this person off the street
46:16
for what they did to Liz, they want
46:18
to prevent them from doing it to anyone else
46:20
and that's where I come back to the whole
46:22
potential serial killer scenario. So
46:25
I completely agree with him. We don't
46:27
know how many deaths this
46:29
person is responsible for. So
46:31
we're going to cover it here. Hopefully there's someone
46:33
out there who maybe knows something. I
46:35
don't think anything from the video or audio is
46:38
going to be taken away
46:40
from this or analyzed in a way where they
46:42
point something out that a million
46:44
sets of eyes haven't already looked at and hasn't
46:46
been able to pull anything out of it yet,
46:48
but you never know. So as
46:50
always, if you know something or you know
46:52
someone who knows something, please come
46:54
forward with that information and just so you know
46:57
exactly what we're talking about here tonight
46:59
on Detective Perspective. I'm going to give you a
47:01
quick recap. So Liz Baraza was
47:03
shot four times in the driveway of
47:06
her Tom Ball, Texas home on January 25th, 2019.
47:08
The suspect was wearing a disguise
47:12
and driving a dark-colored 2013 to 2019 Nissan
47:14
Frontier Pro 4x model with
47:20
four doors and a crew cab. If
47:23
you have any information, please contact
47:25
Crimestoppers at 713-222-TIPS or the
47:27
Harris County Sheriff's Office
47:29
at 713-221-6000. And
47:32
just remember, there is a $50,000 reward. And lastly, I
47:34
want to send
47:40
my thoughts to Bob, Rosemary, and Sergio.
47:43
They deserve justice and hopefully with
47:45
the FBI and the Texas Rangers
47:47
now joining this investigation with
47:50
those added resources, maybe we'll get
47:52
over that hump and finally
47:54
answer who killed Elizabeth
47:56
Baraza. Her family deserves it.
47:58
She deserves it in that community. He deserves it.
48:01
So if you know anything, please reach out. And
48:03
last but not least, I want to talk about
48:05
Season of Justice. This will be the last episode
48:07
I covered this in. When we
48:09
started this, I asked you guys to help me raise
48:12
$1,000. We
48:14
surpassed that almost immediately, and we're very close
48:16
to $1,500 at this point. And
48:20
Season of Justice actually reached out to me, the
48:22
people over there, and said how surprised they were that
48:25
we were able to raise that money so quickly. And
48:27
that's a testament to you guys and your support for
48:29
me and this channel and what we're trying to do.
48:31
So I don't know the exact number we're at right now, but
48:34
I want to let you guys know that I want to be
48:36
part of this. I know the feeling you get by giving back
48:38
and helping. And we do it all the time on Criminal Coffee.
48:41
But it's one thing for me to sit up here and ask
48:43
you guys to donate money. It's another thing
48:45
to give money myself. So I will also be
48:47
donating. Wherever we are right now, it doesn't matter.
48:49
I will also be donating $500 to this cause
48:53
to make sure that we get over that hump of $1,500. So
48:56
again, I want to thank
48:58
everyone who's already donated. If you would like to
49:00
donate, it's right on the screen right here. You
49:02
can go back and look at that. There's also
49:04
a text message that you can send. I'll pull
