0:38
the night of December first, two thousand
0:40
and Seventeen. Maggie Long, a seventeen year
0:42
old high school student. Was. Found
0:45
dead in our families world Billie
0:47
Colorado home which had been burglarized
0:49
and set on fire. Investigators
0:51
later determined that Maggie had been
0:53
physically assaulted. Than. Lit on fire
0:56
while she was still alive. It's
0:58
been just over six years since
1:00
Maggie was brutally murdered and investigators
1:02
are still searching for the people
1:04
responsible. Hey
1:36
everyone will come back to detect a
1:38
prospective. My name is Derek Lowe Vassar.
1:40
I'm a licensed private investigator and former
1:42
police detective. And. Each week I'll be
1:44
covering an unsolved case and story format. Or.
1:46
They give you my perspective on the
1:49
investigation and provide contact information for the
1:51
individuals or organizations connected to the case
1:53
so that if you have any tips
1:55
you can contact them directly and maybe
1:57
you can help solve the case and.
2:00
If you're someone who's interested in
2:02
true crime, specifically unsolved cases, and
2:04
you would like to hear my
2:06
opinion on those investigations, please consider
2:08
subscribing with you're watching on you
2:10
tube or listening on Apple podcasts,
2:12
spot a Fi, or whatever platform
2:14
you use. It would be greatly
2:16
appreciated. Or. Eight. So this week's
2:18
case. Maggie Long. It's the
2:20
impact. We have one victim. But.
2:23
We have potentially three or
2:25
four suspects. We. Have
2:27
items that were. Allegedly
2:29
stolen neck that could still be out there
2:32
may be tracked down. On. We
2:34
have a witness that were unaware of it. This
2:36
time we know of one witness. There may be
2:38
others. And. At.
2:41
The at the root of it all we just have a really
2:43
tragic story of a young. Girl. Who was
2:45
still in high school. And was
2:47
taken from her family and taken for most far
2:49
too early. And the be people
2:52
responsible for her horrific death which
2:54
will get into tonight with going
2:56
into too many details distal after.
2:58
Just. A walking amongst us. They haven't
3:00
been held accountable for what they've they've
3:03
gone, they haven't answered for the crime
3:05
they've committed, and although this case took
3:07
place six years ago that still relatively
3:09
new when it comes to cold cases,
3:11
this isn't even a cold. Cases are
3:13
still are very relevant and very solvable.
3:15
so I want to get this information
3:17
out there. There's a huge reward associated
3:19
with it as well. not that that
3:21
should matter one way or the other,
3:23
but but it it does play a
3:25
factor. For some people, it's as call
3:27
it what it is. So without
3:29
wasting any more time, let's get right into
3:31
it. Maggie. Long. Born
3:34
on December seventeenth. Nineteen Ninety
3:36
Nine. Was. The Third: Zelda Sun
3:38
and Heather Long. Chinese. Immigrants
3:40
who fled to the United States from
3:42
A V the Mean refugee camp in
3:44
the nineteen seventies. The couple worked
3:46
tirelessly in the restaurant industry and eventually
3:49
came to own several restaurants and a
3:51
liquor store and be we colorado. A.
3:53
Small town around an hour south west
3:55
of Denver. When. Maggie was a
3:57
toddler. The long family moved into their dream
3:59
home. Located in a thirty seven
4:01
hundred block of County road Forty Three, A.
4:04
Very rural area around ten minutes
4:06
outside of Bailey. The. Home Side
4:08
a quarter of a mile off the main
4:10
road and was surrounded by twenty seven acres
4:12
of secluded woodlands. Not. A long's
4:15
six thousand square foot home featured in in Los
4:17
We on the second for but it also had
4:19
an apartment in the attic which was rented out
4:21
by a non family member which will get into
4:24
more in a little bit. And. Two
4:26
thousand and fourteen Maggie started attending Plaque
4:28
Can in high school. And
4:30
according to the King and Courier
4:32
maggie teachers and friends described for
4:35
is kind, generous, ambitious, And
4:37
passionate about everything. Maggie was
4:39
deeply involved in her school community. Participating.
4:42

4:44
including softball, Student council,
4:46
Key club, National Honor

4:53

4:56
How To Plan a Concert at The High School
4:58
featuring several bands from Denver. A
5:00
concert was scheduled for the evening of
5:02
Friday December first. On. That
5:04
day, Maggie attended classes and Plaque Canyon
5:07
High School Like normal. After
5:09
school let out around to forty pm. Maggie.
5:11
Me to twenty minute drive home to change
5:13
clothes and grab snacks for the concert. But.
5:16
She never returned. This
5:18
worried everyone. Maggie was always responsible and
5:20
wouldn't miss something important. But.
5:23
Mag friends tried calling her. All
5:25
they got was her voice mail. Around
5:27
the same time, the tenant who lived
5:29
in the Lungs family attic apartment texted
5:31
Baggies older sister Connie to say he
5:33
was hearing quite a few loud noises
5:35
coming from the downstairs area. Now.
5:38
The tenant has never been publicly named, so
5:40
I'm going to refer to him as ten,
5:42
but obviously that's not his real name. According
5:44
to the flume, the noises were still
5:47
occurring around seven pm. So. Tim
5:49
called nine one one from his apartment. He
5:51
reported that people were downstairs arguing,
5:54
being violent, smashing things, And.
5:56
Attempting to set the house on fire. Tim.
5:58
Told the dispatcher that he was. Can we do? We
6:00
be attic. Now. Before we go any
6:03
further, I want to take a quick second to hear

8:06
right? So we're back. Now. Deputies from
8:09
the Park County Sheriff's office as well
8:11
as firefighters from multiple districts responded to
8:13
the house just before seven twelve Pm.
8:16
At they headed up the quarter mile long
8:18
driveway, they could see visible flames in the
8:20
home six car garage. As. Firefighters went
8:23
to work extinguishing, the fire deputies focused
8:25
on looking up the three vehicles parked
8:27
at the scene. They. Learn that
8:29
one of the vehicles was Maggie is another
8:31
belong to Mag his father son. And.
8:34
The third was registered to Tim, who at this
8:36
point was still refusing to come out of the
8:38
attic apartment. Shortly. After that,
8:40
Maggie sister Carney showed up at the house
8:42
and told police that Maggie was missing. And.
8:45
That she hadn't shown up at the high school for the
8:47
concert like she was supposed to. Tiny.
8:49
Also, inform police that her father was out of
8:51
town on a business trip in California at the
8:53
time. He. With currently working on
8:56
acquiring apartment complex in that state. At.
8:58
Around seven thirty ten called mag his
9:00
mother had who's working at one of
9:02
the family's restaurants. To tell her that
9:04
he heard a loud bang and then all the lights went
9:06
out in the house. The. Restaurant was
9:09
busy so the manager suggested Heather stay
9:11
behind. And. That the manager would take others
9:13
vehicle to the house to see what was going on.
9:16
The. Manager was not able to reach the home
9:18
due to the number of law enforcement. An
9:20
emergency vehicles the rat the seen. The.
9:22
Manager then called Heather and said she come
9:24
out to the house immediately. A. Couple
9:26
who was dining at the restaurant then offered to
9:28
give had a ride over to the house. And.
9:31
After had arrived she and her daughter
9:33
county. Weren't. Told what was going
9:35
on by law enforcement or first responders. They.
9:38
Had no idea where Maggie was, if she was
9:40
at the house, if the people who said the
9:42
house on fire had kidnapped her, or she was
9:45
somewhere else completely. Son. Was also
9:47
notified about Maggie disappearance and the fire
9:49
and book the next flight home to
9:51
Colorado. Firefighters. Continued trying
9:53
to put the flames are unclear the house
9:55
of all possible occupants. Just before
9:57
a pm, they reported to dispatch.
10:00
The barricaded room that they were trying to
10:02
get into. Not exact location
10:04
of the room has never been publicized,
10:06
but it's possible they were talking about
10:08
the unit that Tim was currently staying
10:10
and because minutes after they made the
10:12
call, the dispatch tim finally agreed to
10:14
leave the attic apartments and spoke with
10:16
detectives. And now wants had been
10:18
located. There was still no sign of Maggie. So.
10:21
Firefighters continue putting out the fire and searching
10:23
the house. The. Flu reported that a
10:25
d twelve pm the far had been
10:27
completely extinguished. Firefighters. Than
10:29
as dispatched to call the Colorado Bureau
10:32
of Investigations. Because. They had discovered
10:34
quote numerous starts to the fire. indicating
10:36
that the far had been an arson. Now.
10:39
Real quick. I can't tell you exactly
10:41
what the indicators would have been for
10:43
this particular incident. Because it's an open
10:45
investigation, they haven't share that information. But.
10:48
I can tell you as a detective we do take.
10:50
Different. Classes regarding arson and so
10:52
that we can. Initially identify
10:55
some possible indications of
10:57
of an accelerant. Or.
11:00
An area where the fire was started. In.
11:02
Some situations as a investigator yoga when they're
11:04
and I will tell this is usually a
11:06
collaborative effort. With. The Fire Department and
11:08
the fire Marshal especially in Rhode Island. But.
11:11
We'll go in there and will do a preliminary
11:13
search and try to see if there's anything that
11:16
stands out to us. and also in in some
11:18
cases you can actually smell. The. Accelerant
11:20
which in. A lot of scenarios
11:22
as gasoline. So. As
11:24
this story progresses, I'm not gonna spoil it
11:27
for you hear? you might have an indication
11:29
of what. One of those indicators
11:31
were as far as a possible accelerant,
11:33
But yeah, they. they obviously firefighters are
11:35
trained in doing this, so the minute
11:37
that they're out there. They do
11:39
these things all the time. They know when
11:41
a fire is an electrical fire or robbed
11:44
a gas fire from a stove or something
11:46
like that, or grease fire. and they know
11:48
when something's been deliberately set based on where
11:51
it started and maybe the sites and smells
11:53
that they encounter as soon as they put
11:55
out the fire itself. Now.
11:57
Though the firefighters called for the C B I.
12:00
Keep searching the house for any remaining
12:02
occupants. And. At approximately eleven
12:04
pm. Be. Requested a corner come
12:06
to the scene after a body was found
12:08
in the bedroom. The body was assumed to
12:10
be baggies, but they wouldn't know for sure
12:13
until an autopsy was completed. The
12:15
following day on December second. The.
12:17
C I spent hours at the long
12:19
home collecting evidence. When. They were done.
12:21
The. Homers Release of the Family and
12:23
the Park County Undersheriff released an update
12:26
on Facebook saying quote. On
12:28
scene investigation is wrapped up. Cause.
12:30
And origin of the fire is inconclusive.
12:33
Still, No sign of Maggie. Nobody
12:35
at the fire seen. Obviously.
12:37
The statement was a lie. A body was
12:40
found at the scene and authorities were pretty
12:42
sure was Maggie is. But because of this
12:44
false information the public continued to think that
12:46
Maggie was still missing. I'll. Have to
12:48
pause here for a second. An Ip. Addresses.
12:51
Elephant in the room. I
12:53
can't tell you why he did this. I really
12:55
can't. It. Doesn't make a lot of sense to
12:57
me. The. Calls were going back
12:59
and forth over dispatch and at for
13:01
most of you probably already know this
13:03
but. The. Public can get access
13:05
to a scanner on Amazon or wherever you can
13:07
get him anywhere. And you can put
13:10
in the frequencies for the police department for
13:12
the fire departments and a lot of people
13:14
listen to the police and fire scanners just
13:16
as a hobby. So the fact that they
13:18
called for a corner because they found a
13:21
body that was already public knowledge. so I
13:23
really. Don't understand this but I
13:25
will say I'm an epic. Foreshadow:
13:27
A little be here. Someone. Else
13:30
ends up taking over the investigation
13:32
and handles it completely differently. And
13:35
due to my own anecdotal experience,
13:37
I've dealt with both types of
13:39
leadership. So. For now, I'll just
13:41
say that in my opinion. The.
13:43
Sheriff just wanted to keep everyone in the dark.
13:45
He wanted to, kind of, you know, hold on
13:47
the hoard. Everything in. Not. Sure any
13:50
information with anyone because he wanted to all
13:52
be and house even though it wasn't. And.
13:54
Will get into more about how I feel
13:57
about that type of approach in a few
13:59
minutes. Now. By December third,
14:01
there was a lot of unanswered questions.
14:03
The Sheriff's office posted a statement on
14:05
Facebook saying quote. You. To the serious
14:07
nature of this investigation, we ask that you
14:09
keep the lawn family and your prayers. Were
14:12
not able to release any further information at
14:14
this time. That night the
14:16
Sheriff's office said they were working on an
14:18
act arson investigation and they did not believe
14:20
that there was any risk to the public.
14:23
Again, Not a side tracked this whole
14:25
episode here. Not. Really getting this?
14:27
How would you know? If there's
14:29
a danger to the public, When. You
14:31
don't even know. How. This person
14:33
was killed or why they were killed. You.
14:36
Could have a serial arsonist on the loose. who's gonna
14:38
go on? Do this to other houses in the area.
14:40
you have no clue. So. Just
14:42
to put it bluntly, I think it's very
14:44
irresponsible to come out and say. There's.
14:46
No risk for the public. Win. Regardless,
14:49
of what they knew behind closed doors
14:51
and I obviously been more than I'm
14:53
relying so far. But. Didn't have
14:55
anybody in custody and they clearly don't know who it
14:57
is. And. They truly don't know what the
15:00
motive is so to go out there and see
15:02
this when you don't have to. I
15:04
think was the wrong decision. Now
15:06
on the following day december fourth, a
15:09
judge issued a gag order to prevent
15:11
officials from discussing the investigation. That.
15:13
Same day the body found in the burned home.
15:15
Was. Officially identified as Maggie is.
15:18
Due to the gag order, no one was allowed
15:20
to tell the public about this development. But.
15:22
Three days later, on December seventh, The.
15:25
Gag order was revoked. Sir.
15:27
Fred Wagoner then issued a press release
15:29
notifying the public that Mags body had
15:31
been found in the burned house and
15:33
they were pursuing the investigation as a
15:36
homicide. The. Sheriff announced that
15:38
the task force with local state and
15:40
federal authorities had been formed to further
15:42
investigate the arson and baggies murder. He.
15:45
Asked that who witnessed any suspicious
15:47
people, vehicles or activities in the
15:49
area of the long home to
15:51
contact investigative tip line. Chef.
15:54
Wagner also added quote. This.
15:56
Task will not rest until justice is obtained
15:58
from Maggie and the lawn fan. All.
16:01
Mourn for spent resources available will
16:03
be devoted to bring this investigation
16:05
to a successful outcome. Now.
16:07
According to the few up for forty
16:09
pm that same day, The. Sheriff's Office
16:12
issued a bolo to the Denver Police
16:14
Department would stated quote. The. Bullet
16:16
was going to be for a late
16:18
model nineties to two thousand light colored
16:20
minivan possibly driven by a white male
16:22
in his twenties. Homicide occurred
16:24
during an arson and the suspect driver
16:27
may have some flash burns as well
16:29
as gasoline taken from the house. A
16:31
large case. Ak. Forty Seven.
16:34
Two. Thousand rounds of ammo of seven,
16:36
six two, and a nine millimeter Beretta.
16:38
Please. Advise that the subject is considered
16:41
armed and extremely dangerous. Now.
16:43
Real quickly here. I. Read
16:45
that quote. Exactly the
16:47
way was put out and the reason I did
16:49
is because interchangeably they want at one point a
16:51
suspect. And. Then they said subject actors could
16:54
have been. A mix of words.
16:56
the main be nothing to that. But.
16:58
I I did found it interesting that they used
17:00
to different ways to describe this person when clearly
17:02
it sounds like. They were someone
17:04
that they were very concerned about and
17:06
we're pretty confident. That. They were involved
17:09
with Maggie Is Murder and the arson. Now.
17:11
Somehow this bola with heard by
17:13
numerous new stations in the Denver
17:15
area who subsequently televise the info.
17:18
And. For me, it's really not that much
17:20
of a mystery. As I said earlier, The.
17:22
Public can get police scanners. It's not like
17:24
this secret of thing that you can have
17:27
access to. So. I know for
17:29
a fact from working with the media,
17:31
they have police scanners and all of
17:33
their stations and and the even in
17:35
their vans. and they're constantly listening to
17:37
police and fire dispatch and that's why
17:39
in a lot of cases, as soon
17:41
as the. Accident. Or
17:43
incident occurs. In. In some
17:45
situations, the media is there before law enforcement.
17:47
I've definitely seen a right show up in
17:50
the police vans or to get in there
17:52
satellite our up. So yeah they're They're listening
17:54
to a dirt pro actively looking and and
17:56
and hoping to hear something so that while
17:58
they're out there. They can be
18:00
the first on scene so this isn't
18:03
that big of a mystery to me,
18:05
but it feels like the the police
18:07
department was surprised by the fact that
18:09
is Bola was intercepted. And. It
18:11
became clear really quick that Is Bola was
18:13
not supposed to be released publicly. And.
18:15
The undersheriff told the media quote. We.
18:18
Did issue a bolo. But. It was not
18:20
intended for public consumption. It was
18:22
supposed to go out to a confidential
18:24
law enforcement source. I can confirm what
18:26
the new stations are reporting. It's really
18:29
quite disruptive to our investigation. Because.
18:31
Of the problems that is cause, we're going
18:33
to have to reconvene the task force and
18:35
decide how information for public clarification on the
18:38
bolo will be. Cranston. Now.
18:40
As far as I can tell, the police
18:42
have never revealed where the information about the
18:44
minivan and suspect came from. But. If
18:47
I had to guess I would say came
18:49
from Tim, it's possible that while he was
18:51
in the attic apartment he saw the van
18:53
and the suspect outside the residents had so
18:55
it could also be someone different. But.
18:57
If if I had to take a guess, that's where.
18:59
That's where I would put the odds. And.
19:01
As far as not wanting to put the information
19:04
out there, this goes back to what I was
19:06
saying earlier. This information. I
19:08
guess an argument could be made by
19:10
putting it out there. It could hurt
19:12
the investigation, but at the same time.
19:15
This is a safety hazard. This is this
19:17
is a danger to all the residents in
19:19
that community. If. There's someone
19:21
out there whose armed and potentially
19:24
extremely dangerous. You. Not want
19:26
only law enforcement officials looking for
19:28
this individual. But. You want
19:31
the public, not necessarily. Going
19:33
after this person or interacting with them
19:35
are confronting them. But. You want them
19:38
to be aware of it as well so that
19:40
we don't have another victim. Now.
19:42
I know they could say Well, here's the problem
19:44
with that, right? If we put the ball out
19:46
there for the community, Be. Suspect or
19:48
suspects may hear it as well. Now they
19:50
know we're on their trail and they may
19:53
deviate from their plan. They may change of
19:55
their vehicle, They may change their appearance so
19:57
we don't want to tip them off immediately.
20:00
That we're on them. And I get
20:02
that. I totally get it. But. As
20:04
a leader, there's a balance right as
20:06
a balance of solving the case. And
20:08
are preservation of life and.
20:11
Maggie is no longer with us. But
20:13
this this person or these people. If.
20:16
They're capable of this. They.
20:18
Could do it again. And big clue. You
20:20
have a complete disregard for human life. So.
20:23
I want everyone in my community to
20:25
know. Who. Might be amongst
20:27
them, especially if these people get desperate.
20:29
If. They're suspects in a know that people
20:31
are looking for them. Now
20:34
they may look at it like. That.
20:36
Person's looking at me. weird. They. Must
20:38
know Why Am I after? I have to hurt them Or I
20:40
have to kill them. And. That course,
20:42
that poor individual may have no clue
20:44
they are because they weren't informed. So.
20:46
Despite being present, And
20:48
not being aware of what's going on
20:51
around them, they could become a victim
20:53
themselves. as a leader, I'm. Not
20:55
going to take that risk. It's a it's
20:57
a cost benefit analysis. Yeah, you have secrecy
20:59
we can get out to law enforcement agencies.
21:01
Maybe. Cats the suspects by surprise.
21:04
But. At the same time, you're running
21:06
the risk that these potential offenders. Could.
21:08
Go on to hurt multiple people in addition
21:10
to the people they've already hurt. And
21:13
I just I was. I just wouldn't be willing
21:15
to risk that. And. Obviously I'm very
21:17
passionate about this. You guys know that. So.
21:19
I want to take a second was a school a back
21:21
down of get back into the story but before we do.
21:24

23:35
Rules and restrictions. May apply. Okay,
23:43
we're back. And by this point in the
23:46
story, rumors had been circulating about the possible
23:48
motives of the homicide and the fire. One
23:51
rumor was at the Long family had been
23:53
having money problems and may have owed money
23:55
to certain people which resulted in the incident.
23:58
Reporters. From the flume than spoke with the me. The
24:00
drove one of the lungs restaurants and asked
24:02
about the financial status of the family. The.
24:04
Manager said the family was not having problems with
24:06
money and explained that the family did not like
24:08
to keep their money in the banks because they
24:11
felt like they were able to get a better
24:13
return by investing in real estate. Now.
24:15
On December ninth, Magnus family released a
24:17
statement about her death which read in
24:19
part quote. Our. Hearts are broken.
24:22
And this loss has been especially significant knowing
24:24
the impact on Maggie had on the small
24:26
mountain community. We. Think everyone in
24:29
Bailey as well as those and communities
24:31
near and far that Maggie life has
24:33
touched for their support and love shared.
24:35
Our family continues to work with the
24:37
Park County Sheriff's Office an extended agencies.
24:40
We. Want to thank them for the tremendous efforts.
24:42
We. Are all committed to seeking justice for
24:44
Maggie. Thank. You everyone for sharing
24:46
your strength and kind thoughts with us the
24:49
long family. Over the next
24:51
few months, the Please continued investigating Baggies
24:53
murder. They did not give any
24:55
major updates and the case during this time. On.
24:58
February. Seven, Two thousand and eighteen. The.
25:00
Police held their first public briefing on the
25:02
case. They. Announced the twenty thousand
25:04
dollar reward and shared quite a bit
25:06
of information. They. Revealed that an
25:09
Ak Forty seven. And. Nine millimeter
25:11
Beretta. Two. Thousand rounds of
25:13
ammunition. Jade figurines and a
25:15
large green save with a combination dial
25:18
and a handle were stolen from The
25:20
Lawn Home on December first. The.
25:22
Police also released photos of what these items
25:24
might have looked like. Now.
25:27
Interesting enough, Nine News reported that Serve
25:29
Wagoner was as at this briefing wise
25:31
department said there was no body found
25:33
in the home. When. In fact there
25:35
had been a body found and he didn't have
25:37
a reason feeding. We made our com and will
25:39
live with it. And I have
25:41
to tell you. This saw this comment and
25:43
have to be careful to spur minds be have
25:46
someone that I worked for in. I have to
25:48
tell you I wish this was I like an
25:50
isolated thing. But. This type of
25:52
personality trait in the law enforcement
25:54
beater ship. Community.
25:57
Is. It's. A coin.
26:00
Quip. A lot of. Leaders.
26:03
Go. With this approach as this like they'll
26:05
have to tell you anything. The only people
26:07
that need to know what's going on of
26:09
the people within their walls. And.
26:12
In some situations, that is true. Ah,
26:15
but the. The. Response
26:17
to the media how they how they
26:19
address if. You're. These one
26:21
sentence answers. I personally don't like it.
26:23
Me: Some: maybe some of you. Say.
26:26
Hey I get a i understand it. I've
26:28
seen it from the inside and I, I personally
26:30
was never a fan of it. Now.
26:32
Wagoner was also asked why he waited more
26:34
than two months to go public with the
26:36
information detailing what was stolen from the home.
26:39
He. Said quote. A lot of it
26:41
had to do with the amount of information that we were
26:43
processing. He. Mentioned that investigators had conducted
26:46
a lot of interviews and at obtained dna
26:48
samples from a number of people. But.
26:50
He didn't disclose whether or not that information
26:52
had been helpful. Wagoner. Went on
26:54
to see the based on the information they had gathered.
26:57
They. Were confident that there was no threat to
26:59
anybody else, and while no arrests have been
27:01
made, The police had made
27:03
progress. And. I just or the say it
27:05
again I don't want to sound redundant hear. A
27:07
Don't know how you compute that. I don't
27:10
know how you say definitively. There's.
27:12
No threat to the public, When.
27:14
You don't have anybody in custody.
27:17
And. Even if you. Didn't have someone in
27:19
custody of you. knew. For. Certain.
27:22
Why the lawns were targeted in what
27:24
the motive was behind it you could
27:26
isolated to them than yeah. Maybe you
27:28
can say that. Are based on
27:30
what we know publicly. I don't know how.
27:33
You. Would come to that conclusion and be a
27:35
one hundred percent certain of it. I just
27:37
don't see it. Again, I always
27:39
have to preface it by saying. I.
27:42
Don't have access to the case files? Maybe
27:44
there's something he knows that we don't. So.
27:47
A few months later, on May fourth,
27:49
Official release: A sketch of a white male who
27:51
was seen a maggie thousand a day. She was
27:53
killed. Now. As far as I can
27:55
tell, they didn't include a description of the
27:57
man and no other major information regarding Maggie.
28:00
Murder was released for the rest of the year.
28:03
In. January of two thousand and nineteen. A.
28:05
Newport County sheriff named Com Mcgraw
28:07
took office. At. The end of
28:09
the month, Mcgraw held a press conference where
28:12
he revealed a lot of important details about
28:14
Maggie Case, including the fact that she was
28:16
cool. Purposely. Set on fire and
28:18
burned alive. By. Three male
28:20
suspects. Mcgraw. Said investigators
28:22
believe Maggie came home from school at
28:25
around three pm and walked in on
28:27
a robbery. A physical altercation
28:29
broke out and Maggie was then held
28:31
captive until she and the house were
28:33
set on fire hours later at approximately
28:35
seven pm. Investigators. Theorized
28:38
that the fires were started to
28:40
conceal the physical altercation and the
28:42
robbery. Sheriff. Mcgraw then shared
28:44
a sketch of one of the to new
28:46
suspects and mention that a sketch of the
28:48
third suspect would be released in the following
28:50
months. Mcgraw. Further revealed that
28:52
three vehicles were seen at or near the
28:55
long home at the time of the incident.
28:57
The. Vehicles were described as a white Chevy
29:00
Astro type work fan. And
29:02
early nineties Ford Arrow Star Van.
29:04
In a late eighties Ford F One Fifty.
29:08
Sheriff. Mcgraw announced a new reward of
29:10
fifty thousand dollars and the launch of
29:12
a website run by the Maggie Long
29:14
task force had been initiated. He.
29:17
Stated Quote: We ask the public to
29:19
carefully reviewed the updated information and consider
29:21
whether someone may know could have been
29:23
involved in this incident or whether someone
29:26
they know has demonstrated behavior that could
29:28
be suggested of involvement in this incident.
29:31
Mcgraw caution the public that quote one
29:33
or more of these might have been
29:35
injured in the fire and it was
29:37
possible all three could have significantly altered
29:40
their appearances so their vehicles and possibly
29:42
moved since December of two thousand and
29:44
seventeen. A. Few months later, a sketch
29:46
of the third suspect wanted in connection to
29:49
Maggie is murder was released as promise. Before.
29:51
The end of the year, the F B I
29:53
announced that a fourth person may have been involved
29:55
in baggies murder as well. They. Said
29:58
quote it could be a male or. Mail.
30:00
but we believe this possibly a fourth person
30:02
that is either involved in the burglary on
30:04
December first two thousand and seventeen. Or.
30:07
That might be a key witness that we would like to talk
30:09
to. Now. There isn't much info
30:11
out there about the potential for suspect and
30:13
from what I can tell know sketch was
30:15
ever released. More than a year later
30:18
and may have Twenty Twenty one. The. F
30:20
B. I announced that the investigation into
30:22
Maggie death was been reclassified as a
30:24
quote hate crime matter and award was
30:26
being up to seventy five thousand dollars.
30:29
Now interesting enough: Maggie is older
30:31
sisters mean and Connie. Told.
30:33
The Associated Press that they did not
30:35
notice any over Asian discrimination when they
30:37
lived in the Be We community. With.
30:39
That being said, the sisters were hopeful
30:42
that this reclassification would bring new light
30:44
to a cold case. Mean.
30:46
A stated quote. This is an angle
30:48
that wasn't looked into in the past, and
30:50
at this point there's no stone left unturned.
30:53
Looking at the extent of the violence in this
30:55
crime, that is certainly an angle to look more
30:57
closely into. County Further shared
30:59
with the New York Times that the
31:01
F B I investigator explain to her
31:04
that the choice to reclassify maggie homicide
31:06
as a hate crime was not influenced
31:08
by any particular development in the ongoing
31:10
investigation. He was a strategic
31:12
decision that would provide additional funds and
31:14
resources for law enforcement to enhance their
31:16
efforts in solving the case. And I
31:18
just wanna. Piggyback. Off
31:21
of that because when I was initially hearing it.
31:23
And. Reading about this before I got to the
31:26
segment. That. Part right there. I didn't
31:28
know they would disclose that publicly. When. I
31:30
first heard that it was reclassified as a hate
31:32
crime. I said to myself, oh. They're
31:34
looking for more funds, you know? Obviously with a
31:36
hate crime, the government funding that comes in for
31:38
it and obviously had some. It's. A
31:41
term. It's obviously it's it's horrible. but
31:43
it's a term and any and a
31:45
type of crime that it There's a
31:47
high. Level. Of priority put
31:49
on a by the government right now. So
31:51
whenever it a crime gets reclassified or is
31:53
initially classified. As a hate crime
31:56
is a different level of. Severity.
31:58
That put on it. With. Would. Allow.
32:01
Investigators to pull more funding to get
32:03
the resources they need to potentially solve
32:05
the case. so I've seen as done
32:07
before. And it's it's. in some
32:10
cases a good move. The. Only
32:12
argument that I've seen against it is.
32:14
By. Reclassifying cases. That.
32:17
You don't believe our hate crimes.
32:19
You could potentially be taking away
32:21
from real real hate crimes. and
32:23
I absolutely see that angle and
32:25
I I really don't have an
32:27
argument for it's. That. That the
32:29
potential is there when you're. Implore You
32:31
know, employing these types of tactics. Now.
32:33
With all that being said, unfortunately as
32:35
far as the family can tell, The.
32:38
Reclassification did not lead to any
32:40
major developments in Maggie Case. And.
32:43
By December of Twenty Twenty Two, Five.
32:45
Years had passed since Maggie was murdered. To.
32:48
Mark the somber occasion, police handed out
32:50
flyers and stickers across the county. Postcards.
32:53
With information about Maggie were also mail
32:55
to the be we residents. Are.
32:57
Detective on the task force also spoke
33:00
with nine news about were the case
33:02
was currently. Bitter. The force
33:04
was still actively investigating Baggies murder, however
33:06
they were quote kind of backing off
33:08
the sketches that were released initially. They.
33:11
Were no longer putting much credence into them.
33:14
And. As far as why that's the case,
33:16
Again, Without having access to the
33:18
files. I really can't tell
33:21
you. I will say we've had the sketches
33:23
up in this episode. They're pretty vague. The.
33:25
Not very descriptive. does know distinguishable
33:28
marks on either of the. From.
33:30
Individuals that have been released or the
33:32
three individuals that have been released night,
33:34
I think someone would look getting. That.
33:37
Looks like so and so. I guess if you
33:39
knew them personally and really well, maybe. But.
33:42
On, there must have been
33:44
contradicting information that came in
33:46
that discredited the initial report.
33:48
Or. As I said earlier, It.
33:51
It depends on the source. right? It
33:53
depends on the person you're getting the information
33:55
from. I. Don't know what the
33:57
situation was with tim. Some
34:00
of the other things reading about him
34:02
I don't know what his mindset was.
34:04
I know that again, he was refusing
34:07
to leave the apartment until firefighters basically
34:09
kicked them and he came walking out
34:11
with his cat. But if that was
34:13
their source and he was going back
34:15
and forth on what he observed or
34:17
what he heard, The. More
34:19
he does that, the less credible those statements
34:22
become. Now for the five year
34:24

34:26
read in part quote. Maggie. Deserves

35:32
the latest information we have in

35:36

35:38

35:41
Then set her on fire while she was still

Brian Okay. So now my perspective on this case
36:58
in his to be a long as the have
37:00
a lot of bullet points. I
37:02
don't really have a synopsis, I just want to try to
37:05
jump around. So. Hopefully it all
37:07
makes sense as a put it out the just my
37:09
thoughts on this case. With. The limited information
37:11
that we do know because although we have some
37:13
specific so. I can promise you
37:15
this do a lot behind closed doors that
37:17
we don't know books without being you know
37:19
the qualifier. First. I want to
37:22
start with someone we mentioned early in the
37:24
episode but haven't met mentioned much since, which
37:26
is Tim. And I'm sure
37:28
a lot of you are asking yourself. Was
37:30
Tim vetted. You. Know do we know
37:32
that? Tim? Isn't. A suspected Tim
37:34
wasn't the one who did this good
37:36
to me going downstairs. Attacked
37:39
Maggie killed her. And
37:41
then set the house on fire to kind
37:43
of throw people off the trail. Go.
37:45
Back up into his apartment and then call the
37:48
police and say that all these things were happening
37:50
in there was a fire being sucked because I
37:52
wrote a know he knew a lot of. Information.
37:56
About what was going on in the
37:58
in the downstairs floor. I. Don't know. Often
38:00
the walls were what he could hear by.
38:02
it just seemed like he had a lot
38:04
of information. And my I My
38:06
initial thought is he gonna. Look.
38:08
At the guy who actually in the house when all
38:10
this went down as a potential suspect, right? And
38:13
I'm sure a lot of you did the same thing.
38:15
So. I. Wanna put that out there? Because.
38:18
After putting that out there that I'm in a kind of.
38:20
This. Credit my own, my own thought process and
38:23
and the reason I'm able to do that.
38:25
Is because it's it. Seems like
38:27
it's pretty concrete information that the
38:30
Ak Forty seven. The. Nine
38:32
millimeter Beretta. Two. Thousand rounds
38:34
and ammo which by the way is
38:36
a lot and it would be heavy armed
38:38
the figurines and then also most importantly
38:40
this large. Green Safe. They
38:42
probably confirmed to family members that this
38:44
was there when they left earlier that
38:46
day. Now it's gone and that's how
38:48
they were able to do what was
38:50
taken. And. This
38:52
tells you to things obviously does suggest
38:54
that more than likely was a robbery
38:56
and not a staged robbery. And.
38:59
I see that from a commonsensical perspective
39:01
of. It. A try to stage a robbery. You
39:03
can take some smaller things and get out of air. You're.
39:05
Not going to take the frickin' most heaviest thing in
39:07
the house. That would make no sense at all. The.
39:10
Only reason you would take a safe is because you
39:12
felt something of value was inside of it. Which.
39:14
Brings me to another point. Because.
39:18
On. One hand you could say? Well,
39:20
It couldn't have been to him because he was there
39:23
the whole time. So. How could he have
39:25
remove the stuff and still gotten back to the house
39:27
in time to do? all this? Unless
39:29
it was like premeditated that was happening all day.
39:31
But. I think that's a stretch. But.
39:34
I but brings up another angle here that I
39:36
don't know if anybody's really thought about. I'm
39:38
hoping that law enforcement did. If.
39:42
This was a robbery. Okay,
39:44
let's go back to the long family home. Twenty.
39:47
Seven Acres think I said earlier. Twenty
39:50
Seven Acres. This was a huge property
39:52
off a main road, but really setback.
39:55
Really off the beaten path. Who.
39:58
would know about what's back there More
40:01
importantly, who would know about what's
40:03
inside that residence, specifically what a
40:05
value is inside that residence? In
40:08
many situations when we have a
40:10
robbery and the person
40:12
has a safe or a lot of money or
40:15
guns or something of value in their home, it's
40:18
usually an inside job, right? Or
40:21
that person had bragged about what they
40:23
had to people in the community and
40:25
it got back to them. They
40:28
started to figure out when they could go
40:30
there because think about all the
40:32
elements of what we're dealing with here. The
40:36
father was out of town. The
40:38
mother was at work. The
40:40
sisters weren't home. And
40:43
it was kind of probably not expected for Maggie
40:45
to come home. She came home just to change.
40:48
So I think it's very plausible that the theory the
40:51
police are running with is right. She walked in on
40:53
a robbery. The question I have
40:55
is how do they know what was inside of
40:57
there? Did Maggie
40:59
know her attackers? Were these
41:01
people who had worked on the house prior? Were
41:04
they construction workers who had been in the house
41:06
to do something else or around the property and
41:08
had noticed that they had
41:10
expensive items inside the residence? I
41:13
would want to look into any work that had been
41:15
done on that property. It's a big property. So I'm
41:17
assuming they had landscapers and maintenance
41:19
men, et cetera. So obviously
41:22
you'd want to investigate all of them
41:24
and their acquaintances. But just
41:26
to play another angle here, again,
41:28
not knowing Tim personally or not being able
41:31
to interview him, is there
41:33
a scenario where he tipped someone off about
41:36
what was in the house, about what he had seen, and
41:39
maybe said to someone he knows, whether
41:41
it was maliciously or just speaking, running
41:44
his mouth, right? He might have
41:46
said that there's a lot in the house and they got a lot of
41:48
money and they keep a lot of their money in the safe. We
41:50
talked about that earlier. They didn't believe in banks. So
41:53
if that information was out there and
41:56
Tim or someone close to them knew about it, they
41:58
could have tipped the... assailants off
42:02
that now was the time to come
42:04
and it brings me back to my point who
42:07
would know better that it was the right time to come
42:09
than a person who was staying at the home. Now
42:12
I want to qualify this by saying I don't
42:14
have any concrete evidence against him and obviously as I said
42:16
at the top of the show that's not even his real
42:18
name but it's a possible scenario and
42:21
I'm sure it's been explored but I
42:23
could also make another argument where when
42:26
detectives started to search and talk to people
42:28
in the community about their
42:30
financial potential financial problems with the
42:32
longs as I said in this episode
42:34
which is why I wanted it in there one
42:37
of the managers who again is someone who's
42:39
close to them they're obviously an administrative role
42:41
but they were even aware that the longs
42:43
were someone who didn't keep money in the
42:45
banks they wanted to invest it in real
42:48
estate and more than likely that meant that
42:50
they had more cash on hand at
42:52
the home in a community
42:54
like that word can travel fast
42:57
and again it may not be
42:59
someone you're directly connected to but if it gets
43:01
back to a group of individuals with nothing to
43:03
lose they could come up with
43:05
a plan to attack you and your family when
43:08
you're home or even when or when you're not home and
43:11
just to kind of explore the whole construction
43:13
worker maintenance man landscape
43:15
or theory a little bit more think
43:17
about the potential suspect vehicles that we're
43:20
talking about here two vans and
43:22
a pickup truck could these individuals
43:24
work in that type of field and that's
43:26
why they drive those cars that's possible I'll
43:29
also say that I don't know how these cars would
43:31
be linked to these crimes if they didn't have something
43:34
definitive at the property that would prove
43:37
these vehicles were there right they they're they're
43:39
pretty sure about the fact that it was
43:41
three individuals that's how they're coming
43:43
up with the number of three suspects right only
43:46
one person can drive each vehicle so at
43:48
minimum there's three now they're saying there was
43:50
potentially four which would mean there was a
43:52
passenger in one of the vehicles I would
43:56
assume most of this
43:58
information would be coming
44:00
from Tim, I don't know how it would come from anybody
44:02
else. Unless they have a confidential witness
44:04
or a confidential informant that
44:06
they're keeping under wraps right now who is close
44:08
by maybe on the property working and just
44:11
doesn't want to have their information out there. That
44:13
is very possible. And finally, as far
44:15
as the sketches, I kind of said it in the episode.
44:17
They were pretty vague. I
44:19
think that talking to this witness,
44:22
there might have been something there that caused
44:25
pause where they started to question what
44:27
this individual had said. I've said in
44:29
other episodes where you'll have witnesses who
44:31
want to be helpful. And
44:33
instead of telling you what they know, they tell you what
44:35
they think or what they kind
44:37
of remember, that's not good for the case.
44:40
Yeah, their heart is in the right place, but
44:42
it only hurts us. Because if we're
44:44
building an investigation off something that the
44:47
source is not even sure is
44:49
accurate, that's a problem. I
44:52
would rather have minimal factual
44:54
information than an
44:57
abundance of potentially accurate
44:59
information, if you know what I mean. I'd
45:01
rather know for sure what I'm
45:03
dealing with, what puzzle pieces I have on the table,
45:06
or at least from the same
45:08
puzzle, right? You don't want to have a
45:11
mixture because there's really no way to know
45:13
until you start building it, you could go
45:15
all the way down that path and find
45:17
out well down the road that you're
45:19
working with three different cases here and some of
45:21
it's not even accurate, and that's a big problem.
45:23
So again, them going
45:26
back and re-questioning other
45:28
individuals along with this
45:31
main witness, there may
45:33
be some indications that the
45:35
illustrations that were created based off the
45:37
descriptions that were given
45:40
at the time, the descriptions themselves may not be
45:42
accurate, which could be actually narrowing
45:44
their suspect pool, right? They're looking for
45:46
white males, they could be
45:48
a different ethnicity, they could look different than
45:51
the picture itself. So now they're looking for
45:53
certain individuals with those types of vehicles, and
45:55
they could be looking in the wrong direction.
45:58
So as far as where we go with this case, I've said
46:00
throughout the episode, you have local,
46:02
state, and federal agents already working on it.
46:05
So it's all hands on deck. There's a lot of money
46:07
and resources being devoted to this case. So
46:09
I'd like to think that most of what I'm going to say
46:11
is being currently worked on or has been looked into. Obviously,
46:14
they're going to keep an eye on the
46:17
stolen items. More than likely, those items will never
46:19
end up in a pawn shop. But maybe
46:21
if you're lucky, if a criminal gets stupid, a
46:24
witness who has no involvement, walks into a
46:26
house, remembers these things being put out
46:28
there, and sees one of these items in the
46:31
home, and decides to do the right
46:33
thing and report it. I'm also
46:35
hopeful that even though it was a fire and
46:37
it probably destroyed a lot of the evidence, there
46:40
may have been some DNA evidence recovered
46:42
from the scene. Because
46:44
most likely, that's why they're seizing DNA from the
46:46
people they're speaking to because they have something
46:49
to compare it to. At least that's my
46:51
hope. And then finally, they're going
46:53
to be looking at help from you guys. They're going
46:55
to be looking at help from people in that community
46:58
who may know something. And I would say to everyone out
47:00
there who may be from that area,
47:03
even though the sketches they're backing off of them,
47:07
let's put those to the side for a
47:09
second. Let's think about these vehicles because they sound
47:11
more convinced about the three vehicles. Think
47:14
about people in your life, acquaintances of
47:16
yours. And sometimes you'll have
47:18
groups of individuals who hang out together, whether
47:20
they're colleagues or just buddies that hang out
47:22
at the Bowen Alley, who knows. But
47:25
maybe you think about someone like, oh, you
47:27
know, this guy had an F-150 and his
47:29
friend so-and-so drove a van.
47:31
And actually, his other friend drove an
47:33
Astro van. It could be that
47:35
connection. The sketches may look nothing
47:37
like these guys. But if you know a group
47:40
of individuals that hang out that at the time
47:42
of this incident, because I can promise you they
47:44
don't have these cars anymore, we're
47:47
driving vehicles like that. Call
47:49
local authorities, call the state police, let
47:52
them know what's going on, And give
47:54
them the information and then let them decide
47:56
whether it's useful or not. When
48:00
that you have all the information. When
48:02
recap the case really quickly on December
48:04
first, two thousand and seventeen. Seventeen.
48:06
Year old Maggie Long was found murdered in
48:09
her burned home. Located. In the
48:11
thirty seven hundred block of County Road
48:13
Forty Three. Mb. Lee, Colorado.
48:15
She. Had been physically assaulted and then set
48:18
on fire while she was still alive.
48:20
And. Eighty Forty Seven. And nine
48:23
millimeter Beretta. Two. Thousand rounds
48:25
of ammunition. Jade figurines and
48:27
a large green save with a combination
48:29
dial and a handle were stolen from
48:31
the long Home. There
48:33
are three to four on identified suspects
48:35
in this case. And. They were
48:37
potentially driving a white Chevy Astro type
48:40
work van. And. Early Nineties
48:42
Ford Arrow Starve and. And.
48:44
A late eighties Ford F One fifty.
48:47
Two. Of you have any information about this
48:49
case. You're. Asked to call the Maggie
48:51
Long Task Force. Tip line. At three
48:53
O three. Two. Three Nine. Four.
48:56
Two, four, three, The. Remember.
49:00
A. Seventy five thousand dollar reward is
49:02
still available. And. That's going to do it
49:04
for this week case. I. Want to some
49:06
my thoughts out to the long family. This
49:08
is obviously a horrific murder. All murders obviously
49:10
a horrific. But. Just to
49:12
think about how Maggie was taken from us,
49:15
the manner in which it was done. On
49:17
her family as the live With that and there's
49:20
nothing that you are right can do to change
49:22
that. But. What we can
49:24
do. Is. Try.
49:26
To give him the answers they deserve. They're
49:28
still fighting. As I said at the end
49:30
of this episode, where going to continue fighting
49:32
And hopefully someone out there whether you're watching
49:34
or listening. Has information that can
49:36
be critical and helping crack this case.
49:39
I. Want everyone to stay safe out there before I
49:41
go. I just want to remind you because we're
49:43
getting closer. To. The End: Ah,
49:45
Seasons of Justice. Okay, I had
49:48
asked initially for a thousand dollars.
49:50
We've. Already surpassed that rub the one thousand
49:52
and fifty five dollars. I think I have
49:55
one more episode after this for the month
49:57
of January and then it's over. I think
49:59
it's. The fifteen hundred right now. I'd
50:02
love to hit it. You know, I'd love to hit
50:04
the fifteen hundred of we don't That's okay, but if
50:06
you haven't donated yeah, you have a dollar or two
50:08
dollars or five hours it you'd like to donate. It.
50:10
Be greatly appreciated. And if you're watching on you
50:13
tube make sure you let me know if you
50:15
donated. I've already responded to a couple the I
50:17
really do appreciate it and I'm just gonna give
50:19
you the information for the website again. it's going
50:22
to be up on the screen right here by.
50:24
for those audio listeners of my make it a
50:26
little a little easier for you guys. I'm also
50:28
going give you the the phone number because you
50:31
