1:01

been identified, a motive or a suspect

1:03

leave and Rachel's family desperate for answers.

1:06

It's. Been almost two years since Rachel was

1:08

killed. And investigators are still

1:10

searching for the person responsible. Hey

1:42

everyone welcome back to detect a prospective.

1:45

My. Name is Derek Lowe Vassar.

1:47

I'm a licensed private investigator and

1:49

former police detective. And. Each week

1:51

I'll be covering an unsolved case and story

1:53

format. Or. then give you my

1:56

perspective on the investigation and provide

1:58

contact information for the in individuals

2:00

or organizations connected to the case so that

2:02

if you have any tips you can contact

2:05

them directly and maybe you can help solve

2:07

a case. So if you're

2:09

someone who's interested in true crime

2:11

specifically unsolved cases and you would

2:13

like to hear my opinion on

2:16

those investigations please consider subscribing whether

2:18

you're watching on YouTube or listening

2:20

on Apple Podcast or Spotify or

2:22

whatever platform you use. Okay,

2:24

so Rachel Hansen, I'm not gonna spend

2:26

too much time on this opening because

2:29

this case is an

2:32

absolute head scratcher. As

2:34

I mentioned in the trailer this case

2:36

occurred in Not

2:39

long ago. A lot of technology,

2:41

a lot of science available and

2:44

yet here we are someone

2:46

broke into her apartment. She

2:48

was shot dead. She was able to call

2:50

in her own incident

2:53

and yet we still don't know

2:56

who's responsible. I've looked at this case.

2:58

I've read some of the the paperwork and

3:00

the articles surrounding it. Although there's not a

3:02

ton out there because it's still relatively new

3:05

but from everything I've seen just nobody

3:07

really knows. Nobody has a clue

3:09

what happened to Rachel, but that's not

3:11

gonna stop us. The reason why I'm

3:13

covering it is because of that. Nobody

3:15

knows what happened and that's why we're

3:17

covering it. I'm hoping that by exposing

3:19

you to what happened to Rachel you

3:22

or someone you know will

3:24

see this video or listen to this audio and

3:28

decide to come forward. Whether it

3:30

was something you saw that could be

3:33

connected or you have direct information. I'm

3:35

hoping that by us going over this that

3:38

even if you don't know if you

3:40

have information something in this episode triggers

3:42

something in you that causes you to

3:44

come forward. Maybe we

3:46

get lucky. We only need one good piece

3:48

of evidence to maybe get that ball rolling

3:50

and get some positive results in this investigation.

3:52

So with that out of the way, let's

3:55

dive into this week's case. Rachel

3:57

Ann Hanson was born on June 12th.

4:02

2012, 2002. When she was a toddler, her birth mother

4:04

abandoned her and her younger sister. After

4:06

that, they both went into foster care,

4:09

which was a very traumatizing

4:11

experience for Rachel. In early 2008,

4:14

five-year-old Rachel and her sister were fostered

4:16

by a couple named Kim and Todd

4:18

Hanson from Gilbert, Arizona. Three

4:21

months later, on May 14, the

4:23

Hanson's officially adopted the sisters. This

4:26

was a life-changing day for Rachel and years

4:28

later, she got the date tattooed on her

4:30

arm in Roman numerals. On

4:32

June 12, 2008, around a month after

4:34

the adoption, Rachel celebrated her

4:37

sixth birthday. It was around

4:39

this time that she became really interested in

4:41

horses. Wanting to support Rachel

4:43

in every way possible, Kim and

4:45

Todd got her a horse, and she absolutely loved

4:47

it. Despite never

4:49

taking riding lessons, Rachel was a natural.

4:52

Kim later told the Gilbert Sun News, quote, she

4:54

had a gift. She was very good

4:56

with horses. She'd never met a horse she

4:59

couldn't get on. Not

5:01

only was Rachel good with horses, being around them

5:03

also helped her deal with the trauma she went

5:05

through when her birth mother left and she went

5:07

into foster care, and obviously Kim

5:09

and Todd were happy to see that their daughter was

5:12

finally working through that trauma. Aside

5:14

from her love of horses, Rachel was

5:16

known for being incredibly caring, kind, and

5:18

full of love. One friend

5:20

said, quote, it was hard to have a

5:23

bad day around Rachel. She was the

5:25

sweetest person and no doubt was

5:27

a lot of people's best friend. Rachel

5:30

also loved helping people and animals. She

5:32

took part in many fundraisers to raise money

5:34

for different causes. Kim told

5:36

the Gilbert Sun News that at 10 years

5:39

old, Rachel pulled a wagon

5:41

around the neighborhood to ask neighbors for food to

5:43

donate. Rachel also dreamed of owning

5:45

a dog rescue one day, but until

5:47

then, she and Kim helped foster dogs who

5:49

were waiting there forever homes. By

5:52

the time Rachel was 14, she was teaching horse

5:54

riding lessons, and when she wasn't doing

5:56

that, she was active in sports like

5:58

wrestling, soccer, and football. ball. At

6:01

only 16 years old, Rachel graduated

6:03

from high school ahead of schedule. Then

6:05

she started her own business where she

6:08

trained, hauled, sold, and found horses for

6:10

clients. She also rescued wild

6:12

mustangs from federal land and horses that had

6:15

been abused by their owners. She

6:17

was living her dream. By

6:19

the spring of 2022, 19-year-old

6:21

Rachel was ready to grow her business even

6:23

further. ABC 15 reported that

6:26

she obtained her real estate license so

6:28

she could help clients find homes with

6:30

room for livestock and horses. While

6:32

this was all taking place, Rachel was also

6:34

engaged to a man named Jo Matt and

6:36

they had plans for a fall wedding. However,

6:40

things took a turnaround May when

6:42

Rachel's prized horse, Dash, was stolen

6:44

from her property in Queen Creek,

6:46

Arizona. Dash's staff was

6:48

particularly upsetting because she was pregnant, something

6:51

Rachel was very excited about. She

6:53

immediately notified the police and began efforts to

6:55

recover the horse. At

6:58

the start of June, Dash was still missing.

7:01

On June 2, Rachel moved into

7:03

an apartment at 1900 South Coronado

7:05

Road in Gilbert, Arizona. The

7:08

apartment was conveniently located near Santan Village

7:10

Parkway in Ray Road, just three miles

7:12

from her parents' home. Rachel

7:14

had actually lived in this apartment in 2021, however, in December

7:18

of that year, she subleased it out. Then in

7:20

late spring of 2022, she asked the current occupants

7:24

if she could move back in and

7:26

they agreed. On Friday,

7:28

June 3, Rachel's fiance, Jo Matt,

7:30

visited her at the apartment. They

7:33

enjoyed dinner together, went to the apartment

7:35

complex's pool, and watched a movie. Rachel's

7:38

mom, Kim, later told ABC 15 that

7:41

she spoke to Rachel on the phone

7:43

at around 9 p.m. that night. Rachel

7:45

seemed completely normal. She was happy about her

7:48

new apartment and expressed feeling safer and happier

7:50

being closer to home. Before

7:52

getting off the phone, Kim told Rachel that she

7:54

would come over on Sunday and help her unpack.

7:57

They exchanged, I love yous, then hung up.

8:00

Kim had no idea they would never speak again. At

8:04

around midnight, Jomet left Rachel's apartment because he

8:06

had to be up early the next morning.

8:09

This is the last time he would ever see her. Around

8:13

two hours later, at 2 am, on what

8:15

was now June 4th, Rachel called 911

8:17

and reported that a quote

8:19

unknown person had entered her apartment while

8:21

she was sleeping and shot her one

8:23

time. According to the

8:25

Gilbert Sun News, she had been on her back when

8:27

she was shown. Due to this

8:29

angle, the bullet entered her lower left abdomen

8:31

and exited through her top right shoulder. After

8:34

shooting Rachel, the gunman fled the scene. Rachel

8:37

managed to get out of bed, grab her cell phone and

8:39

call 911. She

8:41

then made her way to the bathroom, likely to try

8:43

and attend to her wound. When first

8:45

responders arrived, they found Rachel on the bathroom

8:48

floor. She was rushed to

8:50

the hospital where surgeons worked on her for three

8:52

hours to try and save her life, but tragically

8:54

their efforts were in vain. Rachel

8:57

was pronounced dead that morning, just

8:59

eight days before her 20th birthday. We're

9:02

going to continue on with this case, but before

9:04

we do, let's hear from this week's sponsor, Fume.

9:12

Ever try to break a bad habit and feel like you're

9:14

climbing Mount Everest in flip flops? Yeah, I've

9:16

been there too, but here's a breath of fresh air.

9:19

It's Fume. And it's not about giving

9:21

up, it's about switching up. Fume takes

9:23

your bad habit and simply makes it better, healthier

9:25

and a whole lot more enjoyable. Fume

9:27

is an innovative, award-winning flavored air device

9:30

that does just that. Instead

9:32

of vapor, Fume uses flavored air. Instead

9:35

of electronics, Fume is completely natural

9:37

and instead of harmful chemicals, Fume

9:39

uses delicious flavors. You get it.

9:42

Instead of bad, Fume is good. It's a habit

9:44

you're free to enjoy and makes replacing your bad

9:46

habit that much easier. Fume comes

9:49

with an adjustable air flow dial and

9:51

is designed with movable parts and magnets

9:53

for fidgeting, giving your fingers a lot

9:55

to do, which is helpful for de-stressing

9:58

and anxiety while breaking your habit. Now

10:00

for me, I've talked about it before. I love

10:03

the design of this thing. The aesthetic

10:05

is great. It's well balanced in my

10:08

hand. It feels solid and I'm someone

10:10

even if you're watching this episode on

10:12

YouTube I usually have a pen

10:14

in my hand while I'm talking to you guys

10:16

and that's because I need it to stay focused.

10:19

So the fume is a nice supplement to that

10:21

in my personal life. I like how it looks

10:23

with all my other stuff. I have a lot

10:25

of wood products or leather products

10:27

and so this pairs well with it. And like

10:30

I said, you can just tell it's really well

10:32

made and then on top of the look you

10:34

also have the taste and I have to tell

10:36

you it's much more flavorful than

10:38

I thought it would be and it just

10:40

feels fresh. I've been mixing

10:42

it up between the orange vanilla and the

10:44

raspberry lemon and the

10:46

best way I can describe it is it's

10:49

it's not as sweet as you

10:52

would expect. It just feels very natural

10:55

and I really do enjoy that. So I'm really

10:57

enjoying fume. I think you will as well. So

10:59

start the year off right with a good habit

11:01

by going to trifume.com slash

11:03

detective and getting the journey pack

11:05

today. Fume is giving my listeners and

11:08

viewers of this show 10%

11:10

off when you use my code detective to

11:12

help make starting the good habit that much

11:14

easier. One more time that's

11:16

trifume.com/detective to get 10% off

11:19

and if you want to support me make sure you

11:21

support them. Now back to the case. Okay,

11:29

so back at Rachel's apartment the police worked to

11:31

piece together the events leading up to her tragic

11:33

death. According to the Gilbert

11:36

Sun News, it was unclear how Rachel's

11:38

killer entered the apartment. The front

11:40

door was reportedly shut when police arrived so

11:43

they were unsure if it had been left

11:45

unlocked or if the gunman had a key.

11:47

Now with that being said I do want

11:49

to mention that Rachel's parents have said that

11:52

Rachel's apartment door had been kicked in. They

11:54

also said that nothing appeared to have been

11:57

stolen, but That's coming from them. Obviously

11:59

They're talking. With police. So again

12:01

we have two different versions year. I

12:03

want to make you aware of both.

12:06

Now, the police did conduct a

12:08

thorough search for surveillance cameras, but

12:10

unfortunately, Rachel's apartment complex only had

12:12

cameras installed in the common areas

12:14

of the building, not in any

12:16

hallways. This. Meant that the gunman had

12:18

not been captured on video at all. And

12:21

at the stop real quick and just say. That.

12:23

This is. Insane. I know

12:25

there's no. Civil. Liability. In

12:27

this case, they don't have to do it.

12:30

But. I think at this point, especially

12:32

with the world that we live in

12:34

and how inexpensive security systems are at

12:36

this point. Are. You can get

12:39

a pretty inexpensive system that would generically cover

12:41

the hallway or at least the. Entry.

12:43

And exit doors of those hallways for

12:45

relatively reasonable price especially with all the

12:48

money or making from me from the

12:50

renters. So at this point I almost

12:52

think it should be a requirement for

12:54

the safety any insurance of the building.

12:57

That. Camera systems are installed in a

12:59

way where if anyone enters or exits

13:01

the building, their captured at least for

13:03

a few seconds on camera. Not saying

13:05

every door, I'm not saying they have

13:07

to be super hi rez. But.

13:09

There should be a requirement for the safety

13:11

of the residents and for the insurance purposes

13:14

of the building itself. Where. Anyone

13:16

who enters that building should be captured

13:18

on camera, at least for a few

13:20

seconds. Now. Although the

13:22

lack of surveillance footage was a

13:25

setback, the police interviewed Rachel's neighbors,

13:27

but surprisingly. None. Of them

13:29

reported hearing anything suspicious including

13:31

a gunshot. They. Also spoke

13:33

with the people who had been subleasing

13:35

Rachel's apartment just before she moved back

13:38

in. However, it's unclear if this lead

13:40

went anywhere. Now. There's two

13:42

things to talk about. their. First.

13:44

Off the neighbors not hearing anything.

13:47

Depending. On what type of caliber

13:49

it was and depending on the insulation

13:51

between the buildings between the apartments and

13:53

what type of dry wall was used

13:56

I don't know if there's a certain

13:58

code as far as so. Proving

14:00

that needs to be in those buildings for

14:02

get out. So obviously there's not a transmission

14:05

of sounds going from one apartment to the

14:07

other. It is possible that with a low

14:09

caliber weapon. They. Wouldn't have heard

14:11

anything although. It. Is surprising

14:13

to me that if you're in your apartment

14:16

in your sleeping, you wouldn't hear a pop

14:18

or something. However, I can also

14:20

see a side where if your sound asleep at

14:22

two in the morning and is the subtle bangs.

14:25

Being in an apartment complex I have

14:27

a I will say sometimes you become

14:29

accustomed to those. Odd. Noises in

14:31

those ah to play sounds and you just kind of.

14:33

It's dismiss. I'm. I'm so that is

14:36

also possible as well. All. Of,

14:38

it's very unfortunate you know, surveillance

14:40

footage and no witnesses were obviously

14:42

not off to a good start.

14:44

And as far as the people

14:46

that were living in the apartment

14:48

before Rachel moved back in ominously

14:50

that till the and from my

14:52

perspective. So. Yes, the witnesses

14:54

at the apartment where a dead end, but

14:56

the police continued interviewing people who knew Rachel

14:59

in the hopes of figuring out a possible

15:01

motive. But it. Was an easy.

15:03

Rachel. Seem to be universally loved by

15:05

everyone who knew her. She had no known

15:08

enemies or conflicts that would lead to someone

15:10

wanting to hurt her, and she wasn't involved

15:12

in any illegal activities. Because. Of

15:14

this is seemed unclear why anyone would want

15:17

to her. Rachel. For. Murder was

15:19

a shock to her loved ones and the community.

15:21

Gilbert. Was considered a relatively safe area

15:24

to live, and murders were a rare

15:26

occurrence. In fact, Rachel's death marked only

15:28

the second murdering Gilbert that year. The

15:30

first occurred in January when a woman

15:32

was fatally shot by her roommate. Rachel's

15:35

Front Hayden told A B C Fifteen

15:37

Arizona that she couldn't understand why someone would

15:40

want to kill her. She said quote.

15:42

Rachel. Was the most selfless, kind hearted,

15:44

sweet person. I. Was just in

15:46

shock and I'm still in shock. And. I'm

15:48

not quite ready to accept the fact that she's

15:50

gone. Rachel's. Friends Cheyenne

15:53

told Arizona family that she was also shocked

15:55

by Rachel's murder. She couldn't figure out why

15:57

someone would want to kill such a sweet

15:59

person. However, So

16:01

you had a message for Rachel's killer? She.

16:04

Said quote. She. Was nineteen,

16:06

She. Had her whole life ahead of her and you took

16:08

it away. You. Didn't give her a

16:10

chance to show everybody who she was and what

16:13

she was capable of. You. Didn't give her

16:15

the chance to grow as a person. You.

16:17

Didn't even give her a chance to find out who

16:19

she truly was. You. Took that from her.

16:22

You. Took that from her in every way and

16:24

shape and form. And it's not ok. it's not

16:26

all right. She. Deserves justice.

16:29

Obviously, as expected, people on social

16:32

media speculated about what they thought

16:34

it happened to Rachel. And. Some

16:36

believed her murder was linked to the theft

16:38

of her horse-which I mentioned earlier in

16:40

this episode. One. Commenter

16:42

said quote she received threats from the

16:44

persons who stole her horse. They had

16:46

been harassing her over posts she made.

16:49

She. Was selling or things because someone had

16:51

stolen or horse and was demanding ransom to

16:53

have it returned. Another. Commenter

16:55

wrote quote. I feel it was the

16:57

people that still the horse and made many threats. They.

16:59

Wanted ransom money was threatening her. From

17:02

think these books, it's an ugly situation.

17:05

Now. All that being said, it should

17:07

be noted that the police have not

17:09

confirmed any of the details mentioned in

17:11

his comments. They have only said the

17:13

are considering various motives and diligently pursuing

17:16

all leads in tips. Now. As

17:18

police continue their investigation, Rachel's.

17:20

Loved ones were morning her loss. Or

17:23

fiance Geomapped moved in with the Hansen's

17:25

for three months because it helped him

17:27

feel close to Rachel. Even.

17:29

After john that moved out. He. Still,

17:31

visited the Hansen's for dinner almost every

17:33

night. In late July

17:35

he spoke to Twelve News about his

17:37

grief stating quote. Just. Getting through

17:40

my days. Just waking up every day

17:42

not to see her by my side. That's.

17:44

All I woke up to every day. We.

17:46

Were supposed to get married. I. Was supposed

17:48

to spend my whole life with Rachel. And

17:51

now I just have to live. Rachel's.

17:53

Mom Kim also spoke to Twelve News about the

17:55

loss of her daughter. She. Said

17:57

quote. I was absolutely in shock.

18:00

Just. Really hard. I. Just miss her

18:02

so much. She was such a huge part

18:04

of my world. And. It's just so

18:06

very difficult not only missing her. But.

18:08

Not understanding such a senseless act. Now

18:11

it is worth noting that Kim also mention

18:13

that while police were falling all leads at

18:16

this point, it looked like Rachel's murder and

18:18

the theft of or horse were unrelated. Can.

18:21

Went on to reveal that-was found and

18:23

was living with her now. She.

18:25

Didn't provide any further details. Unfortunately,

18:28

after that, there were few updates and

18:30

Rachel's case over the following months. To.

18:33

Memorialize Rachel Her parents got tattoos

18:35

that reminded them of their beloved

18:37

daughter. Todd statue featured

18:39

the Roman numerals for June Fourth,

18:41

twenty twenty Two representing the day

18:43

of rentals death. Now some of

18:45

you may find that odd. I know. When I first

18:47

heard it, I was a little taken aback by it.

18:50

Not a common practice to that You see parents taking.

18:52

But. Todd did tell the Arizona family

18:54

that the tattoo doesn't bring hurtful

18:56

memories to him, instead of brings a

18:59

form of happiness because Rachel is with

19:01

him everywhere he goes. Now

19:03

Kids Tattoo on the other hand, featured a

19:06

line from Rachel's favorite songs and it said

19:08

quote. And. Oceans deep. My faith

19:10

will stand. As

19:12

another way to honor Rachel came in

19:14

taught established a dog rescue called Rachel's

19:17

Rescue which is dedicated to caring for

19:19

dogs, nursing them back to health. And.

19:21

Finding them loving homes, The.

19:23

Idea for the rescue stem from Rachel's

19:25

passion for fostering puppies and or dream

19:28

of starting her own rescue. For.

19:30

Years retired ask him to part with

19:32

her to start the rescue and initially

19:34

came hesitated because she didn't want to

19:36

handle the business side of things, she

19:38

simply wanted to focus on caring for

19:41

the dogs. However, after Rachel's passing, Kim

19:43

decided to fulfill her daughter's dream. The.

19:45

Rescue provides taught and came with a positive

19:48

outlet and a way for them to share

19:50

Rachel story. However, They.

19:52

Have said that the only thing that will

19:55

make a living without Rachel even remotely bearable.

19:57

Would. Be justice. Kim told.

20:00

Arizona family quote nothing will obviously

20:02

bring her back. That will never

20:04

change. But. It would be helpful for

20:06

us and healing and bring some sort of

20:08

closure and finding this person. In.

20:11

June Of Twenty Twenty Three. One.

20:13

Year after Rachel was killed. Detective.

20:16

Still have many unanswered questions.

20:18

They. Haven't been able to come up with

20:20

any motive for her murder or any potential

20:23

suspects. Kim. Told the Gilbert's I

20:25

knew that she and Todd met with the lead

20:27

detective every couple of months. The. Detective

20:29

always said they were working on the case.

20:31

They would go down one rabbit hole and

20:33

another lead would pop up. But. That's

20:35

all they could share with Kim and taught at that

20:37

time. Kim went on to

20:40

state that the details of the investigation have

20:42

been kept extremely privates with the police not

20:44

showing much with Rachel's family. Can.

20:46

Went on to explain that although she had

20:48

seen Rachel's medical report from the hospital, She.

20:51

Hadn't been allowed access to her daughter's

20:53

police or autopsy report. The. Medical

20:55

Examiner's office said they couldn't release the

20:57

autopsy report because the case was still

21:00

open. The. Police also said the

21:02

same thing about the police report. Now.

21:04

This was obviously very upsetting to Rachel's

21:06

family. Ever murder was never solved and

21:09

they wouldn't have access to those reports.

21:11

And. Kim told the Gilbert Ah news quote.

21:13

It's. So disappointing and so frustrating as

21:15

a parent going through the situation that

21:18

the only people that we have to

21:20

rely on to get information is the

21:22

police. And. They haven't given us

21:24

any information. So.

21:27

I'll weigh in on this really quickly. I'm not

21:29

gonna sit here in. The. Bay or

21:31

disregard. Kim's feelings are just going

21:34

to come from the investigatory side and I

21:36

think most of you know by this point

21:38

where I'm gonna go with this this is a

21:40

really new case and any information that they

21:42

have. Which. From what we can

21:44

tell on outside is limited. The. Not

21:46

gonna want to expose that to the public because

21:48

it kind of takes away all their leverage. And

21:51

I will say this: The The Police have

21:53

met with Kim and Todd multiple times. And.

21:55

Haven't shared much with them, but from

21:57

what you guys can see throughout this.

22:00

this episode, Kim

22:02

and Todd and other friends and family

22:04

have been very open with the

22:06

media and the risk of telling

22:08

them something and then having them relay

22:11

that to an outlet is too

22:14

much of a risk at this point.

22:16

The detectives ultimate priority is

22:18

to solve this case for Rachel. That's their client.

22:21

That's who they're working for. Yes, they're

22:23

also working for the family as

22:25

well, but their number one

22:27

responsibility is to Rachel and finding her

22:29

killer. And they're not going

22:31

to do anything to jeopardize that even

22:34

if the family doesn't agree with

22:36

their approach. Now

22:38

in February of 2024, Kim

22:40

spoke to the Gilbert Sun News and shared

22:42

that she and Todd recently met with detectives and

22:45

received disheartening news. She

22:47

explained that basically the case is going

22:49

to be inactive until someone speaks up

22:51

or says something. The police

22:53

have done everything they can possibly do. They've

22:56

investigated all leads only to

22:58

come up with nothing. Kim

23:01

also said that the police department's only option

23:03

left was to reach out to silent witness

23:05

and request that a reward be offered in

23:07

the case. Thankfully, silent

23:09

witness did agree to help and

23:12

they put up a reward of $2,000 and created a

23:15

flyer with information about the case. An

23:18

additional 5,000 was later added,

23:20

bringing the total to $7,000. Todd

23:24

and Kim expressed to the Gilbert Sun News

23:26

that they were not hopeful about Rachel's case

23:28

being solved. Todd admitted he

23:30

hasn't been very optimistic from the start. He

23:33

pointed out, quote, there simply was very

23:35

little evidence. I realize this. No

23:37

gun, no witness, no cameras, no

23:40

issues in her life that would point towards someone

23:42

wanting her dead. Even the detective told

23:44

us she is squeaky clean and was not into

23:46

anything she should not have been. Kim,

23:49

who had previously been hopeful, shared

23:51

that her optimism had diminished as well. She

23:54

said, quote, we just have to resolve ourselves

23:57

to the fact that we likely may never know who

23:59

took Rachel's case. Rachel's life. In

24:01

February of 2024, Rachel's

24:04

parents also spoke to ABC 15.

24:07

When asked what they wanted to say to Rachel's

24:09

killer, Todd shared that he had worked

24:11

hard to keep hate out of his house since Rachel's

24:13

murder. He mentioned that his house

24:15

was still full of love and that the

24:17

killer did not win. Todd added

24:19

that the family is waiting for the killer to

24:21

tell someone what happened, which will hopefully get back

24:24

to the police. Todd said, quote,

24:26

If you've heard something, please, please

24:29

talk. Please talk. We

24:31

miss her badly. The world misses

24:33

her badly. Now,

24:35

while the Hansons await answers, they remain

24:38

focused on Rachel's rescue. Kim

24:40

told Arizona family that sharing Rachel's story

24:42

with people, especially with those who

24:44

come to adopt, help keep her

24:47

daughter's memory alive. She said, quote,

24:49

I know that she's watching over and

24:51

I feel her presence often, and I

24:54

know that makes her happy. Lucky

26:02

gonna go right through it. It's not gonna be

26:04

long, but I wanna go over a point by

26:06

point. I have a couple theories that I wanna

26:08

discuss, but the first thing that I

26:10

wanna talk about is I think

26:12

a very important piece of evidence that

26:15

we don't know for sure. And

26:17

that's the door. We've heard two

26:19

sides of it. We've heard that potentially

26:22

the door was shut when police arrived.

26:25

They didn't say if it was broken in any way

26:27

or if there was damage. They just said it was

26:29

shut and we know that Kim has come

26:31

out and said publicly that the door had been kicked

26:33

in. Now it is possible

26:35

that both stories are true.

26:38

I've seen situations where I've kicked the door

26:40

in during a search warrant and the door

26:43

swings open and yet it still swings back

26:45

and is able to shut. Maybe

26:48

not super securely, but it's still able to shut

26:50

because you might just pop that lock in a

26:52

way where it pops open, but then it can

26:54

still catch on the latch on

26:56

its way back. It is possible, but

26:59

the reason I bring this up is

27:01

the door being kicked in is an extremely

27:04

critical piece of evidence because yes,

27:07

I did say earlier that a gunshot may

27:10

not have been heard by a potential

27:12

neighbor because it would just be

27:14

one minor pop. And again, depending on caliber,

27:17

it may not have been that loud. It also could

27:19

have been suppressed. We don't know, but

27:21

a door being kicked in is

27:23

not only gonna be loud. It's

27:26

gonna shake the entire structure of that immediate

27:28

area for not only that apartment, but the

27:30

apartments around it. Trust

27:32

me, if you kick a door on apartment

27:34

overnight, again, I don't know the proximity of these

27:37

apartments. I'm assuming they're close. It's

27:39

gonna shake everyone's apartment, not just hers. And

27:42

in my experience, whether I'm using

27:44

a ram or a mule kick with

27:46

my foot, it's gonna take multiple

27:49

kicks on that door to bust it open.

27:51

And I don't know how strong the door

27:54

is, but if it

27:56

takes even one or two kicks, it's gonna be extremely

27:58

loud. It's gonna wake up. some

28:00

people for sure. So it does

28:02

raise some questions for me whether or

28:04

not the door was actually kicked in

28:07

and that also plays into Jo-Met leaving

28:09

that night. Without having

28:11

the report I would love to know if when

28:14

Jo-Met left and it was around midnight

28:17

if Rachel was still awake or if she was sleeping and

28:19

he slipped out of the bed and just kind

28:21

of snuck out of the apartment. I'm assuming he had

28:23

a key so he would have been able to lock

28:25

the door. It would be very

28:27

easy for us to kind of

28:29

come to a conclusion on that one if we

28:32

knew for certain that Jo-Met locked the door

28:35

and no one else had a key. Also

28:38

this is gonna play into one of my

28:40

theories that I'm gonna save for the last

28:42

theory because I think it's extremely relative but

28:44

I wanted to discuss the door because I

28:46

think it's a critical piece of evidence. Police

28:49

haven't came out publicly and said anything

28:51

but I would love to know if that door

28:53

had actual damage because again if it

28:55

had been kicked in how the

28:57

hell didn't anybody hear it? I don't think you

28:59

have a situation where people are refusing to come

29:01

forward out of fear. I just

29:04

don't know. I just don't know how it how it could

29:06

be possible where no one would have heard anything at

29:08

2 a.m. if somebody's taking the door off the hinges.

29:11

But that being said let's talk about the three

29:13

theories. The first one the idea

29:15

that the horse is somehow connected to

29:17

her murder. I don't see the connection.

29:20

The horse has already been returned.

29:22

I'm not in the horse-dealing business but

29:25

I don't think this was a purebred

29:27

or thoroughbred that was worth millions of

29:29

dollars and even then I don't know

29:31

if that would justify killing someone for

29:33

just talking crap online but

29:35

it doesn't seem like there's a connection. These

29:38

people stole the horse somehow they

29:40

got it back. I don't know if the

29:42

police have been able to connect who's responsible for the theft of

29:44

the horse or the horse was just you know

29:46

left somewhere to be found. But either

29:49

way maybe with Rachel's death that's why they

29:51

returned the horse saying oh you know what

29:53

this was about a horse not about murder

29:55

we don't want to be connected to it

29:57

we're gonna drop the horse off because if

29:59

they were were responsible for it and

30:02

they killed Rachel intentionally for

30:04

this horse, why would they return it

30:06

after the fact? So for me,

30:08

as Kim has said, it doesn't

30:11

look like the like Dash being

30:13

stolen was the reason why Rachel

30:15

was killed. I would be shocked if we

30:17

later learned that was the motive behind this

30:20

case. Not impossible, but

30:22

in my professional opinion, highly

30:24

unlikely. Which brings me

30:26

to my second theory, which is the

30:29

stalker theory. And I

30:31

know it's kind of a catch all, but we've seen

30:34

so many cases turn out that it

30:36

was someone like this, that I have to throw it in

30:38

there. We don't know

30:40

who was living in that apartment

30:42

complex, who was living nearby that may

30:45

have had a fascination with

30:47

Rachel and understood that some of the

30:49

time she was alone. And

30:52

maybe it was a common occurrence for Jomet to

30:54

leave late at night to get up

30:56

for work the next morning or to go

30:58

somewhere early the next morning. And

31:01

they kind of learned that schedule. And

31:03

so when Jomet left, they

31:05

waited a couple hours and then they

31:07

went into the apartment. The only

31:09

issue with that is it seems like they

31:11

went in there with the intent on killing

31:13

her and there

31:15

wasn't really a form of sexual

31:18

intent there because you normally

31:20

will see that with it as well. Maybe

31:22

there's some type of fascination with this person.

31:25

They'll engage with them. And you would

31:27

think that if that were the case, again, not having access

31:29

to the 911 call, Rachel

31:32

might have said something like that. It sounds like

31:34

this person walked in and essentially

31:37

based on what we have about

31:39

ballistics, this person shot

31:41

Rachel while she was potentially still

31:43

in bed. We're talking about

31:45

a bullet going through her abdomen and out

31:47

through her shoulder, which

31:50

is a really weird angle if

31:52

you think about it, not a very common angle to see that.

31:55

So she would almost be parallel

31:58

to the shooter where she would always be in bed. almost

32:00

be around the same height where if the shooter's

32:02

standing at the end of her bed and they're

32:05

shooting at her, that's the only angle where

32:07

you can really see the bullet

32:09

entering her stomach and coming out through her

32:11

shoulder. The bullet entered her

32:13

almost at a parallel angle causing

32:15

that exit wound to occur

32:18

that way and it would justify

32:20

the entry and exit being the way they

32:22

were. So it does sound like

32:24

this person walked in, shot

32:26

her, and fled the area. That was it.

32:28

I don't know if there's more to it. Maybe

32:30

if we had the 911 tape, I would feel

32:33

differently. But this doesn't sound

32:35

like a situation where if this was a

32:37

stalker, that's the manner in which

32:39

it would be carried out. A lot of the

32:41

times, it's more personal. You'll see

32:43

some level of struggle, some form of

32:45

abuse. The death itself is

32:48

normally more hands-on, potentially

32:50

strangulation or a stabbing.

32:53

It's much more involved. It's not just walking

32:56

in and shooting her from the end of

32:58

the bed and then taken off. Not

33:01

impossible. This could be someone

33:03

who has been watching her for a while and

33:05

had been thinking about this, maybe had no real

33:07

connection to her and saw

33:09

an opportunity when Jo-Matt left and

33:12

capitalized on that. But again, I'm

33:14

putting this out there because

33:16

it could be a potential reason why

33:18

this case hasn't been solved, but

33:21

I am not optimistic about this

33:23

theory either. The final

33:25

theory, which I feel is the most

33:27

promising, is the idea

33:29

that the previous tenants are

33:32

somehow connected to this case. This

33:35

to me sounds like a case of

33:37

mistaken identity. I feel

33:40

like this person went in there thinking

33:42

they were going to kill one person and ended

33:45

up shooting another person and may

33:47

have realized that in that moment.

33:50

That's why they fled without

33:52

finishing her off. When

33:57

they shot her in the stomach and it came out through her shoulder.

34:00

more than likely they realized at that

34:02

moment that the wound may

34:04

have not been fatal. There's

34:07

no way of telling for sure. If you're

34:09

going in there to make sure that this person's

34:11

dead, you're going to shoot them more than one

34:13

time, potentially in the head or in the chest,

34:16

to ensure that they do not survive their

34:18

injuries. This whole thing is perplexing

34:20

to me. And I

34:22

don't know the dynamics or the relationships

34:24

that the previous tenants had. We

34:27

do know, based on what police have revealed

34:29

to Kim and Todd, that Rachel's

34:32

record, quote-unquote, was squeaky clean.

34:35

We don't know what the record or

34:37

what the relationship or what the behavior was

34:39

of the previous tenants. I'm not

34:41

accusing them of anything. But without knowing

34:43

who they were, what they

34:45

were into, I can't clear

34:47

them just from the surface. And I don't

34:50

think that law enforcement has come out and

34:52

cleared them either. Yes, they've spoken to

34:55

them, but where did it lead them? Is what I

34:57

really want to know. What were they

34:59

involved in? Who were they associating with?

35:02

Those are the questions that I have.

35:05

Because this really sounds like a case where

35:08

these individuals moved out, Rachel

35:10

moved right in, and shortly after

35:13

she moved in, again,

35:15

she moved in in early spring. She

35:17

was killed in June. So we're talking

35:20

only a few months. It was April, May for

35:22

spring, and then she's killed in June. So

35:25

could the offender, could the gunman, been

35:28

under the impression that the previous

35:30

tenants were still living there? I

35:33

think that's very possible. But then the

35:35

question becomes, how much research was this person really doing? How

35:37

much of an axe to grind did

35:40

they really have with these individuals if

35:42

that was the case where they wouldn't

35:44

even confirm before carrying this out that

35:46

they were still living there? So

35:48

there's definitely a lot more questions than

35:50

answers, but if you forced me to

35:53

take a guess at what

35:55

theory I thought was most plausible, it

35:57

would definitely be the angle of a mistaken

35:59

idea. identity, for sure. Without a doubt, based

36:02

on what we have here, based on what

36:04

we know about Rachel, no enemies, nobody wanted

36:06

to hurt her. It

36:08

looks like this was a deliberate act

36:10

where the intent was to kill this

36:12

person. And yet, when the gunman

36:14

goes in there, they shoot Rachel in a way

36:16

that wouldn't automatically kill her. It

36:18

sounds like in the middle of it, they

36:21

had a change of heart. Well, why

36:23

would they have a change of heart? Only reason I

36:25

can think of, they realize it wasn't

36:27

the person they were intending on shooting. And

36:29

that's where I leave this case. I'm

36:32

very frustrated by the fact that we don't have

36:34

cameras. If we had surveillance footage,

36:37

this case would more than likely already be

36:39

solved or be a lot further in the

36:41

process than it is right now. And

36:43

I am a little perplexed that the

36:45

police department came out so early and said they're

36:47

no longer going to be working this case. And

36:50

I did say in the episode that at this

36:52

point, it's really new, and they're not

36:54

going to release a ton of information. But

36:56

in the same breath, if they're no

36:58

longer working it, I really do hope

37:00

that they've consulted with outside agencies, including

37:03

federal agencies, state agencies, and maybe even

37:05

some private entities, some PIs who work

37:08

in the area who may know some

37:10

people who have previous law enforcement experience,

37:12

to make sure that they've dotted all

37:14

I's and crossed all T's and got

37:16

the perspectives from people who may not

37:19

be directly connected to the case to

37:21

ensure that everything they've done is everything that

37:23

can be done. Because I will tell you

37:25

many times, people come in from

37:28

the outside and look at what's already been

37:30

conducted, what's already been investigated and say, well,

37:33

what about this over here? Or what about this

37:35

witness statement? Or did you compare these two? Or

37:37

did you connect this person to this

37:39

person and ask them this? It might

37:41

be a small thing. But having a

37:43

fresh set of eyes, take a look at the

37:45

investigation, as long as they're under some type of

37:48

NDA, and they realize they can't share any

37:50

of that information. I don't

37:52

see how it could hurt a case where they're telling

37:54

the parents that they're no longer working it. But

37:57

if that's all been done, it's going to come to one of you

37:59

guys out there. to help solve this case. So

38:02

just to recap really quickly, at around

38:04

2am on June 4th, 2022,

38:06

a gunman entered Rachel

38:08

Hansen's apartment located at 1900

38:10

South Coronado Road in Gilbert,

38:12

Arizona and shot her once

38:14

while she was sleeping. And

38:16

anyone with information in Rachel's

38:18

murder should leave an anonymous

38:20

tip by calling Silent Witness

38:22

at 480-WITNESS and just remember,

38:25

there is a $7,000 reward available.

38:28

And one positive note that I didn't want

38:30

to fail to mention because I

38:33

don't know how many of you know this, but I am

38:35

a huge animal lover and

38:37

donator and we have a

38:39

local shelter here in Rhode Island that

38:42

I'm constantly mentioning on social

38:44

media. It's the Hotel for

38:46

Homeless Dogs and what these people

38:48

do for these animals is

38:50

just incredible and it was part of the

38:52

reason I wanted to cover this case knowing

38:54

that this was something that was close to

38:57

Rachel's heart. And I'm so happy to hear

38:59

that Kim and Todd have taken

39:01

on this huge responsibility and

39:03

although they have experienced the

39:06

biggest nightmare parents can experience,

39:08

they're turning their tragedy into

39:10

something positive that

39:12

can end up affecting a lot of

39:14

animals and also a lot of families

39:16

who are now going to have these

39:18

puppies in their lives and will have

39:20

a dramatic impact on their families for

39:22

years to come. And so I definitely

39:25

wanted to mention Rachel's Rescue again and

39:27

point out that the Rescue

39:30

has already helped over 200

39:32

puppies find homes. And

39:34

if you want to check out Rachel's Rescue, you

39:36

can go over to rachelsrescue2022.com. I strongly recommend that

39:41

you do. You will not regret it and let them know

39:43

that I sent you. That's going to do it for

39:45

me guys. Everyone stay safe out there.

39:47

I'll see you next week.
