It represented one of those periods in Roman History when chaos reigned in the form of of a year of civil war, and resultant renewal and realignment.The narrative begins with the infamous Nero, who is associated with violence, madness, misrule and decadence. However, the author points out that in 54 CE, at the age of 16, Nero ascended to the imperial throne, and for the most part his arrival was well received. Among his early achievements was the granting of certain basic rights to slaves, the strengthening of the senate, a reduction in taxes and the general encouragement of modesty and restraint. But a darker side of Neroâs nature gradually began to manifest, and his cruelty and instability began to erode his early popularity. His death sparked a scramble for the throne that is the focus of this book. The result was a period of instability and civil war as several pretenders to the throne, among them the emperors Galba, Otho and Vitellius, gained and lost power, until finally the emperor Vespasian imposed order and discipline on a chaotic empire.The author depicts each of these individuals with balance, insight and just the right amount of detail. I enjoyed the discussion of the personalities of these individuals. A good book about a fascinating era.All you need to know about the year of four emperorsIt really enjoyed the book the Year of the Four Emperors: The History of the Civil War to Succeed Nero as Emperor of Rome. I like ancient Roman history and will tend to look at in the book related to Roman history. The book is concise and precise in the description of the four emperors. The book starts out by describing the line of emperors from Caesar through Nero and finishes with Vespasian who creates the Flavian Dynasty. Vespasian was the best of the lot and reformed the Roman armies to make them more professional. There was a lot in this book, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in Roman history.This is an OK book & fills a vacant period ...This is an OK book & fills a vacant period in Roman period not found in most histories ( The unstable year between Nero & Vesp). I must admit I knew little about this year since most histories just say it was unstable & there were 4 emperors in 1 year & do not name them or talk about their conflicts or how they came to the throne or were deposed. This an informative book & well written and it short but not too exciting.
