2:06

I'm your host Jeff Kanata, spelled with two N's and

2:08

one T. And I am joined, as always, by my

2:10

friend slash co-host slash

2:13

nemesis. The

2:16

guy whose jingles are

2:18

always belling. I don't know. I did

2:20

nothing this week. Mr. Christian Spicer, hello

2:22

Christian! I told you

2:24

not to tell anybody that. That was a personal

2:26

issue. It's resolved, by the

2:28

way. Thank you for putting that out there.

2:32

I could have said bells are always jingling, which

2:34

would have actually made sense. But I didn't. No,

2:36

it was actually 48 hours of bed rest. But

2:40

it got better. Oh, that's how it's all done? Yeah. Lots

2:43

of water, too. Lots of water. And

2:45

put some tussin on it, I think is the

2:47

fix of everything, right? Hey

2:50

folks, we got a show for you. We got

2:52

a great show for you. We got

2:54

so much to discuss. We got some

2:56

cool games to talk about. We're motoring

2:59

to the end of the year. With

3:01

so much coming to a head. Oh

3:03

my gosh, it's exciting. And we

3:05

have an awesome guest for you. You

3:08

know the DLC always stands for your downloadable Kannada

3:10

and your downloadable Christian. But this

3:12

week, I am so excited because

3:15

once again, DLC stands for declaring

3:19

a lifelong commitment. From

3:22

married to the game, we

3:26

have Hype Man, voiceover

3:28

artist, and podcaster. Our

3:31

friend Gabe Petillo is back with us. Hey,

3:33

Gabe. Woo woo. Oh

3:36

man. Thanks for having me. So happy to

3:38

be back. Christian, it's so nice

3:40

to finally meet you. You weren't here last time. And

3:43

so, yeah, man, glad to be back

3:45

with you fellas talking. This is awesome.

3:47

Yeah, it was unfortunate last time Christian's

3:49

jingles were belling and he couldn't be.

3:51

Yeah, again, really trying not

3:53

to talk about that. But, you're giving

3:55

up. I apologize. Yeah. Your

3:58

wife cleared a good house. I'm glad I cleared it. help though

4:00

and I called for advice. You really helped

4:02

me out with that one. Thank you. Geez

4:04

Louise. Oh, are we here to talk about

4:06

video games? Nothing's happened this week. It's just

4:09

insults. All this week we're doing the

4:11

Hot Takes insult show. That's right. Putting

4:14

everybody's health business out there. All

4:18

right. We'll get right into it. Let's start the

4:20

show the way we always do. What's the story

4:22

of the week? The

4:24

story of the week. The story of the

4:26

week. The story of the week. The

4:31

story of the week is the part of the show where we make

4:33

our case for the most important stories that happen in

4:35

the world of games this week. You

4:37

can always submit stories for our

4:39

consideration by sending us an email

4:42

to dlcfeedbackatgmail.com. You can also send

4:44

any kind of correspondence you'd like.

4:46

Anything you want us to know,

4:49

that's where you can reach us.

4:51

We love getting your emails dlcfeedbackatgmail.com.

4:53

You can also become part of

4:55

our community by hanging out in

4:57

our Discord with lots of other

4:59

cool folks and us. It's

5:02

fun. The Discord is 5x5DLC

5:04

on Discord. I urge you to

5:06

take part. But Gabe, you

5:08

are our guest. So you

5:10

get first pick of stories. What would

5:12

you consider to be your story of

5:14

the week? Man,

5:16

this was a little weird because

5:19

I don't like these things and I

5:21

don't actually love diving into them. But

5:23

we have to talk about it because it's going to be one of the biggest

5:25

games on the planet. But that old

5:28

rock star has been a little leaky as of

5:30

lately. That boat needs

5:33

some pitch on it to

5:36

fill up some of them holes. So

5:38

it turns out, or maybe, or

5:41

maybe not, that an employee

5:43

of rock star's son was taken

5:46

all kinds of... Act on. Act son. He's out. I'm

5:52

so sorry to tell you, you have to

5:54

go live with another family. How much your

5:56

bells have been jingling around here. to

6:00

go live with somebody else. Me and your mom

6:02

have made the tough decision that it was your

6:04

fault, actually. And so, maybe you live somebody else.

6:06

I like my job, son. So, yeah.

6:09

Exactly. So we have this

6:11

weird, grainy video that kinda

6:13

hit the internet of somebody

6:15

screen capturing something. But then

6:17

today, weirdly enough, I'm on

6:19

Twitter and doing this, or

6:21

X, sorry. Now you don't have to

6:24

start. Old habits die hard, I'm an old man. He

6:26

even called it Twitter. You don't need to call it that. He

6:28

was on stage in front of everybody. He's

6:31

calling it Twitter. Is he calling it Twitter still? Yeah, he called

6:33

it Twitter. Anyway, sorry. I don't feel as bad. Today,

6:36

a full minute trailer dropped.

6:39

And I was

6:42

like, why, how does this

6:44

happen? Like, two days before

6:46

it's supposed to officially drop on December 5th,

6:48

which we're all excited about to see what's

6:50

going on. A trailer drops today

6:53

with full voiceover. It's like a conversation

6:55

between this man and woman. She's asking

6:57

him what he likes about something. I

7:00

only watched it like twice. I might've watched

7:02

it three times. It shows

7:04

like Vice City Beach. It shows people running.

7:06

It shows all this stuff. And it got

7:09

me so excited. I'm actually not even a

7:11

GTA guy. What excites

7:14

me about GTA is the behemoth that it

7:16

is. And that almost everybody has to take

7:18

note of Grand Theft Auto,

7:20

even if you're outside of gaming. And then Grand

7:22

Theft Auto is also that video game

7:24

you point to when people

7:26

say games are for kids. You

7:30

know what I'm saying? When you start making your case for

7:32

how much money games make, I

7:34

feel like GTA is always the thing that's easy to

7:36

point to. They made, what, a

7:38

billion dollars when Five came out on

7:41

the first four days. And so it

7:43

just kind of like, it frustrated me a little bit

7:45

for Rockstar. It made me a little sad, but at

7:47

the same time again, I watched the trailer a couple

7:49

of times just to see what was going on. And

7:52

it just seems like such an impressive thing they're building.

7:54

And it's just such a bummer that it would leak

7:56

online days

7:58

before it's supposed to officially happen. And especially

8:00

after they had that whole

8:03

brouhaha what last year the

8:05

two years ago How

8:07

even remember time is a flat circle but when

8:10

when the some of the source code was

8:12

stolen and they yeah had a lot of

8:15

People were analyzing what GTA 6 was

8:17

and it was old stuff, but it was you

8:20

know People were throwing that up online.

8:22

So you know, they would be locked

8:24

down like never before Yes

8:27

in the wake of that That's what I

8:29

would think and yeah when that came out that stuff was hilarious

8:31

a couple years ago And it was like really

8:33

really alpha and there was still like blocks

8:35

that would be buildings and cars and and

8:38

stuff like that And yeah, but this is

8:40

this looks I'm interested to see how legit

8:42

this is because that's the other thing

8:44

about the internet Right, like people pull off

8:46

amazing things that you think are real and then

8:48

aren't real at all And so if this same

8:51

trailer drops two days from now with the voiceover

8:53

and the Vice City Beach and everything like that

8:55

Cuz I don't know that did we know it was

8:57

Vice City Did we see the color we don't know anything

8:59

it was Vice City And so even if

9:01

it's Vice City that would be

9:04

something to know before they they told us and so

9:06

yeah I guess only time will tell we won't have

9:08

to wait that long. But I

9:10

have not seen this I have not seen

9:12

any of the leaked or Purportedly

9:15

leaked stuff. There's a

9:17

guy who probably leaked it. That's a

9:19

classic. Yeah, the leaker thing I

9:27

Do want to tell the the folks listening

9:29

all of our audience that the plan right

9:31

now Because

9:40

as you know, the DLC podcast

9:42

curse is that big news happens

9:44

right after episodes come. Oh, yeah,

9:46

that's exactly us to

9:49

rock star yeah rock star has confirmed

9:52

that the the actual real bona fide trailer

9:54

will be coming on the fifth as Gabe

9:56

mentioned and Christian and I are gonna

9:58

do a special bonus recording

10:01

talking about that because this is also the week

10:04

of the the game awards so

10:06

I think it's gonna get you know by the time we get to

10:09

next Monday it's gonna be old

10:11

news so we're gonna do

10:13

a special bonus content episode that's gonna be

10:15

exclusive to patrons for a short period of

10:18

time where Christian are gonna give our

10:20

reactions to the the actual trailer when it

10:22

drops and

10:24

I'm very excited about it but it

10:26

is wild to me that these leaks

10:28

have continued to happen in

10:30

this era of you

10:33

know everybody being conscious of that and in

10:35

like I said in the wake of GTA

10:37

6 already being victim of

10:39

you know massive early spoilery

10:42

kind of leaks Gabe

10:45

are is there something I you said

10:47

you're not a GTA guy I'm not

10:49

really either I'm I'm also very curious

10:51

about it and kind of excited to

10:53

see what the next thing is because

10:55

it's such a gargantuan as a behemoth

10:58

but is there something you

11:01

mentioned being excited potentially about Vice City but

11:03

is there something that they could show in

11:06

the trailer in the real trailer that would

11:08

get you really amped

11:10

really invested in in this

11:12

game's release E

11:14

for everyone no I'm just kidding that

11:18

would be the ultimate unexpected thing that would be wild

11:22

what a great answer that's so funny

11:27

you know it's interesting is that like obviously I'm

11:29

kidding but like one

11:32

of the reasons I don't play GTA

11:34

is because I have kids and when

11:36

GTA 5 came out I remember being

11:38

like okay it's my first time diving back into

11:40

a GTA I hadn't played GTA since it was

11:42

top-down way way back in the

11:44

day again I'm home and I remember

11:47

getting GTA 5 because it was that first

11:50

weekend the hype train was like just so

11:52

real and I don't know if you guys

11:54

are like me but like I love being

11:56

a part of the thing as it's happening

11:58

sure there's a bunch of game that I play late

12:01

and get to and I'm finally like, oh

12:03

yeah, this game is awesome. But my heart

12:05

is to be involved in that wave that's

12:07

happening when something comes out. And so I

12:09

pop in GTA 5 and at the time

12:11

we were living in a house where my

12:14

console was in our bonus room.

12:16

But our bonus room didn't have a door. It was

12:18

just like the top of the stairs and then you

12:20

kind of just looked over and there's the couch and

12:22

just the area. Check.

12:26

I couldn't play that game for five minutes in my

12:28

house. I was like, this is crazy. I

12:30

was like, I need to find a building somewhere that

12:33

I could lock the deadbolt, then put the chair

12:35

up against the doorknob. Just

12:38

because GTA,

12:40

while it looks amazing, while I hear the

12:43

story is incredible, you

12:46

accidentally stumble into some really ratchet

12:48

stuff. And so I was

12:50

just doing like some side missions just to

12:52

get my feet wet in the world. And

12:55

I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

12:57

And so it kind of got me off GTA.

12:59

And I was like, well, I guess this was

13:01

not for me in my house, but that's all

13:04

right. There's gonna be plenty of 10 year

13:06

olds buying it with their parents at

13:08

GameStop. And so

13:11

I'll leave it for them. But so

13:13

there's probably nothing they can show that makes me

13:15

wanna jump into it. But it's

13:17

just like GameFly or something

13:19

like that. You're like, should I just rent it

13:21

for a weekend and just see what the thing

13:24

is all about? Because it's just so exciting

13:26

when something this big is happening. You know what

13:28

I mean? Yeah, yeah. And they have all the

13:30

money. I

13:33

keep thinking, this game is gonna be what happens when

13:36

you make a game where money is no object.

13:39

You can put as much money

13:41

into the creation of this game as you

13:43

want, and you're still gonna make a profit.

13:45

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's the Marvel version of

13:47

video games or Avatar where you're like, we

13:50

needed a second one? It was like, yeah, but look, all

13:52

this tech we got. It's like, but then we did a

13:54

second one. You see the

13:56

water on the hand? You see how good that

13:58

looks? Right, yeah. It's bottom. Bottomless pockets

14:00

and so that it feels like

14:02

in 2024 What

14:05

does a game look like when it doesn't matter

14:07

how much you spend on it? That's that's when

14:09

I I want to be dazzled, you know by

14:11

just have pure technology of it and

14:13

hopefully that will be the case but Christian

14:15

Spicer, I'm curious your answer to that and also the

14:18

sort of your take on the Massive

14:21

leaks as as gave gave pointed

14:23

out that we know we need some this

14:26

boat needs some repairs Yes,

14:30

I if those rumors are

14:32

true and it is an

14:34

employee's child I Feel

14:36

for that family. It's easy to joke

14:39

about That's

14:41

unfortunate The the rumor I heard is that it

14:43

was like a kid who showed his friend and

14:45

his friend is the one who posted it and

14:48

it's Tracks

14:51

right it makes sense. That's the kind of way

14:53

this thing would happen is a kid With

14:57

his buddies, you know, he just wants

14:59

to show off my dad is so

15:02

cool He works at

15:04

look what he's got. Look what

15:06

I could have before anybody else, you

15:08

know, totally tracks to me It's

15:10

it's the entertainment industry equivalent of if

15:12

you send someone or your

15:14

partner a picture of you undressed You

15:17

have to assume your partner's gonna show that to

15:19

someone else later and the same thing is true.

15:22

That's what you Oh Gabe

15:28

I don't know when I got him. I think it was like when

15:30

you were on a belief and he sent him to me and it

15:33

was a whole thing but That's

15:39

what caused Christians jingles balls

15:41

condition Well, speaking of

15:43

leaks, you know, I tried to keep a

15:45

personal medical condition on lockdown myself sometimes

15:51

Labby mouth. Yeah, you just blab

15:53

blab blab. Um, I really

15:56

do feel for them if that is true

15:59

because While this studio, Rockstar

16:01

has all the money and they make these games that

16:03

make all the money, and they've suffered

16:05

through these leaks, this is a terrible

16:08

experience I'd have to imagine. And

16:10

that sucks. I don't think

16:12

there's any way to sugarcoat it. That is

16:14

awful unless it was like a malicious thing

16:16

and we find out this dad is an

16:18

abusive parent and the kid was act—whatever. None

16:21

of that—that's all wild speculation. That's not likely

16:23

what happened. And this is just a super

16:26

unfortunate incident and have it all come back

16:28

to them like that. That is terrible,

16:30

especially this close to their

16:32

reveal. The other type

16:35

of leak of the trailer that's

16:37

alleged—the alleged trailer that's circulating now, I

16:41

don't know how things don't get leaked, I think

16:43

is more my perspective. Oh, interesting. Everything

16:46

requires an upload.

16:49

It goes somewhere. It's not renting

16:52

a satellite and live broadcasting, this type

16:54

of thing. And so again,

16:58

virtual hat off to Jeff Keighley and the crew because

17:00

of all the things that get leaked, the

17:02

Game Awards, he does a pretty

17:04

good job keeping a lot of that stuff

17:07

locked down. He's had a few—I think Last

17:09

of Us remaster is maybe

17:11

going to be a Game Awards announce. They

17:13

had a leak before with some stuff, but

17:15

for the most part, he has real-world exclusives.

17:19

So if you think about how many hands those things

17:21

need to go through to debut

17:23

on YouTube or something like that or wherever it's

17:25

going to be, I'm shocked. I am shocked that

17:27

more things don't get leaked. I have a question

17:29

for you. Do you think that— My bells are

17:32

fine. Thank you. Oh, yeah, yeah. That was number

17:34

one. Okay, good. I'm glad we got that out

17:36

of the way. Number two is a

17:38

two-part question. Do you think

17:41

the Game Awards is a strong and mighty team

17:43

that kind of like believe in the thing and

17:45

that's why that's able to stay locked up? And

17:48

then two, do we think more and more leaks

17:50

are happening because more and more people are working

17:52

from home? It's not like we have the lockdown of, hey,

17:54

come look at this trailer, come over to my desk, and

17:56

let's talk about this. Now it's got a lot of stuff

17:59

to do with the game. to be an upload to

18:01

a server, then you've got to download it at

18:03

your house. And so it gives that opportunity to

18:05

have it seen and uploaded and downloaded multiple

18:07

times like you're saying, Christian. It seems like I

18:10

wonder if like the work from home thing would

18:13

make that a way more

18:15

difficult problem. Yeah,

18:17

I think that's a great question. I

18:19

mean, I think Keely just has bodies in his basement

18:21

and you try to leak on Keely, you get one

18:24

leak and then you're done. Exactly.

18:26

You wouldn't like him when he's angry. And

18:29

I wonder how much it is. This

18:32

is old man talk, but everybody

18:34

has phones, even

18:37

very young. It's just so easy to

18:39

share. If your dad has

18:41

it, your mom has something on their phone to send

18:43

it to you, to get it to you somehow, to

18:46

share all this stuff. Like I said,

18:49

I'm just shocked. But Jeff,

18:51

I'm curious your thoughts on like the big

18:53

the big leak and, you know,

18:56

are you on why do things get leaked

18:58

or, you know, I understand

19:00

how things can be kept secret and

19:03

Apple has leaks now. It's

19:05

a hard thing. The more the more

19:07

hands and eyeballs that it has to

19:09

pass through on its way from its

19:11

origin point

19:13

to its destination, just it feels like

19:16

it's it's inevitable.

19:18

It seems that some of this and I

19:20

think I actually I love the

19:22

way you framed it, Gabe, in that people

19:25

that are part of

19:27

the team tend not to

19:29

want to leak. Right. If you're on

19:31

team, let's do this, you know, then

19:33

like if you if you feel like

19:35

the game awards is awesome, what you

19:38

are excited about is the success of

19:40

that moment on the game awards. Right.

19:42

So you are not in you're not

19:44

incentivized to leak. If you are working

19:47

for Rockstar and you want to have the

19:50

big moment that, you know, crescendos and everybody

19:52

got all eyeballs here, you're not

19:54

incentivized. What the guy who is incentivized is

19:56

the kid who's like, I bet my friends

19:58

will like me. 12%

20:00

more if they you know, yeah, so It's

20:04

just hard. It's a very difficult process.

20:06

I'm sure in any kind

20:08

of media To try to

20:10

keep this stuff, especially this stuff that's that's

20:13

of a scale like GT There are a

20:15

few very few things that

20:17

are the scale of a GTA

20:19

announcement so

20:21

that's just got to be level of difficulty has got to

20:23

be really high and and kind of trying to keep the

20:26

lid on stuff like that and Yeah,

20:28

I just don't I I

20:30

can't even imagine what it must have been like

20:34

especially since they had that

20:36

awful leak earlier for this

20:38

game that right before this this

20:40

announcement trailer was gonna hit but also,

20:43

I will say the

20:47

announcement of the announcement the the

20:49

Preview little blurb they did that

20:51

said December 5th. We will give

20:53

you the grand reveal that

20:55

had 44

20:58

million views in 24 hours It

21:02

wasn't anything. It's one of those things were like

21:04

we have trailers for trailers now like

21:06

that's wild like Million views

21:08

of a text that said tune in

21:10

on the fifth So

21:14

I don't honestly as much as it it

21:17

truly does suck For

21:19

the people that have you know been toiling away for

21:21

years and they were having a big coming out party

21:24

for this thing That

21:26

that sucks But also

21:28

it's not gonna hurt the game any you know what

21:30

I mean Absolutely actual review like no

21:32

one's gonna not watch the real one because they

21:34

saw this fake way It's a bummer But in

21:36

the grand scheme of things no one's gonna remember

21:38

that when the you know when we're all talking

21:40

next week about the trailer There's gonna be a

21:42

couple thousand people that said I saw this already

21:44

right But a couple thousand is

21:47

a decimal point when you talk about the millions of people they

21:49

end up watching it. It's a round right? Yeah

21:53

My friends works at this works at a

21:55

ginormous company and they were talking about how

21:57

they bring in They

22:00

bring in food every day for the whole staff.

22:03

And they were like, man, we were thinking about how much

22:05

money we spend on this, and it's a rounding error. That's

22:07

how small of a percentage it is. it

22:12

was. I saw that part. And

22:14

still watch it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Still watch it

22:16

again. We're

22:19

going to be doing a bonus content. We're going to be doing a bonus content. And

22:21

we'll give you our take on what it is.

22:26

And we can be all be part of the combo. And

22:32

we'll give you our take on what it is. We'll

22:38

give you our take on what it is. And

22:42

we can be all be part of the combo. as the one you

22:44

see on the fifth. You just wait till the fifth. I'm

22:47

going to wait till the fifth and maybe watch this one after that.

22:49

I kind of want to be fresh. I

22:53

want to see it. Yeah. So that means you

22:55

believe this one's real. I

22:58

do believe it's real. Yeah. I do believe it's

23:00

real. Yeah. Christian, you too? You'll wait

23:02

or you'll watch this

23:06

one? If it ends up in front of my

23:08

face, I will watch it, Gabe. I'm not going

23:10

to seek it out. But if it, you know,

23:12

like I'm not going to not. If you send

23:14

it to me right now. I'll not read it.

23:16

If my phone hits me and I just hits

23:18

the right number. Yeah, right. You know, I'm not

23:20

going to not. I'm just saying. I'm

23:22

just saying. There's a link. I've seen

23:24

that. I show up to this show

23:26

unprepared. I

23:29

know we do this wonderful show, Doc, with

23:31

all these notes. I sit down, put on

23:33

my mustache and hit record. That's all. It

23:36

really is wonderful. None of that's lost on anybody, Christian. We

23:38

all. All right. Speaking of which, what

23:40

is your story of the week? My

23:42

story of the week was something else that you kind of got to watch

23:44

and kind of got to play. And

23:47

as you know, the Game Awards

23:49

is looming with these other big announcements.

23:51

I think this could stand to be

23:54

the biggest announcement of this week, even

23:56

bigger, dear friends, than the GTA six

23:58

or whatever they call it. it, GTA

24:01

trailer, I think this could be

24:03

massive for the industry and where

24:05

it goes. And I'm talking about

24:07

Fortnite's Big Bang event, and what

24:09

Epic has set up now

24:11

in Fortnite. And so

24:14

at the end of season, the end of events, they

24:16

have these big, sometimes you just

24:18

watch it, sometimes you air quote

24:20

play it other times there's more involved play

24:23

elements in it. And the end

24:25

of this one, the Big Bang event, introduced

24:28

concepts that Epic had talked

24:30

about were going to be

24:32

their own games

24:35

or experiences, and also

24:37

showing off long

24:40

planted and acquired

24:43

studios, putting their talents to use in

24:45

a way that people had speculated for

24:47

a good while now, but we hadn't

24:49

really, really seen. So at the end

24:51

of this, also Fortnite has

24:54

just put up massive numbers again, I mean,

24:56

it never really died down, but just this

24:58

past season has just been massive.

25:01

And so at the end of this Big Bang

25:03

event, you're kind of flying around the island and

25:05

you kind of do all these things and of

25:07

them were Lego

25:09

Fortnite, which we had, they talked about

25:12

that partnership. Maybe it

25:14

was a share, I figured it was announced, but they had announced

25:16

this crossover. But we got

25:18

to see a little bit of it.

25:20

And it looks stunning, absolutely stunning, especially

25:23

on PC with ray tracing. And it's

25:26

the buildings are built out of bricks,

25:28

which is really cool because Fortnite already

25:30

has such great destructibility and to not

25:32

have it be Lego bricks and Lego

25:34

people and the characters transform

25:36

into Lego minifig versions of themselves.

25:39

I mean, a lot

25:41

of the modern Lego games look really good.

25:44

But this also looked stunning. And

25:46

we're getting this Lego

25:48

Fortnite survival crafting game coming out on

25:50

the seventh. So by the time you're

25:52

listening to this, it might already

25:54

be out. So that was one. And

25:56

then as it continued, you got into more

26:00

rocket league looking cars than kind of the current

26:02

cars in the game, but kind of like a

26:04

mix of the two and there's

26:07

a racing segment happening and i think that had

26:09

been hinted at and alluded to for a while

26:12

they own the developers behind

26:14

rocket league and driving in the

26:16

game has become more interesting there's

26:18

gas and boost and upgrades and

26:20

jump and stuff like that. But

26:23

now they're straight up a racing

26:25

game rocket racing it

26:27

debuts December 8 the

26:30

day after the Lego one

26:32

debut and then at the end

26:34

of that the end of all

26:36

that there's already two pretty huge

26:38

announcements of things coming to fortnight

26:40

the capital F fortnight the royal fortnight

26:42

the rapper that is fortnight it ends with this musical festival which

26:44

they've done before and various forms to massive off the top of

26:46

the world. And

26:52

it's a man and he's appears and then

26:54

transforms and this whole thing happens. But then

26:56

they talk about what do they call it

26:58

it is called I thought I had it

27:00

written down as I was reading about it

27:02

for night festival. And it is

27:05

what harmonics has been working on

27:08

where you're interacting Allah

27:10

rock band with

27:13

the notes on screen again,

27:16

but in fortnight and

27:18

they've announced that that is launching

27:21

seventh eighth Oh, that's right December 9. Yeah,

27:23

it's going to be with the weekend being

27:25

the icon and they say it's going to

27:27

have all this licensed music from stuff that

27:30

you know and love they've already had tons

27:32

of licensed music in the game. And

27:37

it what blows my mind about

27:39

all this is that these are all games

27:41

or experiences everyone to call them in fortnight.

27:45

So not that you need

27:47

to load you go into a battle

27:49

royale and then you find a part of the island and

27:51

there's the weekend performing and then you do a little rock

27:54

band minigame. It's not that it's

27:56

kind of like how you select the creator experiences

27:58

I'm assuming where they have the these other

28:00

little modes or games

28:02

that you can play, but it's all

28:04

part of Fortnite. To get there, you

28:07

have to launch Fortnite and see all

28:09

the Fortnite things. And

28:11

then you select that the way you

28:13

would select 1v1 or not 1v1, you

28:15

know, singles, doubles, whatever you wanted to

28:17

do. And that I

28:19

think is huge. Two

28:22

last things that I'll shut up here for

28:24

a bit, but like one, seeing the fruits

28:30

of harmonics and psionics

28:32

coming ripe,

28:35

I guess, and what these games might

28:37

be within Fortnite. And

28:39

then also LEGO, but also the way that

28:41

it is built within Fortnite. And

28:43

what that says for Fortnite as a

28:45

property going forward, I think

28:47

Epic sees that they still have, you know,

28:50

the Godzilla game. And I don't think they're

28:52

going to let up. And

28:54

I think it's huge for what Fortnite as

28:56

a thing will be and continues to be.

28:58

And I think this could be massive for

29:01

years to come about what Fortnite

29:03

in and of itself is. That when us old

29:05

talk about it, we're not talking

29:07

about it at the same level as

29:09

what kids view Fortnite as. Oh, Fortnite, I

29:12

love that game. And they're talking about something

29:14

totally different than the way they experience it.

29:17

I was traveling this weekend

29:19

to see family and was

29:22

hanging out with my

29:25

brother-in-law's sort

29:27

of daughters is

29:29

the wrong thing. Anyway, these two twin

29:32

girls that are, I want to

29:34

say 14, 15 years old. And

29:37

we were talking about video games. Oh, you talk about video games for

29:39

a living. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, what video

29:41

games do you play? And they both

29:43

said Fortnite. That's the only video game they play. Okay. Super

29:47

excited about it. And

29:49

they do all kinds of different kinds

29:51

of things in Fortnite. And

29:54

it's wild to me that it was

29:56

all the way back in 2021 that Epic acquired Harmonic. because

30:01

it doesn't feel like it's been two years but it

30:03

was November of 2021 that

30:06

Epic Games acquired harmonics and back

30:08

then we speculated about this

30:10

very thing Christian and here it is coming to

30:12

pass that like oh maybe they'll make like a

30:15

rock band kind of thing inside Fortnite and it

30:17

has happened. Gabe what do

30:20

you think of the the

30:22

everything app being tonight?

30:24

I was thinking that I was

30:28

like I don't even know what Fortnite is anymore

30:30

you know what I'm saying like right everything I'm

30:32

one of the right I'm one of those guys

30:34

unfortunately remember I was talking about liking being part

30:37

of the thing that's barring

30:39

Fortnite so I'm I think I've played it

30:41

twice in my whole life but

30:44

being a bystander and watching

30:46

what they've done with

30:48

licensing characters with the dancing with the

30:50

music with marshmallow and like all these

30:52

like all these events having having us

30:54

stare at a black screen with like

30:57

a little star in the middle of

30:59

it for two days you know

31:01

I just think everything they do is

31:04

so incredibly thought out

31:06

it's it's done in such

31:08

excellence it seems like if they it

31:11

seems like they rarely swing and miss and it

31:13

seems like if they do miss and they adjust

31:15

and they're able to like somehow

31:18

they're not the Titanic like it feels like

31:20

usually when you're that big of a thing

31:22

you're not able to be nimble but it

31:24

seems like they are in it in certain

31:27

instances able to be nimble and I think

31:29

it's just so incredible and a

31:31

testament to the people that work over there when I

31:33

saw the Lego thing

31:35

I was like okay number one that's adorable

31:38

number two that's amazing number three what Lego

31:40

like that's amazing and then you see the

31:42

Rocket League thing if you like I wait

31:45

what okay all right okay

31:47

maybe there's a lot of driving in the

31:50

game I don't know about and then you

31:52

see the rhythm game thing if you're like

31:54

okay hold on like still like building things

31:56

and shooting each other I'm

31:58

just so impressed because it kind of does does take

32:01

on that thing of you know Elon talked

32:03

about X being the end all be

32:05

all and do everything there right pay

32:07

for things there and sell things there and

32:09

and whatever his dream is for what that

32:11

is and it feels

32:13

like Fortnite is doing that

32:16

like they are the it's

32:18

just like you said Christian like we're

32:20

gonna all talk about Fortnite in such different

32:22

ways that we're gonna have to

32:24

then further explain what we mean by we like that

32:26

game. I love Fortnite what

32:29

are you playing it? Wordle? Oh okay.

32:31

You know the funniest thing about that

32:33

to me is that when Fortnite debuted

32:36

it was a game about building

32:38

forts and getting through the night

32:41

like that was the

32:43

game. It wasn't the battle royale.

32:45

Yeah the title like

32:47

legitimately described the game

32:50

you had to build forts and then monsters would

32:52

come at night and you tried to survive the

32:54

night it was Fortnite and it's like the

32:57

name is just an abstraction now. Yeah it means

32:59

there's no bearing on what you actually do in

33:01

the game which is everything. And

33:05

I you know I think this is I think this is

33:07

cool and I I I'm

33:09

not a Fortnite player but I think just sort of

33:11

in the abstract it's kind of neat that they keep

33:14

pushing the envelope and pushing the game to do new

33:16

different kinds of things. Beyond that and correct me if

33:18

I'm wrong then Fortnite free. Yeah

33:21

and so and I know there's a bunch of

33:23

stuff you can buy within Fortnite but like this

33:25

definitely will have I love rhythm games. Love them.

33:28

I don't play them as much as I as

33:30

much as I'd like but I love a good

33:32

rhythm game. And so like I'll definitely jump in

33:34

to try the rhythm aspect of Fortnite. Like I

33:37

don't know what all it's behind or you know

33:39

if I'm gonna have to play XYZ

33:41

to get to whatever it is. But

33:44

like I just think so.

33:46

I'm gonna be playing a rhythm game at Fortnite

33:48

just doesn't make any sense. This is so crazy

33:50

to me. I think that's what's incredible

33:52

about it. I don't think you have to like survive

33:55

four rounds. You know I think it's just a even

33:58

calling it a mode seems like a disservice. It is. a

34:00

game you select from

34:02

within the wrapper that is Fortnite. And I

34:04

think that is interesting from a business

34:07

perspective as well, because we've

34:09

seen a lot of some leaked and some admitted

34:12

documents about Epic Game Store not doing well

34:14

and not being profitable. And these aren't other

34:16

things to get you in the Epic Game

34:19

Store wrapper per se. Yes, if you play

34:21

on PC, you need to have the Epic

34:23

Game Store to get Fortnite. But then once

34:25

you do that, you have your desktop and

34:27

you launch into Fortnite pretty much directly. And

34:29

so these aren't standalone

34:32

experiences that are other games that are free

34:34

on the Epic Game Store to get people

34:36

to use that ecosystem. And again, it is

34:38

the front end is the front

34:40

end. It's fascinating. Yeah, it's wild. Like it's

34:42

about to be its own library of games.

34:44

Like, yeah, like, you launch Fortnite and then

34:46

you launch all these other things that you

34:49

want to do. That's the other thing that

34:51

occurs to me in this story is, is

34:54

there a better positioned brand

34:56

on the planet than

34:58

Lego? I think everyone

35:01

wants to be associated with

35:03

Lego. Like there isn't

35:05

a single property that

35:08

would say no to Lego. You

35:11

know what I mean? Like, everybody

35:13

wants Lego. Star Wars

35:15

wants like everybody wants to be associated with

35:17

Lego. It's got to be the one of

35:20

the most potent brands on earth.

35:22

You know, oh, yeah. I mean, the

35:25

only other thing that would be that would

35:27

surpass it is if like, like when they started

35:29

doing Mario and Lego a couple Christmas ago, I

35:31

was like, there it is. Yeah, you

35:33

know, nobody's mad at Mario. Nobody's mad at Lego.

35:36

Right. They're like these two things that just kind

35:38

of like, as we saw with the movie and

35:40

how amazing it did, you're like, Oh, I guess

35:42

people do enjoy this. And so yeah, I mean,

35:46

and it's, it's so it

35:49

tells its own story. You know, Lego is one

35:51

of those things that needs no introduction. Yeah.

35:53

And like right when you from children, they're like,

35:55

Oh, I get how this is supposed to work.

35:58

And so when you bring that into. something that's

36:00

already massive. It's like, yeah, it belongs here.

36:02

It should be here. I was watching Thursday

36:04

night football this weekend. I was traveling to

36:07

my, as I said, to my in-laws house.

36:09

We were watching Thursday night football and a

36:12

Lego ad came on that

36:14

was specifically geared toward adults. And

36:17

it literally, the catchphrase at the end was

36:19

adults welcome. And it was like a bunch

36:21

of grownups building, you know,

36:24

cars and motorcycles and, you know,

36:26

technic like advanced Legos. And

36:28

it's like, I love that

36:30

they're embracing that and

36:32

going, hey, this is forever

36:34

re-won. Anyway, I am a guy. I'm a guy

36:36

with Lego and I think it's cool. I

36:39

picture that phone call being like, you know, the

36:41

few times when you call someone and they answer

36:43

before it even rings. I feel like that was

36:45

Fortnite and Lego calling each other at the same

36:47

time. Cause they're like, no other brand is like

36:49

that. There is one other brand, it's Fortnite. That's

36:52

the other brand. And they're like, hello? I was

36:54

thinking about you, were you thinking about me? Yeah,

36:56

I was thinking about you. Were you thinking about

36:58

me? Yeah. All right, well, you guys

37:00

have left me a number of excellent stories here. I think the

37:02

one that I'm most interested

37:04

in, frankly, is

37:06

the Fallout TV series

37:09

that we know has been in

37:12

the works from Amazon Prime

37:14

Streaming, got its first

37:17

images and trailer this week. Vanity

37:20

Fair did a spread on the

37:22

show and showed a

37:24

bunch of images that I think were met with

37:26

some skepticism because, you know, static

37:29

images being as they are, a

37:31

lot of folks were kind of criticizing it as like

37:33

bad Fallout

37:36

cosplay. Sure. They

37:38

showed, you know, the power suits

37:40

and people in, you know,

37:43

the Fallout vault gear, the

37:47

vault jumpsuits and stuff. But

37:50

the trailer came out and I got a

37:53

chance to check out the trailer. I don't know if either of you guys

37:55

did, but

37:57

I think the show looks pretty good. It's

37:59

certainly got... a killer cast

38:01

and Including an

38:03

actor that just means the show is gonna

38:05

be good because he's only in good shows

38:07

and that's Walton Goggins If

38:10

one Goggins is in it is gonna be

38:12

amazing the dude just is in the best

38:14

the shield Justified righteous

38:16

gemstones. It goes on and on

38:18

and on like he just is he's just

38:21

money in the bank but it also

38:23

has a Kyle

38:26

McLaughlin from Twin Peaks. Oh,

38:29

Ella Purnell from Yellow Jackets. It looks like

38:31

she's the lead lots

38:34

of really really cool actors and Really

38:37

leaning into very recognizable

38:39

stuff From the

38:42

shows the trailer starts inside a vault

38:44

the vault opens and we have that

38:47

very iconic Bethesda games walking

38:49

out from the vault and seeing

38:51

the big expansive world beyond it

38:53

moment even in the TV show and

38:58

You know Todd Howard is Directly

39:00

involved it the trailer literally says

39:02

from the mind that brought you

39:05

Westworld meaning showrunner Jonathan Nolan and

39:08

One of the world's greatest game designers Todd Howard.

39:10

It's like oh double

39:13

billing right there and It's

39:16

gonna be here in April of 2024 April 12th is when

39:18

it debuts I'm

39:22

curious what you think of it game. What are

39:24

you excited for a fallout TV series? Okay, so

39:26

I'm gonna let you down a little bit Oh,

39:29

but I'm still gonna talk about it Never

39:31

played a fallout. Okay, every real

39:34

life There go. I'll say

39:36

this video games

39:38

to scream as Gamers

39:41

we have a weird relationship with that right it's

39:44

gone bad So many

39:46

times yeah, and then it's gone

39:49

really good a couple of

39:51

times But more recently it's gone more good,

39:53

you know, I think kind of right So

39:55

we've got the last of us on HBO,

39:57

which was like incredible, but then we had

39:59

like Halo which I don't

40:01

know how that landed with people, but it doesn't seem

40:03

like great. Not great. Yeah. Right. And

40:06

so this does look

40:08

amazing. I love Michael, what's

40:10

his name? Michael something. He

40:12

was the bad guy from Lost. He was also in,

40:15

yeah, yeah, yeah. I think

40:17

his last name starts with R. I just can't remember what it is. And

40:20

so the question always to me is, will people

40:22

love it that didn't play the game? And I

40:24

think that's something that Last of Us hit well

40:26

on, right? It was like, you didn't have to

40:28

know anything about it. I remember telling

40:30

people it was a video game. They had no

40:32

idea. And so there's always

40:35

that lens of do we love it because

40:37

we love the game? Or do we love

40:39

it because it actually looks good and something

40:41

we'd want to participate in. Kind of like,

40:43

what's that new one coming out? That's going

40:45

to be a movie. Red

40:47

Dawn, Red Moon, Red Moon. That's

40:50

going to be like the two-part thing

40:52

on Netflix and the game. The new

40:54

Zack Snyder thing. Yeah, yeah. He came

40:56

out at the Summer Games festival. And

40:59

so that's where I'm kind of sitting

41:02

back and waiting. I'm like, okay, I

41:04

have a weird relationship. So I'm a little hesitant

41:07

to just jump in and be like, that's

41:09

going to be awesome because we also had

41:11

Twisted Metal. Remember that? I don't

41:13

know if anybody remembers it. I didn't watch it, but I heard

41:15

people say it wasn't bad. Right.

41:17

Was it bad? But the hype didn't feel real. It

41:21

felt like, oh, man, that's okay. That's

41:23

Candyman. And okay, there wasn't really a story anyway.

41:25

So it's like, I feel like we're two for

41:27

one on this, like, two for

41:30

the last year. Like, where Last of Us was great.

41:32

But then we had these other two that were like,

41:34

yeah. Production

41:36

value looks high. Obviously, it's going to be.

41:39

And so we just kind of got

41:41

to wait and see because, again, I

41:43

don't have the nostalgia of Fallout to

41:45

just love just seeing the colors. Right.

41:48

Like, fair enough. The Mario trailer came out, besides

41:50

me poo-pooing the fact that they would let Chris

41:54

Pratt talk in the commercials, just

41:57

seeing Mario. I was like, oh,

41:59

yeah, baby. I'm ready. Yeah, you know what I mean?

42:01

Yeah, so I just don't have that with this Yeah,

42:04

no fair enough. I um, I

42:06

do love fallout I think you know I think

42:09

the thing that one of the things

42:11

that that I think Last of Us as a TV

42:13

series benefits from is that It's

42:18

as a video game. It's not very video

42:20

gaming. You know what I mean? They have

42:22

story it's a story but also

42:24

the story is pretty

42:27

grounded and pretty the It

42:30

the the sci-fi elements

42:33

the fantastical elements that are in it

42:36

aren't There's not a lot of

42:38

them. Yes, you downplayed. Yeah. Yes. It's very actually

42:40

about the us of Last of Us That's about

42:42

the zombies. Yeah. Yeah, and I think the farther

42:44

you get away from that I mean obviously with

42:47

with fallout like even in the trailer you're seeing

42:49

you know these big futuristic

42:51

sci-fi, you know, there's robots There's

42:53

mutants. There's a guy with no

42:55

nose, you know there's there's all

42:58

kinds of Fantastical

43:00

stuff that requires a lot of

43:02

CG and effects and stuff like that And I

43:04

think the farther you get into that The

43:07

tougher sell it might have with an audience

43:09

that's not already primed for that. Is that

43:12

guy in fallout the guy with no nose?

43:14

Yeah. Yeah, he was in for he's okay.

43:16

Cuz the first thing I was like, what

43:18

is red skull doing and I

43:20

think you know, it's like the very first

43:23

thing I thought I was like, wait a

43:25

second. This is fallout, right? You like

43:27

kind of look back at the title like, okay. Yeah Yeah,

43:30

yeah Christian you know

43:32

you've been such a fan of the fallout TV series

43:35

as well and and I think less so of fallout

43:38

games, but What did

43:40

you make of the trailer? I

43:42

think it's a fantastic trailer The only thing that

43:44

I didn't like about the trailer was

43:46

the from the studio that brought you it

43:48

said like whatever Lord of the

43:50

Rings or some show that they did and then it

43:53

goes and also free two-day shipping like That's

44:00

not the tone, it was so not the tone

44:02

of the rest of the trailer. I know, it

44:04

wasn't at all, but it was very funny. I

44:06

thought it was very funny. That

44:08

felt like a weird thing. I was like, oh, does

44:11

that make me think this is going to be good? Like

44:13

I don't... Yeah. Okay.

44:16

From the studio behind the boys and fast delivery. Yeah. Yeah.

44:19

That's basically what it's... That's what it was. Yeah.

44:22

Yeah. It's like from the studio who's going

44:24

to be covering all of the boxes of things

44:27

you buy with tape that says, Fallout

44:29

the show on it. That's right. That

44:32

felt weird, but I think... From the studio

44:34

that's hiring your grandma for two months and

44:36

then playing her off. Oh, man. Oh,

44:39

wow. Speaking of the Fallout. Yeah, that's Walmart,

44:41

you're right. I

44:43

think as a trailer, it's very effective. I

44:46

think it hit all the things that I

44:48

would want it to hit. It shows as

44:50

a trailer respect and reverence

44:52

for the source material. I

44:54

think having Todd Howard's name front and center does

44:57

a lot of that. As you mentioned, Jeff, having

44:59

the vault reveal does a lot of that. Showing

45:01

the power armor does a lot of that. And

45:04

it also looks really good and

45:07

it doesn't tell you tons, which I think

45:09

is a very effective trailer. It's

45:12

not like, and this woman,

45:14

out of vault 27, has to find her

45:16

child and a mission across this wasteland. It

45:18

kind of like leaves you to wonder, which

45:20

I think if you don't know the game

45:22

series is very effective. She's like, oh, this

45:25

looks cool. My question for

45:27

the show is, what's

45:29

the show? Because Fallout,

45:31

I think to so many people,

45:34

isn't go rescue your son. You

45:37

woken up from it. Everything else. Fallout

45:40

is the story you find around the corner. It's

45:43

the thing that you do on the way to

45:45

the thing. And I'm curious what

45:47

the big story is and how

45:50

compelling that is to a mass

45:52

audience. And I think things like

45:54

Dungeons and Dragons and large open

45:58

ended properties have often struggled. with

46:00

that was saying World of Warcraft this

46:02

is the story and wow has a

46:05

Warcraft has had story but people don't

46:07

necessarily play it for that

46:09

story and so I'm curious if game

46:11

fans are like yeah this is the

46:13

story I pictured and then if general

46:15

folks find it interesting enough to

46:17

want to go for the ride. That's a

46:19

really good point because I think that's what

46:22

sorry Jeff I mean no please um

46:25

it seems like that's what Jeff's hitting on

46:27

right the last of us as a show

46:30

doesn't have that big a uphill battle because

46:32

here's the story act

46:34

this well now

46:37

there was that little change that

46:39

even Neil Druckmann talked about with uh

46:41

Sam and uh gosh

46:43

his brother I forget and he was deaf in the show

46:45

but he wasn't deaf in the game yeah

46:47

they made some they made some changes that were and Neil was

46:50

like that was a great change I wish I would have thought

46:52

of that um and

46:54

so as a Fallout fan what do you

46:56

hope the story is because as

46:59

somebody who I have no idea what Fallout

47:01

even about um what what do

47:03

you hope it is do you hope it's

47:05

like go save somebody from another shelter or

47:07

what do you what do you hope it is well Howard

47:11

Todd Howard has said that it is

47:13

not a story lifted from the games

47:15

that it's an original tale set in

47:17

the universe of Fallout which I think

47:19

is probably wise and and scary yeah

47:22

a little scary but I think the

47:25

central hook of the Fallout

47:27

games is compelling dramatically in

47:29

that the idea of the

47:31

fallout of a Fallout game is there's

47:34

people that were put in

47:36

these vaults these fallout shelters because

47:38

there was you know nuclear fallout

47:41

and they come out and

47:43

the world has changed they've been there

47:45

for decades presumably Lucy

47:47

the main character here uh that's

47:50

uh played by the actress from Yellow

47:52

Jackets Ella Purnell um presumably

47:54

she is she never knew the world

47:57

outside the vault right it happened she

47:59

was raised in there, you know,

48:01

because she's young, I'm assuming that's what they're gonna,

48:03

you know, the premise is going to be, I've

48:06

lived my whole life inside this very

48:09

sheltered shelter, you

48:12

know, that this this place that is contained,

48:14

and we never saw the outside world. And

48:16

then one day, the door opens,

48:18

and we walk out into this crazy

48:21

world of mutants and, you

48:23

know, shanty towns and all kinds

48:25

of stuff. And I think, I think that's

48:27

compelling. That's interesting already. That's, that's not a

48:29

story. That's a premise. But I

48:31

think he's a jumping off point for a

48:33

story. And then her as a fish out

48:36

of water in that world and encountering people

48:38

and having to survive and make her way

48:40

in that larger world can make

48:42

for a pretty interesting story. So that's, that's what

48:44

I suspect it will be about. But

48:48

you know, I don't know. And I think

48:50

I think it can have all kinds of

48:53

different tales, episodic tales, and in that context

48:55

of like, wandering to the next town over

48:57

and finding the mystery of that town, and

48:59

there's something going down, and she's got to

49:01

help whatever, whatever. As

49:04

a player of Fallout, is there something

49:06

special about your person that you're playing?

49:09

Because I'm wondering, like, what's special about this

49:11

girl? Yeah, sometimes, I mean, sometimes, you know, you

49:13

are the everybody died in your vault, except

49:15

you or, you know, they brought

49:17

you out because of x, y or z, and

49:19

you're the only one who can do x, y

49:21

or z, y. You know, there's those kinds of

49:23

things. So perhaps they'll be something like that. But

49:25

I think just the fact that the

49:28

world has been going on, on the surface,

49:30

you weren't part of it. And now you

49:32

have to join it, you being this main

49:34

character of this TV show. I

49:36

think that's interesting.

49:39

And I'm down for it. I'm excited for this show.

49:41

I'm looking forward to it. So

49:44

it looks like they spent a lot of money on it. So

49:46

yeah, it does. Yeah. All right. Well,

49:49

let's get to the games that we have

49:51

been playing. But first, a quick break for

49:53

a sponsor. Time for us

49:56

to tell you about our sponsor, uncommon goods.

49:58

I got bad news for you, Christian. I

50:00

got bad news. It's

50:02

time to really buy Christmas gifts for

50:04

everybody you know. The

50:07

holidays are coming, the holidays are here,

50:09

Christmas shopping is happening, and if you

50:11

have not done your shopping yet, don't

50:14

panic, because there's still

50:16

time to find those incredible original

50:19

gifts, the gifts that

50:21

make people go, wow, where did you

50:23

get this? Well, the

50:25

name of the place is Uncommon Goods.

50:28

uncommongoods.com has the absolute best

50:30

gifts for everybody in your

50:32

life. We're talking moms, we're

50:34

talking dads, we're talking teens,

50:36

in-laws, best friends, your one

50:38

and only, every single person

50:40

that you know. And it's

50:42

not stuff that you can

50:44

find just anywhere, because Uncommon

50:47

Goods has unique and creative

50:49

gifts, often handmade by

50:51

independent artists and makers. So

50:53

you can skip the gifts that screen last minute

50:56

and find something truly original at

50:59

uncommongoods.com. Christian, I know

51:01

that you have had a

51:03

lot of success with uncommongoods.com,

51:05

finding those cool, hard

51:08

to find, original, unique, where

51:11

did you get that type gifts? Yeah,

51:13

we were at a kid's birthday party recently, and

51:15

I got there early, and I saw the parents

51:17

setting up, and I saw the box. I talked

51:19

about before how we got great

51:21

office holiday and birthday gifts from Uncommon Goods,

51:23

and also a gift for my oldest daughter

51:26

for her birthday. So I recognized the box,

51:28

and I went over, I was like, ooh,

51:30

what are you guys setting up for

51:32

party favors? And they got awesome party

51:34

favors that were these custom

51:37

card prints for the theme of the

51:39

party that went in each favor that

51:42

all the kids loved. It was beautiful,

51:44

really cool art. And then for, I'll

51:46

talk quieter in case they're awake, hopefully

51:48

not, we did some holiday shopping of

51:51

our own, and my

51:53

daughter loves to draw and loves doing

51:55

prompt games with drawing and stuff like

51:57

that. And we found this really cool thing.

52:00

called Art Out of the Box

52:02

Solo Drawing Game. And

52:04

it provides you with really cool

52:07

pictures, like it looks very

52:09

hip and really cute drawings

52:12

on each card and it creates a game

52:14

out of expanding

52:16

your creativity in drawing. So you pick one card and

52:19

it tells you the technique to do. And it's like,

52:21

oh, do this with your opposite hand or do it

52:23

with keeping your pen

52:26

on the paper the whole time. And it's like when

52:28

draw, find one thing specific in

52:30

your room and make it a

52:32

repeating pattern on the next object

52:34

and you pull another card. So

52:36

it kind of gamifies doodling in

52:38

a way and you can play it with a

52:40

group or if you're kind of by yourself, it's

52:43

just really cool creative prompts. They look great, they

52:45

feel great in the hand and I love things

52:47

like that that kind of kickstart your imagination. So

52:50

when we found that for our kids, we

52:52

were very excited about it and hopefully they

52:54

don't listen to this episode and find out about

52:56

it at the time. Well,

54:12

Alright, let's talk about

54:14

the games that we have been playing

54:16

lately in the segment we call

54:18

The Playlist. Who's

54:21

the player of the game

54:23

that you like most? Who's

54:25

the player of the playlist?

54:29

Gabe, what have you been playing

54:31

lately? A couple different things,

54:33

which is usually not my bag. Usually I play one

54:35

thing at a time because I'm an old man and I

54:38

forget the controls of the thing I was playing the

54:40

day before that I'm playing the thing today. I'm

54:43

grinding away with my sons

54:46

on the Platinum for Spider-Man

54:49

2. Beat the game a

54:51

while back, but now we're kind of collecting

54:53

all the Spider-Bots and doing all the little

54:55

extra things. So that's been

54:58

fun. They absolutely love the

55:00

Spider-Man games. I love the Spider-Man

55:02

games. We were all hype for

55:04

the second one to come out. I

55:07

love that it's only on PS5, but it's

55:09

also Daddy's PS5. So

55:14

how are you doing now? Are you doing life

55:16

for level? How's that working? They

55:19

have a save and I have a save. So,

55:23

okay, real quick. My kids are

55:25

young. My boys are eight and seven. And

55:28

so I had this weird dichotomy, right? Because I don't

55:31

know if you remember, but in Peter

55:33

Parker's Spider-Man, the first one in 2018, there's

55:36

a lot of cussing in that game. For

55:39

whatever reason, the bad guys cuss a lot in that

55:41

game. We're not a

55:43

household that cusses, especially with our children.

55:47

Then Miles Morales comes along. Miles

55:50

Morales is way cleaner than

55:53

Peter Parker's. There's still a little cussing,

55:56

like that was in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. level

56:00

in that movie. PG-13. PG,

56:02

really. Kind of. Kind of.

56:05

You know, especially comparatively.

56:08

And so it was kind of one of those things

56:10

where my kids started seeing the commercials and they were

56:12

getting so hyped. And I just

56:14

couldn't tell them like, wait till daddy plays

56:16

the whole thing. And

56:18

then, and so what ends up happening is

56:20

I take my PS5 into the living room

56:23

and we play it together just in case

56:25

like something weird pops off or just

56:27

in case venom scares them and we've got it,

56:29

you know what I'm saying? And so

56:31

that's kind of how we handled it. So they watched me play

56:34

it. And what I what we would do

56:36

is I would play the story beats and

56:38

then they would like kind of get us from place

56:40

to place. So they would do the crimes and they

56:42

would do other things that were like in between. And

56:45

then now since we've gone through it and it's fairly

56:48

clean, which I was really

56:50

grateful for now, they've got their

56:52

own save and they've already beat the game and

56:54

now they're doing extra stuff as well. And so

56:56

that's how we're handling that. So I've been playing

56:58

a lot of Spider-Man 2. I've

57:01

been playing a ton of

57:03

Disney speed store. I

57:06

didn't like that game. I

57:08

kind of bought it to support it and then never

57:10

downloaded it. And then once it went free of place,

57:13

I downloaded it on like all the things, right? So

57:15

that my kids can have them on their switches and

57:17

stuff like that, just in case they got attached to

57:19

it. So I've been playing a lot of Disney speed

57:21

storm. And

57:23

then the new Call of Duty. I'm

57:26

a sucker for Call of Duty. I

57:29

don't care about almost anything.

57:31

It just feels right. Don't

57:33

change anything. It's the perfect game. Kind

57:36

of like Mario Kart. It's like, don't change.

57:38

Don't change anything. It's perfect. Just

57:41

give me more. Just give me more. And I

57:43

don't care that it's reskinned. I don't care if

57:45

it's deep or shallow. It just

57:47

feels good. Throw me a multiplayer and I'm

57:49

happy. So those are the three that I've

57:51

been kind of bouncing around the most lately.

57:53

That's awesome. Let's dig in a little bit

57:55

because I haven't

57:57

played any of Disney with speed

57:59

stir. Is it speedster speed storm

58:01

speed storm? That's right. I knew

58:04

that and I did not recall it But

58:06

this is it's like the Mario Kart of

58:08

from with Disney characters, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah,

58:10

and we're a big Disney family We try

58:12

to go as often as we can I'm

58:15

too grown to like it as much as I do But

58:18

I love it. And so yeah, it's just

58:20

been really fun a lot of the voice actors returned for

58:22

it Which is really great. And

58:24

so just hearing those guys and

58:27

those just those voices that you know, so

58:29

well You know Bill Farmer who does goofy?

58:31

Yeah, right when he's like he's at I

58:34

think he's up it He's up at a con in

58:36

Columbus right now and he yeah, Columbus, Ohio and he

58:38

just put up a video of himself He's like, hey

58:40

Bill Farmer here, you know, I brought some of my

58:42

friends with me, you know Goofy and he kind of

58:45

goes into it and you're like, oh my gosh And

58:49

so just hearing those voices the guy that does

58:51

genie is really great You

58:53

know, they get Tom Hanks his brother actually

58:55

to do woody And so

58:58

they've got the same kind of voice and and then

59:00

I think they had homeboy come back

59:02

who played Hades in Gosh,

59:05

what's his name in Hercules? Oh,

59:07

yeah Big movie

59:09

star. Anyway, he's he's back and and

59:11

voice he has to be back. There's

59:13

a he is he's saying stuff James

59:17

oh You're so close that is right

59:19

real quick Hades After

59:22

dizzy it's right there and none of it people are

59:25

young James Woods James would would He's

59:28

done said some stuff online that like he's not a

59:30

great person People want to make

59:32

it out of but he's got it a

59:34

great contract with Disney. We're like, yeah, they

59:36

have to use him It's pretty really like

59:38

is that like back on the ride or

59:40

was like why yeah, and it's like yeah

59:45

That's hilarious. I don't know anything about that. So

59:47

sorry, but he's in the game That's

59:49

also I have a really bad memory and it's really great

59:51

because I forget who I'm supposed to be mad at but

59:55

So, yeah, Disney sweet storm is yeah, it's definitely

59:57

Mario Kart with Disney characters and they actually Uh

1:00:00

did it really well and it feels really good.

1:00:02

The controls are a little different So it took

1:00:04

me a second to wrap my brain around them

1:00:06

just the drifting and using the items and then

1:00:08

how it's broken down is like certain characters are

1:00:11

Certain things so like somebody's a trickster So

1:00:13

the powers they get are gonna jack up

1:00:15

other riders. Some people are brawler So the

1:00:17

the items they get it's not like mario

1:00:19

kart where everybody gets all the items It's

1:00:22

like some characters get some of the items that go

1:00:24

along with the kind of racer they are Um,

1:00:26

and so that's really cool. Just because it it balances

1:00:28

out how you play the game multiplayer

1:00:31

is good and quick and um And

1:00:34

yeah, and you unlock there's a bunch

1:00:37

of characters in this game. Yeah, you kind

1:00:39

of unlock them as as you go Um

1:00:41

right now they're doing uh frozen They're

1:00:44

doing arendel and so the girls and

1:00:46

ola and christoph and all those guys

1:00:48

are are able are new players to

1:00:50

the game So

1:00:52

it's really great. It's free. Um We

1:00:54

didn't spend any money on it I mean I bought it

1:00:56

I bought the early thing but like as far as my

1:00:58

kids and their accounts That we haven't had to buy anything

1:01:01

for them to still enjoy uh the

1:01:03

game. It's great hearing mickey and daffy

1:01:05

and donald I mean mickey

1:01:07

and donald always put daffy in there.

1:01:10

Uh, uh Daffy

1:01:12

duck in there. Um, but daisy and many

1:01:14

and all them. So yeah, it's a really

1:01:16

good time I really I really like in

1:01:18

the game and then the music is really

1:01:20

great They take the songs that you know

1:01:22

from the lands and they remix them and

1:01:24

they make them really fun and that's cool

1:01:26

Yeah, that's awesome. That's uh

1:01:28

disney's Uh speed storm.

1:01:31

Yes. Oh, yeah, the name always eludes

1:01:33

me Uh, now the call of duty

1:01:35

that you're you're playing modern warfare 3.

1:01:37

Yeah, that's right. I'm sure

1:01:39

which I understand I have no idea which

1:01:41

one it is. Yeah You're the guy you're

1:01:43

one of the guys that Ignores

1:01:46

the campaign, right? You're just hopping a multi-phase. I

1:01:48

don't care about the campaign. It's actually a campaign

1:01:50

guy Okay, every every call of duty. It's only

1:01:52

been the last two for some reason I've just

1:01:55

I think because I got a little friend group

1:01:57

that loves playing multiplayer and so they kind of

1:01:59

send the text out and it's like, yep, I'm

1:02:01

there. Yep, I'm there. Yeah, I'm there. And so we hop

1:02:03

on and a bunch of musicians that

1:02:05

I know here in Nashville, and we

1:02:08

all play together and it's just super

1:02:10

duper fun on my Twitter. Actually, I

1:02:12

put up I just

1:02:14

got off tour. And so I was putting up

1:02:16

like, my little setups and we

1:02:18

would find like the press box that would overlook the

1:02:20

whole arena. And so you see like the stage getting

1:02:22

set up and you see me like sitting there playing

1:02:24

Call of Duty. And that's rad. I love playing it

1:02:26

all around the country. And so it's

1:02:29

been really it's been really fun

1:02:31

just jumping back in there because it's, it's

1:02:34

perfect. It's the perfect first person shooter. It's

1:02:36

tight, the sliding the jumping that you know,

1:02:38

everything just feels right. It's not like some

1:02:40

like, you know, I remember when I first played

1:02:43

Fortnite actually, when it first came out, and how

1:02:45

the bullets bent and how it like, I was

1:02:47

like, am I in a pool?

1:02:49

Like I don't understand like how. But yeah,

1:02:52

I couldn't tell you which Call of Duty it

1:02:54

is. Modern Warfare 3 sounds right. And

1:02:56

I just I play them every year. I

1:02:58

play them every year. Awesome. Very cool. Christian

1:03:02

Spicer, what is on your playlist? Well,

1:03:05

it'd be suicide for me to talk

1:03:08

about what I've been playing. Oh, a

1:03:11

lot of I won't I won't I

1:03:13

won't do that. But a game

1:03:16

that I've been playing that I really

1:03:18

like that I can talk about that

1:03:20

I had missed before is El Paso

1:03:23

elsewhere. Oh, yeah. Yeah,

1:03:29

I played a bunch of this as well. While back. El

1:03:32

Paso elsewhere. I think it came out in

1:03:34

September. I think it had a Steam

1:03:36

Next Fest demo. I think I first

1:03:38

saw it when the developer was on kind

1:03:41

of funnies indie games showcase that they

1:03:43

do I think was around GDC. Shout

1:03:45

out to kind of funny and the light

1:03:48

they shine on so many great games and

1:03:50

how the user platform do that. It's awesome.

1:03:53

And I had kind of missed this game. It's like, Oh, I

1:03:55

should play it. I should play it. I never got around to

1:03:57

it. And I think it was now on

1:04:00

on Paste magazine's top 30 games of

1:04:02

the year list. They come out their

1:04:04

list. I think Paste's list is always

1:04:06

very interesting. Like there's always the things

1:04:08

that you know in there. Like, yeah,

1:04:10

uh-huh. And then I feel like there's

1:04:12

always really interesting things. And

1:04:14

they usually do a good job articulating

1:04:16

why that game is in there. And it's like, no, yeah, it

1:04:18

had this glitch and the graphics aren't great, but it made me

1:04:21

feel this way or it made me think about what a game

1:04:23

could be this way. And if memory

1:04:25

serves, El Paso elsewhere, I think

1:04:27

was their number two game this year. And I was

1:04:29

like, okay, Steam wish list.

1:04:32

Yeah, I don't know. Time to move into the

1:04:34

actual library. So

1:04:39

I bought El Paso elsewhere. It's

1:04:41

incredible. I have not rolled credits on

1:04:43

it just yet because

1:04:46

of suicides. Not,

1:04:49

you know, it doesn't, okay, said too much. I

1:04:52

think you can say it was available. People are playing it. But

1:04:55

so I haven't rolled credits on El Paso

1:04:58

elsewhere, but it is Max Payne inspired,

1:05:00

heavily Max Payne inspired.

1:05:03

And Max Payne with vampires. Is

1:05:06

that what it is? Basically. Yes. But

1:05:09

also like leaning into the Max Payne kind of

1:05:11

dream sequences, but not in like the annoying, I

1:05:13

think it was Max Payne too that did it

1:05:15

more. I was like a lot of baby crying

1:05:17

in a corner. I did not like

1:05:19

go insane. Walk along the bloodline. Oh,

1:05:21

I don't like that. Don't fall off

1:05:23

the bloodline. Oh my God. It has

1:05:26

a wall that melts in a baby

1:05:28

cry. So it's like the good parts

1:05:30

of that, if that makes sense, because

1:05:32

also, like you mentioned, Jeff, we just

1:05:34

did an Alan Wake 2 spoiler chat with Philippe,

1:05:36

Alex and I, and so I'm very much team

1:05:38

remedy. I love, I love remedy. I love what

1:05:40

they're putting out. I love what they're doing. And

1:05:42

El Paso elsewhere feels like a remedy

1:05:45

game in that way of going back to Max

1:05:48

Payne and Max Payne too. And

1:05:50

it does the thing with the full screen title

1:05:52

card coming in and saying like, you know, the

1:05:55

level you're on, at the end of level, you

1:05:57

get this really great music sound up the game

1:05:59

uses music beautifully. sleep throughout. But this

1:06:01

game also looks like a PS2

1:06:04

era game. It very much looks

1:06:06

like Max Payne, the rough polygonal

1:06:08

shapes, the kind of flat textures

1:06:11

for faces. But it

1:06:13

takes this idea of your,

1:06:15

the protagonist's girlfriend is

1:06:18

a vampire, and like the head

1:06:20

vampire, and you get this really cool story

1:06:22

going on of like, I should have seen

1:06:25

this coming. I was

1:06:27

an idiot to think it wouldn't go this way. But

1:06:30

love makes you do stupid stuff. He

1:06:33

like gets his pills, eats them, and he's

1:06:35

like, I always knew this was going to

1:06:37

be a one-way trip. Just

1:06:40

got to get it done. And it's like, oh, there's

1:06:42

even pills in it. Yeah, there's pills.

1:06:44

I said there's pills in it because Max

1:06:46

Payne had the pills too. Yeah, yes, yes.

1:06:48

And so it like really leans into it.

1:06:50

It's like an homage, and it has the

1:06:52

bullet time and the diving. But it's also

1:06:55

because you're going into this motel in

1:06:57

El Paso that is elsewhere. It's

1:06:59

like transformed by this vampiric

1:07:02

energy. Like as you're going down the

1:07:04

elevator, like the world falls out. And

1:07:06

you're just kind of in this on

1:07:08

this elevator chain going

1:07:10

down into this vast nothing list. And he's

1:07:12

just like, yeah, I

1:07:16

should have known that was going to happen.

1:07:18

You know, it's like, there's like no roof

1:07:20

on the hotel at all. It's like this

1:07:22

nebulous other world. Yeah, hotel,

1:07:24

but then there's like no roof on it. And

1:07:26

then some levels later on again, like doors are floating

1:07:29

above. And you walk through the first time and nothing

1:07:31

happens. And you come through the second time and vampires

1:07:33

fall out of those doors. So it

1:07:35

like sets up this kind of tension, not

1:07:37

Alan Wake two level of tension, but like

1:07:39

does a really good job kind of keeping

1:07:41

you on your toes. And then the shooting

1:07:43

is it's still really fun. Like

1:07:45

Max Payne to Max Payne one, those games

1:07:47

hold up mechanically. And this takes from that

1:07:50

and kind of tightens it, it makes it

1:07:52

feel modern, it feels like how I think

1:07:55

Max Payne one played, you know, at a

1:07:57

great frame rate in great

1:08:00

resolution, but yet still using those, the

1:08:03

homage graphics. And again, a

1:08:05

absolutely killer soundtrack.

1:08:08

So I sat on

1:08:10

this game for too long and I think, you

1:08:12

know, I don't know if it'll make my top

1:08:14

five favorites of the year, but for where I

1:08:16

am right now, I'll probably singing it out again

1:08:19

as a other five, I think a lot of

1:08:21

people probably missed this game like I did. And

1:08:23

if you were looking for that auction packed

1:08:26

running and gunning, you know,

1:08:28

jumping in and doing stuff and doing

1:08:30

it well, and with

1:08:32

a really cool story, I don't want to like spoil

1:08:34

where the story goes, but like, it's

1:08:37

super interesting. Like, yeah, it's kind of cheesy

1:08:39

and dripping in this

1:08:41

idea of like, you know,

1:08:43

noir, but like really

1:08:45

cool. And like, as it changes and

1:08:47

evolves with them, like the larger mythology

1:08:49

of the world, where he's like, yeah,

1:08:52

but I've also fought griffins and

1:08:54

unicorns. That one was a real jerk.

1:08:56

You know, it's like, oh,

1:08:59

it's just really fun. It's really,

1:09:01

really fun. El Paso elsewhere. Um,

1:09:04

a really, a real gem of an indie game, I

1:09:06

think. That's interesting. I, uh,

1:09:09

I played this several weeks ago and I never brought it

1:09:11

up on the show because I, I just

1:09:13

did not vibe with this game at all. Whoa.

1:09:16

Yeah. The exact opposite. Yeah.

1:09:19

I didn't want to bring it up and

1:09:21

just, uh, uh, but I, I, but now

1:09:23

that I liked it, floodgate, well, you bring

1:09:26

it up. I know. I

1:09:28

know. I know. I know. I know. Weigh in

1:09:30

on my opinion. I don't think you, you mentioned

1:09:32

it being looking like PS2. I don't think it looks

1:09:34

like a PS1 game, but it's

1:09:36

very, it's very primitive looking. I mean, it's intentionally

1:09:39

so, right? It's intentionally so, but I

1:09:41

don't think I don't want people to

1:09:43

get the wrong idea. This is a very primitive looking game.

1:09:45

Right. It's very, um, it's those

1:09:47

retro polygonal, you know, it's 4k, but

1:09:50

it's very purposely,

1:09:52

like virtual fighter. Right.

1:09:55

It looks, it's very, very, very,

1:09:58

uh, primitive looking, which is. That's

1:10:00

that's an aesthetic that it's going for and

1:10:03

I think the the strongest element of this

1:10:05

game is the

1:10:08

the fun cinematic The

1:10:11

cinematics which are I mean it does a lot of really

1:10:13

cool stuff with quick cuts

1:10:15

and and Angles

1:10:18

like it'll like underneath the guy's head and

1:10:20

to the right of the guy's head as

1:10:22

he's like I was not there You know,

1:10:24

it's like changing camera angles each line or

1:10:27

it'll do fun It'll do fun stuff like

1:10:29

that. And I think that's where it's strongest.

1:10:32

I thought the actual Gameplay

1:10:35

it just I was not vibing with it at all. It did not

1:10:37

click with me. I Adore

1:10:39

the max paying games adore the max

1:10:42

paying games They

1:10:45

played them, you know as they came out and

1:10:47

and they hold a very special place in my

1:10:49

heart at a very special time in my life

1:10:51

same This

1:10:53

game is sort of it adds like a

1:10:55

drive a stick to the heart of the Vampire

1:10:58

thing and you can get stakes by breaking

1:11:01

Anything in the environment will leave like a wooden stake

1:11:03

and you know There's a you walk it through this

1:11:06

hotel room and there's a chair You can smash the

1:11:08

chair and you'll have a steak and it

1:11:10

does I my experience was that

1:11:12

it used that as a way to Mitigate

1:11:15

the fact that you're kind of always out of ammo And

1:11:18

I did not I did not find the

1:11:21

melee steak combat to be very fun or

1:11:23

satisfying and I

1:11:26

don't know. I just I

1:11:28

didn't think it got to the max plant pain Formula

1:11:33

It felt like a riff on a riff.

1:11:36

It didn't it didn't feel like it was it

1:11:38

nailed it for me I love

1:11:40

the fact that you love it Christian. I'm not trying

1:11:42

to disparage it I just giving a counterpoint to the

1:11:44

fact that I I was pretty disappointed

1:11:46

with this one and it bounced off of it

1:11:50

It just was not vibing with it at all But I

1:11:53

know a lot of people really think highly of it If

1:11:56

folks are thinking about giving it a try what I also really love

1:11:58

about the game is right when you start a level or

1:12:00

start the game, you're presented with these

1:12:02

options, not even call it, it's

1:12:04

not even difficulty. Yes, there's difficulty. But below

1:12:06

that, you can see the granular things that

1:12:08

it changes. So if you go from like

1:12:11

standard, and you put it on story mode

1:12:13

or whatever, it's like, oh, this gives me

1:12:15

I do 2x damage

1:12:17

on enemies, and they do point 5x damage

1:12:19

on me, and I have this much more

1:12:21

slow mo and then you can go in

1:12:23

and tweak that stuff yourself. And you can

1:12:25

also turn on what I turned on was

1:12:27

auto reload. I found the manual

1:12:30

reload button to take me out of the flow

1:12:32

of the jumping and the slow mo and all

1:12:34

the stuff I wanted to be doing. So I

1:12:36

turned on auto reload, but you can also turn

1:12:38

on unlimited ammo. And it's all just there for

1:12:40

you. And I love when games do that. I

1:12:43

think I grew through the first few levels, I

1:12:45

felt resource starved in terms of ammo. Later, when

1:12:48

I have like my SMG and my shotgun, I feel

1:12:50

like I was just getting more and

1:12:52

more ammo than I would have needed. But I

1:12:54

love that that stuff's there. And it doesn't penalize

1:12:56

it, it doesn't make it feel lesser. It's kind

1:12:58

of like, here's this cool action game we've made.

1:13:01

And we want you to experience it. And every

1:13:03

time you start the game, when you go to

1:13:05

a new level that those set of options are

1:13:07

there for you. So I think if you are

1:13:09

playing at your listener, and you kind of feel

1:13:11

that one of those edges is ruining the experience

1:13:13

for you change it, change

1:13:15

it and go back because I think the game wants

1:13:17

you to play your way, which I love. It's,

1:13:19

it's pretty funny too, when you die, it's like,

1:13:22

that's not how it happened. And then if you

1:13:24

die again, and that's it'll be like, that's not

1:13:27

how it happened. Like it's, it's

1:13:30

like, come on, pal. Stop dying on

1:13:32

that thing. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's very

1:13:34

funny. Yeah, I love it. It

1:13:37

was like 20 bucks. I think it was like on sale for 15

1:13:39

bucks on Steam sale. So it and

1:13:41

it runs great on deck too. When

1:13:43

it launched, apparently it didn't, but it runs really well in

1:13:45

Steam Deck now. So I've been loving it

1:13:48

there as well. Again, it's called

1:13:50

El Paso elsewhere. Yes,

1:13:52

sir. What else is on your playlist? Or

1:13:54

remember how I said we did an Alan

1:13:56

Wake 2 spoiler chat and how I love

1:13:59

remedy. Well guess

1:14:01

what uncle Christian did I started

1:14:03

to replaying Quantum break.

1:14:05

Oh man. We're like they can't

1:14:07

have made a bad game And

1:14:11

I was like, I remember playing quantum break and talking

1:14:13

about it on this very show Years

1:14:16

ago, you're not really liking it.

1:14:19

Oh really? Yeah, it's like I didn't

1:14:21

I did not like it when I first played it I

1:14:24

love this game. Jeff. It's so good. Oh, man.

1:14:27

You are you're hurting Really? Your

1:14:30

Kool-Aid went down fine It's

1:14:32

so it may be also I think I'm just

1:14:35

in a different headspace So I've

1:14:37

skipped all the TV episodes and

1:14:39

it's like you want to I'm like, no I do not You

1:14:44

do not want to watch that and so far

1:14:46

I don't think the story I'm missing anything It

1:14:48

was like this awkward thing of like we want

1:14:50

them to it's kind of like do I have

1:14:52

to watch? She Hulk Disney's

1:14:55

like yeah, you do also. No, you don't you know,

1:14:57

it's like that's what they're all going to read Christian

1:14:59

Don't use that as the example Did

1:15:02

I have to watch it? Do I have to

1:15:04

watch? moon night with your

1:15:06

soldier That was very

1:15:08

good. Oh man. Okay now blood is drawn. Um

1:15:11

But I've been skipping the TV show cuz I

1:15:13

feel like I don't need that the games gonna tell its own story

1:15:17

I'm playing on PC mostly and it

1:15:19

looks really good. I think and it runs really

1:15:21

well I think if you put this up against

1:15:23

some games that came out this year, I don't

1:15:26

think people like oh You're playing a game that came out. I think it's 2016

1:15:29

It does not look and feel like that old of

1:15:31

the game when I'm playing on PC some levels I

1:15:33

had a weird lighting bug. It's like I wonder if

1:15:36

this is the game and Purposefully

1:15:38

doing this for like atmosphere or not. So I

1:15:40

loaded it up on my series X as well

1:15:44

And it was a lighting bug I had on PC

1:15:46

It doesn't run quite as well on series X with

1:15:49

like the up res or whatever version of it that

1:15:51

it is But it's still a stunning

1:15:53

game It looks really good and I think I

1:15:55

need to go back and listen to the episode

1:15:57

But I think I was just playing it air

1:15:59

quotes wrong. I think when it

1:16:01

came out, I was playing it. We

1:16:04

were in the era of the third person

1:16:06

cover shooter, whether it was Uncharted or Gears

1:16:08

of War. And I would get behind

1:16:10

cover and you pop out and you throw your grenade or

1:16:13

you use your ability, then you find new cover and then

1:16:15

you kind of do that again. And if

1:16:17

I remember correctly, that's kind of how I was

1:16:19

playing Quantum Break. And I'm not

1:16:21

playing it that way anymore. I am playing Quantum

1:16:24

Break like I'm Jesse Fatum in control. I

1:16:26

am flying around these levels. My

1:16:29

powers are only not being

1:16:31

used for that brief moment when they're in

1:16:33

their cooldown. I am just this symphony

1:16:36

of destruction, just constantly moving,

1:16:38

firing off all of

1:16:40

my abilities. And I really see how

1:16:43

they got to control, like how Quantum

1:16:45

Break got to Jesse. And Quantum

1:16:47

Break, you have this air dash and

1:16:49

control. I feel like they're like, what

1:16:51

if you could just fly? Yes,

1:16:54

please. And so it kind of like elevates all

1:16:56

of these things. But man, if you

1:16:58

got the shield, you have the time bubble distortion,

1:17:00

you can hold it to launch a big one,

1:17:02

you can dash. And when you upgrade your dash,

1:17:05

it reveals where your enemies are. There's even a,

1:17:09

what is it, like a multi round

1:17:11

pistol that really feels like the service

1:17:14

revolver from control. And

1:17:16

I just am playing it totally differently.

1:17:18

We're engaging with the

1:17:20

game in a different way. And I'm also blown

1:17:23

away by either

1:17:25

how they paid off loose ends that they set up

1:17:27

in this game, or the

1:17:29

geniuses that remedy truly are with all

1:17:32

of the stuff that exists

1:17:35

in Alan Wake 2 in

1:17:37

this game, there's stuff in Quantum Break

1:17:39

within the first five minutes. That

1:17:42

is so beautifully

1:17:45

realized in Alan Wake 2, I

1:17:47

just can't comprehend what their

1:17:50

conspiracy theory board of this stuff looks like. I

1:17:52

mean, there's a chalkboard of stuff laid out that

1:17:54

I was sitting there reading and I was sending

1:17:56

it to Alex and Philippe being like, what? We

1:18:00

just talked about for the spoiler chat, they're right! Unbelievable,

1:18:03

but if you are like me and slept

1:18:05

on Quantum Break but really loved Control, I

1:18:08

think it plays great, it's on Game Pass,

1:18:10

and play it like Jesse Fadum, don't use

1:18:12

cover. You kind of autocrouch behind cover, nah.

1:18:15

No, cover's for losers, powers

1:18:17

are for winners. I love

1:18:19

it. Gotta be one of the coolest things about

1:18:21

Game Pass, is that you can just like

1:18:23

go, I don't remember this game,

1:18:25

I'm gonna reinstall it. It's just so great

1:18:27

that it's there, available, and

1:18:30

you got the chance to play it both

1:18:32

on PC and console, because why not? That's

1:18:34

cool. I think that's pretty cool. I

1:18:36

think it's so important about when and

1:18:39

how you play games. Yeah, for sure.

1:18:41

Because I remember playing Quantum

1:18:43

Break years after it came out, and

1:18:45

I did it for extra life, actually one year.

1:18:48

Like I was like, oh, I'm gonna play this

1:18:50

whole thing through, and I remember really enjoying it.

1:18:53

And then too, when you bring up the Steam Deck,

1:18:55

I found that there's things on Steam Deck that I

1:18:57

love to play that I would never wanna sit down

1:18:59

and put my computer in play. And so I think

1:19:01

that there's such, you bring up a good

1:19:03

point, especially with Jeff not liking either

1:19:05

of the games that you're playing. I

1:19:08

could see though, I could see like

1:19:10

El Paso Elsewhere being an amazing Steam

1:19:12

Deck game, but maybe not a great

1:19:14

PS5 sitting down, got all your power,

1:19:17

your Xbox Series X game. You know

1:19:19

what I'm saying? Because then you do

1:19:21

feel like, man, this thing's coming

1:19:23

up a little short on the graphics, but on the

1:19:25

Steam Deck, in your bed, you're like, yeah, this is

1:19:27

fine. And it's not draining my battery. And

1:19:29

it's telling me a terrible story. And I run four

1:19:31

levels and then put it to sleep and come back

1:19:33

and it's not, I did 20 levels of the same

1:19:35

thing. It's just a perfect, that's a really good point.

1:19:37

Yeah, for sure, yeah. Very

1:19:40

cool, and it's funny to me that you

1:19:42

are skipping all the TV

1:19:45

show parts of Quantum Break. Because I

1:19:47

mean, I remember playing that originally, I think on Xbox

1:19:49

One, right? That was like the big Xbox One game,

1:19:52

because Xbox One, the whole

1:19:54

gimmick behind the One was that it was gonna be

1:19:56

your input one. Yeah.

1:20:00

It was your one input, right?

1:20:02

You put, you, it had

1:20:04

passed through for all your cable. And so

1:20:06

it was like this integrated, like it's part

1:20:08

TV, part video game system. And this was

1:20:11

the game that was also part TV, part

1:20:13

video game. And so I

1:20:16

suspect a lot of that colored my reaction to

1:20:18

it at the time too, was that the TV

1:20:20

show stuff, I didn't

1:20:22

think landed very well, and perhaps soured

1:20:25

my experience, you know, maybe I deserve to give

1:20:27

the herb, it deserves me to give it a

1:20:29

second chance the way you have. But boy,

1:20:32

I just remember really being disappointed with quantum

1:20:34

break. I meet I think people will pull

1:20:36

the episode, I think both of us were

1:20:38

and I was probably like, it's fine. But

1:20:40

I don't know, it's not hitting. And now

1:20:42

it's it's slaps nonstop. But it's also before

1:20:44

you had fallen madly, deeply in love with

1:20:46

remedy. Well, it wasn't it wasn't

1:20:49

because I was deeply in love with remedy

1:20:51

Max Payne Max Payne two. And then

1:20:53

I was like, and Alan Wake one. And

1:20:56

then I was like, Ooh, quantum break. Here we go.

1:20:58

Let's uh, okay, well, nope, this isn't good. I

1:21:01

feel like control is where your love

1:21:03

affair really blossoms, where you

1:21:05

consummated it to speak. Look,

1:21:08

the bells issue was post

1:21:10

control. You're right. Yeah. Fair

1:21:15

enough. All right, so let's, let's quantum break is available

1:21:17

on game pass. And yeah,

1:21:19

maybe it deserves a second look. Most

1:21:22

of the gaming, like I said, I've been traveling a lot, but

1:21:24

I did. I did

1:21:26

play some VR stuff. So let's get

1:21:28

into that. So

1:21:39

the big release this week, uh,

1:21:42

on Mediquest three was a,

1:21:45

an authentic steam link app

1:21:47

valve put out an app

1:21:50

for Mediquest three that allows you

1:21:52

to play steam VR games on

1:21:55

Mediquest three streaming them from

1:21:57

your PC as long as you have

1:22:01

You're on the same Wi-Fi network. Hallelujah.

1:22:03

Hallelujah is right.

1:22:06

Hallelujah. Right. And

1:22:09

I believe with this release,

1:22:13

the MediQuest 3 is

1:22:16

the best VR headsets

1:22:19

on the market. I can hear it. I can

1:22:21

hear it. It is

1:22:23

– I mean, it's a bummer that

1:22:25

there are VR games that

1:22:28

are exclusive to PSVR and

1:22:30

PSVR 2 that you

1:22:32

can't play. And I

1:22:34

think the PSVR 2 is a solid

1:22:36

headset, but I think

1:22:38

on every level

1:22:40

now, MediQuest 3

1:22:42

surpasses PSVR 2, in

1:22:45

my opinion. It is

1:22:47

not – The opinion of

1:22:49

someone who hates El Paso elsewhere. Yeah.

1:22:52

So take that as what you're talking about. I'm

1:22:56

glad I have a PSVR 2. I think it

1:22:58

is – it looks great, and there are some

1:23:01

great experiences on it that you can't

1:23:03

get anywhere else. But the library, the

1:23:06

library is lacking, and I

1:23:08

don't know how confident I am that – something

1:23:11

like Synapse that came out this year I think was one of my

1:23:13

favorite VR experiences of the year. Great

1:23:16

game. It is a great game. It can

1:23:19

only be played on that platform.

1:23:21

The Horizon VR game, great

1:23:24

game, can only be played on the

1:23:27

PSVR platform. The good version of RE4

1:23:29

coming out this week. Yeah. Yeah. I

1:23:31

suspect that there'll be a PC release,

1:23:33

but maybe not. Maybe not. Well, maybe

1:23:36

the Horizon one will too, right? Maybe?

1:23:39

That's just – Sony's playing that

1:23:41

game. It's so remarkable. Sony's playing that game a

1:23:43

little bit. Here's hoping. It's never saying never. I'm

1:23:45

going to knock on wood on that one. Here's

1:23:47

hoping. But the

1:23:50

fact that the Metacrest

1:23:52

3 now has a way

1:23:54

to air link the

1:23:57

Oculus experience, the – the

1:24:00

PC Oculus games

1:24:02

like Lona Echo, Lona Echo 2, and

1:24:05

so many others that are exclusive to

1:24:07

Oculus that require a beefier

1:24:10

computer than is in the standalone

1:24:13

headset. But you can now wirelessly,

1:24:16

easily, simply, wirelessly transmit those to

1:24:18

the headset. And now any VR

1:24:20

game that's on Steam, you can

1:24:22

do the same. I

1:24:24

installed it. It couldn't

1:24:26

have been easier. Really? Simple,

1:24:29

simple, simple. You download the free

1:24:31

Steam VR app on the headset.

1:24:36

You have Steam loaded on your PC as

1:24:38

long as the PC and the headset are

1:24:40

on the same Wi-Fi network. It says, here's

1:24:42

the code. It's a four digit code.

1:24:45

Type it into your Steam on PC.

1:24:48

Boom. We're talking to each

1:24:50

other. You're good to go. And it

1:24:52

literally loads the Steam VR

1:24:55

UI into the headset. So

1:24:57

now you're in, it

1:25:00

looks like you are in Steam VR.

1:25:02

It's that same home experience. All my

1:25:04

VR apps that I had on my

1:25:06

index are available to me to play.

1:25:09

And I started playing Half-Life Alyx

1:25:12

on my Metacrest 3. And

1:25:16

Christian, I

1:25:19

felt like I was playing the remastered edition

1:25:22

of Steam VR. Half-Life

1:25:27

Alyx. Even though that

1:25:29

doesn't exist. There's no remaster. But

1:25:34

you have like a beefier GP now? But you

1:25:36

played it wired before? Or just because no people? What

1:25:38

made it? The quality of

1:25:40

the headset. The screen

1:25:43

itself. The, yes, the quality

1:25:45

of the image in

1:25:47

the headset is so much better than the index,

1:25:49

which is still available

1:25:52

for purchase at a much higher price than the

1:25:54

Metacrest 3. The image

1:25:57

is so crisp, it has no. screen

1:26:00

door effect. I felt like I was

1:26:02

playing that game in a

1:26:05

whole new way, seeing things. It is

1:26:07

so beautiful. The frame rate was great.

1:26:09

Now, granted, I have

1:26:11

a beefy GP. I am on a beefy

1:26:14

computer and I was playing mere

1:26:18

feet from my Wi-Fi router, right? So I'm

1:26:20

not like I have not

1:26:22

tethered, right? Like they recommend you have

1:26:24

your it recommend your computer to be

1:26:26

locally plugged. My computer is Ethernet connected

1:26:29

to my router. My headset

1:26:31

obviously was not, but I wasn't terribly

1:26:33

far from my router. So

1:26:35

I'm not suggesting like if you're walking

1:26:38

in the woods trying to do this in

1:26:40

your backyard or whatever. Please don't go walking

1:26:43

in the woods, please. It's like I'm really

1:26:45

there. Whoa! You're

1:26:49

there! Why am I there? I'm going to pull

1:26:51

off a clip. Yeah. This wind feels crazy. That's

1:27:00

actually right. That

1:27:02

bear's teeth are sharp. But

1:27:06

having said all of that, I don't think

1:27:09

having the best condition, obviously the high-end computer

1:27:13

part is expensive. So, you

1:27:15

know, I recognize that that I have

1:27:17

a, you know, a good video card, all that

1:27:20

stuff. But I think achieving

1:27:22

optimal conditions is not difficult,

1:27:25

right? As long as you have a place

1:27:27

to put the headset on that's relative, has

1:27:29

good Wi-Fi connection, has a good, you know,

1:27:32

I don't think that's hard to do. You know, if you have a good Wi-Fi

1:27:35

in your house, it's going to work. And

1:27:37

the frame rate was excellent.

1:27:40

The image was beautiful and

1:27:42

crisp. Everything worked. Everything

1:27:44

just worked. And it's so cool

1:27:46

because in the menus and stuff,

1:27:49

you look down and you see the

1:27:52

MetaQuest controllers, right? Because the index controllers,

1:27:55

for example, are very different. They have the

1:27:57

squeezy grip and all, they look different. But

1:28:00

it's it's it's completely feels like

1:28:02

a native experience to the quest

1:28:06

And it it works so well

1:28:08

immediately that entire library is available

1:28:10

There's so many great games on

1:28:12

steam vr to play half-life alex

1:28:14

being one You

1:28:16

have you know an easy way to play

1:28:18

all the great oculus games that have come

1:28:20

out Like like I said lone echo lone

1:28:22

echo two are two of my very very

1:28:25

favorites It's

1:28:27

so great that this works like this

1:28:29

this headset is relatively inexpensive. I you

1:28:31

know, it's not cheap. It's 300 400

1:28:33

bucks But

1:28:36

500 bucks is it 500 bucks 500

1:28:39

bucks. You're right Thinking

1:28:42

the two the twos 400 bucks, whatever doesn't

1:28:44

matter. It's less expensive Yeah,

1:28:49

no, you're right it's not cheap, but I

1:28:52

think it is It

1:28:55

is for me the now the Premier

1:28:58

VR headset now, obviously Apple is gonna come

1:29:01

in and have something to say about that

1:29:03

But at an extraordinarily high price point, right

1:29:05

you can get seven Quest

1:29:08

threes for the price of one Apple

1:29:12

vision Pro, but I Think

1:29:15

for right now like with the pass-through with

1:29:17

the AR stuff with the way you can

1:29:21

You can play literally so many games

1:29:23

that have come out if

1:29:25

you're thinking right now about Getting

1:29:28

into VR this holiday It

1:29:31

has never been easier for me to say

1:29:33

there is one headset to rule them all

1:29:36

and it's hard because as I said

1:29:38

PS VR 2 is a strong candidate

1:29:40

I think the comfort level of the

1:29:42

quest is superior to the comfort level

1:29:45

of PS VR 2. I

1:29:47

think You

1:29:49

know the pass-through is better pass through on the PS VR 2

1:29:51

is only black and white you have color pass through on the

1:29:53

quest 3 it's just

1:29:57

Easy for me to recommend at this point and I here's

1:30:00

Go ahead. I think

1:30:02

here's my question to you. Is this

1:30:04

a mea culpa of valve and

1:30:06

saying meta run with

1:30:08

it? Or is this valve

1:30:10

saying, we got ours coming too

1:30:12

and it's going to be a standalone. So

1:30:14

we needed to make a play nice and

1:30:16

we're going to have to know they've always

1:30:19

they've wanted steam BR on everything. And so

1:30:21

that's their way of trying to open up

1:30:23

that wall, but they have was rumored to

1:30:25

be Deckard or whatever the alleged right, that'd

1:30:27

be very curious if you know valve makes

1:30:29

a steam deck headset, you know, like one

1:30:33

thing self contained out they have this

1:30:35

technology proven out in a way that

1:30:37

seems to work really, really well. Yeah,

1:30:40

I mean, as you said, the rumor is that

1:30:42

that's what they're working on. So who knows? I

1:30:45

don't I was surprised that this happened.

1:30:47

But I do like the fact that

1:30:49

these are less and less closed ecosystems,

1:30:51

right? Obviously

1:30:54

meta isn't playing nice in reverse, right?

1:30:56

You can't get Oculus games. Really, you

1:30:58

can. It's just not them doing it.

1:31:01

But you can. But

1:31:05

you know, I just

1:31:07

wish I wish there was a

1:31:09

little more back and forth with the PlayStation headset.

1:31:12

But of course, it's, you know, console mentalities are

1:31:14

you know, it's closed

1:31:16

ecosystems. I have a question. Yeah,

1:31:19

did they figure out the whole

1:31:21

one login to

1:31:23

quest two or more quests

1:31:26

with meta? Because when meta two came

1:31:28

out, there was this whole like kerfluffle where it's like,

1:31:31

if you signed in there, then something happened with the

1:31:33

original. Do they get that all figured out? Because we

1:31:35

skipped the two. And I'm

1:31:37

really thinking about getting the quest three.

1:31:40

Because my kids have fallen in love with playing

1:31:43

VR stuff. But I was like, how will will

1:31:45

that play nice? Or do they have to have

1:31:47

their own Facebook account? Can I you know, say

1:31:49

how that all work? I don't know the exact

1:31:52

answer to that. To be frank, I. I

1:31:55

suspect there is because there's a number of

1:31:57

games that have come out that are quest

1:31:59

exclusive. that allow

1:32:02

you they have this new technology

1:32:04

where the the headsets another headset

1:32:06

will see they'll

1:32:08

see each other in the same room and

1:32:10

so you can play things like Demi-O

1:32:12

battles and there's a bunch of

1:32:14

AR games where you

1:32:16

can be all standing around the same thing

1:32:19

and seeing each other and all manipulating the

1:32:21

same thing in real time it's in front

1:32:23

of you and it'll see

1:32:25

another headset in the same room

1:32:27

as you and and you know interact with it

1:32:29

Wow it's possible

1:32:32

that it still requires you to have distinct profiles

1:32:34

you know logins to do that I don't

1:32:36

know but I haven't had the opportunity to

1:32:39

try that but I hope hopefully they figured

1:32:41

it out I don't know for sure but

1:32:44

I'll tell you Christian logging into

1:32:47

Half-Life Alex again and

1:32:50

seeing it like with fresh eyes it's

1:32:55

so much a bummer to me that

1:32:57

this tech hasn't taken off because that's

1:33:00

what's possible and it's been possible we

1:33:02

could still be doing that and

1:33:04

it's so beautiful

1:33:08

it's so beautiful in the quest 3

1:33:11

it's more I mean I spent

1:33:13

so much money on the index it was the

1:33:15

top of the line at the time and I

1:33:17

had that incredible experience playing that game but

1:33:20

now it looks so much worse

1:33:22

than what's capable it's so crisp

1:33:25

it's so the image is so

1:33:27

sharp ah it

1:33:29

feels like I'm playing a whole new game again and

1:33:31

I was like I want to play all through this

1:33:33

and I'm not tethered anymore you know I'm I'm spinning

1:33:35

around I'm fighting bad guys and doing all kinds of

1:33:37

stuff and I don't have to worry about the cord

1:33:39

anymore which is so nice it's it's

1:33:42

really great yeah

1:33:44

that's cool that is that is very cool and

1:33:47

you know I was so high last week I was talking about

1:33:49

I was so high on Assassin's

1:33:51

Creed Nexus VR which I still

1:33:53

think is excellent and but like

1:33:55

I know

1:33:58

that meta and the

1:34:00

developers that they've acquired,

1:34:05

their mandate is to create standalone experiences.

1:34:07

And so they're sort of limited by

1:34:09

the standalone capabilities of the headset. But

1:34:11

like, why? Why? Let

1:34:16

there be these powered

1:34:18

experiences that just

1:34:20

seamlessly, wirelessly stream.

1:34:23

I understand their

1:34:25

selling point is, hey, buy this, you don't even need

1:34:27

a computer, just buy it, and now you can play

1:34:29

all these things. And I think

1:34:32

that's compelling, but it's

1:34:34

holding back the level

1:34:36

of verisimilitude. You

1:34:41

know, the level of, it looks like real, it

1:34:43

looks beautiful and realistic

1:34:45

and awesome in the headset. I

1:34:48

think Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, great. But

1:34:53

compared to Half-Life,

1:34:56

Alex streamed, it's

1:34:59

not comparable. You know, it's like, you're

1:35:03

saying what we kind of talked about for a while, this

1:35:05

is why we are peanut butter and

1:35:08

chocolate, Jeff, shaking hands, is you are

1:35:10

VR and I am cloud gaming. And

1:35:12

that is the unison. It's

1:35:14

like when GeForce Now works on

1:35:17

a Metacrest 3 or something like that,

1:35:19

and the latency and all that stuff. Because then it

1:35:21

is, it's that one shot, you got everything

1:35:23

you need. And I think we're getting closer and

1:35:25

closer to that. I mean, we're kind of, like,

1:35:27

that's it. I mean, we're

1:35:29

not there in the sense that it's still being computed

1:35:32

on my PC and not from the

1:35:34

cloud, but it's proving to

1:35:36

me, it's

1:35:39

making me eat my words a bit when I was like,

1:35:41

oh, I'm really glad the PSVR2 is wired because

1:35:44

I want all the, it's like, no, Sony

1:35:47

could have just wirelessly

1:35:49

streamed PS5 stuff to

1:35:52

my headset. What would they call

1:35:54

it? The PSVR2 portal? I'll never make that. Ha

1:35:56

ha ha. Anyway, we got

1:35:59

a listener. Question about VR that I

1:36:01

wanted to read this comes from Paul who wrote this

1:36:03

to DLC [email protected] Paul

1:36:05

said I have a

1:36:07

ps4 and psvr no ps5

1:36:10

psvr 2 is expensive It

1:36:12

has occurred to me just to get the latest

1:36:15

meta thing oculus quest 3 and

1:36:17

skip the psvr 2 version because the latter would

1:36:19

Be like two thousand dollars or something

1:36:21

and that's hard to justify at my advanced age I

1:36:25

found that gaming in VR doesn't engage

1:36:27

me But I really enjoy it for

1:36:29

other more casual activities and it seems

1:36:31

like there are more non gaming VR

1:36:33

Alternatives on platforms other than PlayStation. For

1:36:36

example, I think a Google Earth in

1:36:38

VR is available and not on PlayStation

1:36:40

That's correct. Paul. Do you have

1:36:42

thoughts recommendations on this? Maybe a non gaming VR?

1:36:46

Could be an interesting topic for VR talk I

1:36:49

realize it's kind of outside the purview of the show, but

1:36:51

game is a broad term these days for all kinds of

1:36:53

interactive media So maybe it works. I

1:36:55

will say just briefly to answer your question that

1:36:59

yes Steam VR

1:37:01

as you might expect has many

1:37:03

more of these kinds of experiences

1:37:06

Than PlayStation does right PlayStation is

1:37:08

a PlayStation and they

1:37:10

are much more curated in what is available and

1:37:14

PS and Steam and

1:37:17

for that matter just the native Oculus

1:37:19

Quest Store or the meta quest

1:37:21

store has a lot of productivity

1:37:24

apps You can watch

1:37:26

for example, one of my favorite things to do in

1:37:28

the quest 3 Which

1:37:31

I never enjoyed on previous versions of the

1:37:33

headsets because the image was not crisp enough

1:37:36

But one of my favorite things to do is watch 3d

1:37:38

movies, which I know a lot

1:37:41

of people have distaste for but I still love 3d

1:37:43

movies and You

1:37:45

can watch like you can watch trailers for

1:37:48

3d movies on Metaquest

1:37:50

3 and it looks so good.

1:37:52

They look so Good.

1:37:55

It's like you're in a giant movie theater

1:37:57

and you're watching 3d trailers for type-c Titanic

1:38:00

and you know Life

1:38:03

of pie and all these great movies And

1:38:06

it's the best version of 3d the

1:38:08

idea that you probably have in your head of

1:38:11

sitting in a movie theater Wearing

1:38:14

flimsy glasses that 400 people wore

1:38:16

before you and were wiped off

1:38:19

Barely by the intendants before they were thrown in

1:38:22

a big tub And then you put on your

1:38:24

face and it looks kind of crappy and it's

1:38:26

low light and it that is

1:38:28

not the experience the experience inside a

1:38:31

Virtual reality headset is the

1:38:33

best 3d movie viewing experience

1:38:36

on the planet and it is

1:38:38

so Infuriating to me that

1:38:40

PlayStation VR 2 does

1:38:42

not support 3d

1:38:45

blu-ray viewing because PlayStation VR

1:38:47

1 did and it would

1:38:49

probably look so much better on PS VR

1:38:51

2 But they don't support it anymore You

1:38:53

should be able to just pop your old

1:38:55

3d blu-rays in there and watch a 3d

1:38:57

movie, but you can't but you can Watch

1:39:00

3d movies on Quest 3 obviously can't watch

1:39:02

blu-rays, but they have apps that let you

1:39:05

do that You can purchase 3d movies and

1:39:07

watch them So

1:39:09

anyway, that's one thing but there's all good. Yeah,

1:39:11

Google Earth and VR is stunning and amazing I've

1:39:14

talked before I think on this show about

1:39:17

the piano Vision app on

1:39:20

meta quest 3 that uses AR to teach

1:39:22

you piano like a real piano You have

1:39:24

a real piano in your house or a

1:39:26

keyboard It'll teach it to

1:39:28

you like it's guitar hero lots of

1:39:30

really cool stuff like that. There's all kinds

1:39:33

of productivity apps and painting

1:39:35

and drawing and

1:39:38

CAD and Visual modeling

1:39:40

and stuff like that all

1:39:42

kinds of stuff like that on Steam VR. So

1:39:45

yeah, I would recommend Like

1:39:48

I said, I've gotten to this place now where I used

1:39:50

to equivocate and be like, I don't know which one I

1:39:52

would recommend It's meta quest

1:39:54

3 right now today this holiday season.

1:39:57

It's the easiest thing to recommend as far

1:39:59

as getting into VR. Wow.

1:40:03

You're tilting me. Cause

1:40:05

I was like, I've been on

1:40:07

the fence. You know, we've got the first

1:40:09

one and it's, one

1:40:11

of the reasons I love it is because my

1:40:13

kids have fallen in love with Star Wars because

1:40:15

of Vader and mortal. And so they played through

1:40:18

those episodes and they absolutely love it. And

1:40:20

then, you know, I had some buddies that like every

1:40:22

Tuesday night get together in VR game together. And

1:40:25

they were like, hey, so you got to download this steam thing

1:40:27

and then blah, blah, blah, and then plug it into the side

1:40:29

and blah, blah, blah. And I was like, man,

1:40:32

that is clunky. I don't feel like doing

1:40:34

that. And then hearing this,

1:40:36

you're like, oh shoot. And I've got

1:40:38

like a mesh system at my house.

1:40:40

And so I think that even if I was

1:40:43

inside the house, I could still probably run some

1:40:45

things off of Steam VR just because of how

1:40:47

the mesh, you know, energy works. That so maybe

1:40:49

my kids could still enjoy some of those things

1:40:51

like shoot, AR piano playing is,

1:40:54

that sounds incredible. Yeah, I

1:40:56

put my seven year old in the

1:40:58

headset and in like a

1:41:00

minute and a half, he was playing, I

1:41:02

mean, you know, not perfectly, but he was

1:41:04

playing happy birthday on the piano. We

1:41:07

have like a man, we have a little, like

1:41:09

a little keyboard, a little MIDI keyboard. And

1:41:12

he was playing it for everybody wearing the headset.

1:41:14

Just like he'd never played it before, anything like

1:41:16

that before. Wow. But because it

1:41:18

shows you, you know, where to put your fingers on the thing,

1:41:21

really slick. And it felt like the future,

1:41:24

you know? So I

1:41:26

recommend it. Hard

1:41:28

to recommend Facebook stuff, but I

1:41:31

feel like they've, they really did

1:41:33

it. Not anymore. The biggest gift they

1:41:36

ever got was Twitter becoming X. Everybody's

1:41:38

like Mark, Mark, Mark. Yeah, right? I'll

1:41:40

throw Mark again now. I miss Tom.

1:41:44

Right? Tom's just living his life. He's

1:41:46

so happy right now. I hope

1:41:48

so. Watching the world burn. And

1:41:52

it's called, like, I don't need to

1:41:54

belabor the point, but it's comfortable. Like I don't even have

1:41:56

the fancy, they sell you a fancy strap. I don't have

1:41:58

it. I have the regular strap. It's so comfortable. It's

1:42:00

so light. All right.

1:42:03

Let's wrap the show up. We is there.

1:42:06

It's been a fun one. It's been a

1:42:08

super fun one. And thank you,

1:42:10

Gabe Patello, for being here. You're awesome. We

1:42:12

appreciate hanging out with you and talking game

1:42:15

honored to be here. Seriously.

1:42:17

Thank honored. It's our honor

1:42:19

to have you. Can you tell folks where they can keep up

1:42:21

with you and all the cool stuff that you do? Yeah,

1:42:24

man. We're over at the Married to the

1:42:26

Games podcast like you guys. Well, we just

1:42:28

turned 11. Hey, you

1:42:30

guys are you guys are about to turn 10.

1:42:32

So congratulations on that. That it's hard to do.

1:42:35

It's hard to keep going. A lot of podcasts

1:42:37

have come and gone. That's right. In years. So

1:42:39

congratulations to you guys. Hats off. And I know

1:42:41

you guys are you guys are pumping out a

1:42:43

lot of content. Yeah.

1:42:45

Married to the Games, you find

1:42:47

the MCTG cast on x.com. And

1:42:51

yeah, I'm at Gabe Patello. You can

1:42:53

come see the little things I'm

1:42:55

getting into. Whether it's voiceover or, you know,

1:42:57

we just got back from doing the Macy's

1:42:59

Day parade in New York,

1:43:02

which was really fun over Thanksgiving. So,

1:43:04

yeah, man, we're we're all over the place.

1:43:06

We're finally if you Google Married to the

1:43:09

Games, we're finally the first thing that

1:43:11

popped up. There used

1:43:13

to be a show called Married to the

1:43:15

Game, which was about a rapper

1:43:17

and his wife, the

1:43:19

game, the rapper. Right. And

1:43:21

so we've overtaken that finally because I think

1:43:23

that's been off. You know

1:43:25

what you do? That's what longevity gets you. You

1:43:28

know, you stick around long enough. Exactly. Everybody else

1:43:30

falls to the wayside. So just Google Married to

1:43:32

the Games. We're right there. We're about to head

1:43:34

out to it's kind of what you

1:43:36

talked about, about stuff happening after you record. So

1:43:39

Tuesday, we'll record our show for this week and

1:43:41

then Wednesday head out to the Game Awards. But

1:43:43

our show won't come out till Friday, so I

1:43:45

have to do a bonus episode because the thing

1:43:47

is on Thursday. And so we're

1:43:49

really excited to be out at the Game Awards this year. All

1:43:52

four of us will be out there. So it'll be really fun.

1:43:55

So, yeah, man, come come follow along. We're we're just

1:43:57

some regular old dudes talking

1:43:59

gaming. Love it. Well, have a great time

1:44:01

and thank you. How did Jeff for us? I

1:44:05

won't leak anything. I'm

1:44:07

scared to say hi to him too loud. Cause I mean, I

1:44:09

heard security is going to be off the chain this year. You're

1:44:12

not on the front of that stage in any

1:44:14

way. I'll be yelled from my seat. Like, yeah,

1:44:16

I'm good. I'm

1:44:20

good. Hey, don't take me bro. Don't get it. Uh,

1:44:24

fantastic Christian Spicer. What about you? What do you

1:44:26

got going on this week? Well,

1:44:28

it's already out. But I'll shout it out

1:44:30

again. I think that Alan wake to spoiler

1:44:33

chat that Felipe Osher, Alex Sollman and I

1:44:35

did was excellent. Uh, almost immediately after finishing

1:44:37

it, we were all discording each other, being

1:44:40

like, no, there's so much more we could

1:44:42

say. Should we jump back on and record

1:44:44

more? We think we're going to wait until

1:44:46

the expansions come out. So look for more

1:44:49

Alan wake to content, uh,

1:44:51

as that content comes into the world.

1:44:54

Um, but that is available for all patrons now, any

1:44:56

level to go check out again. The spoiler, full

1:44:59

spoiler. I think the first words out of Felipe's mouth

1:45:01

are like the last words of the game. Spoilers

1:45:05

right away. Spoilers. I

1:45:07

say like, Hey, this is a spoiler chat. And

1:45:09

then Felipe is like Darth Vader's the dad, you

1:45:12

know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The end. Um,

1:45:14

really awesome conversation though. So I hope folks

1:45:17

enjoy that. Check it out. If they haven't,

1:45:19

this show is on threads

1:45:21

and on Instagram as DLC

1:45:24

hype train. And

1:45:26

we're also on YouTube at DLC

1:45:28

pod. And then my

1:45:30

newsletter, it's a twice a month,

1:45:32

a newsletter called let's chat games

1:45:34

that used to be on tiny

1:45:37

letter is no longer on tiny letter

1:45:39

because tiny letter is going away. It

1:45:41

is that thing that things that

1:45:43

happens with things on the internet company

1:45:45

buys thing says it's not going

1:45:48

to change thing and then

1:45:50

kills thing two days later. We

1:45:52

respect thing. That's why we bought it. We're

1:45:54

going to keep it the same. You're all

1:45:56

fired thing is going away. Um,

1:45:58

so it is that sub staff. now,

1:46:00

christianspeiser.com, or christianspeiser.substack.com,

1:46:02

whatever the Substack URL is that I haven't

1:46:05

even fully learned yet. But it's on Substack,

1:46:07

you can get it there, you can

1:46:09

subscribe, I would appreciate that. And the first

1:46:11

one on Substack went out

1:46:13

last Friday, and it

1:46:16

was inspired by a conversation we had

1:46:18

on this show, Jeff, on episode 523,

1:46:21

about what we could see the next

1:46:23

Uncharted game being. And I kind

1:46:25

of took that and ran with it, of this idea of,

1:46:28

is a franchise married to its

1:46:30

character? And how can franchises exist

1:46:32

apart from their star? Because

1:46:35

more often than not, they don't. And I

1:46:37

think there's a world where they can. And

1:46:39

so that's what the most recent newsletter was

1:46:42

about. Again, it is on Substack, Christian Spicer.

1:46:44

Hope folks check it out. Very

1:46:47

cool. You can follow me on

1:46:49

socials. I'm at Jeff Canata, which is spelled with

1:46:51

two N's and one T. I

1:46:53

want to tell you about my

1:46:56

Amazon storefront, which a

1:46:58

lot of people have been commenting to me

1:47:00

on. I put

1:47:02

together a bunch of my favorite stuff, because

1:47:05

around this time of year, people are always

1:47:07

asking me for ideas. People

1:47:09

are asking me for board game recommendations and all

1:47:11

kinds of ideas. I

1:47:14

thought, and to be honest,

1:47:16

when I say I, I mean my wife insisted, that

1:47:18

I would let people

1:47:21

know the things that have been

1:47:23

part of my world, part of the things

1:47:25

that I have enjoyed. These are,

1:47:27

it's a very curated set of lists. And

1:47:30

they have a whole bunch of topics. There's board games.

1:47:32

There's stuff that my kids love. My

1:47:34

daughter has sensory issues

1:47:36

and special needs, and there's stuff that's worked for

1:47:39

her. So there's all kinds

1:47:41

of cool topics, household items, things I can't

1:47:43

live without, like my favorite hot

1:47:45

sauce and my favorite barbecue sauce are

1:47:47

on there. You know, the essentials. That's

1:47:50

right. So check it out. amazon.com/

1:47:53

store slash Jeff Kanata is

1:47:56

where you go to find the,

1:47:59

maybe some gift ideas for the people in your

1:48:01

life are just ways to improve your life. I get

1:48:03

a little commission if you buy it through that so

1:48:05

I would appreciate it if you checked it out. You

1:48:09

can also check out other shows I do. The film cast

1:48:11

is about movies and TV shows. We Have

1:48:14

Concerns is about science and it's

1:48:16

a jokey jokey show. And I

1:48:18

do a sports show called the

1:48:20

fan controlled show. It's on fan

1:48:22

controlled sports and entertainment. All

1:48:24

that stuff available where you get fine podcasts.

1:48:27

All right let's wrap the show up now with

1:48:30

our parting gifts. Gabe

1:48:43

do you have a suggestion to help people get through their

1:48:45

week? Yeah

1:48:47

I would say

1:48:50

encourage those around you to start Amazon

1:48:53

wish lists because it is

1:48:55

the season for gift giving

1:48:58

and we all love knocking it out of

1:49:00

the park and a lot of us miss a

1:49:03

lot of the time. So I'm

1:49:06

speaking from experience and so I

1:49:08

would say man encourage your friends and family

1:49:10

especially your loved ones maybe a

1:49:12

partner say hey let

1:49:14

me show you this thing called Amazon wish list put

1:49:17

what you want on here and we'll try to

1:49:19

get it for you because I think there's nothing better

1:49:21

than opening a gift you want. Yeah

1:49:24

yes I love that. I am

1:49:26

so bad at doing that. My family gets so mad at

1:49:28

me they're like what do you want I'm like I don't

1:49:31

know when you're a grown man you're like I've

1:49:33

bought it throughout the year the thing I wanted.

1:49:35

They're like well what should we get you and

1:49:37

then you end up with socks and then you're

1:49:40

kind of mad that you got socks and wish

1:49:42

you would've got something else but you didn't tell

1:49:44

them anything. Right. So don't get socks. Don't get

1:49:46

socks for your loved ones. Find out what they

1:49:48

want on their Amazon wish list. That's great. Love

1:49:50

it. Christian Spicer your parting

1:49:53

gift. I love

1:49:55

socks. I'm gonna go out and

1:49:57

say. Christian wish list is

1:49:59

just socks. all the way down. Strap socks, patterned

1:50:01

socks. I love a good sock. My

1:50:04

wife got me a custom sock that had our dog's face

1:50:06

on it. They're great. Buddy and mine

1:50:08

got me Joshua Tree socks. They're great. I

1:50:11

love a good sock. I love a nice wool sock for the

1:50:13

cold. I get cold tutsies. I love a good sock. But I

1:50:15

also gave – I love a list.

1:50:18

I love – yes, please, please,

1:50:20

dear listener, make a list and

1:50:24

be okay as the purchaser buying something

1:50:26

off said list. I

1:50:29

know enough adult friends are like, well, I don't want to

1:50:31

get my partner something that's on their list. No,

1:50:33

no, no, no, no. That's why it's on the list. That's why. Because

1:50:37

you don't want to get them exactly what they want.

1:50:39

Yeah. Well, they're expecting that.

1:50:42

They're hoping for it. Like, don't reinvent the wheel.

1:50:44

Don't make it harder than it needs to be.

1:50:47

This is also gift related and this may

1:50:49

or may not be on your loved ones

1:50:51

or friends list. But a great gift idea,

1:50:54

I think, it does not have to

1:50:56

be expensive and it supports an industry I

1:50:58

love in a local shop, likely in your

1:51:00

neighborhood. Go to your local comic book shop

1:51:03

and go into the back catalog

1:51:06

and just get a grip

1:51:08

of back catalog old comics.

1:51:10

I'm not talking Black Cat's

1:51:12

first appearance. I'm not

1:51:14

talking Wolverine number one. I'm talking

1:51:17

X-Force 47 through 56. You

1:51:21

know, just like a random – they're

1:51:23

cheap. They don't need to be a

1:51:25

grade 10. Just this

1:51:27

really cool run, a random

1:51:30

stack of a couple of issues of

1:51:32

old comics and give them to them

1:51:34

in a way that lets them know these are meant to be

1:51:36

read, flipped through, devoured, don't even

1:51:38

have them bored and bagged. I think it's

1:51:40

a really cool, tangible thing that it lets

1:51:43

people experience that art and that medium in

1:51:45

a really cool way and supports your

1:51:47

local shop. So go find random old back

1:51:49

catalog comics Hulk

1:51:51

281. I don't know.

1:51:54

I love it. It's a great issue. When

1:51:56

I was a kid, I don't know where they

1:51:58

got this from because the – The internet didn't

1:52:00

exist. It was all mail order. Some

1:52:04

company did a thing where they

1:52:06

would send you a brown box full

1:52:10

of like 50 random loose

1:52:14

comic issues. I

1:52:16

would get that as a gift usually during

1:52:18

Christmas from a family because I was

1:52:20

so into comics. My family, I have

1:52:22

some aunt or something that didn't know anything about comics and

1:52:25

she just ordered this big box. It was amazing because 30%

1:52:27

of it was absolute garbage. I

1:52:31

don't want to read this at all. But

1:52:34

70% of it would be like, that's cool. That's some

1:52:36

interesting stuff. It would be this wild

1:52:39

grab bag of just somebody in some store

1:52:41

just shoved a pile of comics into a

1:52:43

box and sent it off. That

1:52:46

needs to be re-brought back with

1:52:48

comics and vinyl. Can you imagine

1:52:50

getting like five random vinyl and

1:52:52

five random comics? Your

1:52:55

local shop will do it, Gabe, I guarantee you because

1:52:57

my local shops, they do those grab bags. Around the

1:52:59

holidays, that's a great idea too. You can go in

1:53:01

and ask like, hey, I'm looking for a $10 grab

1:53:04

bag of that catalog and maybe one

1:53:06

current. They'll put it together for you.

1:53:08

It's awesome. Yeah, one might be

1:53:11

something you're not into. You can give them an

1:53:13

age range. We're not in

1:53:15

the era of high fidelity anymore where

1:53:17

you don't think of these shops

1:53:19

as unapproachable. They really want to

1:53:21

help and are a wealth of

1:53:23

knowledge. I think it's a really

1:53:25

cool physical tangible thing that you can get that's

1:53:27

not a roblox gift card. My

1:53:35

parting gift is, as

1:53:38

I mentioned, I've been traveling a lot lately, the

1:53:40

last few weeks. We're trying to get to all

1:53:42

the various arms of the family in and

1:53:45

around the holidays. It's

1:53:47

hard to go on the holidays. We're actually going

1:53:49

to be home, just us, for

1:53:52

actual Christmas. We're

1:53:55

trying to visit ... Both

1:53:57

of my wife and I come from divorced.

1:54:00

parents. So it's like, you know, order

1:54:02

of magnitude more people to see. Anyway,

1:54:05

so we're traveling a lot and bringing the

1:54:07

kids with us. And we have

1:54:09

over the last couple of weeks, had

1:54:12

an opportunity to try to find

1:54:14

activities for the kids in these

1:54:16

various locations. And it just

1:54:18

so happens that we took them to a

1:54:21

couple of putt putt golf

1:54:23

courses. All right, now. But

1:54:26

not just any putt. This is not

1:54:28

your dad's putt putt. And by your

1:54:30

dad, I mean, me being like, yeah,

1:54:32

our yeah, we are the dad. Yeah,

1:54:35

this, you know, we grew up putt

1:54:37

putt meant you were outside, it

1:54:40

was a loop de loop or

1:54:42

a windmill or a clown's face

1:54:44

or something. And it was

1:54:46

invariably a kind of rundown and destroyed by

1:54:49

the weather and the fact that they were

1:54:51

built rundown. Yeah, you're right. They started when

1:54:53

they were brand new, they were rundown. That's

1:54:55

right. It's like when Morgan Freeman was born,

1:54:58

like he was born old. He was born

1:55:00

old. Already with age on him, Benjamin Button.

1:55:02

He was Benjamin Button of golf courses. Yes.

1:55:06

That's not the way things are anymore. I

1:55:09

want to tell you about a couple of places, two

1:55:11

different places on two different weekends that

1:55:13

we went to. Both of them blew

1:55:15

my mind. And maybe folks have heard

1:55:17

of these. I had not. The first I

1:55:20

want to say about is called Pop Stroke, which

1:55:22

is Tiger Woods's like

1:55:25

high end, cool kids,

1:55:27

like almost made for

1:55:29

adults. Putt putt, where

1:55:31

it's putt putt in that

1:55:34

it's you know, little just putting into the

1:55:36

hole, but it's made to look like a

1:55:38

professional golf course, but it's still putt

1:55:40

putt. So there's like fake sand

1:55:43

traps, but they're still just, you know, astroturf,

1:55:46

but they made to look like sand traps.

1:55:49

It's cool. And there's like a bar in the

1:55:51

middle of the course and you can get drinks

1:55:53

sent to you on anywhere you are. And there's

1:55:55

ice cream stands and it's super cool. We

1:55:58

did this in Phoenix. I

1:56:00

think it was actually Glendale, Arizona when I was visiting

1:56:02

my mother-in-law. But there's a number

1:56:05

of locations all around the world. In

1:56:08

Florida and a

1:56:11

number of them in Arizona and

1:56:13

Texas. Anyway, cool spot. I

1:56:16

was blown away by a pop show. I thought

1:56:18

it was super cool. But not

1:56:20

even as much as the other place I

1:56:22

went, which is called

1:56:24

Putt Shack. This is another

1:56:26

chain. It has not reached

1:56:29

the west coast. The farthest west Putt

1:56:31

Shack goes is Arizona as well. But

1:56:33

there is one here in Denver where

1:56:35

I went. There's a bunch on

1:56:37

the east coast in Atlanta

1:56:40

and Nashville and Philly and

1:56:42

Washington and up

1:56:45

into, I don't even know, there's

1:56:47

a couple in Chicago, Minneapolis. Anyway, Putt Shack.

1:56:50

This is genius. It's high-tech

1:56:58

Putt-Putt. It's Putt mini golf,

1:57:00

miniature golf mixed with

1:57:03

super high-tech video game technology.

1:57:06

It looks like a mix between Putt-Putt

1:57:09

and Dave and Busters. Yeah, but

1:57:12

even higher end than Dave and Busters. But

1:57:15

you get a ball and it's got

1:57:17

a tracking device in it and whatever

1:57:20

RF technology it's got. All

1:57:24

your strokes are tracked by

1:57:26

the technology in the

1:57:29

hole. All the holes are

1:57:31

wild and in that same vein

1:57:33

of loop-de-loops and crazy stuff. But

1:57:35

it's all indoors and

1:57:37

it's all super high-tech so it can

1:57:39

have these video game inspired.

1:57:41

It's like what happened when slot

1:57:45

machines went to video slot machines where it's

1:57:47

like, we

1:57:50

don't have to just do mechanical stuff. We

1:57:52

can do all kinds of virtual stuff and

1:57:54

that's what's happening with this miniature golf where

1:57:56

it's, it'll be like you hit, you,

1:57:58

you, you hit the

1:58:00

ball and then it'll have like a trivia

1:58:02

come up on these video screens and

1:58:05

it'll be like a A or B trivia.

1:58:07

And depending on which A

1:58:09

or B you think the answer is,

1:58:12

you hit your ball into a different

1:58:14

hole. So you get like

1:58:16

bonus points if you hit into

1:58:18

the right hole, but it's also tracking your

1:58:20

shots or there'll be, you know, these wild

1:58:23

video things where it'll like be a bonus

1:58:26

at a certain time because this thing is spinning

1:58:28

around and lighting up. Anyway, I'm doing a terrible

1:58:30

job describing it, but it blew me away. It

1:58:33

was super fun and

1:58:35

we had a great time and it

1:58:37

really completely changed my view

1:58:39

of what miniature golf is, which I

1:58:41

already thought was fun, but it like took it

1:58:43

into the stratosphere and made it way

1:58:46

cooler. So putt shack and

1:58:48

pop stroke are two recommendations for me.

1:58:50

Looking at putt shack, it's like still

1:58:52

a physical golf course. It's not like

1:58:54

a virtual course, but then as it

1:58:56

goes into a hole, it'll trigger a

1:58:59

light or a reaction. So it's not

1:59:01

like a virtual green, like you're still

1:59:03

in a physical space interacting with things.

1:59:06

But it also, it knows how many times

1:59:08

you've hit the ball. So it'll... Yeah, so how do I

1:59:10

win then? What? I

1:59:13

don't like, how do I win? You

1:59:15

can't cheat. That's the problem. That's what I'm saying. I always

1:59:17

kind of nudge it in and dad always wins. Like I

1:59:19

want, I want like the old pick and drop. That's what

1:59:21

I need. Now you just have to like, just

1:59:23

completely check your kid out of the way. Just slam

1:59:26

them out of the way when they're trying to... Hit their

1:59:28

ball a few more times. Sorry. Yeah.

1:59:32

It's so clever and so fun. All

1:59:35

right. We also got a listener

1:59:37

suggested parting gift. This comes to

1:59:39

us from Andrew. He wrote in

1:59:41

to [email protected]. Andrew writes, hey,

1:59:43

I'd like to recommend Mall Night

1:59:45

Long. It's an

1:59:48

over Zoom game show experience.

1:59:51

If you're a fan of game shows,

1:59:53

host Chris Machad, I hope I'm pronouncing

1:59:55

that correctly, puts on a great

1:59:57

two hour experience for you and a group of friends.

2:00:00

friends. You'll be separated into two teams and

2:00:02

compete at various times for fabulous prizes and

2:00:04

money. There are no prizes and money, but

2:00:06

you'll totally feel like you're on stage trying

2:00:08

to win. We recently did this to celebrate

2:00:11

my wife's birthday and had a blast. If

2:00:13

you're looking for a little, something a little

2:00:15

out of the ordinary to try, I highly

2:00:17

recommend the experience. You can learn more at

2:00:20

facebook.com/mall night long or by emailing

2:00:23

play mall night [email protected]. So

2:00:26

I checked this out because I wasn't sure what

2:00:28

it was. It's literally, you

2:00:32

organize a zoom call with this dude

2:00:35

who runs a game show for

2:00:37

you. It's bespoke, like live. He gets

2:00:39

on and runs the game show

2:00:41

for you. Like from, so you, are you

2:00:43

at home or are you at a mall? Because here's the thing,

2:00:45

I love a mall. It's a, what is

2:00:47

it called? Mall night long. I'm, I'm expected to

2:00:49

be in a mall, but you're at home. I

2:00:51

believe you're at home. You're just on your computer

2:00:53

and you're made to feel like you're in a

2:00:56

mall. That's my understanding. And it's, you pay this

2:00:58

person and they have, they create a

2:01:00

game show for you, like just for you

2:01:02

and your friends. I thought it was more

2:01:04

like a, you know, uh, um,

2:01:06

you don't know jack type of situation, you

2:01:08

know? Yeah. But it's not, it's literally

2:01:11

more HQ trivia than it is. No, this

2:01:13

is like a dude who gets on just

2:01:15

with you. And that's pretty amazing. So I've

2:01:17

never heard of it. Yeah. There

2:01:19

you go. So facebook.com/mall night

2:01:21

long. Very funny. If

2:01:24

you'd like to have your parting gift read on our show, send

2:01:27

it in to dlcfeedbackatgmail.com. We

2:01:29

love getting those from folks.

2:01:32

All right. That's it for this

2:01:34

episode of DLC. Thanks again to Gabe

2:01:37

Petillo and Christian Spicer for hanging out with

2:01:39

me. Thanks to our musical contributors, Patrick L,

2:01:41

Sean Madigan and Zero Star for those

2:01:43

fun bumpers. Our theme song was

2:01:45

composed by white cube, which is

2:01:47

Jason Sherry and T Ryan Arnold.

2:01:50

Also, uh, you

2:01:53

can get swag for the show at

2:01:55

2:01:57

J Anderson. Our

2:01:59

biggest thanks. Our reserve for our patrons

2:02:01

2:02:05

We appreciate you very very much our top

2:02:07

tier patrons our hype train patrons get

2:02:10

a video game made for them And

2:02:13

Christian I are gonna do that right now Hey

2:02:16

Christian, it's time to talk about

2:02:19

some some games that

2:02:21

really Have been overlooked for

2:02:23

too long. I would say You

2:02:27

recall Michael Buck

2:02:29

I I

2:02:31

know you know about the Big

2:02:35

buck game hunting hunting

2:02:37

games, but do you know about the Michael

2:02:39

Buck game? I'm

2:02:42

not sure if we've talked about this Jeff because it is

2:02:44

this weird My Venn

2:02:46

diagram of like still practicing as an attorney and

2:02:48

then talking about games

2:02:50

professionally So

2:02:53

I have to be careful what I say that there's some

2:02:55

stuff I probably still can't really talk about publicly, but

2:02:58

I saw some of the litigation paperwork behind

2:03:01

Michael Buck and Big Buck Hunter and Michael

2:03:05

Buck Really

2:03:07

brought the idea of a game with

2:03:09

the name Buck in it to

2:03:12

the forefront and Yeah,

2:03:14

I was it was

2:03:16

a nasty lawsuit like The

2:03:20

attorneys involved it I don't want to say the big-name

2:03:22

attorneys that you've seen on TV But you know like

2:03:24

the big there everybody was involved in this case I

2:03:26

was just doing doc review back on it But like

2:03:29

I there had never been another game with buck

2:03:31

in the name Yeah before Michael Buck and then

2:03:34

here comes another game with buck in the name.

2:03:36

Oh my gosh It

2:03:38

was spicy Jeff I don't want

2:03:40

to say too much the buck big game

2:03:42

hunter game It was so

2:03:44

derivative because Michael Buck was a small

2:03:47

game hunter game where you would

2:03:49

just shoot things like Frogs,

2:03:52

you know like a the odd squirrel Well,

2:03:55

I'm gonna the micro some microscope level to where

2:03:57

it was like, is this a dust mite? You

2:04:00

better zoom in you know you

2:04:03

had a scope I remember

2:04:05

looking through in the old neon in the

2:04:07

arcades you'd you look through the scope and

2:04:09

you'd zoom in and then you zoom in

2:04:11

even Farther and farther like on that leaf.

2:04:13

What is that? It's a caterpillar Small

2:04:16

game hunter. I don't

2:04:18

want to say how far out the MCU

2:04:21

was planned and again I don't want to

2:04:23

reveal too much from the documents I saw during this litigation

2:04:26

But let's just say I saw an ant-man tie-in

2:04:29

with Michael Bucks Small game hunter. Oh, yeah

2:04:31

that went into quantum a neum like the

2:04:33

smallest of game hunters And

2:04:36

so I don't want to say that they had the MCU

2:04:38

planned out all the way that far back then but I

2:04:41

saw some printed documents It's

2:04:45

you know, honestly, I wasn't even really into

2:04:47

hunting never have been probably never will be

2:04:49

but I played that game Just because the

2:04:51

sign on it said Buck

2:04:55

for a quarter remember And

2:04:57

I thought wow that seems like a deal You

2:05:00

know and then when you lost it told you to

2:05:02

buck off. I always thought that was cute. That was

2:05:04

a little yeah You

2:05:06

know, it's funny This reminds

2:05:09

me of another game with

2:05:11

another similar similar

2:05:13

title dispute because Yeah,

2:05:16

you remember that's on right I

2:05:20

Love the Zaxxon Game

2:05:23

Zaxxon. Did you ever talk about him too

2:05:25

much? No, I've heard of it. I didn't

2:05:27

play it. I think is it like rotoscoped That's

2:05:30

how I have that right. Yeah, or is that not

2:05:32

it was that tempest like Isometric

2:05:34

I'm gonna look at a ship flying

2:05:37

and you'd have to fly over these

2:05:39

walls and shoot stuff but it was

2:05:41

like one of the very first isometric

2:05:43

games, but not

2:05:45

the first because before Zaxxon I

2:05:48

see it here. It's Jaxxon Remember

2:05:54

Jackson I Remember

2:05:57

my karate teacher telling me

2:05:59

to turn the arcade cabinet

2:06:01

for Jackson on and Jackson

2:06:04

off. And it was like this

2:06:06

whole, I had to Jackson, I

2:06:08

had to Jackson off, I had to Jackson. Never

2:06:11

Jackson off in the store though, that's not,

2:06:14

you leave it on, that's what I'm saying is leave it on. To

2:06:16

me the bigger thing was its sequel,

2:06:18

I'm sorry Ms. Jackson, which was just

2:06:23

absolutely incredible because Michael Jackson had

2:06:25

Moonwalker. Yeah. And

2:06:27

then everybody. Yes, it felt like there was

2:06:29

all the only music games. I

2:06:32

remember I thought the sequel was the, when

2:06:35

it was brought into the PS2 era,

2:06:37

it was Jackson and

2:06:39

Daxter on. I

2:06:45

also remember Resident Evil Jackson. I'm

2:06:47

kidding. Yeah,

2:06:52

those were good games though. Those are

2:06:54

real good games. The Jackson game, it

2:06:56

was a lot like Moonwalker in

2:07:00

that I have no idea how you played it.

2:07:04

Well, I think it was isometric and

2:07:06

you actually just zoomed around and shot

2:07:08

annoying podcast hosts making dumb name puns.

2:07:11

I think it's how you're a little

2:07:13

spaceship and someone would be like, Jackson,

2:07:16

more like Jackson. And then you just,

2:07:18

and you'd shoot them. I think it's

2:07:20

isometric though. That's useful.

2:07:22

And I do understand that this segment

2:07:24

is just devolving into bad puns, but

2:07:26

you know what? That's

2:07:29

the way it's gonna be because that's

2:07:31

who we are. And we're grateful. We're

2:07:33

grateful for all the folks that

2:07:35

have supported us at the hype train level. Thank

2:07:37

you. You are awesome. And I

2:07:40

hope you're having as much fun doing this as

2:07:42

we are. All

2:07:45

right, thanks again for listening. We'll see
