RATING
There are many spoof comedy podcasts out there taking on the tropes of the investigative true crime genre. Done Disappeared by John David Booter is possibly the wittiest and most surreal of them all.
This show is so frickin hilarious. John David Booter has made me lose my shit on public transportation a humiliating amount of times. A very silly take on true crime podcasts (particularly filmmakers-turned-halfass-podcasts), the show dives headfirst into the absurd, the dark, and the satirical. At one point they do a montage of thinly veiled (but very loving) parodies other true crime podcasts with impressions that are astonishingly spot on. Also, they do fake ad breaks for Blue Apron, Casper Mattresses, etc, that descend into borderline-madness and are timed to absolute perfection.
Very underappreciated. If you know the true-crime genre tropes, you'll love this dissection of them all. But I also love how it just goes off to weird places all it's own.
As someone who both loves the potential positive impact of true crime reporting and cringes over the poor taste and tired tropes which pervade the genre, I found this podcast deeply satisfying. The doggedness and versatility of the host is inspiring. Something about him reminds me that the John Dies at the End book series by David Wong would make an incredible long-form audio drama.I hope season 4 comes someday and helps solve the mystery of why John David Booter done disappeared.
Well done satirical show of the true crime podcast genre. Feel like a South Park episode without the coarse language. Not sure if it really needs more than one season.
