As a young man, he was fond of sports and hunting and was said to be uncommonly handsome. Standing more than six feet tall, he loomed large in the lives and minds of his subjects as he navigated his country through the tricky diplomatic and military hazards of the 16th century.A man of enormous appetites, Henry conducted affairs with many women, married six, and executed two. His infatuation with Anne Boleyn set in motion a chain of events that reshaped the church in England and eroded the dominance of Rome. But the popular image of Henry as a crude tyrant, dispatching courtiers, enemies, and wives with gusto, obscures a more nuanced and fascinating character. He was a true Renaissance king who presided over one of Europe's greatest courts and nudged Western civilization onto a new course. Here, from Abigail Archer, author of the New York Times best seller Elizabeth I, is the story of Henry VIII.Members Reviews:Amazing read!Very readable, concise and interesting. I love history and particularly reading about larger than life personalities. Also the exact contents of letters exchanged between the king and his wives was fascinating to read. They were all so literate and the composition of the lettrs was so polished that it is hard to imagine that the women ( at least some of them, I imagine) in the 16th century were so well educated and erudite at that period. In addition, the complete change in personality that Henry VIII undergoes in mid-life is another puzzling element of his story. What motivated him to become such a vicious and murderous king in the second part of his life? Was it paranoia? Was it excruciating pain due to his jousting injury? Or impotence? You can draw your own conclusions.a great read. His life was detailed greatly here, it highlighted his strengths, but also let the reader into his troubles, politically, family-life, and the lengths he went to acquire that which he desired. Not always the behavior one would expect from the high-born, and in the end of course no amount of wealth, would keep death from his door...a great read...Good readingWell written, factual, informative. Don't expect Allison Weir level of detail, however. This would be a good book to read if, unlike me, you haven't feasted on more microscopic examinations of Bluff King Hal's personality..If you loved the show The Tudors then you'll love this book too.Good book. I love biographies and I've been on a European royalty kick lately. I was expecting this book to be a bit more in depth but it was still very well written and had a lot of information. An Interesting account of the story of a great King.A nicely and interesting account of the story of a King who changed not only his Kingdom, but also his separation from Church, naming himself Head of the Religious guide of his Countrymen, and all to suit his purpose. All of this made a very interested time in History and to me a good and Entertaining read.Contact me for any questions: [email protected]
